RESUMO

Fopius arisanus (Sonan), an egg-pupal parasitoid of numerous fruit fly species, was recently introduced into Africa for the control of the Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel). In this study, life-table data of F. arisanus were generated under laboratory conditions at six constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 28 and 35 °C; 75% RH, L12:D12 photoperiod) and under variable conditions in a screenhouse on B. dorsalis. Several non-linear functions were fitted to model species development, mortality, longevity and oviposition using the Insect Life Cycle Modeling (ILCYM) software. The established phenology models were stochastically simulated at variable temperatures to estimate the life table parameters. Fopius arisanus completed development from egg to adult at all the temperatures tested except at 35 °C. Mean developmental time from egg to adult was inversely proportional to the temperature. The minimum temperature threshold (Tmin) from egg to adult was 8.15 °C, while the maximum temperature threshold (Tmax) was estimated at 34.2 °C. The optimal temperature for immature stages survival was predicted for 20-30 °C. The optimum fecundity estimated was 251 eggs/female at 22 °C. Following the stochastic simulations under natural conditions of the selected agro-ecological zones, it appears that the Humid Forest with Bimodal Rainfall provides a suitable thermal condition for potential population growth of F. arisanus. The present study shows the importance of temperature on the demographic parameters of F. arisanus. Implications of present findings on the biological control of B. dorsalis under climate change scenarios is discussed.

Fopius arisanus (Sonan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a koinobiont solitary parasitoid of various fruit flies, particularly those in the genus Bactrocera. Researchers introduced F. arisanus into Africa for the biological control of Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), a pest of a wide range of fruit trees and vegetables. However, the suitability of host fruit species as egg-laying substrates for parasitoid development remains poorly investigated in tropical Africa. The present study examines the preference and performance of F. arisanus on B. dorsalis reared on eleven fruit species through laboratory choice-test trials. We assessed the oviposition activity, parasitism rate, developmental time, and offspring fitness of F. arisanus on nine cultivated and two wild host fruits species. Oviposition attempts were higher on Psidium guajava (L.) (Myrtales: Myrtaceae) and Mangifera indica (L.) (Sapindales: Anacardiaceae) than on the other host fruits tested. The wasp parasitized host eggs in P. guajava in no-choice experiments. Psidium guajava, Irvingia wombulu (Vermoesen) (Malpighiales: Irvingiaceae), and Irvingia gabonensis (Aubry_Lecomte) Baill (Malpighiales: Irvingiaceae) were suitable for parasitism in choice tests. Of all host fruits tested, the body and hind tibia lengths of both parasitoid sexes emerging from M. indica were longer than on the others. The female ovipositor was long on Annona squamosa (L.) (Magnoliales: annonaceae) and short on Eribotrya japonica ([Thunb.] Lindl.; Rosales: Rosaceae). We obtained the longest preimaginal developmental time for both sexes on E. japonica and the shortest for females and males on Carica papaya (L.) (Brassicales: Caricaceae). These results demonstrate the ability of some tested fruit species to serve for the permanent establishment of F. arisanus in the field.

The real impact of true bug damage on cocoa pods has never been assessed precisely. We conducted a 2-yr study on 1,080 cocoa trees on 36 farms in Cameroon to assess the contribution of true bugs to fruit mortality and production loss. The cocoa fruiting cycle, fruit mortality, and damage caused by true bugs as well as other pests and diseases were monitored on a weekly basis. True bug damage also was described on 2,500 ripe pods per year. Pod weight, bean number, and bean weight were measured and compared for different degrees and types of damage on the ripe pods. Our results showed that true bugs were the main external cause of young fruit abortion. They reduced the abundance of young fruit by up to 10%. In contrast, although one-third of the ripe pods sampled had true bug lesions, only 4% were moderately to heavily damaged. The mean weight of ripe pods was reduced by 12% when there was medium to heavy damage. While the mean weight of wet beans was reduced significantly (by 3-10%), the number of beans per pod was not changed by damage. Despite the reduction in mean weight, the overall weight of beans for the pods sampled was reduced by <2%. Therefore, our study confirmed the common assumption that the economic impact of true bug damage on mature pods is negligible on cocoa farms in Cameroon. However, true bugs have a significant impact on young fruit mortality.

This article documents the addition of 473 microsatellite marker loci and 71 pairs of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Barteria fistulosa, Bombus morio, Galaxias platei, Hematodinium perezi, Macrocentrus cingulum Brischke (a.k.a. M. abdominalis Fab., M. grandii Goidanich or M. gifuensis Ashmead), Micropogonias furnieri, Nerita melanotragus, Nilaparvata lugens Stål, Sciaenops ocellatus, Scomber scombrus, Spodoptera frugiperda and Turdus lherminieri. These loci were cross-tested on the following species: Barteria dewevrei, Barteria nigritana, Barteria solida, Cynoscion acoupa, Cynoscion jamaicensis, Cynoscion leiarchus, Cynoscion nebulosus, Cynoscion striatus, Cynoscion virescens, Macrodon ancylodon, Menticirrhus americanus, Nilaparvata muiri and Umbrina canosai. This article also documents the addition of 116 sequencing primer pairs for Dicentrarchus labrax.

In this survey conducted in southern Cameroon, we compared ant-Hemiptera associations on plantations treated with insecticides, on plantations 2 years after insecticide treatments ceased, and on control lots that never received insecticide treatments. By eliminating arboreal-nesting ants, insecticides favored the presence of "ecologically dominant" ground-nesting, arboreal-foraging species that occupied the tree crowns. The reinstallation of arboreal ants was slow as 2 yr after insecticide treatment ceased differences with the control lots were significant. This intermediary period also illustrated that arboreal ants can found and develop colonies on trees occupied by ground-nesting species. Certain arboreal species were more frequent during this intermediary period than on the control lots, showing that the period of installation in the trees was followed by competition between arboreal ants. We confirm that ground-nesting ants tend a wide range of hemipteran families, including well known agricultural pests, whereas arboreal ants, particularly dominant species, were mostly associated with Coccidae and Stictococcidae that do not pose problems to the supporting trees. A tree effect was also noted for both ant and hemipteran distribution. We concluded that because of insecticide use, ground-nesting ants pose problems through their associated Hemiptera. On the contrary, dominant arboreal ants, strong predators, benefit their supporting trees by excluding ground-nesting species and tending mostly nonpest Hemiptera. Nevertheless, certain of them, carpenter species or species likely to tend Pseudococcidae, have to be eliminated through integrated management.

In order to assess the relative contributions of innate attraction and environmentally-induced preference to nest plant selection by the obligate plant-ant Tetraponera aethiops, we submitted both mature and callow workers to paired choice tests using the leaves of four plant species, including their natural host plant Barteria fistulosa. Mature workers taken from nature as well as mature workers after 25 days of laboratory breeding (with or without contact with B. fifstulosa leaves) always showed a great preference for shelters made with the leaves of B. fistulosa. Similar results were obtained with callow workers isolated from any plant material during the first 25 days of imaginal (=adult) life or during pre-imaginal development. But those reared in contact with test-plant leaves for the same two periods showed significantly less preference for B. fistulosa than did the controls. As a result, experience gained during the larval and nymphal stages as well as during the first part of adult life (i.e. pre-imaginal as well as early learning) was demonstrated in T. aethiops, but in this situation of species-specific interaction it reinforces innate attraction as both larvae and adults live in contact with B. fistulosa in nature. These results are discussed in comparison with previous data collected on arboreal ants not specifically paired with a plant, for which an environmentally-induced preference can supplant innate attraction.
