RESUMO

The aim of this work was to study the application of resin filling containing nanomaterials for the potential treatment of caries. Zinc nanoparticles (ZnO@NP, 50 nm) were chosen for their antimicrobial capacity against aerobic bacteria, and here, they have proved to be bactericidal against anaerobic bacterial strains (Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus mitis, and Lactobacillus spp.). Potential mechanism of action is proposed based on microbiological assays and seems to be independent of oxidative stress because the nanoparticles are effective in microaerophilic conditions. The loading of nanoparticles on the demineralized dental surface and their infiltration power were significantly improved when ZnO@NP were carried by the resin. Overall, this material seems to have a high potential to become a one-step treatment for caries lesions.

RESUMO

We studied the effects of adverse conditions such as constant light (LL) on the circadian rhythm of malate (MDH, EC 1.1.1.37) and lactate (LDH, EC 1.1.1.27) dehydrogenase activities of the testes of male Wistar rats on postnatal day 28 (PN28), anxiety-like behavior (elevated plus-maze test) at PN60 and sexual behavior at PN120. The rats were assigned to mother groups on day 10 of pregnancy: control (12-h light/dark), LL (light from day 10 to 21 of pregnancy), and LL+Mel (LL and sc injection to the mothers of a daily dose of melatonin, 1 mg/kg body weight at circadian time 12, from day 17 to 21 of pregnancy). LL offspring did not show circadian rhythms of MDH (N = 62) and LDH (N = 63) activities (cosinor and ANOVA-LSD Fisher). They presented a 44.7 percent decrease in open-arm entries and a 67.9 percent decrease in time (plus-maze test, N = 15, P < 0.001, Mann-Whitney U-test and Kruskal-Wallis test), an increase in mounting (94.4 percent), intromission (94.5 percent) and ejaculation (56.6 percent) latencies (N = 12, P < 0.01, Mann-Whitney U-test and Kruskal-Wallis test) and lower numbers of these events (61, 59 and 73 percent, respectively; P < 0.01, N = 12) compared to controls. The offspring of the LL+Mel group presented MDH and LDH circadian rhythms (P < 0.05, N = 50, cosinor and ANOVA-LSD Fisher), anxiety-like and sexual behaviors similar to control. These findings supported the importance of the melatonin signal and provide evidence for the protective effects of hormones on maternal programming during gestation. This protective action of melatonin is probably related to its entrainment capacity, favoring internal coupling of the fetal multioscillatory system.

RESUMO

The authors describe a case of multiple myeloma that developed several extraskeletal localizations. They evaluated the relation between the onset of the testicular tumor and the following myeloma characteristics: tumor burden, clinical phase, response to therapy and prognostic significance. The patient presented a rapid and dramatic clinical evolution of the disease with extensive spread also to the soft tissues of the abdominal wall. Chemotherapy did not achieve any effect and the patient died due to progression of the myeloma.

RESUMO

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) is now recognized as one of the most important causes of hypercoagulability. The most common site for venous thrombosis in APS is deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities. Other sites of venous thrombosis include retinal veins, renal veins, and hepatic veins. The authors report a case of splenic vein thrombosis disclosing antiphospholipid syndrome in which also the cytolytic effect of aPL may play a role of "cofactor" in the genesis of thrombosis through the release of thromboplastin from the lysis of red cells, granulocytes and platelets, making them vulnerable to clearance by splenic macrophages. Important considerations are stressed about differential diagnosis, etiopathogenetic factors, therapy and follow-up of the patient.

RESUMO

Cats in the primary stage of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) infection and FIV seronegative cats were vaccinated with a modified live Feline Panleukopenia virus vaccine (FPV-MLV). The FPV-MLV strain was not pathogenic for FIV seronegative cats, whereas in FIV infected cats it produced severe clinical signs, similar to those typically observed in cats naturally infected with field strains of FPV (fever, diarrhoea, leukopenia).

The Authors report the isolation in Italy of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) from a cat inoculated with whole blood from a naturally FIV infected cat. The virus was isolated in feline circulating leucocytes cultured in RPMI medium and stimulated with concanavalin-A and recombinant human interleukin-2. The infected cultures showed a characteristic cytopathic effect (ballooning degeneration, giant cell formation, cell death) and a specific fuorescence using FIV-positive cat serum and monoclonal antibodies against FIV. Furthermore, the culture supernatants contained magnesium-dependent reverse transcriptase activity.

RESUMO

Recent studies have shown that there is a relationship between an alteration of central neurotransmitters and the modification of some biohumoral parameters in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). In this study the authors evaluated, after metoclopramide (MTC) stimulation, the concentration curve of vasopressin (AVP), prolactin (PRL) and growth hormone (HGH) in the plasma of 34 subjects (20 males and 14 females, mean age 70.5+/-6.9 years; 17 were AD patients, the others constituted the control group). MTC increased AVP serum concentration in healthy (P <0.001), but not in AD patients. This result seemed to be due to the lack of 'procholinergic' action of the drug in the AD patients probably due to an alteration in their cholinergic pathways. The PRL response to MTC was reduced only in the AD female group (P <0.005), suggesting an alteration in dopaminergic control. Lastly, the HGH response in AD did not differ in the two groups, neither in basal conditions, nor after MTC stimulation. The absence of HGH response both in AD and in healthy subjects, demonstrated the ineffectiveness of MTC stimulation. We can conclude that AVP and PRL responses to MTC stimulation efficiently separated the two groups (AD and controls); the former test showing a higher discriminant power than the latter.

RESUMO

Over the past ten years the Italian National Research Council (C.N.R.) has carried out an educational program based on the preparation and dissemination of guidelines to facilitate delivery in community hospitals of the most up-to-date care to patients with ovarian cancer. In 1988 an assessment was begun to determine (a) whether the guidelines reached the target physician population; (b) whether they were accepted by those they reached, and (c) whether treatment patterns thereafter conformed to the guidelines. Overall results of this evaluation provide no evidence of clinically relevant effects of the program. The guidelines were not widely disseminated: only 44% of responders were aware of them. Moreover, analysis of practice patterns showed serious deficiencies in diagnostic procedure and surgical staging (information on grading and residual tumour was available only in 30% and 45% of cases, respectively, and only 10% of the patients had random biopsies as part of their surgical staging). The only observation supporting some effect of this educational intervention in terms of knowledge modification was of certain therapeutic preferences among those aware of the guidelines. This finding, however, is highly susceptible to confounding by other factors (e.g. physicians' greater expertise, spillover effect of the program) not entirely avoidable in an observational study. We conclude that any assessment of procedures based on dissemination of information must include a careful analysis of the method of dissemination. The availability of clinically applicable information must also be realistically appraised before the guidelines approach can be accepted as the most effective.

RESUMO

The virological and serological studies previously carried out on arboviruses in Italy are reviewed. The presence of antibodies to 11 arboviruses was investigated in the serum of various domestic animals (100 horses, 107 pigs, 102 sheep, 205 goats, 100 cattle and 200 dogs) from some areas of Puglia. The techniques are described. The results, given in tables and discussed in detail, support the hypothesis that in this region also there are arboviruses circulating, particularly those of group B.
