BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is widely recognized as a cause of acute respiratory failure in infants and immunocompromised patients. However, RSV can also contribute to acute respiratory failure in adults, particularly among the elderly population. The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics and outcomes of immunocompetent adults hospitalized for RSV infection. METHODS: This retrospective study included all immunocompetent adult patients consecutively admitted to a tertiary care hospital with RSV-related acute respiratory failure over a seven-year period (2016 - 2023). Diagnosis of RSV infection was made through nasal swabs or pulmonary samples, with multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Patients were eligible for inclusion if they required supplemental oxygen therapy for at least 48hours. RESULTS: One hundred and four patients met the inclusion criteria. Median age [IQR] was 77 years [67 - 85]. Ninety-seven patients had at least one comorbidity (97/104, 93%). At the time of RSV diagnosis, 67 patients (67/104, 64%) experienced acute decompensation of a pre-existing chronic comorbidity. Antibiotics were started in 80% (77/104) of patients; however, only 16 patients had a confirmed diagnosis of bacterial superinfection. Twenty-six patients needed ventilatory support (26/104, 25%) and 21 were admitted to the intensive care unit (21/104, 20%). The median duration of oxygen therapy [IQR] was 6 days [3 - 9], while the median hospital length of stay [IQR] was 11 days [6 - 15]. The overall mortality rate within one month of hospital admission was 13% (14/104). The sole variables associated with one-month mortality were age and maximum oxygen flow during hospitalisation. CONCLUSION: RSV-associated acute respiratory failure affected elderly individuals with multiple comorbidities and was associated with prolonged hospitalization and a high mortality rate.

BACKGROUND: Few data are available on the real-world efficacy of receiving tenofovir-lamivudine-dolutegravir (DTG) as HIV treatment, particularly among young people in West Africa. Here, we evaluated pharmaco-virological outcomes and resistance profiles among Togolese children and adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Lomé, Togo, enrolling antiretroviral-treated people with HIV aged from 18 months to 24 years. Plasma HIV-1 viral load and antiretroviral concentrations were measured. Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) of protease, Reverse Transcriptase (RT) and integrase was performed on all samples with viral load >200 c/mL. Drug resistance mutations (DRMs) were identified and interpreted using the ANRS-MIE algorithm. RESULTS: 264 participants were enrolled (median age=17 years), 226 received a DTG-based regimen for a median of 20.5 months. Among them, virological suppression at the 200 c/mL threshold in 80.0% of the participants. Plasma DTG concentrations were adequate (i.e., >640 ng/mL), suboptimal and below the limit of quantification in 74.1%, 6.7% and 19.2% of participants receiving DTG, respectively. Overall, viruses resistant to any of Nucleoside RT Inhibitors, Non-NRTIs, and protease inhibitors were found in 52%, 66% and 1.6% of participants, respectively. A major integrase inhibitor DRM was observed in 9.4% (n=3/32, R263K, E138A-G140A-Q148R, and N155H) of participants with a viral load >200 c/mL. CONCLUSIONS: These first findings in such a large series of adolescents in a low-income country, showed a good virological response of 80% and the presence of an integrase DRM in 9.4% of the virological failures, supporting the need to monitor DTG drug resistance to reduce the risk of resistance acquisition.

We evaluated Ibalizumab (IBA)-containing standardized optimized salvage regimen (with or without a 4-week foscarnet induction) in individuals harboring multidrug-resistant human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2). Nine were included; 2 achieved virological suppression after foscarnet induction with a sustained suppression at Week 24 after IBA initiation, and an additional individual at Week 24 after Ibalizumab initiation.

