RESUMO

Researchers who study the human hippocampus are naturally interested in how its subfields function. However, many researchers are precluded from examining subfields because their manual delineation from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans (still the gold standard approach) is time consuming and requires significant expertise. To help ameliorate this issue, we present here two protocols, one for 3T MRI and the other for 7T MRI, that permit automated hippocampus segmentation into six subregions, namely dentate gyrus/cornu ammonis (CA)4, CA2/3, CA1, subiculum, pre/parasubiculum, and uncus along the entire length of the hippocampus. These protocols are particularly notable relative to existing resources in that they were trained and tested using large numbers of healthy young adults (n = 140 at 3T, n = 40 at 7T) whose hippocampi were manually segmented by experts from MRI scans. Using inter-rater reliability analyses, we showed that the quality of automated segmentations produced by these protocols was high and comparable to expert manual segmenters. We provide full open access to the automated protocols, and anticipate they will save hippocampus researchers a significant amount of time. They could also help to catalyze subfield research, which is essential for gaining a full understanding of how the hippocampus functions.

Nitroaromatic compounds are major constituents of the brown carbon aerosol particles in the troposphere that absorb near-ultraviolet (UV) and visible solar radiation and have a profound effect on the Earth's climate. The primary sources of brown carbon include biomass burning, forest fires, and residential burning of biofuels, and an important secondary source is photochemistry in aqueous cloud and fog droplets. Nitrobenzene is the smallest nitroaromatic molecule and a model for the photochemical behavior of larger nitroaromatic compounds. Despite the obvious importance of its droplet photochemistry to the atmospheric environment, there have not been any detailed studies of the ultrafast photochemical dynamics of nitrobenzene in aqueous solution. Here, we combine femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, time-resolved infrared spectroscopy, and quantum chemistry calculations to investigate the primary steps following the near-UV (λ ≥ 340 nm) photoexcitation of aqueous nitrobenzene. To understand the role of the surrounding water molecules in the photochemical dynamics of nitrobenzene, we compare the results of these investigations with analogous measurements in solutions of methanol, acetonitrile, and cyclohexane. We find that vibrational energy transfer to the aqueous environment quenches internal excitation, and therefore, unlike the gas phase, we do not observe any evidence for formation of photoproducts on timescales up to 500 ns. We also find that hydrogen bonding between nitrobenzene and surrounding water molecules slows the S1/S0 internal conversion process.

We examined potato rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities across three regions: Cheongju, Pyeongchang, and Gangneung. These regions have varying soil and climate conditions, resulting in different yields. We found that precipitation was the main limiting factor in our study while soil physiochemical factors affect bacterial and fungal microbiota in correlation with yield. Both bacterial and fungal microbiota showed distinct patterns according to the regions. ASVs positively correlated with yield were predominantly found in the Pyeongchang region which also produced the highest yields, while ASVs negatively correlated with yield were associated with Gangneung where the lowest yields were observed. The greatest bacterial and fungal diversity was detected in Pyeongchang consisting of Propionibacteriales, Burkholderiales, and Vicinamibacteriales. Gangneung, on the other hand primarily belong to Sordariales, Mortierellales, Cystofilobasidiales, and Tremellales. The putative yield-negative ASVs detected in Gangneung may have been influenced by drought stress. This work has highlighted key bacterial and fungal taxa as well as core taxa that may potentially be associated with high and low yields of potato in relation to metadata which includes soil chemical and physical parameters as well as weather data. Taken together we suggest that this information can be used to assess site suitability for potato production.

