RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the associations of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and the weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) with the impairment of activities of daily living (ADL) in older Chinese people. METHODS: A total of 13 260 participants aged 65 years and older from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey were included in this cross-sectional study. BMI, WC and the WWI were calculated from measurements of height, weight and WC. Binary logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Non-linear correlations were investigated using restricted cubic spline curves. RESULTS: In multivariate logistic regression fully adjusted for confounding variables, our analyses revealed significant associations between WC and WWI and ADL impairment, with adjusted ORs (95% CI) of 1.01 (1.00, 1.01) and 1.08 (1.03, 1.12), respectively. Meanwhile, participants with a high WWI had a higher risk of ADL impairment compared with those with a low WWI, with an adjusted OR (95% CI) of 1.12 (1.02, 1.23). Subgroup analyses showed that only the association between WWI and ADL impairment did not differ in any of the different populations. In addition, we found that BMI, WC and WWI were non-linearly associated with ADL impairment. CONCLUSIONS: There are significant associations between WC and WWI and ADL impairment in older Chinese people. The findings show the ability of the WWI to serve as a comprehensive and effective indicator of obesity in older Chinese people and emphasize the importance of assessing WWI in screening and preventing ADL impairment in older people.

RESUMO

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based composite electrolytes (PCEs) are considered as promising candidates for next-generation lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) due to their high safety, easy fabrication, and good electrochemical stability. Here, we utilize operando grazing-incidence small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering to probe the correlation of electrochemically induced changes and the buried morphology and crystalline structure of the PCE. Results show that the two irreversible reactions, PEO-Li+ reduction and TFSI- decomposition, cause changes in the crystalline structure, array orientation, and morphology of the PCE. In addition, the reversible Li plating/stripping process alters the inner morphology, especially the PEO-LiTFSI domain radius and distance between PEO-LiTFSI domains, rather than causing crystalline structure and orientation changes. This work provides a new path to monitor a working battery in real time and to a detailed understanding of the Li+ diffusion mechanism, which is essential for developing highly transferable and interface-stable PCE-based LMBs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA) is a form of childhood arthritis with clinical features such as fever, lymphadenopathy, arthritis, rash, and serositis. It seriously affects the growth and development of children and has a high rate of disability and mortality. SJIA may result from genetic, infectious, or autoimmune factors since the precise source of the disease is unknown. Our study aims to develop a genetic-based diagnostic model to explore the identification of SJIA at the genetic level. METHODS: The gene expression dataset of peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples from SJIA was collected from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Then, three GEO datasets (GSE11907-GPL96, GSE8650-GPL96 and GSE13501) were merged and used as a training dataset, which included 125 SJIA samples and 92 health samples. GSE7753 was used as a validation dataset. The limma method was used to screen differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Feature selection was performed using Lasso, random forest (RF)-recursive feature elimination (RFE) and RF classifier. RESULTS: We finally identified 4 key genes (ALDH1A1, CEACAM1, YBX3 and SLC6A8) that were essential to distinguish SJIA from healthy samples. And we combined the 4 key genes and performed a grid search as well as 10-fold cross-validation with 5 repetitions to finally identify the RF model with optimal mtry. The mean area under the curve (AUC) value for 5-fold cross-validation was greater than 0.95. The model's performance was then assessed once more using the validation dataset, and an AUC value of 0.990 was obtained. All of the above AUC values demonstrated the strong robustness of the SJIA diagnostic model. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully developed a new SJIA diagnostic model that can be used for a novel aid in the identification of SJIA. In addition, the identification of 4 key genes that may serve as potential biomarkers for SJIA provides new insights to further understand the mechanisms of SJIA.

RESUMO

Control over product selectivity of the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a crucial challenge for the sustainable production of carbon-based chemical feedstocks. In this regard, single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising materials due to their tunable coordination environments, which could enable tailored catalytic activities and selectivities, as well as new insights into structure-activity relationships. However, direct evidence for selectivity control via systematic tuning of the SAC coordination environment is scarce. In this work, we have synthesized two differently coordinated Bi SACs anchored to the same host material (carbon black) and characterized their CO2RR activities and selectivities. We find that oxophilic, oxygen-coordinated Bi atoms produce HCOOH, while nitrogen-coordinated Bi atoms generate CO. Importantly, use of the same support material assured that alternation of the coordination environment is the dominant factor for controlling the CO2RR product selectivity. Overall, this work demonstrates the structure-activity relationship of Bi SACs, which can be utilized to establish control over CO2RR product distributions, and highlights the promise for engineering atomic coordination environments of SACs to tune reaction pathways.

