RESUMO

No study has been reported to use machine learning methods to predict the full-range test curves of circular CFST columns. In this paper, the long short-term memory (LSTM) network was introduced to calculate the axially compressive load-strain curves of the circular CFST columns according to an experiment database of limited scale. To improve the feasibility of input data for the recurrent neural network algorithm, data preprocessing methods and data configurations were discussed. The prediction results indicate that the LSTM network provides more accurate estimations compared with the artificial neural networks, random forest and support vector regression. Meanwhile, this method can be used to calculate the mechanical properties including the elastic modulus, ultimate bearing capacity, and the ductility of the columns with acceptable accuracy for engineering practice (the prediction error within 20%). For future research, it is expected that the machine learning method will be applied to predict the structural response of different members under various loading conditions.

The outer steel tube in a concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column confines the core concrete and improves the compressive strength of the core concrete. When there is a notch damage in the tube, the confinement effect may be affected. The confinement effects of the notched steel tube in rectangular CFST columns were systematically investigated by using numerical approaches. Refined three-dimensional finite element models with advanced concrete constitutive relations were established. With the verified finite element modeling method, full-sized square CFST columns with horizontal, vertical, or diagonal notches at different locations of the steel tube were simulated. Stress distributions and deformation modes of the steel tube and core concrete were analyzed. Columns with a horizontal notch at the plate center location displayed a higher axial strength reduction than those with vertical notches. A parametric study was performed to investigate the influences of concrete strengths, steel strengths, steel ratios, notch length to column width ratios, and notch angles on the compressive strengths of the rectangular CFST columns. A practical design formula was proposed based on the obtained results. The proposed formula could effectively predict the influences of different notches on the confinement effect in the notched CFST columns.

With the development of new concrete technology, high-strength concrete has been used worldwide. In particular, more economic benefits can be achieved by applying high-strength concrete-filled steel tube (HSCFST) columns in the concrete core walls of super high-rise buildings. A constitutive relation with high applicability for high-strength materials with different strength grades is proposed. Based on this constitutive model, a brick element model of 181 sets of axially compressed square HSCFST members is established and experimentally verified. The effects of the concrete strength, diameter-to-thickness ratio, and steel yield strength on the axial compressive capacities of these members were investigated based on finite element calculation results. The results showed that with an increase in the concrete strength, the ultimate bearing capacities of CS-CC, HS-HC, HS-CC, and CS-HC stub column members increased by 60%, 24%, 44%, and 21% at most, respectively. Additionally, as the steel yield strength increased, the ultimate bearing capacities of CS-CC, HS-HC, HS-CC, and CS-HC stub column members increased by 8.8%, 5.1%, 8.5%, and 5.2%, respectively, Hence, material strength has the greatest impact on CS-CC and HS-CC. The confinement effect of the square steel tube on the concrete weakens as the strength grade of steel or concrete increases. Notably, the confinement effect of steel tube on the concrete is strongest in CS-CC and weakest in the CS-HC. In addition, the confinement coefficients of square HSCFST stub columns with different combinations of concrete and steel strengths were analyzed. Based on the superposition principle in the ultimate state, a practical axial compressive capacity calculation formula for three types of square HSCFSTs is established. Compared with existing major design code formulas, the proposed formula is more accurate and concise and has a clear physical meaning.

The objective of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties and the composite action of circular concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns subjected to compression-torsion load using finite element model analysis. Load-strain (T-γ) curves, normal stress, shear stress, and the composite action between the steel tubes and the interior concrete were analyzed based on the verified 3D finite element models. The results indicate that with the increase of axial force, the maximum shear stress at the core concrete increased significantly, and the maximum shear stress of the steel tubes gradually decreased. Meanwhile, the torsional bearing capacity of the column increased at first and then decreased. The torque share in the columns changed from the tube-sharing domain to the concrete-sharing domain, while the axial force of the steel tube remained unchanged. Practical design equations for the torsional capacity of axially loaded circular CFST columns were proposed based on the parametric analysis. The accuracy and validity of the proposed equations were verified against the collected experimental results.

The objective of this study was to investigate the composite behavior of rectangular concrete-filled cold-formed steel (CFS) tubular stub columns under axial compression. A fine finite 3D solid element model of rectangular concrete-filled cold-formed steel tubular stub column was established by ABAQUS, which utilized a constitutive model of cold-formed steel considering the cold-forming effect and a triaxial plastic-damage constitutive model of the infilled concrete. Good agreement was achieved and the average discrepancy between the experimental and FE results was less than 5%. Based on the verified models, a further parametric analysis was carried out to reveal the influence of various factors on the strength and behavior of the concrete-filled rectangular cold-formed steel tubular stub columns. The factors included constitutive models adopted for cold-formed steel, length over width ratio of the rectangular section, wall-thickness and width, and concrete strength and yield strength of the cold-formed steel. A total of 144 FE models were analyzed. The stress nephogram was reasonably simplified in accordance with the limit state and a theoretical formula considering confinement coefficient was proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of concrete-filled rectangular cold-formed steel tubular stub columns using the superposition method. The calculated results showed satisfactory agreement with both the experimental and FE results, which proved the validity and accuracy of the formula proposed in this paper. In the proposed formula, the confinement coefficient of square concrete-filled cold-formed steel tubular stub columns is larger than that of hot-rolled steel counterparts but smaller than that of the stainless steel counterparts.

