INTRODUCTION: Oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP) is often discovered in the ophthalmology department, manifested as ptosis with the same side, eyeball in the fixed external booth, or accompanied by limited inward, upward, and downward movements. The present case report described the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on a breast cancer patient with ONP after chemotherapy. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 56-year-old breast cancer patient presented with severe ptosis and fixed right eye exotropia. Besides, it is challenging to perform the movement inward, upward, and downward, and with obvious diplopia. DIAGNOSES: The breast cancer patient was diagnosed with ONP, chemotherapy history. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was introduced to acupuncture department to receiving EA treatment. OUTCOMES: After 12 times of EA treatments, the symptom of ptosis was significantly improved, and the right upper eyelid can lift autonomously as same as the left eye. Besides, the patient's right lateral eye could move freely, and the symptoms of double vision disappeared. CONCLUSION: The case suggests that EA may be an effective alternative treatment for ONP.

Introduction: Utidelone (UTD1) is a new chemotherapeutic drug for recurrent or metastatic breast cancer. However, it usually leads to severe peripheral neuropathy (PN) and causes numbness of the hands and feet and significant pain in patients' life. Electroacupuncture (EA) is considered beneficial in improving PN and relieving numbness of the hands and feet. This trial aims to evaluate the therapeutic effect of EA on PN caused by UTD1 in patients with advanced breast cancer. Methods and analysis: This study is a prospective randomized controlled trial. A total of 70 patients with PN caused by UTD1 will be randomly assigned to the EA treatment group and the control group in a ratio of 1:1. The patients in the EA treatment group will receive 2 Hz EA three times a week for 4 weeks. The patients in the control group will take mecobalamin (MeCbl) tablets orally, one tablet each, three times a day for 4 weeks. The main outcome measures will be the evaluation scale of peripheral neurotoxicity of chemotherapeutic drugs according to the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-CIPN 20-item (EORTC QLQ-CIPN20) and the peripheral neurotoxicity assessment rating according to NCI CTCAE version 5.0. Secondary outcomes will be the quality of life scale according to the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30). The results will be evaluated at baseline, post-treatment phase, and follow-up. All major analyses will be based on the intention-to-treat principle. Ethics and dissemination: This protocol was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of Zhejiang Cancer Hospital on 26 July 2022. The license number is IRB-2022-425. This study will provide clinical efficacy data on EA in the treatment of PN caused by UTD1 and will help to prove whether EA is an effective and safe therapy. OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) combined with warm acupuncture in treating breast cancer associated with upper limb lymphedema (BCRL). METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study using a paired control design. Fifty-two BCRL patients were assigned to the control group (27 cases) and the treatment group (25 cases). The patients in the control group were treated with lymphedema comprehensive detumescence treatment (CDT) for 4 weeks, including systematic therapy composed of manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandage, skincare, and functional exercise. The patients in the treatment group were treated with TEAS combined with warm acupuncture based on the control group methods. Each treatment lasted for 30 min and was applied twice a week for 4 weeks. The arm circumference (AC) of different positions of the affected limb and the degree of swelling of the affected limb were evaluated before the first treatment and after the last treatment. The clinical efficacy was evaluated according to the degree of edema before and after treatment. All adverse events during treatment were recorded. RESULTS: The patients' AC and the swelling feeling of the affected limb in the treatment group and the control group were both reduced compared with those before treatment. Compared with the control group, AC of the wrist joint transverse stria, the midpoint between the wrist joint transverse stria and the elbow joint transverse stria in the treatment group were significantly reduced (P<0.05). The decrease in AC diameter at the midpoint between the elbow joint transverse stria and the axillary transverse stria was the most significant (P<0.01). The swelling degree of the affected limbs in the treatment group was significantly lower than before treatment, and was significantly lower compared with the control group after treatment (P<0.01). The total effective rate was 72% in the treatment group, significantly higher than that in the control group (55.56%, P<0.05). No serious adverse events occured in either group. CONCLUSIONS: TEAS combined with warm acupuncture can effectively reduce AC and swelling feeling of the affected limb in patients with BCRL. The effect is better than that of CDT therapy alone. Introduction: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common complication in patients with cancer during chemotherapy. It mainly leads to severe numbness of the hands and feet and causes great pain in patients. Electroacupuncture (EA) is considered to be beneficial in improving peripheral neuropathy and relieving numbness of the hands and feet. This trial aims to evaluate the therapeutic effect of different frequencies of EA on CIPN in patients with cancer. Methods and analysis: This study is a randomized controlled trial. In total, 160 eligible CIPN patients are randomly assigned to the 2 Hz EA group, 100 Hz EA group, 2/100 Hz EA group, and control group in the ratio of 1:1:1:1. All patients in the EA treatment groups receive treatment with EA three times a week for 4 weeks and following up for 4 weeks. The patients in the control group are given Mecobalamin (MeCbl) tablets orally, one tablet at a time, three times a day, for 4 weeks, and following up for 4 weeks. The primary outcome measures are the participant neurotoxicity questionnaire (PNQ) and the peripheral neurotoxicity assessment rating (NCI CTCAE V5.0). Secondary outcomes are the quality of life scale (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the measurement of peripheral nerve conduction velocity (NCV). The results are evaluated at baseline, post-treatment phase, and following up for 4 weeks. All major analyses are based on the intention to treat principle. Ethics/dissemination: This protocol was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the Cancer Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Zhejiang Cancer Hospital) on 7 December 2021. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cimicifuga racemose is previously proved effective on nature menopausal syndrome (MPS). However, its clinical value in treating with MPS induced by luteinizing-hormone releasing hormone analogue (LHRH-a) therapy of pre-/peri-menopausal breast cancer patients is still unknown. AIM OF STUDY: This perspective randomised-design study is to investigate the effect and safety of cimicifuga racemosa on MPS induced by LHRH-a in breast cancer (clinical trial registered: NCT03339882). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Breast cancer patients planning for LHRH-a treatment were randomly divided into 2 groups. The control group which was being treated with the standard treatment of LHRH-a. The other group was being treated with Remifemin, the commercialized product of cimicifuga racemose extract, combined with LHRH-a, called Remifemin group. Our main endpoint was Kupperman menopause index (KMI). Hormone levels in peripheral blood and gynecological complications were also evaluated. RESULTS: Totally, 85 patients (42 in Remifemin group and 43 in control group) were enrolled in Zhejiang Cancer Hospital. At the 4th, 8th and 12th week after using LHRH-a, the KMI were all significantly lower in Remifemin group than in control group (Pâ¯<â¯0.01), while the hormone levels, including estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were similar in the two groups. In addition, the incidence of cervical cyst in Remifemin group was higher than that in control group (Pâ¯=â¯0.02), and there was no significant difference in the other gynecological complications, including endometrial thickening, ovarian cyst or uterine fibroid (Pâ¯>â¯0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Cimicifuga racemose is effective, oncological safe and reliable for treatment of MPS caused by LHRH-a in breast cancer.

