RESUMO

The ring nematode genus Xenocriconemella De Grisse and Loof, 1965 comprises only one nominal species, Xenocriconemella macrodora (Taylor, 1936) De Grisse and Loof, 1965. The initial objective of the present study was to investigate the morphological-morphometric and molecular diversity of 28 X. macrodora populations in the Iberian Peninsula associated with tree forests (mainly Quercus spp.). However, a detailed integrative taxonomic analysis (morphological-morphometric and molecular data) from each population and analysis of this data using principal component analysis (PCA) for morphometric data (including these 28 populations and other 25 X. macrodora populations around the world) and molecular and phylogenetic species delimitation methods revealed that X. macrodora forms a species complex. This species complex is composed by species that are morphometricly and morphologically similar, but clearly different at the molecular level. Three new species are described applying integrative taxonomy, namely as Xenocriconemella iberica sp. nov., Xenocriconemella paraiberica sp. nov. and Xenocriconemella pradense sp. nov. However, the molecular diversity of this species in USA and Italy confirmed that additional species are likely present in this species complex, and the diversity of this group may be higher than expected. The study of X. macrodora topotypes can clarify the position of this species using molecular markers under an integrative approach.

Round rays (family: Urotrygonidae) are commonly caught as by-catch by shrimp trawl fisheries in the tropical eastern Pacific (TEP). However, little information on their life history and catch species composition exists for most round ray species, preventing the evaluation of the impact of fishing on their populations. The mean size at sexual maturity (DW50), seasonal variation by maturity stages, and fecundity for two round ray species caught during shrimp trawl research cruises in the south-eastern Gulf of California (northern TEP) were estimated using a multi-model approach and inference for the first time, to determine the part of the population of each species that is being affected by shrimp trawling. Disc width (DW) ranged from 7.0 to 30.9 cm for the spotted round ray (Urobatis maculatus), and 7.2-33.5 cm for the thorny stingray (Urotrygon rogersi), with females reaching larger sizes than males in both species. The DW50 was estimated at 12.8 and 11.8 cm DW for the males and females of U. maculatus, respectively, whereas for U.rogersi, it was 15.0 and 18.4 cm DW for males and females, respectively. Embryos were found in females ≥14.5 cm DW in both species. The maximum fecundity was five embryos for U. maculatus (mean = 3.1 ± 0.2 S.E., mode = 4), and six embryos for U. rogersi (mean = 3.0 ± 0.3 S.E., mode = 2). Fecundity and embryo size did not vary with maternal size. Male and female immature and mature individuals for both species, including pregnant females, were found in the catches in all seasons of the year. Our results can help determine the vulnerability of the studied species populations to fishing pressure from shrimp trawling in the northern TEP and guide the development of future monitoring strategies and conservation actions for these species, if necessary.

In Brazil, most part of B. tabaci population outbreaks were associated with MEAM1, which, since 1990s quickly spread across the entire country. Later in 2014, the MED was identified in Brazil, initially more restricted to greenhouses, but suddenly reaching new areas in the South and Southeast open regions. Thus, our objective was to investigate the geographical distribution of MEAM1 and MED on open field crops in Brazil. MEAM1 is still the predominant species on open field crops such as soybean, cotton, and tomato. The sequencing of a cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene fragment revealed a single haplotype of MEAM1, suggesting the establishment of a single MEAM1 strain in the country. The haplotypes found for MEAM1 and MED are genetically related to the globally dispersed strains, Jap1 and Mch1, respectively. Continuous monitoring of B. tabaci species is crucial because landscape alterations, climatic changes, and pest management methods may shift the B. tabaci species distribution and dominance in Brazilian crop areas.

No Brasil, a maior parte dos surtos populacionais de mosca-branca são associados a presença da espécie MEAM1, que a partir 1990 se espalhou por todo o país. Por outro lado, em 2014 a espécie MED foi identificada no Brasil, inicialmente restrita a casas de vegetação, mas rapidamente se difundindo em novas áreas nas regiões Sul e Sudeste do Brasil. Assim, nosso objetivo foi investigar a distribuição geográfica das espécies MEAM1 e MED em grandes culturas no Brasil. A espécie MEAM1 continua sendo predominante nas monoculturas como algodão, soja e tomate. O sequenciamento de um fragmento do gene citocromo c oxidase subunidade I (COI) revelou a presença de um haplótipo para MEAM1, sugerindo o estabelecimento de apenas uma linhagem no país. Os haplótipos encontrados para MEAM1 e MED são geneticamente relacionados as linhagens globalmente dispersas Jap1 e Mch1, respectivamente. O monitoramento contínuo das espécies de B. tabaci é crucial pois as mudanças na paisagem, mudanças climáticas e métodos de manejo das pragas podem alterar a dominância e a distribuição dessas espécies nas áreas agrícolas do Brasil.

