RESUMO

Introduction: Culture plays a fundamental role in shaping human behavior, with individualism and collectivism being key cultural dimensions. However, existing scales for measuring these constructs, such as the INDCOL scale, have demonstrated issues when applied in diverse cultural contexts. To address this, we present the translation and adaptation of the Mexican Vertical and Horizontal Individualism and Collectivism Scale (MXINDCOL) into English, aiming to identify both universal and culture-specific elements. Methods: Data were collected from 1124 participants (371 from the United States, 753 from Mexico) using the MXINDCOL and INDCOL scales. Propensity score matching was applied to balance demographic differences between the samples. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) assessed model fit, and cross-cultural measurement invariance was examined. Reliability, convergent and discriminant validity were also assessed. Results: The English-translated MXINDCOL scale demonstrated good model fit in both US and Mexican samples, outperforming the INDCOL scale. Reliability values were higher for the MXINDCOL scale compared to INDCOL. Cross-cultural measurement invariance was established, allowing for meaningful comparisons between the two cultures. US participants scored higher on vertical collectivism, while Mexican participants scored higher on horizontal collectivism and horizontal individualism. Discussion: The MXINDCOL scale offers a culturally sensitive measurement of individualism and collectivism, addressing issues found in existing scales. It provides a more accurate assessment of cultural orientations and enriches the understanding of cultural dimensions by incorporating idiosyncratic elements. Further research in diverse cultural contexts is recommended to validate and refine the scale, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of cultural variations in individualism and collectivism.

Abstract The purpose of this work was to develop and psychometrically validate a Scale to measure romantic jealousy on Facebook and WhatsApp, also evidence of non-differential function of the items by sex is presented in the form of a factorial invariance test. Two groups of Participants from Mexico City worked on, 300 for an exploratory factor analysis and 300 for confirmatory factor analysis and invariance testing. A structure was found with 24 items, adequate reliability (α .96) corrects fit [χ2 (246) = 433.99, p <.01; CF1 = .99; RMSEA = .05] and factorial invariance by sex, so it is concluded that the Scale is reliable, valid, and allows sex comparison by sex without bias due to measurement.

RESUMO

Abstract Almost every person has to deal with transgressions committed by a romantic partner and faces their negative psychological outcomes, and coping strategies might be key to understanding post-transgression dynamics and forgiveness. We tested the construct validity of the Inventory of Strategies for Coping with a Partner's Transgression which include the emotion (E-FCS), problem (P-FCS), and meaning-focused coping strategies (M-FCS) scales. Results replicated the factor structure of each of the three scales through confirmatory factor analysis techniques, tested its reliability with the McDonald's omega coefficient, and then correlated the scales with forgiveness and resentment, strengthening its construct validity. In general, the validity and reliability of scales were confirmed. Emotion-focused strategies showed a negative correlation with forgiveness, while problem and meaning-focused strategies had a positive correlation. These findings were discussed in the context of theory and their practical implications.

The extent to which culture moderates the effects of need for approval from others on a person's handling of interpersonal conflict was investigated. Students from 24 nations rated how they handled a recent interpersonal conflict, using measures derived from face-negotiation theory. Samples varied in the extent to which they were perceived as characterised by the cultural logics of dignity, honour, or face. It was hypothesised that the emphasis on harmony within face cultures would reduce the relevance of need for approval from others to face-negotiation concerns. Respondents rated their need for approval from others and how much they sought to preserve their own face and the face of the other party during the conflict. Need for approval was associated with concerns for both self-face and other-face. However, as predicted, the association between need for approval from others and concern for self-face was weaker where face logic was prevalent. Favourable conflict outcome was positively related to other-face and negatively related to self-face and to need for approval from others, but there were no significant interactions related to prevailing cultural logics. The results illustrate how particular face-threatening factors can moderate the distinctive face-concerns earlier found to characterise individualistic and collectivistic cultural groups.

