The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the well-being of university students, particularly those in healthcare and medical programs. Psychological interventions rooted in positive psychology have proven effective in enhancing mental health, with online and digital delivery methods proving to be equally viable. This study aims to enhance mental health among Italian university students through digital interventions, including virtual reality, utilizing a stepped care approach. Specific objectives include implementing online positive interventions for students experiencing mild distress (DigiWell_Step 1), evaluating a Virtual-Reality intervention for moderate distress (DigiWell_Step 2), and identifying students experiencing high distress or optimal well-being. Cluster analyses and linear models will assess intervention outcomes. It is anticipated that students undergoing these steps will experience significant improvements in well-being and distress reduction, with sustained benefits at a three-month follow-up. This research contributes to understanding the efficacy of mental health interventions for university students, leveraging digital technologies to enhance accessibility and user engagement. The integration of digital technologies enhances the cost-effectiveness and engagement of interventions delivered through a stepped care approach tailored to the targeted population.
RESUMO
Patient experiences and ideas are key components for improving health promotion and prevention. Engaging patients and other stakeholders in sharing their practices and ideas is nowadays crucial to increase the legitimacy, credibility, and acceptability of the decisions in these fields, by fostering community wisdom. The World Café is a participatory method suitable to involve a large number of actors to propose creative solutions based on their different knowledge and experiences. However, the diffusion of this approach is not uniform in the various countries and health topics. This review summarises the specific topic, the study design, the number and the characteristics of participants, as well as the main findings and the purpose of the studies regarding the application of this method to health promotion and prevention. Among other results, it was found that the World Café is an appreciated, inspiring, and flexible participatory process often used in association with one or more other methods, to explore emergent themes or topics, to collect best practices or suggestions, to generate improvements or recommendations, and to define priorities for the implementation of projects or research agendas. The results highlight the potentiality of the World Café whenever an issue is not well defined and needs to be explored through deep and several insights. The method allows the exploitation of creativity and collective wisdom when qualitative and in-dept results-more than quantitative and statistically rigorous ones-are appropriate.

BACKGROUND: The association between ulcerative colitis and thyroid disorders has been previously reported. However, most reports consist of single case description, and a systematic assessment of this relationship has only sporadically been investigated. AIMS: To study a cohort of patients with ulcerative colitis to establish the prevalence of hyper- and hypothyroidism. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During a four-year period, we studied thyroid function in 162 ulcerative colitis patients (62 men, 100 women, age range 18-78 years). RESULTS: Thyroid dysfunction was present in 4 patients (2.5%) of the overall population and was represented by both hypo- (3 patients) and hyperthyroidism (1 patient). The incidence of this kind of thyroid dysfunction was significantly (p=0.03) lower than that found in a large (more than 5000 subjects) control group. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the prevalence of hyper-/hypothyroidism is relatively low in patients with ulcerative colitis, at least in our country, and does not justify a systematic investigation of the thyroid function, except in selected cases, probably those with scarce or no response to standard therapeutic measures.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Bowel urgency is the most bothersome symptom in irritable bowel syndrome patients with diarrhea, but its pathophysiology is poorly understood. Our aim was to assess the relationships among reporting the symptom, the reservoir functions of the colon and rectum, and the patients' psychologic profile. METHODS: The study involved 28 consecutive patients with irritable bowel syndrome and 17 healthy subjects. The presence or absence of bowel urgency was verified by means of a questionnaire during the 3 days required for the ingestion of radio-opaque markers. On the fourth day, an abdominal x-ray was taken to assess colonic transit time, and rectal sensory and motor responses were measured during rectal distention. The subjects' psychologic profiles were assessed using a psychologic symptoms checklist. RESULTS: Forty-six percent of the patients reported urgency associated with at least 1 defecation. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that colonic transit was the only variable independently associated with reported bowel urgency, but the threshold for the sensation of urgency was not removed from the model since its borderline significance level. Rectal compliance was closely associated with the threshold for the sensation of urgency during rectal distention but was not an independent factor for reporting the sensation. The patients with and without urgency showed altered psychologic profiles. CONCLUSIONS: The symptom of urgency is associated with objective alterations in the colonic and rectal reservoir of patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