RESUMO

Asphalt pavements absorb more than 90% of the incident solar radiation, which induces not only high-temperature degradation but also the urban heat island (UHI) effect. In this study, a novel nanoscale non-stoichiometric compound containing tungsten (MxWO3) was used for the first time to prepare thermal shielding coatings to reduce the temperature of pavements and mitigate the UHI effect. Coatings with good shielding characteristics were selected for outdoor thermal insulation tests to evaluate their properties. MxWO3 (M = K, Na, Cs) exhibited significant thermal shielding, especially CsxWO3. Outdoor thermal insulation tests were performed for the CsxWO3 coatings, and it was found that the greater the doping, the more significant the thermal shielding effect. Compared with untreated pavements, the surface-coated pavement exhibited significant cooling at 5 cm and 15 cm depth-wise, which reduced the overall pavement temperature by 1-2 °C, and the coating thickness affected the cooling effect.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: China is among the largest and fastest aging countries. The elderly population is more vulnerable, with higher proportion of inappropriate sleep duration and risk of mortality, compared with young and middle-aged adults. Single-measured sleep duration has been associated with mortality, but the health effects of long-term sleep duration trajectories remain unknown. This study aimed to explore the prospective associations between sleep duration trajectories and all-cause mortality among Chinese elderly. METHODS: Participants (n = 3,895; median age: 82 years; females: 53.3%) who reported sleep duration in all three surveys (2005, 2008, and 2011) from the community-based Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) were followed up until 2019 (about 8 years). We identified sleep duration trajectories by latent class mixed model and explored their association with all-cause mortality using Cox hazard proportional regression and Laplace regression models. Further, stratified analysis by demographic characteristics and lifestyles and sensitivity analysis by lag effect, health-related factors, and inverse probability weighting were used to verify the robustness of the association. In addition, we explored the threshold effect of baseline sleep duration on the risk of all-cause mortality. RESULTS: We documented 1,881 all-cause deaths during 16,689 person-years of follow-up. Five sleep duration trajectories were identified: moderately increased trajectory (28.1%), rapidly increased trajectory (7.2%), persistent sleep trajectory of 7 h (33.7%), moderately decreased trajectory (21.3%), and rapidly decreased trajectory (9.7%). Compared with the persistent sleep trajectory of 7 h, the multivariable-adjusted HRs (95%CI) for moderately increased trajectory, rapidly increased trajectory, moderately decreased trajectory, and rapidly decreased trajectory were 1.21 (1.08, 1.36), 1.21 (1.01, 1.44), 0.95 (0.82, 1.10), and 0.93 (0.78, 1.11), respectively; and the corresponding difference in median survival time (95%CI) were -0.53 (-1.01, -0.05), -0.43 (0.16, -1.02), 0.26 (-0.34, 0.86), and 0.25 (-0.51, 1.02), respectively. Stratified and sensitivity analyses showed consistent results. Threshold analysis indicated a sharply increased risk of mortality in participants whose sleep exceeds 9 h (HR = 1.20, 95%CI: 1.11, 1.30). CONCLUSION: Compared with the persistent sleep trajectory of 7 h, moderately and rapidly increased sleep duration trajectories were associated with higher subsequent mortality in Chinese elderly. Those who report sleep exceeding 9 h may be at high risk for all-cause mortality.