As targeted drug therapy is increasingly applied in the treatment of colon cancer, understanding and managing the adverse reactions of patients is becoming increasingly important. The present review examines the mechanisms of and adverse reactions to the most commonly used targeted drugs for colon cancer, and discusses methods of coping with these adverse reactions. Approved targeted drugs for metastatic colon cancer include monoclonal antibodies targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), including bevacizumab, ziv-aflibercept and regorafenib, and monoclonal antibodies targeting epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR), including cetuximab and panitumumab. The present review assesses the major adverse effects of these drugs and methods of dealing with reactions to them. VEGF inhibitors primarily result in cardiovascular and kidney problems. Meanwhile, EGFR receptor inhibitors are frequently reported to cause rashes, diarrhea and hypertension, and are reviewed from the point of view of resulting electrolyte disturbances.

It has been hypothesized that single nucleotide polymorphisms in CYP19A1 gene may alter aromatase activity and circulating steroid hormone levels in females. Therefore, it is biologically reasonable that CYP19A1 rs1008805 (A/G) polymorphism may be associated with the clinical outcome of hormone therapy. Genotyping for the CYP19A1 rs1008805 polymorphism was performed for 287 females with hormone receptor (HR)-positive early breast cancer, and potential associations were evaluated between CYP19A1 rs1008805 genotypes and disease-free survival (DFS). Based on the analysis of the whole cohort, no significant differences were observed between rs1008805 genotypes and DFS. However, in postmenopausal females, rs1008805 variants were significantly associated with DFS (AA vs. AG vs. GG, 89.2 vs. 58.2 vs. 32.7 months; P=0.019). In addition, when the population was divided into two cohorts, females with the GG variant exhibited a significantly poorer DFS [GG vs. AA or AG, 32.7 vs. 70.6 months; hazard ratio (HR), 3.613; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.380-9.457; P=0.005]. Furthermore, when adjusted for other patient features in multivariate analyses, GG genotype remained an independent prognostic marker for DFS (HR, 3.439; 95% CI, 1.251-9.456; P=0.017). However, there were no significant differences in DFS between patients harboring the minor allele and those with the homozygous common allele (AG or GG vs. AA, 52.4 vs. 89.2 months; HR, 1.288; 95% CI, 0.705-2.353; P=0.408). There were also no associations between rs1008805 polymorphism and DFS for premenopausal females. In conclusion, the homozygous minor allele (GG) of CYP19A1 rs1008805 was identified to be significantly associated with an inferior clinical outcome of hormone therapy in postmenopausal hormone receptor-positive patients with early breast cancer. If confirmed by further study, genotyping for CYP19A1 rs1008805 polymorphism may provide predictive information to improve the selection of endocrine treatment.