Two populations of the species Diastolaimus grossus have been obtained from bark of trees in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Czech Republic. The species is described and characterized in detail using morphological techniques (light and electron scanning microscopy) and morphometrical (Gower General Similarity coefficient of morphological characters) and molecular analyses, including phylogenetic analysis of all related and already sequenced species of the family Chambersiellidae. Morphological and molecular analyses, based on 18S and 28S ribosomal DNA sequences, show that the family Chambersiellidae is polyphyletic, being the subfamily Chambersiellinae related with Cephalobomorpha and Tylenchomorpha, and the subfamily Macrolaiminae is located into Panagrolaimomorpha. The genus Diastolaimus, previously belonging to Macrolaiminae, is transferred to Chambersiellinae. Diastolaimus mexicanus is proposed as a junior synonym of D. grossus.

INTRODUCTION: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative option for patients with Fanconi anemia (FA) and hematological manifestations but it does not prevent solid tumors, especially squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). METHODS: Retrospective study in 22 FA patients who had received HSCT and had been followed up beyond 2 years after HSCT. RESULTS: The median follow-up was 15 years. Six patients developed head-and-neck SCC after transplantation. The cumulative incidence of SCC at 15 and 30 years from the HSCT was 14.2% and 71.2%, respectively. One patient was diagnosed in stage IV and the rest, who were being followed up in cancer screening programs, in stage I. Treatment of SCC consisted of surgery in all patients; radiotherapy and chemotherapy were used in two patients and were poorly tolerated. CONCLUSION: FA patients have high risk of head-and-neck SCC. Multi-disciplinary programs for early cancer detection are of special relevance in these patients.

AIM: To identify existing controversies in the routine management of patients with T2D and to contrast them with the latest scientific evidence and clinical guidelines, in order to help optimize and homogenize the treatment of patients with T2D in Primary Care (PC) in Spain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 240 family doctors responded to an online questionnaire about the management of 6 patient profiles with T2D of increasing complexity. RESULTS: The main drivers for the antihyperglycemic treatment choice are an HbA1c>10% and the presence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), although in evolved patients, the estimated glomerular filtration rate and the risk of hypoglycemia become more relevant. In newly diagnosed patients with an HbA1c>9%, treatment is still initiated with monotherapy (24%). In patients not controlled with metformin, dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP4-I, 54%) or sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2-I, 39%) are usually added. On the other hand, type1 glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists (GLP1-RA) are mainly associated with obese patients with T2D. In patients not controlled with metformin+sulfonylurea (SU), SU replacement is preferred to adding a third antihyperglycemic agent to background therapy (77% vs. 23%). CONCLUSIONS: T2D treatment in PC is still focused on HbA1c reduction and treatment safety. Thus, DPP4-I are widely used. SGLT2-I are usually preferred for patients with T2D and CVD and GLP1-RA for patients with T2D and obesity, although their use in PC is low.

The nematode genus Acrobeles is composed of two morphological groups distinguished by the presence ('double' cuticle) or absence ('single' cuticle) of the refringent inner layer of the cuticle. In the present study, four species of this genus, two with 'single' cuticle (Acrobeles ciliatus and Acrobeles cylindricus) and two with 'double' (Acrobeles aenigmaticus and Acrobeles complexus) are studied from coastal dunes in Spain. This study provides detailed morphological and morphometrical analyses for the four species, while molecular analysis, based on 18S and 28S ribosomal DNA, is provided for A. complexus. The four species are studied with scanning electron microscopy, which is obtained for the first time for A. cylindricus. These analyses revealed morphological and molecular differentiations between both groups, appearing as two related monophyletic entities. The subgenera Acrobeles and Seleborca, formerly considered as separate genera, are proposed to accommodate both groups.

