Abstract Introduction: Care towards nutrition is essential for the quality of a sustainable aquaculture product. Since the balance in food affects the growth and production of gametes. The circular economy is made possible through the use of discarded materials. Objective: The aim of this research was to study the fatty acid composition and metabolic pathways in the gametes of Arbacia dufresnii, with a focus on the implications of incorporating shrimp byproducts into aquaculture feeds. Methods: Four different treatments were designed to maintain optimal nutritional quality, particularly in lipids and proteins, based on previous studies. The fatty acid profiles of the feeds and gametes were analyzed by using gas-chromatography, and statistical analyses were conducted to determine significant differences. Results: Significant differences were observed in the abundance (%) of omega-3 (ω-3) and omega-6 (ω-6) fatty acids. The (ω-3) metabolic pathway was more pronounced in the gametes of wild animals and those fed with the experimental feeds. In contrast, the (ω-6) metabolic pathway was less relevant in these groups. The (ω-3) /(ω-6) ratio was highest in the gametes of wild animals. Feeds enriched in fatty acids enhanced their bioaccumulation in the gametes reaching higher concentrations than wild animals. The availability of fatty acids in foods allowed their bioaccumulation in gametes, with concentrations equal to or higher than those observed in animals in their natural environment for certain fatty acids. Conclusions: Incorporating shrimp byproducts in aquaculture feeds demonstrated a promising strategy for resource utilization and organic input generation. The fatty acid composition in the gametes of A. dufresnii was influenced by the diet, highlighting the potential of balanced feeds to enhance the bioaccumulation of essential fatty acids. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of sustainable aquaculture practices and the production of nutritionally enriched seafood products.


Resumen Introducción: El cuidado hacia la nutrición es fundamental para la calidad de un producto acuícola sostenible. Ya que el balance en los alimentos afecta el crecimiento y producción de los gametos. A partir del aprovechamiento de materias de descarte se posibilita la economía circular. Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar la composición de ácidos grasos y las vías metabólicas en los gametos de Arbacia dufresnii, centrándose en las implicaciones de la incorporación de subproductos de camarones en los alimentos de acuicultura. Métodos: Se diseñaron cuatro tratamientos diferentes para mantener una calidad nutricional óptima, especialmente en lípidos y proteínas, basándose en estudios previos. Se analizaron los perfiles de ácidos grasos de los alimentos y los gametos mediante cromatografía de gases, y se realizaron análisis estadísticos para determinar diferencias significativas. Resultados: Se observaron diferencias significativas en la abundancia (%) de ácidos grasos omega-3 (ω-3) y omega-6 (ω-6). La vía metabólica de (ω-3) fue más pronunciada en los gametos de los animales en su entorno natural y aquellos alimentados con los piensos experimentales. Por el contrario, la vía metabólica de (ω-6) tuvo menos relevancia en estos grupos. La relación (ω-3) /(ω-6) fue más alta en los gametos de los animales en su entorno natural. La disponibilidad de ácidos grasos en los alimentos permitió su bioacumulación en los gametos, con concentraciones iguales o superiores a las observadas en los animales en su entorno natural para ciertos ácidos grasos. Conclusiones: La incorporación de subproductos de camarones en los alimentos de acuicultura demostró ser una estrategia prometedora para la utilización de recursos y la generación de insumos orgánicos. La composición de ácidos grasos en los gametos de A. dufresnii fue influenciada por la dieta, destacando el potencial de los alimentos balanceados para mejorar la bioacumulación de ácidos grasos esenciales. Estos hallazgos brindan información valiosa para el desarrollo de prácticas sostenibles en acuicultura y la producción de productos marinos enriquecidos nutricionalmente.

Abstract Introduction: Sea urchin aquaculture is a rising industry, and in consequence, there is a need to establish optimal culture parameters to ensure the health of the cultured animals. Objective: To evaluate the bacterial counts in the seawater of sea urchin (Arbacia dufresnii) aquaculture recirculating systems (RAS). Methods: The bacteriological water quality of two RAS containing sea urchins was determined. For approximately two months, weekly water samples were taken. The bacteriological quality was determined by counting total aerobic heterotrophic populations, lactic acid bacteria, enterobacterias and genus Vibrio. Physicochemical parameters were also measured. Results: There was no presence of disease or mortality. Enterobacteria and lactic acid bacteria were not detected from both RAS systems. The number of animals had an important effect on the observed difference in the count of total bacteria and Vibrio spp. In RAS 1 the maximum counts of total bacteria and Vibrio spp. were 2.8 x 105 ± 1.7 x 105 and 1.45 x 105 ± 3.6 x 104 UFC ml-1, respectively. In RAS 2 total bacteria and Vibrio spp. exhibited repetitive behavior over time influenced in part by water exchange and mainly by feeding. The results indicate that periodic water changes ensure a limited growth of bacterial strains as Vibrio and other bacteria. Conclusions: Our results suggests that the bacterial count levels recorded in this study can be used as a threshold or safety limit for Arbacia dufresnii aquaculture.