RESUMO

(1) Background: Adherence to treatment and medical check-ups are important for health outcomes, but low adherence to treatment is a common phenomenon. Thus, we aimed to examine the role of cultural beliefs about physicians, perceived mistreatment, and emotions associated with the experience of mistreatment as an antecedent of healthcare behavior among Chilean and Mexican primary care patients using Betancourt's model for the study of health behavior. (2) Methods: This is a multivariate cross-sectional study with a non-probabilistic sample of 326 Mexican and 337 Chilean participants. Multigroup structural equation modeling was used to test the structural relations among the cultural and psychological variables as determinants of healthcare avoidance behavior. (3) Results: The results revealed a pattern of associations that work in the same way for Chilean and Mexican samples. Negative cultural beliefs about physicians have a direct effect on avoidance behaviors in healthcare. In addition, this effect is mediated through psychological factors, such as perception of mistreatment and negative emotions associated with mistreatment. (4) Conclusions: A structural invariance test showed that the perception of mistreatment and negative emotions were less intense for Chileans than Mexicans. In contrast, the association between negative emotions and avoidance behaviors was less intense for Mexicans.

Abstrac The objective of this study was to understand the impact of the Mental Contrasting and Implementation Intentions (MCII) self-regulation technique as a complement to an intervention based on the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) to perform exercise. Seventy-six participants with body mass index (BMI) ≥25 who wanted to lose weight (Mage =40 years; MBMI =29) were recruited. Participants were randomized into two conditions: HAPA (n=36) and HAPA + MCII (n=40). The variables of interest (self-reported hours of exercise, body measurements and psychological health with DASS-21 and IWQOL-Lite) were measured at the beginning, in week 6 and in 12. We found a significant increase in the hours of exercise and significant decrease in BMI and IWQOL-Lite Physical Functioning and Self-esteem when comparing the occasions of measurement for the total sample. Greater effects of the HAPA + MCII protocol were observed than of the HAPA for the study variables, with the exception of the DASS-21 Anxiety and the IWQOL-Lite Sexual life. However, the differences were not statistically significant. The study indicates the important role of self-efficacy and its operationalization for a successful intervention. When combining two protocols, the ceiling effect that can be obtained with a single protocol should be considered.

RESUMO

Epidemiological estimates indicate that approximately 12% of children and adolescents in Mexico are in clinical ranges for psychological disorders. Low-income families in need of psychological support generally encounter understaffed and sometimes inefficient public health services and thus, families frequently constitute the primary source of support for individuals affected by mental health disorders. Empirical studies in the Mexican context have demonstrated that positive parental practices are associated with positive developmental outcomes and low levels of problem behaviors for both children and adolescents. This study aims to identify if such practices act as protective factors for problem behaviors in 306 Mexican students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades from 3 public elementary school s in Mexico City. Practices of maternal autonomy and communication as well as maternal warmth were found to significantly diminish internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors, while parental involvement and communication only reduced externalizing problem behaviors. Findings have implications for social welfare programs that target positive youth development and supportive parenting.

Historical Sociocultural Premises (PHSCs) are norms and beliefs that regulate the behavior of each culture. A premise for Mexican couples is that "Commitment gives formality to couple relationships". However, individuals do not passively receive PHSCs, they modify or contradict them with their actions, which can lead to cognitive dissonance. So, dissonance occurs when two incongruous cognitions coexist in an individual, caused by either receiving new information or transgressing a cultural norm. The objective of the study is in order to verify if counter attitudinal opinions on PHSCs about commitment in couple relationships cause cognitive dissonance in individuals, measured as anxiety. We designed an experiment where we manipulated the PHSCs about couple relationships that individuals received, and the status of the source they came from: 2 (PHSC: Concordant / Counter attitudinal) × 2 (High and low status sources). We measured state anxiety as a dependent variable and the participants' level of commitment in their couple relationship as a covariate. 41 individuals participated. The results of this research showed that, in the low status source group, participants with a concordant PHSC were more worried, while those who received a counter attitudinal PHSC were calmer. In the first group, there was dissonance due to two incongruous cognitions (educational level and thinking like a low status source), which affected their self concept, while the condition of high status article did not generate any differences

RESUMO

Abstract An addictive behavior is considered to exist when there is excessive use, loss of control and tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms which cause negative repercussions in everyday life and become a concern where other psychopathological problems may manifest. The objective of this study was to develop an explanatory model of cybervictimization, depression, suicidal ideation and addictive behavior toward social media. Instruments that measured these variables were applied to a total sample of 406 university students. A significant correlation was found between addictive behavior toward social media, cybervictimization, depression, and suicidal ideation. The model explained that cybervictimization and depression can lead to two outcomes: an addictive behavior toward social media, or suicidal thoughts. These results contribute to a better understanding of current phenomenon such as cybervictimization and addictive behavior toward social media with respect to depression and suicidal ideation. A deeper investigation is recommended to create preventive and intervention programs for healthy Internet usage for young people.

