RESUMO

The threat of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic systems is almost a new challenge in environmental management. The municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) act both as collectors of MPs from anthropic use and as a source to natural environments. This study is aimed to determine the abundance, characteristics, and removal of MPs in a municipal WWTP with conventional activated sludge process. Particle size/type, influent loads, and removal rate of MPs in bar screen, grit chamber, primary sedimentation, returned activated sludge, and secondary clarification units of this WWTP were studied by collecting composite samples from wastewater and sludge over a 3-month sampling campaign. Suspected MP particles were counted by light microscopy and characterized using SEM, EDS, FTIR, and TGA-DSC techniques. The mean total MPs, fibers, and fragment concentration after the grit chamber were 6608, 3594, and 3014 which were reduced to 1855, 802, and 1053 particles/L in the effluent, respectively. The sludge retention of total MPs, fibers, and fragments were 8001, 3277, and 4719 particles/L, respectively. The overall efficiency of WWTP with an activated sludge process to remove MPs was 64% and it removed 66.6% and 60% of fibers and fragments, respectively. Fibers were the dominant shape for the collected samples after the grit chamber and fragments were prevalent in the effluent. Polyethylene polymer was detected in most wastewater samples. Existing treatment processes are effective in the removal of MP particles but still act as a potential source to the aquatic ecosystem.

The present study aimed to investigate the rate of accumulation, human health risk assessment, and nitrate-related transfer factor in vegetables irrigated with different sources, including treated wastewater effluent (TWE) of Kermanshah wastewater treatment plant, Gharasoo river water (RW) of Kermanshah, and well water with chemical fertilizer (WWF). For this purpose, three different types of vegetables, including basil, coriander, and radish, was cultivated, and each of them was irrigated by the three irrigation sources mentioned above. Finally, the amount of nitrate in different sources of irrigation, soil (before growing vegetables and after harvesting vegetables), and the mentioned vegetables was measured. Based on the study results, it can be concluded that the water of the Gharasoo River (RW), compared to the other two irrigation sources, causes more nitrate accumulation in the soil and vegetables grown in it. The highest transmission factor was related to basil vegetables irrigated with WWF. The results showed that the average daily intake of nitrate through the consumption of vegetables grown in Kermanshah with any irrigation water is less than the allowable amount, so the consumption of such vegetables is not dangerous to consumers' health. Therefore, it is suggested that the best irrigation source for vegetable cultivation in Kermanshah is TWE, provided that all of its physical, chemical and microbial parameters meet the standards for reuse in agriculture irrigation. Thus, the use of treated wastewater reduces the need for farmers to use chemical and organic fertilizers and cost-effectiveness, high frequency, and high availability.

This study was aimed to investigate the distribution of various species of fecal coliform in urban, rural and private drinking water sources of Kermanshah, in the west of Iran. For this study, data of ten years period (2006-2016) assessments of microbial quality regarding various species of Fecal coliforms was taken from health centers associated with urban, rural and private resources of Kermanshah city. A total number of 8643 samples were taken, 1851 samples from rural, 365 from urban and 4834 from private resources. The results showed that Fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli (E. coli) had the widest distribution in all urban, rural and private water resources (22.3%, 45.9% and 34%, respectively). Moreover, E. coli (47.5%) and Klebsiella (0.4%) had, respectively, the highest and lowest distribution in all months considered. Based on the results, E.coli exists mostly in water resources; it is therefore of particular importance in the monitoring of water resources.

Effects of low (1, 2.5 and 5Gy) and high doses (10, 20 and 40Gy) of gamma radiation were examined on the growth, survival, blood parameters and morphological changes of the intestines of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae (103±20mg) after 12 weeks of exposure. Negative effects of gamma radiation on growth and survival were observed as radiation level and time increased. Changes were well documented at 10 and 20Gy. All the fish were dead at the dose of 40Gy. In all the treatments, levels of red blood cells (RBC), hematocrit (HCT) and hemoglobin (HB) were significantly (P<0.05) declined as the irradiation levels increased, whereas the amount of mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) did not change. No significant differences (P>0.05) were found in the levels of white blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes and monocytes. Destruction of the intestinal epithelium cells was indicated as the irradiation levels increased to 1Gy and above. The highest levels of growth, survival, specific growth rate (SGR), condition factor (CF) and protein efficiency rate (PER) were obtained in the control treatment. The results showed that gamma rays can be a potential means for damaging rainbow trout cells.