RESUMO

Nafion ionomer, composed of hydrophobic perfluorocarbon backbones and hydrophilic sulfonic acid side chains, is the most widely used additive for preparing catalyst layers (CLs) for electrochemical CO2 reduction, but its impact on the performance of CO2 electrolysis remains poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigate the role of the catalyst ink formulation on CO2 electrolysis using commercial CuO nanoparticles as the model pre-catalyst. We find that the presence of Nafion is essential for achieving stable product distributions due to its ability to stabilize the catalyst morphology under reaction conditions. Moreover, the Nafion content and solvent composition (water/alcohol fraction) regulate the internal structure of Nafion coatings, as well as the catalyst morphology, thereby significantly impacting CO2 electrolysis performance, resulting in variations of C2+ product Faradaic efficiency (FE) by >3×, with C2+ FE ranging from 17 to 54% on carbon paper substrates. Using a combination of ellipsometry and in situ Raman spectroscopy during CO2 reduction, we find that such selectivity differences stem from changes to the local reaction microenvironment. In particular, the combination of high water/alcohol ratios and low Nafion fractions in the catalyst ink results in stable and favorable microenvironments, increasing the local CO2/H2O concentration ratio and promoting high CO surface coverage to facilitate C2+ production in long-term CO2 electrolysis. Therefore, this work provides insights into the critical role of Nafion binders and underlines the importance of optimizing Nafion/solvent formulations as a means of enhancing the performance of electrochemical CO2 reduction systems.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of moxibustion of "Feishu" (BL13),"Tianshu" (ST25) for asthma by simultaneously treating lung and intestine (i.e., treating both lung and intestine at the same time) in asthmatic rats. METHODS: A total of 48 SD rats were randomly divided into normal, model, lung treatment and joint-treatment of lung and intestine (joint-treatment) groups, with 12 rats in each. The asthma model was established by subcutaneous (bilateral back and inguinal regions) and intraperitoneal injection of mixture solution of albumin and Aluminium Hydroxide gel (on day 1st, and 9th) and followed by inhalation of atomized 1% ovalbumin (on day 15th, 20 min each time, once daily for 1 week). Moxibustion was applied to bilateral BL13 for rats of the lung treatment group or bilateral BL13 and ST25 for rats of the joint-treatment group. One hour after the intervention, the rats in the later three groups were separately given nebulized 1% ovalbumin solution inhalation for 20 min. The treatments were conducted once daily for 14 consecutive days. After intervention, the lung functions including the forced expiratory flow 25% (FEF 25%), maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF), dynamic lung compliance (Cdyn), forced expiratory volume/ forced vital capacity (FEV/FVC), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and lung resistance (RL) were measured by using a small animal lung function detector, and pathological changes and collagen deposition in the lung tissues were observed by H.E. and Masson staining, separately. The levels of interleukin (IL)-17, IL-4, IL-13, IL-33, IL-5, leukotriene (LT) and thymic stromal lymphocyte (TSLP) in the lung tissue were measured by ELISA. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, the FEF 25%, MMEF, Cdyn, FEV/FVC and PEF were significantly decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01), and the pulmonary RL, collagen deposition, and contents of IL-17, IL-4, IL-13, IL-33, IL-5, TSLP and LT were notably increased (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the model group. After intervention, the MMEF and Cdyn in the lung treatment group, PEF, MMEF, Cdyn, FEV/FVC, FEF 25% in the joint-treatment group, were markedly increased (P<0.05, P<0.01), whereas the collagen deposition, IL-17, IL-4 and TSLP in both the lung treatment and joint-treatment groups, RL, IL-13, IL-33, IL-5 and LT in the joint-treatment group were considerably down-regulated (P<0.05, P<0.01). The effects of the joint treatment were apparently superior to those of lung treatment in down-regulating the contents of TSLP and LT (P<0.05, P<0.01). H.E. staining showed thickened alveolar wall, infiltration of a large number of inflammatory cells in the bronchus of the model group, which was relatively milder in the joint-treatment group. CONCLUSION: "Joint treatment of lung and intestine" with moxibustion is superior to "lung treatment" alone in ameliorating the lung function and mitigating airway inflammation in rats with asthma.

