RESUMO

We evaluated retrospectively, efficacy and safety of taliglucerase alfa for Gaucher disease in a Brazilian population. Thirteen patients were included for efficacy analysis only one of them naïve to enzyme replacement therapy. All the parameters evaluated remained stable throughout treatment (mean duration 3,5years). Only three patients (out of 35) had to discontinue treatment due to a serious adverse event. In conclusion, treatment with taliglucerase alfa was found to be safe and efficient.

This study conducted a systematic review to assess the bi-directional association between tooth loss/edentulism and obesity. Electronic searches were performed in four different databases. Observational studies that tested associations between tooth loss/edentulism and obesity as either exposures or outcomes were included. Additionally, meta-analyses, funnel plots and sensitivity analyses were conducted to synthesize the evidence. A total of 549 articles were identified in the electronic database search. Out of which, 16 studies were included within the meta-analyses: 75% considered tooth loss/edentulism as exposure and obesity as outcome, whereas 25% alternatively considered obesity as exposure and tooth loss/edentulism as outcome. Pooled estimates showed that obese individuals had 1.49 (95%CI 1.20-1.86) and 1.25 (95%CI 1.10-1.42) times higher odds of having any tooth loss and edentulism, respectively. Alternatively, when tooth loss or edentulism were considered as exposures, individuals with any tooth loss had 1.41 (95%CI 1.11-1.79) times higher odds for obesity, while edentates had even higher odds (OR 1.60; 95%CI 1.29-2.00). The results indicate a bi-directional association between tooth loss and obesity. Considering that all selected studies were of cross-sectional study design limiting inferences on temporality, longitudinal prospective studies are required to test the causal relationship between tooth loss/edentulism and obesity or vice a versa. © 2016 World Obesity.

The degradation photoproducts of the fungicide fenarimol obtained from irradiation of aqueous solutions with sunlight were characterised. The photoproducts resulting from samples with different exposure times were extracted and separated using chromatographic techniques. Seven main photoproducts were detected using high performance liquid chromatography with a photodiode array detector, gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detector and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Structures are suggested for possible photoproducts based on the characterisation results, minimum energy geometry of the parent compound, and the mass spectral behaviour of fenarimol. These correspond to the compounds with m/z 328 (three structural isomers (a), (b) and (c)), m/z 294 (two structural isomers (a) and (b)), m/z 292, 278 and 190. Of the various major products detected, the isomer 328(a) is seen to be particularly unstable under the action of sunlight. The most stable photoproducts are found to be those with m/z 294(a), 278 and 190. However, upon prolonged solar irradiation all of these break down to produce polar, low molecular weight compounds. Comparison with our own and other results on fenarimol photolysis indicate significant solvent effects on the process. The combination of these structural characterisation results and previous data from spectroscopic and photodegradation kinetics studies allows us to suggest some possible mechanisms for the photodegradation of fenarimol under sunlight.