Three species belonging to the genus Macrolaimus, namely M. canadensis, M. crucis and M. ruehmi, have been obtained from areas of natural vegetation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Corsica (France), the Czech Republic and Spain. These three species are characterized by the body length of males and females, stomatal proportion of the gymnostom and cheilostom, excretory pore position, postvulval uterine sac length, male and female tail length and morphology, and the length and morphology of the spicules and gubernacula. The occurrence of M. crucis in Spain has, as a result of this study, now also been expanded to a larger area of the southern Iberian Peninsula. Morphological and morphometrical analyses showed that M. canadensis and M. ruehmi are very similar, sharing apomorphic characters. In contrast, M. crucis has plesiomorphic characters. Description, measurements and illustrations are provided for these three species.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) who suffer from type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are likely to be sub-optimally treated for their physical condition. This study aimed to review the effect of interventions in this population. METHODS: A systematic search in five databases was conducted in July 2017. RESULTS: Seven studies on multi-faced interventions were included. These comprised nutrition and exercise counselling, behavioural modelling and increased disease awareness aiming to reduce HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose, body mass index and weight. CONCLUSION: Non-pharmacologic interventions in individuals with SMI and T2DM could possibly improve measures of diabetes care, although with limited clinical impact.

This paper introduces a packet-based dual-rate control strategy to face time-varying network-induced delays, packet dropouts and packet disorder in a Networked Control System. Slow-rate sensing enables to achieve energy saving and to avoid packet disorder. Fast-rate actuation makes reaching the desired control performance possible. The dual-rate PID controller is split into two parts: a slow-rate PI controller located at the remote side (with no permanent communication to the plant) and a fast-rate PD controller located at the local side. The remote side also includes a prediction stage in order to generate the packet of future, estimated slow-rate control actions. These actions are sent to the local side and converted to fast-rate ones to be used when a packet does not arrive at this side due to the network-induced delay or due to occurring dropouts. The proposed control solution is able to approximately reach the nominal (no-delay, no-dropout) performance despite the existence of time-varying delays and packet dropouts. Control system stability is ensured in terms of probabilistic Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). Via real-time control for a Cartesian robot, results clearly reveal the superiority of the control solution compared to a previous proposal by authors.

The high mortality in neonatal sepsis has been related to both quantitative and qualitative differences in host protective immunity. Pretreatment strategies to prevent sepsis have received inadequate consideration, especially in the premature neonate, where outcomes from sepsis are so dismal. Aluminium salts-based adjuvants (alum) are used currently in many paediatric vaccines, but their use as an innate immune stimulant alone has not been well studied. We asked whether pretreatment with alum adjuvant alone could improve outcome and host innate immunity in neonatal mice given polymicrobial sepsis. Subcutaneous alum pretreatment improves survival to polymicrobial sepsis in both wild-type and T and B cell-deficient neonatal mice, but not in caspase-1/11 null mice. Moreover, alum increases peritoneal macrophage and neutrophil phagocytosis, and decreases bacterial colonization in the peritoneum. Bone marrow-derived neutrophils from alum-pretreated neonates produce more neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and exhibit increased expression of neutrophil elastase (NE) after in-vitro stimulation with phorbol esters. In addition, alum pretreatment increases bone marrow and splenic haematopoietic stem cell expansion following sepsis. Pretreatment of neonatal mice with an alum-based adjuvant can stimulate multiple innate immune cell functions and improve survival. These novel findings suggest a therapeutic pathway for the use of existing alum-based adjuvants for preventing sepsis in premature infants.

The application of pesticides to traditional and intensive olive orchards in Southern Spain has led to environmental problems. More specifically, the lack of an accurate, useful criterion to regulate the spray volume in relation to canopy characteristics has led to spray drift and runoff, which are threats to local ecosystems. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal relationship between canopy volume and the spray application volume, called specific spray volume, CV, through laboratory and field trials. In the laboratory trial, 6 specific spray volumes (0.05, 0.08, 0.10, 0.12, 0.15, and 0.20Lm(-3)) were tested in a specially designed structure containing small, live olive trees in order to simulate an intensive plantation system. The model aimed to evaluate the coverage of pesticide application on water sensitive paper (WSP) collectors. In the field trial, the three laboratory specific spray volumes that gave the best coverage values were tested on live, intensively managed trees, whose crown volume was manually measured. Food dye E-102 was used to determine the spray deposition on artificial targets (10×10cm absorbent paper pieces), and WSP was used to evaluate spray coverage. The spray penetration and deposit homogeneity inside the canopy were also evaluated. Weather conditions during the field trial were monitored with a weather station. The results of the laboratory trial showed that the three best specific spray volumes were 0.08, 0.10, and 0.12Lm(-3), resulting in mean coverage values of approximately 30%. The ANOVA of the field trial results showed that the 0.12Lm(-3) was the optimal specific spray volume for isolated olive trees. This specific spray volume gave the highest mean deposits, the best efficiency (as measured by the greatest normalized deposit), the most favourable penetration and homogeneity, and the highest coverage values.