RESUMO

This study aimed to compare the changes in physical activity (PA), chronic disease, and mental health indicators of Koreans before and after the COVID-19 outbreak, using raw data from more than 400,000 representative samples from the 2019-2020 Community Health Survey by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and to explore the correlations among them. We used two-way ANOVA to analyze changes and differences in PA and obesity levels. We assessed the influence of gender and recurrent PA using chi-square tests for mental health status and chronic disease. Finally, we performed a correlation analysis to determine the relationships among PA days, mental health, and chronic disease. The results showed that, compared to the levels before the COVID-19 period, moderate-intensity (Days: 1.415~1.217; Time: 114.688~107.321) and high-intensity (Days: 0.798~0.671; Time: 112.866~106.110) PA significantly decreased in Koreans during the COVID-19 period, while low-intensity (Time: 60.305~61.735) PA increased. Before and during the COVID-19 period, men (18,436 (8.1%)~16,124 (7.0%)) performed PA more regularly than women (13,207 (5.8%)~9382 (4.1%)). Compared to the number of regular PA participants before the COVID-19 period, regular PA participants (male, female) decreased from 31,643 (13.8%) to 25,506 (11.1%) during the COVID-19 period. Compared with the levels before the COVID-19 period, the experience rates of stress (3.1%~2.6%), depression (0.8%~0.6%), HBP (3.0%~2.2%), and diabetes (1.2%~0.9%) significantly changed under different levels of conventional PA intervention. In addition, the obesity rate during the COVID-19 period (23.957) was higher than it was before COVID-19 (23.477). During the COVID-19 period, the PA of Koreans was greatly restricted, but low-intensity PA was maintained and increased. PA is an effective activity for maintaining mental health and for preventing and reducing chronic diseases. Recommendations for appropriate intensity or a combination of high-, moderate-, and low-intensity PA should be based on the health status of Koreans to help them maintain mental health and to reduce the risk of chronic diseases during COVID-19 social distancing.

RESUMO

Objective: Studies on the association between sleep behavior and health often ignored the confounding effects of biorhythm-related factors. This study aims to explore the independent and joint effects of sleep duration and sleep quality on suboptimal self-rated health (SRH) in medical students. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Proportional stratified cluster sampling was used to randomly recruit students from various medical specialties at a medical university in eastern China. Our questionnaire mainly included information on basic demographic characteristics, SRH, sleep behavior, and biorhythm-related factors. The independent and joint effects of sleep duration and sleep quality on suboptimal SRH were assessed by logistic regression after controlling for potential confounders. Results: Of 1,524 medical students (mean age = 19.9 years, SD = 1.2 years; 59.1% female), 652 (42.8%) had suboptimal SRH. Most medical students (51.5%) slept for 7 h/night, followed by ≥8 (29.1%) and ≤ 6 h (19.4%). After adjusting for basic demographic characteristics and biorhythm-related factors, compared with students who slept for ≥8 h/night, the adjusted ORs (95%CI) for those who slept 7 and ≤ 6 h/night were 1.36 (1.03, 1.81) and 2.28 (1.60, 3.26), respectively (P < 0.001 for trend); compared with those who had good sleep quality, the adjusted ORs (95%CI) for those who had fair and poor sleep quality were 4.12 (3.11, 5.45) and 11.60 (6.57, 20.46), respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Further, compared with those who slept for ≥8 h/night and good sleep quality, those who slept ≤ 6 h and poor sleep quality had the highest odds of suboptimal SRH (OR 24.25, 95%CI 8.73, 67.34). Conclusions: Short sleep and poor sleep quality were independently and jointly associated with higher odds of suboptimal SRH among medical students.