Resumen Introducción: La acuicultura de erizos de mar es una industria en auge, y en consecuencia, existe la necesidad de establecer los parámetros de cultivo óptimos para garantizar la salud de los animales en cultivo. Objetivo: Evaluar los recuentos bacterianos en el agua de cultivo de los sistemas de recirculación acuícola (RAS) de erizo de mar Arbacia dufresnii. Métodos: Se determinó la calidad bacteriológica del agua de cultivo de dos RAS que contenían erizos de mar. Durante aproximadamente dos meses, se tomaron muestras de agua semanalmente. La calidad bacteriológica se determinó realizando recuento de las poblaciones heterótrofas aerobias totales, bacterias ácido lácticas, enterobacterias y bacterias del género Vibrio. También se midieron parámetros fisicoquímicos. Resultados: No se observaron patologías ni mortalidad. No se detectaron enterobacterias ni bacterias del ácido láctico en ninguno de los sistemas RAS. El número de animales cultivados tuvo un efecto importante en la diferencia observada en el recuento de bacterias totales y Vibrio spp. En el RAS 1 los recuentos máximos de bacterias totales y Vibrio spp. fueron 2.8 x 105 ± 1.7 x 105 y 1.45 x 105 ± 3.6 x 104 UFC ml-1, respectivamente. En RAS 2 los recuentos de bacterias totales y Vibrio spp. exhibieron un comportamiento repetitivo en el tiempo influenciado en parte por el recambio de agua y principalmente por la alimentación. Los resultados indican que los cambios periódicos de agua aseguran un crecimiento limitado de cepas bacterianas como Vibrio y otras bacterias. Conclusiones: Nuestros resultados sugieren que los niveles de recuento bacteriano registrados en este estudio pueden usarse como umbral o límite de seguridad para la acuicultura de Arbacia dufresnii.

Abstract Introduction: Short-term gametes storage is an inexpensive and simple technique that allows the use of the same batch of eggs or sperm at different times, maximizing the application of research protocols and the use of gametes in production. Arbacia dufresnii is a sea urchin species with proven aquaculture potential and already used in the nutraceutical industry. Aging of its gametes is unknown and is a needed information to scale up the production. Objective: Determine the effect of male and female gamete aging on the fertilization success of Arbacia dufresnii. This will allow optimizing the use of gametes after collection decoupling spawning from fertilization. Methods: A. dufresnii individuals were induced to spawn and gametes were kept at 12 ± 1 °C throughout each bioassay. Sperm was separated into two treatments: activated sperm in seawater (AS), and dry sperm (DS). Two bioassays were made: Bioassay 1 evaluated the effect of time on fertility by performing fertilization tests at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 96 h after spawning. Bioassay 2 evaluated the contribution of each type of aged gamete on fertility, combining aged gametes (96 h) with fresh gametes (0 h). Results: Bioassay 1: the fertilization success obtained by combining eggs (E) with AS or DS presented important differences. While the fertilization success remained acceptable (greater than 50 %) for up to 72 h using ExDS, it only remained acceptable for up to 48 h using ExAS. Bioassay 2: acceptable fertilization success was found by combining aged E (96 h) with fresh sperm, or aged DS (96 h) with fresh E, but not using aged AS with fresh E. Conclusions: The findings of this work show that fertilization success in A. dufresnii gametes remains relatively unchanged for up to 48 h after spawning when combining ExAS, and for up to 72 h when combining ExDS. However, when combining aged E or aged DS with a fresh gamete, post-collection fertilization can be extended up to 96 h. In this work, the first steps have been taken to understand the conservation time of A. dufresnii gametes with minimum intervention.