BACKGROUND: Advances in high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies and reductions in sequencing costs have revolutionised the study of genomics and molecular biology by making whole-genome sequencing (WGS) accessible to many laboratories. However, the analysis of WGS data requires significant computational effort, which is the major drawback in implementing WGS as a routine laboratory technique. OBJECTIVE: Automated pipelines have been developed to overcome this issue, but they do not exist for all organisms. This is the case for human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised adults. RESULTS: We present RSV-GenoScan, a fast and easy-to-use pipeline for WGS analysis of RSV generated by HTS on Illumina or Nanopore platforms. RSV-GenoScan automates the WGS analysis steps directly from the raw sequence data. The pipeline filters the sequence data, maps the reads to the RSV reference genomes, generates a consensus sequence, identifies the RSV subgroup, and lists amino acid mutations, insertions and deletions in the F and G viral genes. This enables the rapid identification of mutations in these coding genes that are known to confer resistance to monoclonal antibodies. BACKGROUND: During the first COVID-19 pandemic wave, COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) has been reported in up to 11-28% of critically ill COVID-19 patients and associated with increased mortality. As new SARS-CoV-2 variants emerged, the characteristics of critically ill COVID-19 patients have evolved, particularly in the era of Omicron. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of CAPA in the era of new variants. METHODS: This is a prospective multicenter observational cohort study conducted in France in 36 participating intensive care units (ICU), between December 7th, 2021 and April 26th 2023. Diagnosis criteria of CAPA relied on European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM)/International Society for Human & Animal Mycology (ISHAM) consensus criteria. RESULTS: 566 patients were included over the study period. The prevalence of CAPA was 5.1% [95% CI 3.4-7.3], and rose to 9.1% among patients who required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). Univariable analysis showed that CAPA patients were more frequently immunosuppressed and required more frequently IMV support, vasopressors and renal replacement therapy during ICU stay than non-CAPA patients. SAPS II score at ICU admission, immunosuppression, and a SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant were independently associated with CAPA in multivariable logistic regression analysis. Although CAPA was not significantly associated with day-28 mortality, patients with CAPA experienced a longer duration of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay. CONCLUSION: This study contributes valuable insights into the prevalence, characteristics, and outcomes of CAPA in the era of Delta and Omicron variants. We report a lower prevalence of CAPA (5.1%) among critically-ill COVID-19 patients than previously reported, mainly affecting intubated-patients. Duration of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay were significantly longer in CAPA patients.

OBJECTIVES: Integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) have been recently recommended as the preferred first-line option for antiretroviral treatment initiators in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in response to the growing circulation of resistant HIV to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). In this study, we estimated the frequency of pretreatment drug resistance (PDR) to INSTIs in West Africa and Southeast Asia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using samples collected from 2015 to 2016, and previously used to assessed PI, NRTI and NNRTI resistance, we generated HIV integrase sequences and identified relevant INSTI PDR mutations using the Stanford and ANRS algorithms. RESULTS: We generated 353 integrase sequences. INSTI PDR frequency was low, 1.1% (4/353) overall, ranging from 0% to 6.3% according to country. However, frequency of PDR to any drug class was very high, 17.9% (95% CI: 13.9%-22.3%), and mostly associated with a high level of NNRTI PDR, 9.7%, and a moderate level of NRTI PDR, 5.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Our results support the recent introduction of INSTIs in LMICs to improve treatment outcome in these settings, but also stress the need for effective actions to prevent uncontrolled emergence of drug resistance to this drug class.

Numerous SARS-CoV-2 variants are emerging as the epidemic continues, inducing new waves of contamination. In July 2023, a new variant named BA.2.86 was identified, raising concerns about its potential for viral escape, even in an immune population. The reduction in patient-centered testing and the identification of variants by sequencing means that we are now blind to the spread of this new variant. The aim of this study was to track the signature of this variant in wastewater in Paris, France. This variant showed a very rapid spread, highly correlated with national flash studies involving sequencing of clinical samples, but with a moderate impact on virus circulation. This easy-to-implement approach enabled us to monitor the emergence and spread of this new variant in real time at low cost.