RESUMO

Introduction: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is becoming increasingly important as it provides further options for treating many diseases worldwide. The TCM "Yupingfeng" has been used in China for over 800 years, and its clinical efficacy and safety for COPD treatment have been proven in previous studies. The objective of this study was to compare the long-term cost-effectiveness of Yupingfeng granules and the current conventional treatment for COPD patients in China. Methods: A Markov model was constructed from the perspective of the Chinese healthcare system using TreeAge Pro 2011. The model cycle length was 12 months, and the cycle time was set to 10 years. Data from a randomized controlled trial were used to generate the number of acute exacerbations, COPD assessment test (CAT) score and actual medication used. The state transition probabilities, costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were derived from available sources. A threshold of 72,447 yuan per QALY gained was used as a cost-effectiveness criterion. One-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were conducted to verify the model. In addition, the cost-effectiveness of a 35-year cycle was evaluated as a scenario analysis. Results: In the basic-case analysis, the ICER of adding Yupingfeng granules to the current conventional treatment drugs was ¥2123.04 per QALY, which was less than the threshold (one-time per capita GDP).Sensitivity analyses showed the results to be robust. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis showed that the probability of the ICER being less than the one-time per capita GDP threshold was 100%. In the scenario analysis, the incremental cost-effectiveness was ¥12,051.27 per QALY which was also under the one-time per capita GDP. Conclusion: By reducing the number of acute exacerbations of COPD, thereby correspondingly reducing the follow-up treatment cost, Yupingfeng granules combined with conventional treatment were found to provide a cost-effective therapeutic strategy for COPD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is more likely to metastasize to the bone. Previous researches have revealed that the vitamin D receptor (VDR) contributes to breast cancer progression and bone metastasis in mouse and human breast cells, and hairless (Hr) protein interacts with VDR in the mammalian hair cycle. This study aimed to explore the expression of VDR/Hr in breast cancer, and the correlation between VDR/Hr and prognosis, bone metastasis, and metastasis-related prognosis. METHODS: The expression of VDR and Hr was analyzed on 119 breast cancer tissues and corresponding normal breast tissue from each of the breast cancer samples by immunohistochemistry staining, and the databases were supplemented as well. RESULTS: The expression of the VDR protein was significantly decreased in breast cancer patients (p < 0.05), inversely, the UALCAN (p = 0.000) and GEPIA (p > 0.05) databases showed that the VDR mRNA expression tended to be higher in tumor tissues. The Hr protein was expressed at a low level within breast cancer specimens (p < 0.05), which was in agreement with the level of Hr mRNA in UALCAN (p = 0.005) and GEPIA (p > 0.05). The protein levels of VDR and Hr were positively correlated (p > 0.05), while the mRNA levels suggested a close relationship with GEPIA (p < 0.05). Low expression of Hr protein displayed a tendency for longer overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS), and its mRNA data also revealed the same trend in the Kaplan-Meier dataset (both p > 0.05). However, VDR protein and mRNA with low expression had markedly shorter OS and RFS (both p < 0.05). The downregulation of VDR protein was significantly associated with an advanced stage (p < 0.05). Low VDR protein was an independent risk factor for poor prognosis (p < 0.05) and was negatively correlated with bone metastasis (p < 0.05). VDR protein and mRNA levels were both downregulated in breast cancer with bone metastasis (both p < 0.05). The area under ROC curve (AUC) for VDR protein expression to identify patients with bone metastasis was 0.661 (p < 0.05) and the AUC for VDR level to predict 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year OS was 0.621, 0.664, and 0.805 in patients with bone metastasis, respectively (p < 0.05). VDR with low expression accelerated bone metastasis and metastasis-related poor survival (both p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: VDR expression is a notable prognostic factor in primary breast cancer patients for predicting bone metastases and unfavorable clinical outcome.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis of delirium is very important for prevention and treatment. Present study was designed to validate the 3-Minute Diagnostic Interview for CAM-defined Delirium Chinese version (3D-CAM-CN) in surgical ICU patients. METHODS: In this prospective diagnostic study, the 3D-CAM was translated into Chinese with culture adaption. Two interviewers (Roles A and B) independently administrated 3D-CAM-CN assessment in adult patients from postoperative days 1 to day 3. At the meantime, a panel of psychiatrists diagnosed delirium according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-fifth edition as the reference standard. The sensitivity and specificity were calculated to analyze the diagnostic character of the 3D-CAM-CN. Kappa coefficient was used to evaluate interrater reliability. RESULTS: Two hundred forty-five adult patients were assessed for at least 2 days, resulting a total of 647 paired-assessments. When compared with the reference standard, the sensitivity and specificity of the 3D-CAM-CN assessment were 87.2 and 96.7%, respectively, by Role A and 84.6 and 97.4%, respectively, by Role B, with good interrater reliability (Kappa coefficient = 0.82, P < 0.001). It also performed well in patients with mild cognitive impairment, with the sensitivity from 85.7 to 100% and the specificity from 95.7 to 96.4%. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that the 3D-CAM-CN can be used as a reliable and accurate instrument for delirium assessment in surgical patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trail was approved by the Clinical Research Ethic Committee of Peking University First Hospital (No. 2017-1321) and registered on Chinese clinical trial registry on July 6, 2017 (ChiCTR-OOC-17011887).