Resumen Introducción: El almacenamiento de gametos a corto plazo es una técnica económica y sencilla que permite utilizar el mismo lote de óvulos o espermatozoides en diferentes momentos, maximizando la aplicación de protocolos de investigación y el uso de gametos en la producción. Arbacia dufresnii es una especie con probado potencial acuícola como fuente de gametos para la industria nutracéutica. Sin embargo, se desconoce el envejecimiento de sus gametos y es una información necesaria para escalar la producción. Objetivo: Determinar el efecto del envejecimiento de los gametos masculinos y femeninos en el éxito de la fecundación de Arbacia dufresnii con el fin de optimizar el aprovechamiento de los gametos después de la recolecta desincronizando el desove de la fecundación. Métodos: Se indujo el desove de individuos de A. dufresnii y los gametos se mantuvieron a 12 ± 1 °C durante cada bioensayo. El esperma se separó en dos tratamientos: esperma activado en agua de mar (AS) y esperma seco (DS). Se realizaron dos bioensayos: El Bioensayo 1 evaluó el efecto del tiempo sobre la fertilidad realizando pruebas de fecundación a las 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h y 96 h después del desove. El bioensayo 2 evaluó la contribución de cada tipo de gameta envejecida (96 h) sobre la fertilidad, combinando gametos envejecidas (96 h) con gametos frescas (0 h). Resultados: Bioensayo 1: el éxito de fecundación obtenido combinando huevos (E) con AS o DS presentó diferencias importantes. Si bien el éxito de la fecundación se mantuvo aceptable (más del 50 %) durante un máximo de 72 h con ExDS, solo permaneció aceptable hasta 48 h con ExAS. Bioensayo 2: se encontró un éxito de fecundación aceptable combinando E envejecidos (96 h) con esperma fresco, o DS envejecido (96 h) con E fresco (0 h), pero no usando AS envejecido con E fresco (0 h). Conclusiones: Los hallazgos de este trabajo muestran que el éxito de la fecundación en los gametos de A. dufresnii permanece relativamente sin cambios hasta 48 h después del desove cuando se combina ExAS, y hasta 72 h cuando se combina ExDS. Sin embargo, cuando se combina E envejecido o DS envejecido con un gameto fresco, el tiempo entre la recolección y la fecundación puede extenderse hasta 96 h. En este trabajo se han dado los primeros pasos para entender el tiempo de conservación de los gametos de A. dufresnii con mínima intervención.

Pressures from anthropogenic activities are causing degradation of estuarine and coastal ecosystems around the world. Trace metals are key pollutants that are released and can partition in a range of environmental compartments, to be ultimately accumulated in exposed biota. The level of pressure varies with locations and the range and intensity of anthropogenic activities. The present study measured residues of trace metals in Mytilus mussel species collected from a range of locations around the world in areas experiencing a gradient of anthropogenic pressures that we classified as low, moderate, or high impact. The data showed no grouping/impact level when sampling sites in all countries were incorporated in the analysis, but there was significant clustering/impact level for most countries. Overall, high-impact areas were characterized by elevated concentrations of zinc, lead, nickel, and arsenic, whereas copper and silver were detected at higher concentrations in medium-impact areas. Finally, whereas most metals were found at lower concentrations in areas classified as low impact, cadmium was typically elevated in these areas. The present study provides a unique snapshot of worldwide levels of coastal metal contamination through the use of Mytilus species, a well-established marine biomonitoring tool. Scale-up feasibility of the graphitized sand filter (GS1) for Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) removal and its impact on other water pollutants (WPs) was assessed through a mass-balance study, using a laboratory-based drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) micromodel named: SAP-1©. The treatment system comprised: raw water tank, pre-oxidation tank (oxidant: potassium permanganate), followed by a coagulation/flocculation tank (alum supplemented), sedimentation tank, filtration module and finally disinfection tank (dosed with hypochlorite solution). Two filter modules (FMs) were studied: a) FM1: graphitized-sand media + sand media = ½ GS1 + ½ sand and b) FM2: ½ sand + ½ sand. The MC-LR removal study (initial concentration: 50 µg/L) was performed for two varieties of MC-LR source: a) commercial MC-LR, and b) algal-biomass released MC-LR. Along with MC-LR, other WPs were also evaluated including metal ions (Fe2+ and Cu2+), total coliform, turbidity, ammonia-N and dissolved organic carbon. The removal efficiency of these WPs was determined for each treatment unit (as it passed). FM1 was able to reduce the inflow residual of MC-LR (coming from the preceding unit: sedimentation unit) from 12.1 µg/L and 25.4 µg/L (for commercial and algal-cell MC-LR source, respectively) to <0.61 µg/L and hence successfully complying the WHO guidelines (<1 µg/L). The protein phosphatase 1A (PP1A) toxicity assay confirmed a much safer and more toxic-free filtrate (by 40%-50%) for FM1 as compared to the filtrate obtained from FM2. The techno-economic evaluation showed that for an annual household filter application, 160 CAD needs to be spent on one GS1-based filter unit as compared to over 6000 CAD (equivalent price) for the conventional sand-based filter to provide MC-LR-free water. The present study demonstrates the feasibility of the utilization of these units in household filtration systems.

