RESUMO

Flabby ridge, also known as a mobile or displaceable ridge, is a common clinical challenge encountered in dental practice. The flabby ridge lacks firmness and stability, causing dentures to become loose and unstable. This can lead to discomfort, difficulty in speaking and eating, and a decreased quality of life for denture wearers. The flabby ridge often lacks the necessary contour and resilience to create an effective seal and maintain suction between the denture base and the underlying tissues. This compromises the retention of dentures, making them prone to dislodgement during normal oral functions. In this report, a modified window technique is presented for the impression of the anterior maxillary flabby ridge. The window ensures that no or little pressure is exerted on the flabby tissue. Therefore, this technique can be easily carried out by general dental practitioners, enabling them to manage flabby ridge complete denture cases within a primary dental care setting.

RESUMO

Cleft lip/palate is a common birth defect globally, and the impact of this condition on the dental health of affected individuals can be profound. During intricate rehabilitation of cleft lip and palate patients, the final phase is achieved with definitive prosthodontic treatment. Prosthodontic rehabilitation is often necessary due to missing teeth and the alveolar ridge, malocclusion, residual defects, and the discrepancy between maxillary and mandibular arches. This article presents a case report of a young female patient with residual post-surgical cleft palatal defect having a mobile anterior segment with missing lateral incisors rehabilitated by a cast partial denture. The prosthesis utilized provided improvements in the patient's speech and esthetics but at a low level of cost and ongoing maintenance.

RESUMO

Self-eating is a difficult task when hand and finger movements are restricted. Many patients find difficulty in holding utensils because of slender handles. It is essential to have a customized handle that will allow a better grip on traditional feeding aid. When the handle is customized to the patient's hands and fingers, patients will have better control while eating. This reduces their dependency on others, thus helping to regain their lost self-esteem. This technical report describes a simple method of fabricating a three-dimensional (3D)-printed ergonomically designed handle for a feeding aid from materials readily available in the dental office.

RESUMO

The loss of teeth, associated with sunken lips and cheeks, has a debilitating psychological effect on a person. It is essential for clinicians to incorporate facial esthetics into their treatment plan for complete denture patients in order to improve the patients' confidence and quality of life. Cheek plumpers ensure adequate support to facial muscles, which, in turn, minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and sagging over time. This case report describes the fabrication of detachable cheek plumpers using magnets to enhance the facial esthetics of a completely edentulous patient. Magnet-retained cheek plumpers, being small and lightweight, allow ease of placement and cleaning without the addition of weight to the prosthesis.

RESUMO

Comminuted mandibular fractures are common following a high-velocity injury to the face and jaws. The inherent nature of injury and damage to the underlying hard and soft tissues often complicate the management of comminuted fractures. Traditionally, comminuted fractures were managed by closed reduction and external skeletal fixation. Titanium mesh serves as an excellent alternative in the management of comminuted mandibular fractures. The present case report presents the successful management of comminuted mandibular fractures using titanium mesh.

RESUMO

A dimensionally accurate impression is one of the primary determinants for the precise fabrication of complete denture prostheses in microstomia patients. This can be achieved with the help of sectional trays. This technical report describes the fabrication of a sectional impression tray with a reusable sectional handle using magnets. The handles can be sterilized and reused, thus saving clinical time for future use. The proposed method provides ease of reassembling and disassembling, easy placement, and guided orientation of the two tray segments.

RESUMO

Denture marking is a unique way of identification and is mandated by the global dental council. There are various techniques for marking a denture depending on the prosthesis and method used. In this case report, an elderly patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease complained of a lack of heat and a cold feeling in the existing denture. The acrylic denture base is replaced by a metal denture and the palatal region is laser sintered with an Aadhar card QR code. This code reveals the patient's personal details when scanned. This provides quick identification of dentures.

RESUMO

Gagging poses a clinical difficulty to the dentist in all facets of therapy, from diagnostic techniques to active treatment. Various treatment methods to manage the gagging include behavioral techniques, acupressure, acupuncture, hypnosis, systemic desensitization, and pharmacological techniques. This article presents a straightforward method for getting rid of the gag reflex using an eye massager. Eye massagers can help reduce the stress and anxiety associated with dental procedures by providing an effective alternative to traditional methods. This technique can be a valuable aid in making short dental procedures more comfortable and successful.

RESUMO

Trauma during childhood can have an extreme mental jolt on the minds of growing children. The fundamentals of treatment of jaw fractures vary among children and adults. In children, minimal manipulation of facial skeleton is necessary to rehabilitate the supporting bony framework to pre-trauma condition. The procedure should not only be non-intrusive but also cause minimum malfunction and aesthetic disability. The case report presents the successful management of a seven-year-old boy with mandibular symphysis fracture using an acrylic cap splint retained with circum-mandibular wiring.

RESUMO

Clefts of the lip and palate are congenital anomalies that affect the orofacial region. Completely edentulous patients with a cleft palate present a unique challenge during complete denture fabrication. Complete dentures with an obturator and palatal extension need to be accurately fabricated to fulfill the functions of esthetics, speech, deglutition, and mastication. The case report presents the successful prosthodontic rehabilitation of a cleft palate female patient using a complete denture with a palatal obturator and pharyngeal extension. The palatal obturator extension provided good retention and stability for the maxillary denture. The patient's skill and previous experience with her old dentures played an important role in successful treatment. The patient was satisfied with dentures in terms of esthetics, chewing, swallowing, and speech.

RESUMO

Dental identification is the most reliable and frequently applied method of human identification, predominantly by comparing the antemortem and post-mortem records. Hence, all types of dental treatment should be recorded and kept properly. Aadhaar is a 12-digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India to all residents of India.Marking an Aadhar number on a surgical plate can play an important role in forensic identification when other methods fail. In the case presented here, considering the importance of forensic records, the patient's surgical plates were labeled with the Aadhar number using a laser. A little effort from all dental practitioners to get surgical plates marked with patient details can help in quick identification if the need arises in the future.

RESUMO

Microstomia presents a unique challenge to the dentist as well as the patient. Microstomia patients often face difficulty in inserting or removing removable dental prostheses due to constricted opening of the oral cavity. Dentists often face difficulty in inserting impression trays in these patients because of the limited mouth opening. Standard impression procedures need to be modified in such patients. This article describes a simple design for the fabrication of a sectional handle for a definitive impression in microstomia patients. The sectional handle could be sterilized and reused.