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH) and septo-optic-pituitary dysplasia (SOD) are neurodevelopmental disorders associated with congenital visual impairment. Our aim was to investigate associations between several ophthalmic and neuroimaging features in patients with ONH/SOD. METHODS: A retrospective chart and neuroimaging review was performed in patients with ONH/SOD. Ophthalmic signs (e.g., monocular best-corrected visual acuity [BCVA], nystagmus, and strabismus) and neuroimaging data were extracted and their associations were investigated. RESULTS: There were 128 patients (70 males) with ONH/SOD who had neuroimaging. Their mean age at the end of the study was 13.2 (SD: 7.5) years. Ophthalmic data were available on 102 patients (58 males). BCVA varied from normal to no light perception. There were statistically significant associations between: (A) Reduced optic nerve or chiasm size on neuroimaging and more severely impaired BCVA and (B) laterality of the reduced optic nerve or chiasm size on neuroimaging and laterality of: (1) The eye with reduced BCVA, (2) small optic disc size, and (3) RAPD, if present (p ≤ 0.0002 each). The presence of symmetrically small optic nerves on MRI was significantly more common in patients with nystagmus than when nystagmus was absent (N = 96, 75% vs. 38.6%, p < 0.0001). The presence of neuronal migration disorders, their type and laterality were not associated with BCVA and laterality of the reduced BCVA. CONCLUSION: The functional and structural associations in ONH are consistent with the impaired visual function that results from the hypoplastic anterior visual pathways. However, these associations were not perfectly concordant making prediction of adult BCVA challenging in these patients.

Background: Digital health technologies have potential to transform palliative care (PC) services. The global aging population poses unique challenges for PC, which digital health technologies may help overcome. Evaluation of attitudes and perceptions combined with quantification of prior use habits favor an understanding of psychological barriers to PC patient acceptance of digital health technologies including artificial intelligence (AI). Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the attitudes and perceptions of PC patients regarding a broad range of digital health technologies used in their routine monitoring and treatment and identify barriers to use. Methods: We used a 39-item questionnaire to evaluate acceptance and use of smartphone-based electronic patient report outcome measures, wearables, AI, data privacy, and virtual reality (VR) in 29 female and male PC inpatients. Results: A majority of patients indicated an interest in (69.0%) and positive attitude toward (75.9%) digital health technologies. Nearly all (93.1%) patients believe that digital health technologies will become more important in medicine in the future. Most patients would consider using their smartphone (79.3%) or wearable (69.0%) more often for their health. The most feasible technologies were smartphones, wearables, and VR. Barriers to acceptance included unfamiliarity, data security, errors in data interpretation, and loss of personal interaction through AI. Conclusion: In this patient survey, acceptance of new technologies in a PC patient population was high, encouraging its use also at the end-of-life.

BACKGROUND: RNA editing at the Q/R site of GluA2 occurs with ~99% efficiency in the healthy brain, so that the majority of AMPARs contain GluA2(R) instead of the exonically encoded GluA2(Q). Reduced Q/R site editing infcreases AMPA receptor calcium permeability and leads to dendritic spine loss, neurodegeneration, seizures and learning impairments. Furthermore, GluA2 Q/R site editing is impaired in Alzheimer's disease (AD), raising the possibility that unedited GluA2(Q)-containing AMPARs contribute to synapse loss and neurodegeneration in AD. If true, then inhibiting expression of unedited GluA2(Q), while maintaining expression of GluA2(R), may be a novel strategy of preventing synapse loss and neurodegeneration in AD. METHODS: We engineered mice with the 'edited' arginine codon (CGG) in place of the unedited glutamine codon (CAG) at position 607 of the Gria2 gene. We crossbred this line with the J20 mouse model of AD and conducted anatomical, electrophysiological and behavioural assays to determine the impact of eliminating unedited GluA2(Q) expression on AD-related phenotypes. RESULTS: Eliminating unedited GluA2(Q) expression in AD mice prevented dendritic spine loss and hippocampal CA1 neurodegeneration as well as improved working and reference memory in the radial arm maze. These phenotypes were improved independently of Aß pathology and ongoing seizure susceptibility. Surprisingly, our data also revealed increased spine density in non-AD mice with exonically encoded GluA2(R) as compared to their wild-type littermates, suggesting an unexpected and previously unknown role for unedited GluA2(Q) in regulating dendritic spines. CONCLUSION: The Q/R editing site of the AMPA receptor subunit GluA2 may act as an epigenetic switch that regulates dendritic spines, neurodegeneration and memory deficits in AD.