Sand as a filter media is often challenged by the presence of organics in the form of natural organic matter, metal ions, and various micropollutants in the source water. It is mainly due to the presence of limited active adsorption sites and low surface area that governs an ineffective adsorption potential of the sand material. Herein, graphitized sand was synthesized to tackle the above limitations using two sugar solution sources: a) brewery effluent (as a low-cost solution) (GS1) and; b) sucrose solution (GS2). GS1 showed 68%, 60%, and 99% higher maximum adsorption constant (qmax) for divalent metal ions: iron, copper, and manganese, respectively as compared to raw sand (RS). Coating of MnO2 over the graphitized sand (GSMs: GS1M and GS2M) further helped in Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) removal (3%-9%) when inoculated with MC-LR-degraders, but was not as effective in removing metals, organic carbon and nitrogen when compared to just graphitized sand (GS1 or GS2). Inoculating GS and GSMs (for both sugar sources) not only helped in higher MC-LR removal (10%-15% more) but also enhanced the removal of other water contaminants including metals, organic nitrogen, and carbon. GS1 showed 20% and 50% more MC-LR removal than the sand material when tested at a low and high initial concentration of MC-LR (5 µg/L and 50 µg/L). The highest breakthrough period was obtained for GS1 filter using 1 mg/L Rhodamine-B dye, which was 12 times (48 min) more than the raw sand filter and almost 2.5 times (second best, 21 min) than GS1M. After three cycles of regeneration and reuse of GS1 filter, a decrease of just 14% in saturation adsorption capacity indicated its high reusability aspects.

Removal of synthetic dyes from wastewater generated by the textile industries is important. Rhodamine-B is widely used colorant and is medically proven to lead to tissue borne sarcoma, reproductive and neurotoxicity issues in humans, if still present in the treated drinking water. Herein, this dataset provides information on different forms of sand materials for their effective utilization as an adsorbent material for Rhodamine-B. The effectiveness of the media was measured in terms of breakthrough time obtained. One of the 27 presented data set is a part of a research article [1] explaining the breakthrough time of these filter media under specific experimental condition. All these data is a combination of three variables that were studied: a) concentration of Rhodamine-B (1 mg/L, 5 mg/L and 10 mg/L), b) flow velocity of Rhodamine-B spiked water (2 mL/min, 5 mL/min and 10 mL/min) and c) bed height (7.5 cm, 10 cm, and 12.5 cm). At any bed height, the breakthrough time of graphitized sand (brewery sugar coated, GS1) was found to be 3-4 times higher than the second best adsorbent, i.e., manganese dioxide coated on GS1.

In the past, the versatility of a biosand filter has been successfully checked to counter suspended solids, metals, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), coliforms and other water quality parameters (WQPs) from the drinking water sources. In this study, cyanotoxin in the form of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) along with above-mentioned WQPs including nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia are analyzed for their removal using agro-residue based biosand filters (ARSFs) for 49 days (7 cycles). Three different agro-residue materials (ARMs) viz. deinking sludge (DSF), hemp fiber (HFF) and paper-pulp dry sludge (PPF) were used as the support material (top 5 cm) along with sand (49 cm) as the primary filter media to enhance the overall bioactivity. This enhancement in bioactivity is hypothesized to remove more MC-LR, DOC, coliform along with efficient nitrification/denitrification. Native bacterial community isolated from the filtration unit of a drinking water treatment plant (Chryseobacterium sp. and Pseudomonas fragi = X) along with the MC-LR-degrader: Arthrobacter ramosus (which was screened as the best biofilm-former among two other MC-LR-degraders tested) were used to inoculate the filters (all three ARSFs). Overall, DSF performed the best among all the ARSFs when compared to the sand filter (SFI) inoculated with the same bacterial strains (A + X). An increase in the bioactivity for ARSFs, particularly DSF was evident from the DOC removal (44 ±â€¯11%, 15% more than SFI), coliform removal (92.7 ±â€¯12.8%, 24% more than SFI), MC-LR removal (87 ±â€¯14%, 13% more than SFI) and an effective nitrification/denitrification, reducing ammonia, nitrate and nitrite level to below guideline values. Toxic assessment using bioindicator (Rhizobium meliloti) revealed safe filter water only in case of DSF.

