Nitrate pollution in surface water and ground water has drawn wide attention, which has brought challenges to human health and natural ecology. Electroreduction of nitrate to NH3 in waste water was a way to turn waste into wealth, which has attracted interest of many researchers. Using Nickel foam as substrate, we prepared Pd/In bimetallic electrode (NF-Pd/In) according to a two-step electrodeposition method. There are many irregularly shaped particles in the size range of 10 nm-100 nm accumulated on the surface of prepared NF-Pd/In electrode, which could supply high specific area and more active sites for nitrate electroreduction. FESEM-EDS, XRD and XPS analysis confirmed the uniform distribution of Pd and In on the surface of prepared NF-Pd/In electrode, with a mass ratio of 4.5/1. Above 96% of 100 mg/L NO3--N was removed and 95% of NH3 selectivity was reached after 5 h of reaction under -1.6 V vs. Ag/AgCl sat. KCl when using 0.05 mol/L of Na2SO4 as electrolyte. High concentration of NaCl (0.05 mol/L) in the test solution dramatically decreased the NH3 selectivity because the produced NH3 could be further oxidized to N2 by the formed HClO from Cl-. EIS tests indicated that the prepared NF-Pd/In electrode showed much lower electrode resistance than NF due to the adsorptive property and electrocatalytic ability for nitrate removal. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the presence of In could promote the conversion of NO3- to *NO3 during the process of nitrate electroreduction to NH3. Circulating tests demonstrated the stability of prepared NF-Pd/In electrode.

BACKGROUND: As a global trauma event, the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) hugely impacts people's mental health and well-being. The purpose of our study is threefold: first, investigate the relationship between exposure to COVID-19 and life satisfaction among a large sample in China; second, test the mediating role of hyperarousal in the association between exposure to COVID-19 and life satisfaction; third, explore the moderating/mediating role of affective forecasting in the association between hyperarousal and life satisfaction. METHOD: The current study recruited 5546 participants to complete a set of self-report questionnaires online from April 22, 2020 to April 24, 2020. The moderated mediation and chain mediation model analyses were conducted using the SPSS software and PROCESS macro program. RESULTS: Exposure to COVID-19 negatively predicted life satisfaction (Effect = -0.058, p < 0.001). This relationship was partially mediated by the hyperarousal level (Effect = -0.018, CI = [-0.024, -0.013]). The moderating role of forecasted positive affect (PA)/forecasted negative affect (NA) between hyperarousal and life satisfaction was significant (ß = 0.058, CI = [0.035, 0.081]; ß = 0.037, CI = [0.014, 0.06]). The chain mediating effect of hyperarousal and forecasted PA/forecasted NA on the relationship between exposure to COVID-19 and life satisfaction was also significant (Effect = -0.003, CI = [-0.004, -0.002]; Effect = -0.006, CI = [-0.008, -0.004]). LIMITATIONS: The cross-sectional design precludes causal inference. CONCLUSION: Greater exposure to COVID-19 was associated with more severe hyperarousal symptoms, decreased life satisfaction. Forecasted PA and forecasted NA could moderate and mediate the negative impact of hyperarousal on life satisfaction. The moderating/mediating role of forecasted PA/NA implied that future interventions targeting at improving affective forecasting and reducing hyperarousal might be helpful to improve life satisfaction during the post-COVID-19 era.

BACKGROUND: Emotional stimuli used as targets of working memory (WM) tasks can moderate age-related differences in WM performance, showing that aging is associated with reductions in negativity bias. This phenomenon is referred to as the positivity effect. However, there is little research on whether emotional distractors have a similar moderating effect. Moreover, the underlying neural mechanism of this effect has not been studied. In this study, we examined the behavioral and neurophysiological basis for age differences in resistance to emotional distractors within WM. METHODS: Older adults (n = 30, ages 60-74) and young adults (n = 35, ages 19-26) performed a 2-back task in which a digit was superimposed on a face with a happy, angry, or neutral expression as a distractor. Event-related potential (ERP) was simultaneously recorded to assess P2, N2, and later positive potential (LPP) amplitudes. RESULTS: Older adults were less accurate and slower than young adults on the WM task. Moreover, the results demonstrated a significant interaction between age and emotional valence on response accuracy, young adults' performance was worse when the distractor was neutral or positive than when it was negative, but there was no effect of the emotional valence of distractors on older adults' WM performance. ERP analyses revealed greater P2 amplitude in older adults than young adults, regardless of the emotional valence of distractors. However, older adults and young adults did not differ on N2 or LPP amplitude, and negative distractors elicited greater N2 than positive distractors in both age groups. CONCLUSIONS: The behavioral findings provided evidence of age-related reductions in negativity bias. Thus, the behavioral measures indicated a positivity effect in WM. However, the ERP results did not show this same interaction. These discrepant results raise questions about whether and to what extent older and young adults differ in controlling the effect of emotional distractors in WM.