BACKGROUND: A severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection lasts longer in immunocompromised hosts than in immunocompetent patients. Prolonged infection is associated with a higher probability of selection for novel SARS-CoV-2 mutations, particularly in the spike protein, a critical target for vaccines and therapeutics. METHODS: From December 2020 to September 2022, respiratory samples from 444 immunocompromised patients and 234 health care workers positive for SARS-CoV-2, diagnosed at 2 hospitals in Paris, France, were analyzed using whole-genome sequencing using Nanopore technology. Custom scripts were developed to assess the SARS-CoV-2 genetic diversity between the 2 groups and within the host. RESULTS: Most infections were SARS-CoV-2 Delta or Omicron lineages. Viral genetic diversity was significantly higher in infections of immunocompromised patients than those of controls. Minor mutations were identified in viruses sequenced from immunocompromised individuals, which became signature mutations for newer SARS-CoV-2 variants as the epidemic progressed. Two patients were coinfected with Delta and Omicron variants. The follow-up of immunocompromised patients revealed that the SARS-CoV-2 genome evolution differed in the upper and lower respiratory tracts. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that SARS-CoV-2 infection in immunocompromised patients is associated with higher genetic diversity, which could lead to the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants with possible immune evasion or different virulence characteristics.

The presence of free severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) nucleocapsid-antigen in sera (N-antigenemia) has been shown in COVID-19 patients. However, the link between the quantitative levels of N-antigenemia and COVID-19 disease severity is not entirely understood. To assess the dynamics and clinical association of N-antigen sera levels with disease severity in COVID-19 patients, we analyzed data from patients included in the French COVID cohort, with at least one sera sample between January and September 2020. We assessed N-antigenemia levels and anti-N IgG titers, and patient outcomes was classified in two groups, survival or death. In samples collected within 8 days since symptom onset, we observed that deceased patients had a higher positivity rate (93% vs. 81%; p < 0.001) and higher median levels of predicted N-antigenemia (2500 vs. 1200 pg/mL; p < 0.001) than surviving patients. Predicted time to N-antigen clearance in sera was prolonged in deceased patients compared to survivors (23.3 vs 19.3 days; p < 0.0001). In a subset of patients with both sera and nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs, predicted time to N-antigen clearance in sera was prolonged in deceased patients (p < 0.001), whereas NP viral load clearance did not differ between the groups (p = 0.07). Our results demonstrate a strong relationship between N-antigenemia levels and COVID-19 severity on a prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Hypermutated viruses induced by APOBEC3 (apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing, enzyme-catalytic, polypeptide-like 3) proteins comprise some of the defective viruses in the HIV reservoir. Here, we assessed the proportion of APOBEC3-induced defective proviruses in HIV-positive patients before and after receiving dolutegravir + lamivudine dual therapy. METHODS: PBMCs of virologically suppressed patients enrolled in the ANRS 167 LAMIDOL trial, evaluating a switch from triple therapy to dolutegravir + lamivudine, were collected 8 weeks before (W-8) and 48 weeks after (W48) dual-therapy initiation. The Vif and RT regions were subject to next-generation sequencing. Bioinformatic algorithms were developed to identify APOBEC3-defective sequences and APOBEC3-related drug resistance mutations (APOMuts). All hypermutated sequences and those containing at least one stop codon were considered as defective. RESULTS: One hundred and four patients were enrolled (median virological suppression duration: 4.2 years; IQR: 2.0-9.1). Proviral defective reads at W-8 and W48 were detected in Vif in 22% and 29% of patients, respectively, and in RT in 38% and 42% of patients, respectively. At least one APOMut was present in proviruses of 27% and 38% of patients at W-8 and W48, respectively. The ratio of APOMuts/number of potential APOMut sites was significantly higher at W48 (16.5%) than at W-8 (9.8%, P = 0.007). The presence of APOBEC3-defective viruses at W-8 was not associated with HIV total DNA level, nor with the third drug class received prior to switching to dolutegravir + lamivudine, nor with the duration of virological suppression. CONCLUSIONS: Whereas no significant change in the proportion of patients with APOBEC3-defective proviruses was evidenced after 1 year of dolutegravir + lamivudine maintenance, enrichment in APOMuts was observed. Further longer-term studies are needed to assess the other forms of defective viruses with dual-therapy.

• Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) drug resistance has implications for antiretroviral treatment strategies and for containing the HIV pandemic because the development of HIV drug resistance leads to the requirement for antiretroviral drugs that may be less effective, less well-tolerated, and more expensive than those used in first-line regimens. • HIV drug resistance studies are designed to determine which HIV mutations are selected by antiretroviral drugs and, in turn, how these mutations affect antiretroviral drug susceptibility and response to future antiretroviral treatment regimens. • Such studies collectively form a vital knowledge base essential for monitoring global HIV drug resistance trends, interpreting HIV genotypic tests, and updating HIV treatment guidelines. • Although HIV drug resistance data are collected in many studies, such data are often not publicly shared, prompting the need to recommend best practices to encourage and standardize HIV drug resistance data sharing. • In contrast to other viruses, sharing HIV sequences from phylogenetic studies of transmission dynamics requires additional precautions as HIV transmission is criminalized in many countries and regions. • Our recommendations are designed to ensure that the data that contribute to HIV drug resistance knowledge will be available without undue hardship to those publishing HIV drug resistance studies and without risk to people living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Despite current broad natural and vaccine-induced protection, a substantial number of patients infected with emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants (e.g., BF.7 and BQ.1.1) still experience severe COVID-19. Real-life studies investigating the impact of these variants on clinical outcomes of severe cases are currently not available. We performed a prospective multicenter observational cohort study. Adult patients with acute respiratory failure admitted between December 7, 2021 and December 15, 2022, in one of the 20 participating intensive care units (17 from the Greater Paris area and 3 from the North of France) were eligible for inclusion if they had SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by a positive reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Full-length SARS-CoV-2 genomes from all included patients were sequenced by means of next-generation sequencing. The primary endpoint of the study was day-28 mortality. RESULTS: The study included 158 patients infected with three groups of Omicron sublineages, including (i) BA.2 variants and their early sublineages referred as "BA.2" (n = 50), (ii) early BA.4 and BA.5 sublineages (including BA.5.1 and BA.5.2, n = 61) referred as "BA.4/BA.5", and (iii) recent emerging BA.5 sublineages (including BQ.1, BQ.1.1, BF.7, BE.1 and CE.1, n = 47) referred as "BQ.1.1". The clinical phenotype of BQ1.1-infected patients compared to earlier BA.2 and BA.4/BA.5 sublineages, showed more frequent obesity and less frequent immunosuppression. There was no significant difference between Omicron sublineage groups regarding the severity of the disease at ICU admission, need for organ failure support during ICU stay, nor day 28 mortality (21.7%, n = 10/47 in BQ.1.1 group vs 26.7%, n = 16/61 in BA.4/BA.5 vs 22.0%, n = 11/50 in BA.2, p = 0.791). No significant relationship was found between any SARS-CoV-2 substitution and/or deletion on the one hand and survival on the other hand over hospital follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Critically-ill patients with Omicron BQ.1.1 infection showed a different clinical phenotype than other patients infected with earlier Omicron sublineage but no day-28 mortality difference.

The physiopathological mechanisms responsible for digestive symptoms in COVID-19 patients are still unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of faecal viral shedding on digestive symptoms and propose differential diagnoses in order to understand the gastrointestinal clinical spectrum in acute cases of COVID-19. All patients managed between March and May 2020, from whom stool samples were collected for microbiological investigations, were included. Microbiological analysis consisted of syndromic PCR screening and microscopic parasitological examination supplemented with microsporidia and multiplex protozoa PCR. SARS-CoV-2 infection was diagnosed via viral detection in respiratory and frozen stool samples, completed via serological test when necessary. Epidemiological, clinical, radiological, and biological data and clinical courses were compared according to COVID-19 status and faecal SARS-CoV-2 shedding and enteric co-infection status. The sample included 50 COVID+ and 67 COVID- patients. Faecal viral shedding was detected in 50% of stool samples and was associated with a higher viral load in the upper respiratory tract. Detected enteric pathogens were not different between subjects with different COVID-19 statuses or faecal SARS-CoV-2 shedding and had no impact on the clinical course for COVID-19 patients. The connection between SARS-CoV-2 shedding and enteric pathogen co-infection involvement in gastrointestinal presentation and clinical course is still unclear, suggesting other processes are involved in digestive disorders in COVID-19 patients.