Biological treatment of cyanotoxins has gained much importance in recent decades and holds a promise to work in coordination with various physicochemical treatments. In drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), effective removal of cyanotoxins with reduced toxicity is a primary concern. Commonly used treatments, such as ozonation, chlorination or activated carbon, undergo significant changes in their operating conditions (mainly dosage) to counter the variation in different environmental parameters, such as pH, temperature, and high cyanotoxin concentration. Presence of metal ions, natural organic matter (NOM), and other chemicals demand higher dosage and hence affect the activation energy to efficiently break down the cyanotoxin molecule. Due to these higher dose requirements, the treatment leads to the formation of toxic metabolites at a concentration high enough to break the guideline values. Biological methods of cyanotoxin removal proceed via enzymatic pathway where the protein-encoding genes are often responsible for the compound breakdown into non-toxic metabolites. However, in contrast to the chemical treatment, the biological processes advance at a much slower kinetic rate, predominantly due to a longer onset period (high lag phase). In fact, more than 90% of the studies reported on the biological degradation of the cyanotoxins attribute the biodegradation to the bacterial suspension. This suspended growth limits the mass transfer kinetics due to the presence of metal ions, NOMs and, other oxidizable matter, which further prolongs the lag phase and makes biological process toxic-free, albeit less efficient. In this context, this review attempts to bring out the importance of the attached growth mechanism, in particular, the biofilm-based treatment approaches which can enhance the biodegradation rate.

Bacterial community isolated from different units of a Drinking Water Treatment Plant (DWTP) including pre-ozonation unit (POU), the effluent-sludge mixture of the sedimentation unit (ESSU) and top-sand layer water sample from the filtration unit (TSFU) were acclimatized separately in the microcystin-leucine arginine (MC-LR)-rich environment to evaluate MC-LR biodegradation. Maximum biodegradation efficiency of 97.2 ±â€¯8.7% was achieved by the acclimatized-TSFU bacterial community followed by 72.1 ±â€¯6.4% and 86.2 ±â€¯7.3% by acclimatized-POU and acclimatized-ESSU bacterial community, respectively. Likewise, the non-acclimatized bacterial community showed similar biodegradation efficiency of 71.1 ±â€¯7.37%, 86.7 ±â€¯3.19% and 94.35 ±â€¯10.63% for TSFU, ESSU and POU, respectively, when compared to the acclimatized ones. However, the biodegradation rate increased 1.5-folds for acclimatized versus non-acclimatized conditions. The mass spectrometry studies on MC-LR degradation depicted hydrolytic linearization of cyclic MC-LR along with the formation of small peptide fragments including Adda molecule that is linked to the reduced toxicity (qualitative toxicity analysis). This was further confirmed quantitatively by using Rhizobium meliloti as a bioindicator. The acclimatized-TSFU bacterial community comprised of novel MC-LR degrading strains, Chryseobacterium sp. and Pseudomonas fragi as confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing.