Iron-carbon (Fe-C) microelectrolysis has attracted considerable attention in wastewater treatment due to its excellent ability to remove contaminants. Herein, novel Fe-C granules were synthesized by simple calcination method for removing organic contaminations, and a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method, namely pre-magnetization, was used to improve the micro-electrolysis performance of Fe-C. Batch experiments proved that premagnetized iron-carbon (pre-Fe-C) could significantly improve the removal of methyl orange (MO) at different Fe-C mass ratios (1:2-2:1), material dosages (1.0-2.5 g/L), initial pH values (3.0-5.0), and MO concentrations (10.0-50.0 mg/L). Electrochemical analysis showed that premagnetization could increase the current density and reduce the charge transfer resistance of the microelectrolysis system, making Fe-C more susceptible to electrochemical corrosion. Characterizations confirmed that the corrosion products of the materials included FeO, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4, and more corrosion products were formed in the pre-Fe-C system. Radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy verified that •OH, 1O2, and O2-• were all involved in pollutant removal, and premagnetization could promote the generation of more reactive oxygen species. Overall, the pre-Fe-C process could effectively remove various organic pollutants, exhibit good adaptability to complex water environments, and hold potential for industrial applications.

Widespread nitrobenzene (NB) contamination in groundwater requires an economical and effective remediation technology. In situ microbial reactive zone enhanced by injecting emulsified vegetable oil (EVO) is an effective method for remediating NB-contaminated groundwater, which can be reduced to aniline (AN) effectively in the reactive zone. However, the bio-mechanism of NB remediation in a real contaminated site is still unclear. Thus, a 3-D tank was established to conduct a pilot-scale experiment and the bacterial communities in the tank were analyzed by 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing. The results suggested that the injection of EVO can stimulate some certain microorganisms to grow, and reduce NB though biological and biochemical processes. There were three degradation pathways of NB: (1) direct oxidation by Pseudomonas; (2) direct mineralization by Clostridium sensu stricto; and (3) coupled reduction of NB through microbial dissimilatory iron reduction by Geobacter and Arthrobacter. Among these pathways, the coupled reduction process is the main degradation pathway.

Combined pollution in groundwater has become increasingly serious. Adding emulsified vegetable oil to an aquifer is an effective method to remediate multiple pollutants. However, the efficiency and threshold values for the remediation of groundwater contaminated by both nitrate and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) stimulated by emulsified vegetable oil remain unclear. In this study, emulsified vegetable oil was used for the first time to simultaneously remediate nitrate and Cr(VI) in groundwater. The results suggested that the addition of emulsified vegetable oil could effectively remediate nitrate and Cr(VI), and there were interplay effects between nitrate and Cr(VI). Nitrate promoted Cr(VI) removal, while Cr(VI) inhibited nitrate reduction. The remediation thresholds for nitrate and Cr(VI) alone were 1600 mg/L and 10 mg/L, respectively (emulsified vegetable oil = 7 g/L). For combined pollution, the remediation threshold values were 868.10 mg/L for nitrate and 12.43 mg/L for Cr(VI) (emulsified vegetable oil = 7 g/L). The dose of emulsified vegetable oil played an important role in the threshold value. When the concentration of emulsified vegetable oil was 10.8 g/L, the maximum threshold values were 1379.79 mg/L for nitrate and 12.67 mg/L for Cr(VI). When the pollutant concentration was below the threshold value, the contaminant could be completely removed.