In May 2022, several countries reported mpox cases from patients without history of traveling to endemic areas. France was one of the most affected European countries by this outbreak. In this study, the clinical characteristics of mpox cases in France were described, and the genetic diversity of the virus was studied. Patients diagnosed with mpox infection (quantitative polymerase chain reaction ct < 28) between May 21, and July 4, 2022 and between 16th August and 10th September 2022 were included to this study. Twelve amplicons corresponding to the most polymorphic regions of the mpox genome and covering ~30 000 nucleotides were generated and sequenced using the S5 XL Ion Torrent technology to evaluate the genetic diversity of mpox sequences. One hundred and forty-eight patients were diagnosed with mpox-infection. 95% were men, 5% transgender (M-to-F), 50% were taking human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis, and 25% were HIV seropositive. One hundred and sixty-two samples (some patients had two samples) were sequenced and compared to GenBank sequences. Overall, low genetic diversity of mpox sequences was found compared with pre-epidemic Western-African sequences, with 32 distinct mutational patterns. This study provides a first glance at the mutational landscape of early mpox 2022 circulating strains in Paris (France).

Although France was one of the most affected European countries by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the dynamics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) movement within France, but also involving France in Europe and in the world, remain only partially characterized in this timeframe. Here, we analyzed GISAID deposited sequences from January 1 to December 31, 2020 (n = 638,706 sequences at the time of writing). To tackle the challenging number of sequences without the bias of analyzing a single subsample of sequences, we produced 100 subsamples of sequences and related phylogenetic trees from the whole dataset for different geographic scales (worldwide, European countries, and French administrative regions) and time periods (from January 1 to July 25, 2020, and from July 26 to December 31, 2020). We applied a maximum likelihood discrete trait phylogeographic method to date exchange events (i.e., a transition from one location to another one), to estimate the geographic spread of SARS-CoV-2 transmissions and lineages into, from and within France, Europe, and the world. The results unraveled two different patterns of exchange events between the first and second half of 2020. Throughout the year, Europe was systematically associated with most of the intercontinental exchanges. SARS-CoV-2 was mainly introduced into France from North America and Europe (mostly by Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Germany) during the first European epidemic wave. During the second wave, exchange events were limited to neighboring countries without strong intercontinental movement, but Russia widely exported the virus into Europe during the summer of 2020. France mostly exported B.1 and B.1.160 lineages, respectively, during the first and second European epidemic waves. At the level of French administrative regions, the Paris area was the main exporter during the first wave. But, for the second epidemic wave, it equally contributed to virus spread with Lyon area, the second most populated urban area after Paris in France. The main circulating lineages were similarly distributed among the French regions. To conclude, by enabling the inclusion of tens of thousands of viral sequences, this original phylodynamic method enabled us to robustly describe SARS-CoV-2 geographic spread through France, Europe, and worldwide in 2020.