This study investigated the effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) on the risk of developing non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A total of 500 NSCLC patients and 500 healthy controls were recruited for genotyping of 11 SNPs of LRP5. The association between genotype and NSCLC risk was evaluated by computing the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) from multivariate unconditional logistic regression analyses. Eleven Tag SNPs were detected. The frequency of the LRP5 rs3736228 T allele (18.9% in male NSCLC cases and 23.9% in male controls) was statistically different between male NSCLCs and male controls (P=0.03), and the T allele was associated with a lower risk of NSCLC (OR=0.74; 95% CI, 0.56-0.67), whereas the C/C homozygous genotype and the LRP5 rs64843 T/T genotype were associated with an increased risk of NSCLC and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), respectively (OR=1.43 and 1.77, respectively). Using Haploview software, the frequency of the haplotypes of rs312009/rs3120015/rs3120014 CCC was was significantly higher in female SCC cases compared with female controls (0.064 vs. 0.009, P=0.04). LRP5 rs3736228 and rs64843 SNPs were significantly associated with an increased risk of NSCLC and SCC, respectively. Further studies are required to investigate the functional changes in LRP5 expression and activity in NSCLC in vitro.

Aims. This study aimed to investigate CHRNA3 (rs8040868) and PHACTR2 (rs9390123) single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for association with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) risk in a Chinese population, and whether the environment affects the genetic polymorphisms. Methods. This case and control study included 500 NSCLC patients and 500 age-matched healthy controls. CHRNA3 (rs8040868) and PHACTR2 (rs9390123) SNPs were genotyped and associated for NSCLC risk by computing the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval from multivariate unconditional logistic regression analyses with adjustment of age. Results. The minor allele frequency (MAF) of CHRNA3 (rs8040868) and PHACTR2 (rs9390123) was 0.350 (C) and 0.397 (C), respectively. The frequencies of genotype and allele in CHRNA3 (rs8040868) and PHACTR2 (rs9390123) were not significantly different between the cases and controls, or between either of the subgroups. Conclusion. Although rs8040868 and rs9390123 SNPs are not associated with NSCLC risk in Chinese population, the results strongly suggest that geographical agents interact with human genetic polymorphism independent of ethnic background.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is an important therapeutic target in lung cancer. Gefitinib and erlotinib, two reversible EGFR receptor tyrosine kinases inhibitors (TKIs), have been approved for the treatment of patients with metastatic non small-cell lung cancer. Icotinib, which is a selective EGFR-TKI, provides a similar efficacy to gefitinib. The present study aimed to investigate the survival and safety of icotinib in patients with lung adenocarcinoma with a poor performance status (PS). A total of 42 cases of lung adenocarcinoma, including 35 females and 7 males, were enrolled. Icotinib was used as the first-line of treatment due to poor PS of the patient or a more advanced age. Icotinib (125 mg) was orally administered three times per day. The overall response rate and disease control rates were 33.3 and 85.7%, respectively. The median survival time was 13.0 months (95% CI, 5.6-20.4), The median progression-free survival time was 7.0 months, and the 1-year survival rate was 71.4%. A total of 79% of patients had an improved PS following icotinib treatment. Grade 1 to 2 rashes and diarrhea were the most frequent side effects. One patient succumbed during the study due to interstitial pneumonia. In conclusion, this is the first study indicating that patients with lung adenocarcinoma and poor PS may benefit from first-line icotinib therapy, but should be cautious of the occurrence of interstitial lung disease.

OBJECTIVES: Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6) modulates Wnt signaling transduction. Altered LRP6 expression leads to abnormal Wnt protein activation, cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. This study investigated the association between LRP6 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 500 NSCLC patients and 500 healthy controls were recruited for assessment of four LRP6 SNPs using the SEQUENOM MassARRAY matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry. The association between genotype and NSCLC risk was evaluated by computing the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) with multivariate unconditional logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: The frequency of the LRP6 rs10845498 genotype was 60.9% (A/A), 35.5% (AG) and 3.6% (GG) in patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and 69.2% (A/A), 27.2% (A/G) and 3.6% (GG) in controls. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the LRP6 rs10845498 A/A major allele was associated with a reduced risk in developing lung SCC (OR = 0.69; 95% CI, 0.48-1.00; P=0.04), and tobacco smokers had a 2.21 fold greater risk in developing SCC than nonsmokers (p<0.01, 95% CI, 1.72-2.85), and tobacco smokers who carried an "A" allele (AA+AG) in rs6488507 had a 2.34-fold greater risk in developing NSCLC than other patients (p< 0.01, 95%CI, 1.74-3.13). CONCLUSIONS: The LRP6 rs10845498 SNP is associated with a reduced risk of lung SCC, while tobacco smoke increases the risk. LRP6 rs6488507 polymorphism synergistically increased the risk of NSCLC in tobacco smokers. Further studies are needed to elucidate the functional impact of LRP6 expression and activity in NSCLC.