RESUMO

In order to explore the effect of pretreatment on corn straw degradation and biogas production, corn straw was pretreated with mixed microbes and composting at 30°C for 14 days. The characteristics of material were measured and analyzed in the pretreatment process. Then, the pretreated and untreated corn straw was digested by anaerobic fermentation. Gas production and methane content of corn straw were analyzed. The results showed that the biological pretreatment process with mixed microbes could accelerate the degradation rate of straw and increase the degradation efficiency of lignin. The pH value of material was more stable, and the content of organic matter in the material was higher in the pretreatment process of corn straw with mixed microbes. The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images showed that the structure of the lignocellulose was changed by mixed microbes, increasing the exposed area of cellulose and hemicellulose, which was beneficial to improve the utilization efficiency of straw. The degradation rates of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin were 44.4%, 34.9% and 39.2%, respectively, after the pretreatment process with mixed microbes. Pretreatment was more helpful to increase the methane content in the anaerobic fermentation process of corn straw pretreated with mixed microbes, and could also shorten the fermentation period.

RESUMO

RESEARCH QUESTION: In this meta-analysis, the association between endometrial thickness (EMT) and cycle outcomes after IVF is explored. Associations between EMT and cycle outcomes according to study and individual characteristics were also assessed. DESIGN: Studies evaluating associations between EMT and pregnancy, implantation, miscarriage, live birth or ongoing pregnancy and ectopic pregnancy rates in individuals after IVF were identified on PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library (from their inception up to December 2018). Pooled odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals, calculated using the random-effects model, were used. RESULTS: Nine prospective and 21 retrospective studies, including a total of 88,056 cycles, were retrieved. The summary odds ratios indicated that women with lower EMT were associated with lower pregnancy rates than those with higher EMT (n = 30, OR 0.61; 95% CI 0.52 to 0.70; P < 0.001). Moreover, the implantation rate in women with lower EMT was significantly reduced (n = 9, OR 0.49; 95% CI 0.32 to 0.74; P = 0.001). Furthermore, no significant association was found between EMT and the miscarriage rate (n = 12). In addition, women with lower EMT were associated with reduced live birth or ongoing pregnancy rate (11 studies, OR 0.60; 95% CI 0.48 to 0.73; P < 0.001). Finally, the incidence of ectopic pregnancy rate between lower and higher EMT showed no statistically significant association (n = 3). CONCLUSIONS: Lower EMT was associated with lower pregnancy, implantation and live birth or ongoing pregnancy rates.

RESUMO

Formic acid (or formate) is suggested to be one of the most economically viable products from electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction. However, its commercial viability hinges on the development of highly active and selective electrocatalysts. Here we report that structural defects have a profound positive impact on the electrocatalytic performance of bismuth. Bismuth oxide double-walled nanotubes with fragmented surface are prepared as a template, and are cathodically converted to defective bismuth nanotubes. This converted electrocatalyst enables carbon dioxide reduction to formate with excellent activity, selectivity and stability. Most significantly, its current density reaches ~288 mA cm-2 at -0.61 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode within a flow cell reactor under ambient conditions. Using density functional theory calculations, the excellent activity and selectivity are rationalized as the outcome of abundant defective bismuth sites that stabilize the *OCHO intermediate. Furthermore, this electrocatalyst is coupled with silicon photocathodes and achieves high-performance photoelectrochemical carbon dioxide reduction.