The continuous generation of genetic variation has been proposed as one of the main factors explaining the maintenance of sexual reproduction in nature. However, populations of asexual individuals may attain high levels of genetic diversity through within-lineage diversification, replicate transitions to asexuality from sexual ancestors and migration. How these mechanisms affect genetic variation in populations of closely related sexual and asexual taxa can therefore provide insights into the role of genetic diversity for the maintenance of sexual reproduction. Here, we evaluate patterns of intra- and interpopulation genetic diversity in sexual and asexual populations of Aptinothrips rufus grass thrips. Asexual A. rufus populations are found throughout the world, whereas sexual populations appear to be confined to few locations in the Mediterranean region. We found that asexual A. rufus populations are characterized by extremely high levels of genetic diversity, both in comparison with their sexual relatives and in comparison with other asexual species. Migration is extensive among asexual populations over large geographic distances, whereas close sexual populations are strongly isolated from each other. The combination of extensive migration with replicate evolution of asexual lineages, and a past demographic expansion in at least one of them, generated high local clone diversities in A. rufus. These high clone diversities in asexual populations may mimic certain benefits conferred by sex via genetic diversity and could help explain the extreme success of asexual A. rufus populations.

Parasitism is a successful survival strategy across all kingdoms and has evolved repeatedly in angiosperms. Parasitic plants obtain nutrients from other plants and some are agricultural pests. Obligate parasites, which cannot complete their lifecycle without a host, may lack functional photosystems (holoparasites), or have retained photosynthesis (hemiparasites). Plastid genomes are often reduced in parasites, but complete mitochondrial genomes have not been sequenced and their mitochondrial respiratory capacities are largely unknown. The hemiparasitic European mistletoe (Viscum album), known from folklore and postulated therapeutic properties, is a pest in plantations and forestry. We compare the mitochondrial genomes of three Viscum species based on the complete mitochondrial genome of V. album, the first from a parasitic plant. We show that mitochondrial genes encoding proteins of all respiratory complexes are lacking or pseudogenized raising several questions relevant to all parasitic plants: Are any mitochondrial gene functions essential? Do any genes need to be located in the mitochondrial genome or can they all be transferred to the nucleus? Can parasitic plants survive without oxidative phosphorylation by using alternative respiratory pathways? More generally, our study is a step towards understanding how host- and self-perception, host integration and nucleic acid transfer has modified ancestral mitochondrial genomes.

Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients (oligosaccharides) that reach the colon and are used as substrate by microorganisms producing energy, metabolites and micronutrients used for the host; in addition they also stimulate the selective growth of certain beneficial species (mainly bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) in the intestinal microbiota. In this article, a multidisciplinary approach to understand the concept of prebiotic carbohydrates, their properties and beneficial effects in humans has been carried out. Definitions of prebiotics, reported by relevant international organizations and researchers, are described. A comprehensive description of accepted prebiotics having strong scientific evidence of their beneficial properties in humans (inulin-type fructans, FOS, GOS, lactulose and human milk oligosaccharides) is reported. Emerging prebiotics and those which are in the early stages of study have also included in this study. Taken into account that the chemical structure greatly influences carbohydrates prebiotic properties, the analytical techniques used for their analysis and characterization are discussed. In vitro and in vivo models used to evaluate the gastrointestinal digestion, absorption resistance and fermentability in the colon of prebiotics as well as major criteria to design robust intervention trials in humans are described. Finally, a comprehensive summary of the beneficial effects of prebiotics for health at systemic and intestinal levels is reported. The research effort on prebiotics has been intensive in last decades and has demonstrated that a multidisciplinary approach is necessary in order to claim their health benefits.