The nitrile containing Ru(II)polypyridyl complex [Ru(phen)2(11,12-dCN-dppz)]2+ (1) is shown to act as a sensitive infrared probe of G-quadruplex (G4) structures. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy reveals enantiomer sensitive binding for the hybrid htel(K) and antiparallel htel(Na) G4s formed by the human telomer sequence d[AG3(TTAG3)3]. Time-resolved infrared (TRIR) of 1 upon 400 nm excitation indicates dominant interactions with the guanine bases in the case of Λ-1/htel(K), Δ-1/htel(K), and Λ-1/htel(Na) binding, whereas Δ-1/htel(Na) binding is associated with interactions with thymine and adenine bases in the loop. The intense nitrile transient at 2232 cm-1 undergoes a linear shift to lower frequency as the solution hydrogen bonding environment decreases in DMSO/water mixtures. This shift is used as a sensitive reporter of the nitrile environment within the binding pocket. The lifetime of 1 in D2O (ca. 100 ps) is found to increase upon DNA binding, and monitoring of the nitrile and ligand transients as well as the diagnostic DNA bleach bands shows that this increase is related to greater protection from the solvent environment. Molecular dynamics simulations together with binding energy calculations identify the most favorable binding site for each system, which are in excellent agreement with the observed TRIR solution study. This study shows the power of combining the environmental sensitivity of an infrared (IR) probe in its excited state with the TRIR DNA "site effect" to gain important information about the binding site of photoactive agents and points to the potential of such amplified IR probes as sensitive reporters of biological environments.

Over a decade's experience of post-stroke rehabilitation by administering the specific anti-TNF biological, etanercept, by the novel perispinal route, is consistent with a wide range of chronically diminished neurological function having been caused by persistent excessive cerebral levels of TNF. We propose that this TNF persistence, and cerebral disease chronicity, largely arises from a positive autocrine feedback loop of this cytokine, allowing the persistence of microglial activation caused by the excess TNF that these cells produce. It appears that many of these observations have never been exploited to construct a broad understanding and treatment of certain chronic, yet reversible, neurological illnesses. We propose that this treatment allows these chronically activated microglia to revert to their normal quiescent state, rather than simply neutralizing the direct harmful effects of this cytokine after its release from microglia. Logically, this also applies to the chronic cerebral aspects of various other neurological conditions characterized by activated microglia. These include long COVID, Lyme disease, post-stroke syndromes, traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, post-chemotherapy, post-irradiation cerebral dysfunction, cerebral palsy, fetal alcohol syndrome, hepatic encephalopathy, the antinociceptive state of morphine tolerance, and neurogenic pain. In addition, certain psychiatric states, in isolation or as sequelae of infectious diseases such as Lyme disease and long COVID, are candidates for being understood through this approach and treated accordingly. Perispinal etanercept provides the prospect of being able to treat various chronic central nervous system illnesses, whether they are of infectious or non-infectious origin, through reversing excess TNF generation by microglia.

We share data from N = 217 healthy adults (mean age 29 years, range 20-41; 109 females, 108 males) who underwent extensive cognitive assessment and neuroimaging to examine the neural basis of individual differences, with a particular focus on a brain structure called the hippocampus. Cognitive data were collected using a wide array of questionnaires, naturalistic tests that examined imagination, autobiographical memory recall and spatial navigation, traditional laboratory-based tests such as recalling word pairs, and comprehensive characterisation of the strategies used to perform the cognitive tests. 3 Tesla MRI data were also acquired and include multi-parameter mapping to examine tissue microstructure, diffusion-weighted MRI, T2-weighted high-resolution partial volume structural MRI scans (with the masks of hippocampal subfields manually segmented from these scans), whole brain resting state functional MRI scans and partial volume high resolution resting state functional MRI scans. This rich dataset will be of value to cognitive and clinical neuroscientists researching individual differences, real-world cognition, brain-behaviour associations, hippocampal subfields and more. All data are freely available on Dryad.