RESUMO

The fouling and stability are two most critical limiting factors for practical applications of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based microfluidic electrophoresis device. Herein, we present a novel biomimetic nanoengineering strategy to achieve a SERS substrate featuring antifouling ability, good stability, and reliable quantitative capability. Typically, by employing tea polyphenol as the reducing agent, the substrate made of silver core-gold shell nanostructures in situ grown on silicon wafer surface is fabricated. The core-shell nanostructures are further embedded with internal standard molecules. Remarkably, the fabricated substrate preserves distinct SERS effects, adaptable reproducibility, and reliable quantitative ability even if the substrate is incubated with 15% H2 O2 , 13% HNO3 , or 108  CFU/mL bacteria, or suffered from 12-day continuous vibration at 250 rpm/min in PBS buffer. As a proof-of-concept application, the DNA-functionalized substrate is capable of precise quantification of Hg2+ with a limit of detection down to ca. 1 pM even in sewage water.

RESUMO

Li-CO2 batteries represent an attractive solution for electrochemical energy storage by utilizing atmospheric CO2 as the energy carrier. However, their practical viability critically depends on the development of efficient and low-cost cathode catalysts for the reversible formation and decomposition of Li2 CO3 . Here, the great potential of a structurally engineered polymer is demonstrated as the cathode catalyst for rechargeable Li-CO2 batteries. Conjugated cobalt polyphthalocyanine is prepared via a facile microwave heating method. Due to the crosslinked network, it is intrinsically elastic and has improved chemical, physical, and mechanical stability. Electrochemical measurements show that cobalt polyphthalocyanine facilitates the reversible formation and decomposition of Li2 CO3 , and therefore enables high-performance Li-CO2 batteries with large areal capacity and impressive cycling performance. In addition, the elastic and reprocessable property of the polymeric catalyst renders it possible to fabricate flexible batteries.

RESUMO

There currently exists increasing concerns on the development of a kind of high-performance SERS platform, which is suitable for sensing applications ranging from the molecular to cellular (e.g., bacteria) level. Herein, we develop a novel kind of universal SERS chip, made of graphene (G)-silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-silicon (Si) sandwich nanohybrids (G@AgNPs@Si), in which AgNPs are in situ grown on a silicon wafer through hydrofluoric acid-etching-assisted chemical reduction, followed by coating with single-layer graphene via a polymer-protective etching method. The resultant chip features a strong, stable, reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect and reliable quantitative capability. By virtues of these merits, the G@AgNPs@Si platform is capable for not only molecular detection and quantification but also cellular analysis in real systems. As a proof-of-concept application, the chip allows ultrahigh sensitive and reliable detection of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), with a detection limit of ∼1 pM. In addition, the chip, serving as a novel multifunctional platform, enables simultaneous capture, discrimination, and inactivation of bacteria. Typically, the bacterial capture efficiency is 54% at 108 CFU mL-1 bacteria, and the antibacterial rate reaches 93% after 24 h of treatment. Of particular note, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus spiked into blood can be readily distinguished via the chip, suggesting its high potential for clinical applications.

RESUMO

Fluorescent imaging techniques for visualization of nuclear structure and function in live cells are fundamentally important for exploring major cellular events. The ideal cellular labeling method is capable of realizing label-free, in situ, real-time, and long-term nucleus labeling in live cells, which can fully obtain the nucleus-relative information and effectively alleviate negative effects of alien probes on cellular metabolism. However, current established fluorescent probes-based strategies (e.g., fluorescent proteins-, organic dyes-, fluorescent organic/inorganic nanoparticles-based imaging techniques) are unable to simultaneously realize label-free, in situ, long-term, and real-time nucleus labeling, resulting in inevitable difficulties in fully visualizing nuclear structure and function in live cells. To this end, we present a type of bioinspired fluorescent probes, which are highly efficacious for in situ and label-free tracking of nucleus in long-term and real-time manners. Typically, the bioinspired polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles, served as fluorescent probes, can be readily synthesized in situ within live cell nucleus without any further modifications under physiological conditions (37 °C, pH ∼7.4). Compared with other conventional nuclear dyes (e.g., propidium iodide (PI), Hoechst), superior spectroscopic properties (e.g., quantum yield of ∼35.8% and high photostability) and low cytotoxicity of PDA-based probes enable long-term (e.g., 3 h) fluorescence tracking of nucleus. We also demonstrate the generality of this type of bioinspired fluorescent probes in different cell lines and complex biological samples.