Abstract Consumer decision-making is part of the purchase process. Therefore, as a relevant element for the evaluation of the purchase process, it is essential to have valid, reliable and culturally relevant measurements. For that reason, in this study the development and validation of the Purchases Decision-Making Inventory (PDMI) are presented. The general sample consisted of 518 Mexican participants, which were randomly divided into two groups, 300 for exploratory analysis, and 218 for confirmatory analysis. The results show that PDMI evaluated from its general components of emotional and reasoned decisions in purchases, present high internal consistency. The confirmatory factor analysis shows a good fit to dimensions extracted from the exploratory analyses. In terms of convergent, divergent, and discriminant validity, relations according to the nomological network were found, and the factors showed independency. Finally, from the confirmed structures of the inventory, spending per week was modelled, finding that emotional decisions turned out to be a positive significant predictor. PDMI is an evaluation tool with cultural relevance and appropriate psychometric indexes that can be used to integrate into consumer behavior models.

Abstract The objective of this research project was to construct a reliable and culturally relevant scale to measure aggressiveness in Mexican adults. A 96-item Likert scale was designed, on the basis of indicators drawn from a preliminary study and of theoretical formulations. Participants were volunteers from Mexico City. Five factors were obtained that group together 25 items explaining 61.59 % of the variance, 0=0.92. In another study, a confirmatory factor analysis was performed, which showed adequate indexes of adjustment. Subsequently, correlations between personality and aggressiveness were obtained. Results show that the extroversion, affability, responsibility, and openness factors are negatively associated with aggressiveness, while neuroticism is positively associated. With respect to differences by sex, findings indicate that men show higher reactivity levels and women, higher frustration levels. The conclusion is that the scale is a valid and reliable instrument that makes it possible to identify differences among the five big personality traits, as well as between men and women.

RESUMO

Abstract Self-concept has been crucial to the description of human beings since ancient times. Different authors have offered definitions and approaches to the study of the self. Many instruments have been developed to measure this multifaceted construct. However, there is great difficulty in using definitions and instruments developed in one ecosystem to describe the peoples from different cultures. In order to include the universals and idiosyn-crasies of the self, a model that takes culture into account is needed. The purpose of this article is to compare the cognitive, emotional, and motivational aspects of the self-concept in different countries representing the east-west and north-south axis, such as Mexico, Peru, Japan, China, United States and Chile, from a psycho-socio-cultural point of view. The paradigm for this purpose included descriptions and comparisons based on Hofstede´s cultural syndromes, as well as an overview of some instruments that have been used to measure the construct. The discussion focuses on the importance of considering culture to understand the meanings of this construct, placing emphasis on the methodological tools derived from the theoretical orientation and the attentions that must be had when making cross-cultural comparisons, be it Between countries and even within the same country. This means that we must not forget the aspects shared by cultures in the relationship with oneself (etic), but we must forget about the particular aspects (emic) or idiosyncratic aspects, which are what are finally given by the particularities to self-concept.

Abstract Individuals who belong to a high-status group, such as men, tend to use stereotypes in their benefit. Sexism towards men is a prejudice whose consequences are not limited to individual and group level, but also at social level. The Theory of Ambivalent Sexism proposes two dimensions of sexism: Hostile Sexism and Benevolent Sexism. Hostile sexism towards men refers to people who have explicitly negative beliefs towards them; Benevolent Sexism refers to attitudes that can be considered as positive, but that reaffirm the sexual dependence and intimacy of men towards women. The present study proposes Sexism towards women, the Belief in the Just World and the Individualism-Collectivism, as predictors of sexism towards men. We use Linear regressions. Participated 200 people between 18 and 27 years old. The results indicate that both, sexism towards women and sexism towards men, are part of the same power dynamics, which reinforces inequality between sexes and that justify the social dynamics.

RESUMO

Abstract: Researchers are making increasing use of the distinction between cultural logics emphasizing dignity, face, and honor. Students from eight nations including two from Latin America rated items tapping the extent to which they believed that most persons in their nation endorsed these types of mindset. Their ratings did not accord with prior beliefs as to which cultures exemplify dignity, face, and honor. However, the predictions that analytic cognition would be more prevalent in dignity cultures and contrasting types of holistic cognition would be more prevalent in face and honor cultures were supported. The belief that the logic of dignity was prevalent within one's nation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction.