Agriculture faces potentially competing societal demands to produce food, fiber and fuel while reducing negative environmental impacts and delivering regulating, supporting and cultural ecosystem services. This necessitates a new generation of long-term agricultural field experiments designed to study the behavior of contrasting cropping systems in terms of multiple outcomes. We document the principles and practices of a new long-term experiment of this type at Rothamsted, established at two contrasting sites in 2017 and 2018, and report initial yield data at the crop and system level. The objective of the Large-Scale Rotation Experiment was to establish gradients of system properties and outcomes to improve our fundamental understanding of UK cropping systems. It is composed of four management factors-phased rotations, cultivation (conventional vs reduced tillage), nutrition (additional organic amendment vs standard mineral fertilization) and crop protection (conventional vs smart crop protection). These factors were combined in a balanced design resulting in 24 emergent cropping systems at each site and can be analyzed at the level of the system or component management factors. We observed interactions between management factors and with the environment on crop yields, justifying the systems level, multi-site approach. Reduced tillage resulted in lower wheat yields but the effect varied with rotation, previous-crop and site. Organic amendments significantly increased spring barley yield by 8% on average though the effect again varied with site. The plowed cropping systems tended to produce higher caloric yield overall than systems under reduced tillage. Additional response variables are being monitored to study synergies and trade-offs with outcomes other than yield at the cropping system level. The experiment has been established as a long-term resource for inter-disciplinary research. By documenting the design process, we aim to facilitate the adoption of similar approaches to system-scale agricultural experimentation to inform the transition to more sustainable cropping systems. Constraining the multiple climatic, lithological, topographic, and geochemical variables controlling isotope variations in large rivers is often challenging with standard statistical methods. Machine learning (ML) is an efficient method for analyzing multidimensional datasets, resolving correlated processes, and exploring relationships between variables simultaneously. We tested four ML algorithms to elucidate the controls of riverine δ7Li variations across the Yukon River Basin (YRB). We compiled (n = 102) and analyzed new samples (n = 21), producing a dataset of 123 river water samples collected across the basin during the summer including δ7Li and extracted environmental, climatological, and geological characteristics of the drainage area for each sample from open-access geospatial databases. The ML models were trained, tuned, and tested under multiple scenarios to avoid issues such as overfitting. Random Forests (RF) performed best at predicting δ7Li across the basin, with the median model explaining 62 % of the variance. The most important variables controlling δ7Li across the basin are elevation, lithology, and past glacial coverage, which ultimately influence weathering congruence. Riverine δ7Li has a negative dependence on elevation. This reflects congruent weathering in kinetically-limited mountain zones with short residence times. The consistent ranking of lithology, specifically igneous and metamorphic rock cover, as a top feature controlling riverine δ7Li modeled by the RFs is unexpected. Further study is required to validate this finding. Rivers draining areas that were extensively covered during the last glacial maximum tend to have lower δ7Li due to immature weathering profiles resulting in short residence times, less secondary mineral formation and therefore more congruent weathering. We demonstrate that ML provides a fast, simple, visualizable, and interpretable approach for disentangling key controls of isotope variations in river water. We assert that ML should become a routine tool, and present a framework for applying ML to analyze spatial metal isotope data at the catchment scale.

An investigation into species formed following precatalyst activation in Mn-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization reactions is reported. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy demonstrates that light-induced CO dissociation from precatalysts [Mn(C^N)(CO)4] (C^N = cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridine (1a), cyclometalated 1,1-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)methanimine (1b)) in a toluene solution of 2-phenylpyridine (2a) or 1,1-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)methanimine (2b) results in the initial formation of solvent complexes fac-[Mn(C^N)(CO)3(toluene)]. Subsequent solvent substitution on a nanosecond time scale then yields fac-[Mn(C^N)(CO)3(κ1-(N)-2a)] and fac-[Mn(C^N)(CO)3(κ1-(N)-2b)], respectively. When the experiments are performed in the presence of phenylacetylene, the initial formation of fac-[Mn(C^N)(CO)3(toluene)] is followed by a competitive substitution reaction to give fac-[Mn(C^N)(CO)3(2)] and fac-[Mn(C^N)(CO)3(η2-PhC2H)]. The fate of the reaction mixture depends on the nature of the nitrogen-containing substrate used. In the case of 2-phenylpyridine, migratory insertion of the alkyne into the Mn-C bond occurs, and fac-[Mn(C^N)(CO)3(κ1-(N)-2a)] remains unchanged. In contrast, when 2b is used, substitution of the η2-bound phenylacetylene by 2b occurs on a microsecond time scale, and fac-[Mn(C^N)(CO)3(κ1-(N)-2b)] is the sole product from the reaction. Calculations with density functional theory indicate that this difference in behavior may be correlated with the different affinities of 2a and 2b for the manganese. This study therefore demonstrates that speciation immediately following precatalyst activation is a kinetically controlled event. The most dominant species in the reaction mixture (the solvent) initially binds to the metal. The subsequent substitution of the metal-bound solvent is also kinetically controlled (on a ns time scale) prior to the thermodynamic distribution of products being obtained.