Los prebióticos son ingredientes alimentarios no digeribles (oligosacáridos) que llegan al colon y sirven de sustrato a los microorganismos, originando energía, metabolitos y micronutrientes utilizados por el hospedador y estimulando el crecimiento selectivo de determinadas especies beneficiosas (principalmente, bifidobacterias y lactobacilos) de la microbiota intestinal. En este artículo se realiza una revisión sobre los carbohidratos prebióticos desde diferentes perspectivas, comenzando por las definiciones de prebióticos formuladas a lo largo de los últimos treinta años por científicos y diferentes organismos internacionales. Se realiza una descripción detallada de los prebióticos aceptados, como tales, que presentan propiedades beneficiosas fundamentadas en estudios llevados a cabo en humanos (fructanos tipo inulina y FOS; GOS, lactulosa y oligosacáridos de leche humana), los que se consideran prebióticos emergentes y aquellos que se encuentran en fases iniciales de estudio. Además y teniendo en cuenta que la estructura química de los carbohidratos influye notablemente en sus propiedades prebióticas, se describen las técnicas más utilizadas para su análisis y caracterización. Asimismo, se detallan los modelos in vitro e in vivo más utilizados para estudiar la resistencia de los prebióticos a la digestión y la absorción gastrointestinal, la fermentación de los prebióticos en el colon así como los criterios a tener en cuenta para llevar a cabo ensayos de intervención en humanos. Por último se realiza una amplia descripción de los efectos beneficiosos de los prebióticos para la salud a nivel intestinal y sistémico. Como conclusión, podría decirse que la investigación existente hasta el momento, sobre prebióticos, es extensa y pone de manifiesto que es necesario considerar un gran número de factores para poder atribuir alegaciones de salud a un prebiótico.

BACKGROUND: Systolic aortic regurgitation (SAR) is a curious phenomenon that has been found to be associated with heart failure (HF). We aimed to determine de diagnostic value of SAR as a black box predictive tool in patients with suspected HF admitted to hospital with dyspnea as leading symptom. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cross-sectional study including 269 consecutive patients admitted to hospital with dyspnea as leading symptom without definite clinical diagnosis. SAR was defined by echocardiography as the presence of blood flow from the aorta to the left ventricular outflow tract during a complete systole. The reference standard was the presence of HF diagnosis at discharge. SAR was present in 9 (3.3%) patients. Prevalence of HF was 40.3%. Specificity of SAR in the diagnosis of HF was high at 99.4% (95% CI 96.5-99.9%). Sensitivity was 7.5% (95% CI 3.9-14.2%). Positive predictive value (PPV) was 88.9% (95% CI 56.5-98.0%). Positive likelihood ratio was 11.85. Estimated PPV of SAR was significantly higher than 50% for any hypothetical prevalence of HF. CONCLUSION: In patients admitted to hospital with dyspnea, the finding of systolic aortic regurgitation in echocardiography has a high PPV for HF diagnosis at discharge.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a frequent complication in patients with liver transplantation (LT), and calcineurin inhibitor chronic nephrotoxicity, mediated by transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-ß1) is an important contributing factor. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of genetic polymorphisms of TGF-ß1 in the development of CKD at 6 months after transplantation. METHODS: One hundred sixty-four LT patients (63.4% male; overall mean age, 48.7 ± 11.6 years) were included in the analysis. CKD was considered at the 6th month after LT and was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of <60 mL/min/1.73 m(2) as calculated on the basis of Modification of Diet in Renal Disease 4-variable equation. TGF-ß1 +869 C/T and +915 G/C polymorphisms were analyzed with the use of hybridization with fluorescent probes and analysis by means of flow cytometry with the Luminex system. The association between the presence of CKD at 6 months and these polymorphisms, as well as with other known risk factors for CKD after LT, was considered. RESULTS: In the univariate analysis, the TT genotype of TGF-ß1 +869 (P = .036; odds ratio, 2.1; 95% confidence interval, 1.1-4.2), age at LT (P < .001), pre-transplantation serum creatinine levels (P = .03), eGFR (P < .001), CKD (P = .027), and immunosuppression with cyclosporine (P = .017) were associated with CKD at 6 months after transplantation. In the multivariate analysis, TGF-ß1 +869TT genotype (P = .017), immunosuppression with cyclosporine (P = .002), age at LT (P = .024), and pre-transplantation CKD (P < .001) remained as independent variables associated with the development of CKD at 6 months after transplantation. CONCLUSIONS: The genetic polymorphism TGF-ß1 +869 C/T may be an independent risk factor for CKD after liver transplantation.
