We analyzed the soil at the site of a former coking wastewater treatment plant on redeveloped land in Taiyuan, northern China, in an attempt to detect the presence of 16 types of priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and evaluate the potential pollution risks. The results show that the total proportion of PAHs in the surface soil of the redeveloped land ranged from 0.3 to 1092.57 mg/kg, with an average value of 218.5 mg/kg, mainly consisting of high-ring (5-6 rings) components. Characteristic ratio analysis indicated that the pollution was mainly related to the combustion of petroleum, coal, and biomasses. The wastewater treatment units operated according to the following treatment train: advection oil separation tank, dissolved air flotation tank, aerobic tank, secondary sedimentation tank, and sludge concentration tank. Our study found that pollution resulting from low-ring PAHs mainly appeared in the advection oil separation tank during the pre-wastewater treatment stage, while medium-ring PAH contamination mainly occurred in the dissolved air floatation tank, aerobic tank, and secondary sedimentation tank during the middle stages of wastewater treatment. High-ring PAH contamination primarily appeared in the sludge concentration tank in the latter stage of wastewater treatment. Based on our assessment of the ecological risk using the Nemerow Comprehensive Pollution Index and the toxicity equivalent factor (TEF) method, we determined that individual PAHs in the study area exceeded acceptable levels and the total amount of pollution was potentially harmful to the ecological environment. In addition, the comprehensive lifetime cancer risk for different populations resulting from exposure to the soil in the study area was determined to be within acceptable limits based on the average PAH concentrations.

The antibiotic distributions, partitioning, and migration pathways in river basins have withdrawn great attention in the past decades. This study investigates 26 antibiotics of five classifications in surface water and sediment samples at 23 sites in Fenhe River, a typical tributary of Yellow River. There are 21 antibiotics found in the water samples at the concentration from 113.8 to 1106.0 ng/L, in the decreasing order of SAs > QNs > MLs > TCs > CAs. Fifteen antibiotics were detected in the sediment at the concentrations from 25.11 to 73.22 µg/kg following the decreasing order of SAs > MLs > TCs > QNs > CAs. The antibiotic concentrations vary greatly in surface water, generally lower in upstream and in reservoirs, and reaching highest in the midstream of the Fenhe River after passing Taiyuan and Jinzhong, and then lower again in the downstream. The antibiotic concentrations in sediment have a less variation in the entire river basin, but become high in the downstream. The results show the water-sediment partitioning coefficients of antibiotics generally were lower than those in other areas, having a migration path from the water to suspended solids, and then accumulated in sediment. The water-sediment partitioning coefficients also vary across the basin. The water-sediment partitioning coefficients of sulfacetamide and tetracycline are higher than the water-sediment partitioning coefficients of other antibiotics, with less variation across the basin, the water-sediment partitioning coefficients of azithromycin, enrofloxacin, and roxithromycin are low in the midstream of the river, and high at the river source and downstream. The water-sediment partitioning coefficients are significantly affected by the pH of sediment and the particle size of sediment. The prediction models of water-sediment partitioning coefficients for antibiotics are constructed with the selected effecting factors. The simulation values of antibiotics except chlortetracycline and erythromycin are highly consistent with the observed values, indicating that the prediction model is reliable.

An efficient pretreatment and analytical method was developed to investigate the occurrence and fate of four free estrogens (estrone (E1), 17ß-estradiol (17ß-E2), estriol (E3), and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2)), four conjugated estrogens (estrone-3-sulfate sodium salt (E1-3S), 17ß-estradiol-3-sulfate sodium salt (E2-3S), estrone-3-glucuronide sodium salt (E1-3G), and 17ß-estradiol-3-glucuronide sodium salt (E2-3G)), and bisphenol A (BPA) in three livestock farms raising beef cattle, cows, sheep, swine, and chickens in Qi County, which is located in North China. The results demonstrated that one cow and one beef cattle excreted 956.25-1,270.41 and 244.38-319.99 µg/day of total (free and conjugated) estrogen, respectively, primarily through feces (greater than 91%), while swine excreted 260.09-289.99 µg/day of estrogens, primarily through urine (98-99%). The total estrogen excreted in sheep and broiler chicken feces was calculated to be 21.64-28.67 and 4.62-5.40 µg/day, respectively. It was determined that conjugated estrogens contributed to 21.1-21.9% of the total estrogen excreted in cow feces and more than 98% of the total estrogen excreted in swine urine. After composting, the concentration of total estrogen decreased by 18.7-59.6%; however, increased levels of BPA were measured. In treated compost samples, estrogens were detected at concentrations up to 74.0 ng/g, which indicates a potential risk of estrogens entering the surrounding environment.