Microbial catabolic activity (MCA) defined as the degrading activity of microorganisms toward various organic compounds for their growth and energy is commonly used to assess soil microbial function potential. For its measure, several methods are available including multi-substrate-induced respiration (MSIR) measurement which allow to estimate functional diversity using selected carbon substrates targeting specific biochemical pathways. In this review, the techniques used to measure soil MCA are described and compared with respect to their accuracy and practical use. Particularly the efficiency of MSIR-based approaches as soil microbial function indicators was discussed by (i) showing their sensitivity to different agricultural practices including tillage, amendments, and cropping systems and (ii) by investigating their relationship with soil enzyme activities and some soil chemical properties (pH, soil organic carbon, cation exchange capacity). We highlighted the potential of these MSIR-based MCA measurements to improve microbial inoculant composition and to determine their potential effects on soil microbial functions. Finally, we have proposed ideas for improving MCA measurement notably through the use of molecular tools and stable isotope probing which can be combined with classic MSIR methods. The synergistic use of (organo)photoredox catalysts with hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) cocatalysts has emerged as a powerful strategy for innate C(sp3)-H bond functionalization, particularly for C-H bonds α- to nitrogen. Azide ion (N3-) was recently identified as an effective HAT catalyst for the challenging α-C-H alkylation of unprotected, primary alkylamines, in combination with dicyanoarene photocatalysts such as 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4CzIPN). Here, time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy over sub-picosecond to microsecond timescales provides kinetic and mechanistic details of the photoredox catalytic cycle in acetonitrile solution. Direct observation of the electron transfer from N3- to photoexcited 4CzIPN reveals the participation of the S1 excited electronic state of the organic photocatalyst as an electron acceptor, but the N3• radical product of this reaction is not observed. Instead, both time-resolved infrared and UV-visible spectroscopic measurements implicate rapid association of N3• with N3- (a favorable process in acetonitrile) to form the N6•- radical anion. Electronic structure calculations indicate that N3• is the active participant in the HAT reaction, suggesting a role for N6•- as a reservoir that regulates the concentration of N3•.

The Sample Tubes on the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover were required to meet strict cleanliness standards for possible organic and inorganic contamination introduction to collected samples. There were also strict planetary protection cleanliness standards required to limit possible biological contamination. Together, these sets of standards also applied to associated hardware, like the Sample Tube hermetic seals. This created unique challenges to manufacturing, cleaning, and verifying the final cleanliness state of the Sample Tubes, which are the main focus of this publication. Documenting the final cleanliness state of the Sample Tubes is critical for future analysis of collected martian samples, of significant interest to the scientific community, and will have implications for possible future missions like Mars Sample Return. An accounting of events that led to the final delivered state of the Sample Tubes on Earth with regard to contamination control cleanliness requirements, precision cleaning, processing, and verification are provided.

People vary substantially in their capacity to recall past experiences, known as autobiographical memories. Here we investigated whether the volumes of specific hippocampal subfields were associated with autobiographical memory retrieval ability. We manually segmented the full length of the two hippocampi in 201 healthy young adults into DG/CA4, CA2/3, CA1, subiculum, pre/parasubiculum and uncus, in the largest such manually segmented subfield sample yet reported. Across the group we found no evidence for an association between any subfield volume and autobiographical memory recall ability. However, when participants were assigned to lower and higher performing groups based on their memory recall scores, we found that bilateral CA2/3 volume was significantly and positively associated with autobiographical memory recall performance specifically in the lower performing group. We further observed that this effect was attributable to posterior CA2/3. By contrast, semantic details from autobiographical memories, and performance on a range of laboratory-based memory tests, did not correlate with CA2/3 volume. Overall, our findings highlight that posterior CA2/3 may be particularly pertinent for autobiographical memory recall. They also reveal that there may not be direct one-to-one mapping of posterior CA2/3 volume with autobiographical memory ability, with size mattering perhaps only in those with poorer memory recall.