Titanium dioxide particles (TiO2) are widely used to produce whitens (titanium white) and different class of nanomaterials (semiconductors, photo catalysts and nanotubes). Nanomaterials are excellent adsorbents and catalysts with a wide range of applications. However, these are reported to induce biological and genetic alterations among several invertebrate groups. Invasive species such as zebra mussels can be used as model organisms to study the behavior of particles and nanoparticles (NPs) due to their wide distribution; mussels have been extensively used for monitoring water pollution. In the present study, TiO2 particles were dispersed and added to a Chlorella culture to emulate a natural scenario. To study the reaction of zebra mussels to different TiO2 concentrations, they were fed with 0.35, 0.7 and 3.5 mgTiO2/L of the suspension for 3days and the titanium was measured in the water column, mussels and sediments with ICP-AES. Zebra mussels obtained from the Port of Quebec had up 61.62mgTi/kg wet tissue at the time of capture. After 10days of depuration, they had from 0.23 to 16.28mgTi/kg wet tissue. Mussels accumulated TiO2 after 36h of exposition as a function of TiO2 concentration, but mussels did not present significant mortality due to TiO2 toxicity until concentrations higher than 0.7ppm. A second set of experiments was run to understand the TiO2 pathway attached to microalgae vs free TiO2. Results indicated that mussels accumulated slightly more Ti when it was mixed with microalgae. However, the statistical difference was non- significant. A 100 times higher accumulation of Ti in sediments was identified when mussels are present. Thus, it was concluded that the sedimentation of TiO2 is enhanced by the zebra mussels' filtration activity.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large group of chemicals. They represent an important concern due to their widespread distribution in the environment, their resistance to biodegradation, their potential to bioaccumulate and their harmful effects. Several pilot treatments have been implemented to prevent economic consequences and deterioration of soil and water quality. As a promising option, fungal enzymes are regarded as a powerful choice for degradation of PAHs. Phanerochaete chrysosporium, Pleurotus ostreatus and Bjerkandera adusta are most commonly used for the degradation of such compounds due to their production of ligninolytic enzymes such as lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase and laccase. The rate of biodegradation depends on many culture conditions, such as temperature, oxygen, accessibility of nutrients and agitated or shallow culture. Moreover, the addition of biosurfactants can strongly modify the enzyme activity. The removal of PAHs is dependent on the ionization potential. The study of the kinetics is not completely comprehended, and it becomes more challenging when fungi are applied for bioremediation. Degradation studies in soil are much more complicated than liquid cultures because of the heterogeneity of soil, thus, many factors should be considered when studying soil bioremediation, such as desorption and bioavailability of PAHs. Different degradation pathways can be suggested. The peroxidases are heme-containing enzymes having common catalytic cycles. One molecule of hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the resting enzyme withdrawing two electrons. Subsequently, the peroxidase is reduced back in two steps of one electron oxidation. Laccases are copper-containing oxidases. They reduce molecular oxygen to water and oxidize phenolic compounds.

Abstract The relative size of the Aristotle's lantern of most sea urchins varies in relation to the food availability and it is often used to infer the availability of food of the environment. The aim of our study was to evaluate the lantern morphology plasticity of Arbacia dufresnii in populations with different environmental characteristics, either mussel beds or disturbed areas, by the invasive alga Undaria pinnatifida along the Patagonian Atlantic coast. The test diameter of the sea urchins along with the weight and height of the lanterns, the jaw lenght and rotula lenght were measured. Classic and geometric morphometric analyses were performed to test differences among populations. The length of the jaw was the best indicator of relative changes in size of the lantern. The largest length of the jaw was measured in individuals from disturbed areas dominated by the invasive algae U. pinnatifida. The rotula shape changed with the increase of the diameter of the sea urchins, it tends to be more elongated with larger sea urchins. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (Suppl. 2): 339-351. Epub 2015 June 01.


Resumen El tamaño relativo de la linterna de Aristóteles en la mayoría de las especies de erizos de mar varía en relación con la disponibilidad de alimentos y se utiliza a menudo para inferir la disponibilidad de alimentos en el medio ambiente en que los erizos de mar habitan. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la plasticidad morfológica de la linterna de Aristóteles de Arbacia dufresnii en poblaciones con diferentes características ambientales, ya sean con bancos de mejillones o áreas modificadas por el alga invasora Undaria pinnatífida, a largo de la costa patagónica atlántica. Se midió el diámetro del caparazón, el peso y el alto de las linternas, la longitud de la semipirámide y la longitud de la rótula. Los datos se analizaron utilizando técnicas de morfometría clásica y geométrica con el objetivo de probar diferencias entre las poblaciones. La longitud de la semipirámide fue el mejor indicador para describir los cambios relativos en el tamaño de la linterna. La mayor longitud de la semipirámide se observó en las poblaciones que habitan áreas dominadas por el alga invasora U. pinnatifida. La forma de la semipirámide no varía entre las poblaciones ni con el tamaño de los erizos de mar, mientras que la forma de la rótula cambia en relación al tamaño de los erizos, siendo más alargada cuando el tamaño de los individuos es mayor.