Effect mechanisms of organic matter (OM) degradation and methane (CH4) emission during sewage sludge (SS) composting with added vesuvianite (V) were studied by high-throughput sequencing (HTS) and phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt). Results show that the addition of V accelerated the OM degradation and decreased the cumulative CH4 emissions by 33.6% relative to the control. In addition, V significantly decreased the mcrA gene abundance and the methanogen community richness at the genus level. PICRUSt also indicated that V strengthens the microbial metabolic function and enzymatic activity related to OM degradation, and reduced the enzymatic activity related to CH4 production. Methanogens community variation analysis proved the ratio of carbon and nitrogen and moisture content are the significant variables affecting CH4 emissions. Thus, optimizing the ratio of carbon and nitrogen and moisture content will decrease CH4 emission during SS composting.

The correlation between the magnetocaloric effect and magnetotransport property was investigated in Ni43Co7Mn39-xCrxSn11 Heusler alloys. The asymmetric isothermal-magnetoresistance around the phase transformation temperature was observed, from which a parameter γ, determined as the ratio of the asymmetric magnetoresistance to the temperature coefficient of resistance, is proposed. According to Maxwell's equation, the parameter γ is analyzed to be equivalent to the transformation temperature change induced by a magnetic field in martensitic transformation. This finding is confirmed by experimental results. In addition, the γ values can be used to estimate the magnetic entropy change of the martensitic transformation directly without measuring the comprehensive temperature dependence of magnetization curves.

Microbial dissimilatory iron reduction could remediate reducible pollutants in groundwater, such as nitrobenzene (NB). But the natural attenuation rate in aquifer is limited. To stimulate this process, emulsified vegetable oil (EVO) was injected as a remediation agent. The mechanism of this process was studied. Results showed that the addition of EVO made iron easier used by microorganisms and thus promoted dissimilatory iron reduction. The readily used Fe(III) served as electron acceptor and was reduced to Fe(II). Fe(II) supplied electrons to NB, with NB reduced to aniline. Sulphide in the aquifer media also donated electrons and oxidized to polysulfide, then forming precipitates with Fe(II) to the surface of aquifer media, and thus slowing down the electron supplying of EVO and forming permanent efficiency for NB remediation. The work helps to complete a systematic understanding of NB remediation process under stimulation of EVO.

Widespread contamination by nitrobenzene (NB) in sediments and groundwater requires better understanding of the biogeochemical removal process of the pollutant. NB degradation, coupled with dissimilatory iron reduction, is one of the most efficient pollutant removal methods. However, research on NB degradation coupled to indigenous microorganism dissimilatory iron reduction stimulated by electron donors is still experimental. A model for remediation in an actual polluted site does not currently exist. Therefore, in this study, the dynamics was derived from the Michaelis-Menten model (when the mass ratio of emulsified vegetable oil and NB reached the critical value 91:1). The effect of SO42-, NO3-, Ca2+/Mg2+, and the grain size of aquifer media on the dynamics were studied, and the NB degradation dynamic model was then modified based on the most significant factors. Utilizing the model, the remediation time could be calculated in a contaminated site.

Anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO) is considered to be an important sink of CH4 in habitats as marine sediments. But, few studies focused on AMO in landfills which may be an important sink of CH4 derived from waste fermentation. To show evidence of AMO and to uncover function anaerobic methanotroph (ANME) community in landfill, different age waste samples were collected in Jinqianpu landfill located in north China. Through high-throughput sequencing, Methanomicrobiales and Methanosarcinales archaea associated with ANME and reverse methanogenic archaea of Methanosarcina and Methanobacterium were detected. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) (Desulfobulbus and Desulfococcus) which could couple with ANME-conducting AMO were also found. But, the community structure of ANME had no significant difference with depths. From the results of investigation, we can come to a conclusion that sulfate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (SR-DAMO) would be the dominant AMO process in the landfill, while iron-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (M/IR-DAMO) process was weak though concentration of ferric iron was large in the landfill. Denitrification-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (NR-DAMO) was negative because of lack of nitrate and relevant function microorganisms in the landfill. Results also indicate that CH4 mitigation would have higher potential by increasing electron acceptor contents and promoting the growth of relevant function microorganisms.

RESUMO

The thermodynamics and transport properties of strong-rail ladder systems are investigated by means of Green's function theory. It is shown that the magnetic behavior clearly manifests a typical antiferromagnetism with gapped or gapless low-lying excitations, which is in agreement with the experimental results. In addition, the temperature-field-induced phase diagram is explored, and we demonstrate a Luttinger liquid behavior in the window h(c) (marking the ending of the M=0 plateau)