Following an oil spill into water, bacteria can biodegrade petroleum hydrocarbons which could lead to petrogenic carbon assimilation by aquatic biota. We used changes in the isotope ratios of radio- (Δ14C) and stable (δ13C) carbon to examine the potential for assimilation of petrogenic carbon into a freshwater food web following experimental spills of diluted bitumen (dilbit) into a boreal lake in northwestern Ontario, Canada. Different volumes (1.5, 2.9, 5.5, 18, 42, 82, and 180 L) of Cold Lake Winter Blend (a heavy crude blend of bitumen and condensate) dilbit were applied to seven 10-m diameter littoral limnocorrals (approximate volume of 100 m3), and two additional limnocorrals had no added dilbit to serve as controls. Particulate organic matter (POM) and periphyton from oil-treated limnocorrals had lower δ13C (up to 3.2‰ and 2.1‰ for POM and periphyton, respectively) than the control at every sampled interval (3, 6 and 10 weeks for POM and 6, 8 and 10 weeks for periphyton). Dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC, respectively) had lower Δ14C in the oil-treated limnocorrals relative to the control (up to 122‰ and 440‰ lower, respectively). Giant floater mussel (Pyganodon grandis) housed for 25 days in aquaria containing oil-contaminated water from the limnocorrals did not show significant changes in δ13C values of muscle tissue compared to mussels housed in control water. Overall, the changes in δ13C and Δ14C observed indicated small amounts (up to 11% in DIC) of oil carbon incorporation into the food web. The combined δ13C and Δ14C data provide evidence for minimal incorporation of dilbit into the food web of this oligotrophic lake, suggesting that microbial degradation and subsequent incorporation of oil C into the food web may play a relatively small role in the ultimate fate of oil in this type of ecosystem.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It has been reported there is a difference in the size of esodeviations when using letters compared to pictures or lights as a fixation target. In many clinics, small picture stickers are used as a target for preliterate or uncooperative children. In this study, experimental stickers with detailed pictures were compared to the Lang fixation cube and a monochromatic circle to assess their suitability as near fixation targets for the measurement of near deviations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants were 3-5 years of age and had an esodeviation. The near angle of deviation was measured using the three targets and compared to determine if treatment would be affected. Clinical significance is based on a difference of 5 prism diopters (PD) as this could potentially change the treatment plan. RESULTS: The results of the study show no clinically significant difference when comparing the three near targets. The experimental sticker induced the most accommodation, followed by the Lang fixation cube and then the red circle sticker. CONCLUSION: Although none of the mean differences between the target comparisons reached the clinically significant threshold set, it should be considered that over one third of participants had a clinically significant difference in the esodeviation measurement at 33 cm when using the detailed picture sticker when compared to the red circle sticker.

Achieving food security requires resilient agricultural systems with improved nutrient-use efficiency, optimized water and nutrient storage in soils, and reduced gaseous emissions. Success relies on understanding coupled nitrogen and carbon metabolism in soils, their associated influences on soil structure and the processes controlling nitrogen transformations at scales relevant to microbial activity. Here we show that the influence of organic matter on arable soil nitrogen transformations can be decoded by integrating metagenomic data with soil structural parameters. Our approach provides a mechanistic explanation of why organic matter is effective in reducing nitrous oxide losses while supporting system resilience. The relationship between organic carbon, soil-connected porosity and flow rates at scales relevant to microbes suggests that important increases in nutrient-use efficiency could be achieved at lower organic carbon stocks than currently envisaged.

Mn(I) C-H functionalization of coumarins provides a versatile and practical method for the rapid assembly of fused polycyclic pyridinium-containing coumarins in a regioselective manner. The synthetic strategy enables application of bench-stable organomanganese reagents in both photochemical- and thermal-promoted reactions. The cyclomanganated intermediates, and global reaction system, provide an ideal testing ground for structural characterization of the active Mn(I) carbonyl-containing species, including transient species observable by ultra-fast time-resolved spectroscopic methods. The thermodynamic reductive elimination product, solely encountered from reaction between alkynes and air-stable organometallic cyclomanganated coumarins, has enabled characterization of a critical seven-membered Mn(I) intermediate, detected by time-resolved infrared spectroscopy, enabling the elucidation of the temporal profile of key steps in the reductive elimination pathway. Quantitative data are provided. Manganated polycyclic products are readily decomplexed by AgBF4 , opening-up an efficient route to the formation of π-extended hybrid coumarin-pyridinium compounds.