Abstract Many studies have focused on the regeneration rate of arms in Asteroidea but no studies have focused on the regeneration rate after fission. Allostichaster capensis is a fissiparous sea star with a wide range of distribution. In Golfo Nuevo (42°46'49'' S - 64°59' 26'' W) sea stars undergo fission every spring and summer and regenerate the rest of the year. To analyze the regeneration rate, we conducted an experiment with sea stars collected just before fission. After sea stars underwent fission, the length of the three non-regenerating and the three regenerating arms were measured weekly. The arm length (regenerating and non-regenerating) was used in non-Linear Mixed Effect models in order to account for within-individual correlation in different models. The regenerating arms regenerate according to a Quadratic model, while the non-regenerating arms regenerate according to a linear model. In the regenerating arms, the regeneration rate was estimated to be 0.1 mm.week-1 and in the non-regenerating arms, the growth rate was 0.004 mm.week -1. Sea stars regenerate ca. 20 % of the arm in one month, and it takes about 5 months to be completely regenerated. At the beginning, the regeneration rate is fast generating the growth of the arms, once the pyloric caeca and gonads are present inside the arms the regeneration rate slows down probably due to allocation to gametes and pyloric caeca and arms. The factors that regulate the regeneration rate are unknown. However, food availability and energy storage seem to play an important role. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (Suppl. 2): 321-328. Resumen Numerosos estudios se han enfocado en estudiar la tasa de regeneración de brazos en Asteroidea, sin embargo ninguno se han centrado en la tasa de regeneración después del proceso de fisión. Allostichaster capensis es una estrella de mar fisípara con un amplio rango de distribución. En el Golfo Nuevo (42°46'49'' S - 64°59'26'' W) las estrellas de mar se fisionan cada primavera y verano y se regeneran durante el resto del año. Para analizar la tasa de regeneración, se realizó un experimento con estrellas de mar colectadas justo antes de la fisión. Después de estrellas de mar se fisionaron, se midió la longitud de los tres brazos en regeneración y de los tres brazos originales semanalmente. Se utilizaron modelos no lineales de efectos mixtos para analizar la correlación dentro de individuos del largo de los brazos (regenerados y que no regeneran). Los brazos en regeneración, regeneraron sus brazos de acuerdo con un modelo cuadrático, mientras que los brazos originales ajustaron a un modelo lineal. En los brazos de regeneración se estimó que la tasa de regeneración era de 0.1 mm/ semana; mientras que en los brazos originales, la tasa de crecimiento fue de 0.004 mm/semana. Las estrellas de mar se regeneran un 20 % aproximadamente del brazo en un mes, y tardan alrededor de cinco meses en estar completamente regenerado. Al principio, la alta tasa de regeneración genera el crecimiento rápido de los brazos en longitud, una vez que el ciego pilórico y las gónadas están presentes en el interior de los brazos; la tasa de regeneración disminuye, probablemente debido a la asignación de energía en la producción de gametas, en el ciego pilórico y en los brazos. Los factores que regulan la tasa de regeneración son desconocidos. Sin embargo, la disponibilidad de alimentos y el almacenamiento de energía parecen jugar un papel importante.

RESUMO

Triclosan (TCS) is a multi-purpose antimicrobial agent used as a common ingredient in everyday household personal care and consumer products. The expanded use of TCS provides a number of pathways for the compound to enter the environment and it has been detected in sewage treatment plant effluents; surface; ground and drinking water. The physico-chemical properties indicate the bioaccumulation and persistence potential of TCS in the environment. Hence, there is an increasing concern about the presence of TCS in the environment and its potential negative effects on human and animal health. Nevertheless, scarce monitoring data could be one reason for not prioritizing TCS as emerging contaminant. Conventional water and wastewater treatment processes are unable to completely remove the TCS and even form toxic intermediates. Considering the worldwide application of personal care products containing TCS and inefficient removal and its toxic effects on aquatic organisms, the compound should be considered on the priority list of emerging contaminants and its utilization in all products should be regulated.

The imposex incidence and TBT pollution were investigated along 4,700km of Argentinean coast, including city harbors and proximal zones without marine traffic. We analyzed 1805 individuals from 12 gastropod species, including families Volutidae, Muricidae, Nassariidea, Calyptraidae, Marginellidae, and Buccinidae, and found the imposex phenomenon for the first time in six species. In high marine traffic zones, TBT pollution was registered and the percentage of imposex was high, while these occurrences were null in areas without boat traffic. The species that best reflect the degree of imposex were those inhabiting sandy/muddy or mixed bottoms. TBT determination and imposex incidence indicate that pollution was focused only in ports with high marine traffic or in areas where ship hulls are painted. This is the first report of an imposex-sediment approach to evaluate organotin contamination along the coast of a South American country.