BACKGROUND: Recently, polymorphisms in COMT (catechol-O-methyltransferase), PLCH1 (phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C eta 1), and CYP17A1 (cytochrome P450 17A1) were found to be associated with the development of lung cancer in a non-Chinese population. AIMS: To explore the potential association between single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in COMT, PLCH1, CYP17A1, and non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) susceptibility in Chinese patients who were nonsmokers. METHODS: A case-controlled study was conducted in 200 patients with NSCLC and 200 healthy controls who were age and sex matched. SNPs rs4680, rs181696, and rs743572 from the COMT, PLCH1, and CYP17A1 genes, respectively, were selected for genotyping. The association between genotype and lung cancer risk was evaluated by computing the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval from multivariate unconditional logistic regression analyses with adjustment for sex and age. RESULTS: The frequency of the G genotype in COMT rs4680 was statistically different between patients with NSCLC and controls (P = .04), and between patients with adenocarcinomas (ADC) and controls (P = .02). The frequency of the A genotype in PLCH1 rs181696 occurred more frequently in squamous cell carcinomas (SQC) than in controls (P = .02). The G/G homozygous genotype in COMT rs4680 and A/A homozygous genotype in PLCH1 rs181696 were associated with ADC and SQC, respectively (odds ratio [OR] 0.61 and OR 2.01, respectively). CONCLUSION: In this study, we found that the COMT rs4680 SNP was significantly associated with a reduced risk of NSCLC, especially ADC, which suggests that this SNP may have a protective effect. Moreover, the PLCH1 rs181696 SNP was strongly associated with an increased risk of SQC, which suggests that this SNP may be a risk factor for developing SQC.

Recently, two genome-wide association studies in Asia identified gene polymorphisms known as rs4488809, rs9816619 in TP63 and rs2131877, rs952481 in C3orf21. It has been proposed that these polymorphisms are susceptibility loci for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) development among Japanese and Korean populations. We ask whether susceptibility to NSCLC is limited to the Chinese population or whether the environment also affects genetic polymorphisms. We conducted a matched case-control study to explore this question. Results show that polymorphism of TP63 was not associated with NSCLC development, whereas variant genotypes of C3orf21 were nominally associated with a reduced risk of lung adenocarcinoma (OR=0.619, 95% CI=0.390-0.976). These results strongly suggest that environmental agents interact with human genetic polymorphism independent of ethnic background. In addition, the C3orf21 gene may be a potential susceptibility marker for lung adenocarcinoma independent of ethnic background and environmental agents.

Studies have shown that immune cells play a key role in lung cancer development. Five SNPs (rs1494555, rs7737000, rs20541, rs1057972 and rs2857261) are associated with lung cancer risk among Caucasians and/or African-Americans, but the polymorphisms may be implicated in different susceptibilities for lung cancer across different populations because of underlying genetic heterogeneity. We therefore conducted a study to examine this relationship in non-smoking Chinese. As a result , no significant associations were observed between SNPs and NSCLCs, whetehr of squamous cell or adenocarcinoma type. Results indicated polymorphisms of IL-7R, IL-13 and IL-15 are not major contributors to NSCLC susceptibility, although we can not rule out synergistic effects with cigarette smoke in NSCLC development in smoking Chinese.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical therapeutic effects of Dishen Qufeng Decoction (DSQFD), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine, in treatment of allergic rhinitis. METHODS: Sixty cases of allergic rhinitis were selected and randomized into DSQFD group (30 cases) and cetirizine group (30 cases), and the patients were orally administered DSQFD and cetirizine respectively. The integrals of patients' symptoms, such as sneezing, nose running, nasal occlusion and nasal itching, signs in the nasal conchae and peripheral blood eosinophil (EOS) count were abserved count before and after treatment. RESULTS: DSQFD obviously improved the symptoms and signs of allergic rhinitis. The total response rate of DSQFD treatment was 83.3%, while that of the cetirizine treatment was 86.7%; the EOS counts in both groups were significantly decreased. These results showed statistical difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION: DSQFD is an effective preparation of traditional Chinese medicine for treating allergic rhinitis.