Existing experimental research on bond properties of the interface between Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) and damaged concrete is limited, although CFRP strengthening technology has been widely used for corroded reinforced concrete structures. This work investigated the bond behavior of CFRP to the corrosion-cracked concrete interface, in which three factors were considered for experimentation, including corrosion degree, concrete strength and concrete cover thickness. The tests were conducted by developing a self-balancing double shear lap test device. In addition, a corrosion scene was provided simultaneously to simulate the external corrosion environment. The results showed that three peeling modes of CFRP sheets were observed with respect to corrosion degrees of the steel bars. The effects of the three factors on the stripping bearing capacity and effective bond length of CFRP sheets were discussed by systematic parametric analysis. Finally, a nonlinear degenerate law of CFRP-to-concrete interface considering the corrosion degree was improved and verified in this study.

Numerous studies have been carried out on the axially loaded circular concrete-filled steel tube (CCFST) stub columns. However, to date, no clear evaluation criterion for the compatibility of its design parameters has been established. In the present study, the compatibility of the design parameters (concrete compressive strength fc, steel yield strength fy, diameter D and thickness of steel tube t) of axially loaded CCFST stub columns was quantitatively investigated in terms of the contribution of the composite actions to the axial bearing capacity of the columns. The composite ratio λ was proposed as an indicator to represent the effectiveness of the composite actions. A numerical framework of the determination of λ was established, making use of a series of existing widely recognized constitutive models of structural steel and concrete. Some modifications were carried out on these models to ensure the numerical stability of the presented analysis. Moreover, the rationality of the combined use of these models was verified. The analytical results show that excessive or very small D/t ratio should be avoided in design. Meanwhile, the combined use of low-strength steel and high-strength concrete should be avoided. A table of optimal D/t ratios corresponding to different material strength matches was provided for designers. Finally, an optimization of the design parameters using the proposed method and the existing design specification was performed.

This paper studied the composite action of concrete-filled circular aluminum alloy tubular (CFCAT) stub columns under axial compression. A fine-meshed finite three-dimensional (3D) solid element model making use of a tri-axial plastic-damage constitutive model of concrete and elastoplastic constitutive model of aluminum alloy was established. A parametric study utilizing the verified finite element (FE) model was carried out and the analytical results were exploited to investigate the composite actions of concrete-filled circular aluminum alloy tubular stub columns subjected axial compression. Compared with the concrete-filled steel tube (CFCST) stub columns, the aluminum alloy tube exerted a weaker constraint effect on the infilled concrete due to its lower elastic modulus. Based on the FE analytical results and regression method, the composite action model of concrete-filled circular aluminum alloy tubular stub columns was proposed. By generalizing the stress nephogram of the concrete-filled circular aluminum alloy tubular stub column at the limit state, a design formula was proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity the columns using the superposition method. The predicted results of the proposed formula show a good agreement with both the experimental and FE analytical results. The comparison between the proposed formula and current design methods indicates that the proposed formula is more accurate and convenient to use.

Recycled aggregate concrete-filled steel tubular (RACFST) columns are widely recognized as efficient structural members that can reduce the environmental impact of the building industry and improve the mechanical behavior of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of recycled aggregate concrete-filled circular steel tubular (RACFCST) stub columns subjected to the axial loading. Three-dimensional finite element (FE) models were established using a triaxial plastic-damage constitutive model of RAC considering the replacement ratio of recycled aggregates. The FE analytical results revealed that the decreased ultimate bearing capacity of RACFCST stub columns compared with conventional concrete infilled steel tubular (CFST) columns was mainly due to the weakened confinement effect and efficiency. This trend will become more apparent with the larger replacement ratio of recycled aggregates. A practical design formula of the ultimate bearing capacity of RACFCST stub columns subjected to axial load was proposed on the basis of the reasonably simplified cross-sectional stress nephogram at the ultimate state. The derivation process incorporated the equilibrium condition and the superposition theory. The proposed equation was evaluated by comparing its accuracy and accessibility to some well-known design formulae proposed by other researchers and some widely used design codes.

The high-strength bolt shear connector in prefabricated concrete slab has advantages in applications as it reduces time during the construction of steel-concrete composite building structures and bridges. In this research, an innovative and advanced bolt shear connector in steel-concrete composite structures is proposed. To investigate the fundamental mechanical behavior and the damage form, 22 static push-off tests were conducted with consideration of different bolt dimensions, the reserved hole constraint condition, and the dimension of slab holes. A finite element (FE) model was established and verified by using test results, and then the model was utilized to investigate the influence of concrete strength, bolt dimension, yield strength, bolt pretension, as well as length-to-diameter ratio of high strength bolts on the performances of shear connectors. On the basis of FE simulation and test results, new design formulas for the calculation of shear resistance behavior were proposed, and comparisons were made with current standards, including AISC, EN 1994-1-1, GB 50017-2017, and relevant references, to check the calculation efficiency. It is confirmed that the proposed equation is in better agreement with the experimental results.