BACKGROUND: This work aims to evaluate integrase resistance and its predictors in HIV-1 infected combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) experienced individuals failing a dolutegravir-based regimen. METHODS: Major resistance mutations (MRM) and genotypic susceptibility score (GSS) of dolutegravir companion drugs were evaluated on plasma genotypic resistance test (GRT) performed at dolutegravir failure. Logistic regression was used to evaluate factors associated to the risk of integrase strand-transfer inhibitors (INSTI)-resistance at dolutegravir failure. RESULTS: We retrospectively analysed 467 individuals. At failure GRT, individuals had been under dolutegravir for a median (IQR) time of 11 (5-20) months; around half of them had never been exposed to INSTI (52%) and 10.7% were at first-line regimen. Fifty-eight (12.4%) individuals showed ≥1 INSTI MRM. Among them, people INSTI-exposed showed significantly higher prevalence of INSTI resistance compared to those who were INSTI naïve [46 (21.2%) versus 9 (3.9%), P < 0.001].N155H was the most prevalent MRM (5.4%), followed by G140S (4.5%) and Q148H (4.3%). These MRM were more probably present in INSTI-experienced individuals compared to those INSTI naïve. Despite failure, 89.5% of individuals harboured viral strains fully susceptible to dolutegravir and bictegravir and 85.0% to all INSTI. No INSTI exposure before receiving dolutegravir [OR: 0.35 (0.16-0.78), P < 0.010] and a GSS for companion drugs ≥2 (OR: 0.09 [0.04-0.23], P < 0.001) were negatively associated with INSTI resistance at failure. CONCLUSIONS: In a large set of individuals failing dolutegravir in real-life, INSTI resistance was low and mainly related to previous first-generation INSTI exposure. Surveillance of integrase resistance remains crucial to preserve efficacy of INSTI class in the future.

BACKGROUND: There is almost no data on the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 among street adolescents. We conducted a study to document the immunization status of street adolescents in Togo against different variants of SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 2021 in Lomé, the city with the highest number of COVID 19 cases in Togo (60%). Adolescents aged 13- and 19 years old living on the street were eligible for inclusion. A standardized questionnaire was administered face-to-face to adolescents. A sample of blood was taken and aliquots of plasma were transported to the virology laboratory of the Hôpital Bichat-Claude Bernard (Paris, France). SARS-CoV-2 anti-S and anti-N IgG were measured using chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. A quantitative miniaturized and parallel-arranged ELISA assay was used to detect IgG antibodies specifically directed against the different SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern (VOC). RESULTS: A total of 299 street adolescents (5.2% female), median age 15 years, interquartile range (14-17 years), were included in this study. The prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection was 63.5% (95%CI: 57.8-69.0). Specific-IgG against the ancestral Wuhan strain was developed by 92.0% of subjects. The proportion of patients being immunized against each VOC was 86.8%, 51.1%, 56.3%, 60.0, and 30.5% for the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron VOCs, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study showed a very high prevalence with approximately 2/3 of Togolese street adolescents having antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 due to a previous infection. These results confirm an under-reporting of COVID-19 cases in Togo, questioning the hypothesis of low virus circulation in Togo and even in Africa.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to confirm the co-infection with HIV-1 and HIV-2, among West African patients using in-house HIV type/group enzyme-immuno assays and molecular diagnosis. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from April 2016 to October 2017 in the biggest HIV clinics of Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. METHOD: A first serological confirmation was done in the referral laboratory using an in-house, indirect immuno-enzymatic essay allowing the qualitative detection of both HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies. In order to separately detect anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2 antibodies, a type/group specific enzyme-immuno assay (HIV-GSEIA) was used. To confirm the co-infections, HIV-1 and HIV-2 DNA-qualitative PCR assays were performed. RESULTS: A total of 91 patients were enrolled in the study and provided blood sample for HIV type confirmatory testing including 13 (14.3%) HIV-2 mono-reactive and 78 (85.7%) HIV-1/HIV-2 dually-reactive based on the HIV testing National Algorithms. The first serological ELISA confirmatory test performed showed that 80 (78.9%) of the 91 participants were dually-reactive. The HIV-GSEIA performed on these 80 serum samples retrieve one 61 HIV-1/HIV-2 dually-reactive samples. HIV-1 and HIV-2 DNA PCR were performed on 54 of the 61 HIV-1/HIV-2 dually-reactive samples and 46 out of 61 (75.4%) samples were found HIV-1/HIV-2 coinfected. CONCLUSION: The contribution of type/group specific enzyme-immuno assay to accurately identify HIV-1/HIV-2 coinfections remain suboptimal, emphasizing the need for molecular diagnosis platforms in West Africa, to avail HIV DNA PCR test for the confirmation of HIV-1/HIV-2 co-infections.
