Ri chicken is the most popular backyard chicken breed in Vietnam, but little is known about the growth curve of this breed. This study compared the performances of models with three parameters (Gompertz, Brody, and Logistic) and models containing four parameters (Richards, Bridges, and Janoschek) for describing the growth of Ri chicken. The bodyweight of Ri chicken was recorded weekly from week 1 to week 19. Growth models were fitted using minpack.lm package in R software and Akaike’s information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used for model comparison. Based on these criteria, the models having four parameters showed better performance than the ones with three parameters, and the Richards model was the best one for males and females. The lowest and highest value of asymmetric weights (α) were obtained by Bridges and Brody models for each of sexes, respectively. Age and weight estimated by the Richard model were 8.46 and 7.51 weeks and 696.88 and 487.58 g for males and for females, respectively. Differences in the growth curves were observed between males and female chicken. Overall, the results suggested using the Richards model for describing the growth curve of Ri chickens. Further studies on the genetics and genomics of the obtained growth parameters are required before using them for the genetic improvement of Ri chickens.


O frango Ri é a raça de frango de quintal mais popular do Vietnã, mas pouco se sabe sobre a curva de crescimento dessa raça. Este estudo comparou o desempenho de modelos com três parâmetros (Gompertz, Brody e Logistic) e modelos contendo quatro parâmetros (Richards, Bridges e Janoschek) para descrever o crescimento do frango Ri. O peso corporal do frango Ri foi registrado semanalmente da semana 1 à semana 19. AIMS: This cross-sectional study aims to extend the preliminary validation of the Feeding Practices and Structure Questionnaire (FPSQ) and Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ) in the Vietnamese context by examining associations between maternal feeding practices, child eating behaviours, and child weight status. METHODS: Modified versions of the FPSQ and CEBQ were used to measure maternal feeding practices and child eating behaviours, respectively, in a sample of Vietnamese mothers of children within the age range of two to five years (n = 100). Children's weight-for-height z-scores (WHZs) were calculated using weight and height measurements obtained by clinicians. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to examine bivariate associations between maternal feeding practices, child eating behaviours, and child WHZs. Significant variables were then entered into a multivariable regression model. RESULTS: Child WHZs were associated with maternal persuasive feeding, and child slowness in eating, enjoyment of food/food responsiveness, and emotional undereating, but in multivariable regression analysis, only persuasive feeding (ß = -0.44, p = 0.027) and slowness in eating (ß = -0.39, p = 0.036) contributed significantly to the model. CONCLUSIONS: The findings provide some evidence of construct validity for the modified questionnaires. Potential implications of dietary-related behaviours on weight status in preschool-aged children in Viet Nam are evident. However, further validation and analysis in larger datasets must be undertaken in order to examine these associations with increased certainty.

OBJECTIVE: This preliminary pilot study aims to explore the use of the Feeding Practices and Structure Questionnaire (FPSQ) and Children's Eating Behaviour Question (CEBQ) in a sample of Vietnamese mothers. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the FPSQ and CEBQ were collected from a convenience sample of mothers (n = 102) who attended the Ho Chi Minh City Nutrition Centre in Viet Nam. Mothers had at least one child aged 2-5 years. The reliability of the questionnaire subscales was tested using Cronbach's alpha coefficients. Face validity was assessed using dialogue from a translation-back-translation procedure undertaken by an expert committee, and cognitive interviews conducted in a subsample of mothers (n = 6). Based on these findings, exploratory factor analyses (EFAs) were performed to assess the underlying structures of both questionnaires in this sample. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the original questionnaires ranged from 0.23 to 0.92. Limitations in translation and comprehension of items surfaced, warranting modifications of the questionnaires, which were subsequently examined using EFA. EFA of the FPSQ and CEBQ revealed a six-factor structure with 23 items, and a six-factor structure with 27 items, respectively, which were interpretable solutions for this sample. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were >0.70 for all subscales in the revised questionnaires. CONCLUSIONS: Modified versions of the FPSQ and CEBQ are proposed for use in Viet Nam. However, prior to their use, further reliability and validity testing must be undertaken in larger samples, including assessment of test-retest reliability and construct validity, as well as confirmatory factor analysis to verify the proposed factor structures.

High blood cholesterol concentration, mainly caused by high dietary cholesterol, is a potential risk factor for human health. Dairy products are important sources of human dietary cholesterol intake. Therefore, monitoring bovine milk cholesterol concentration is important for human health benefit. Genetic selection for improvement of cow milk cholesterol content requires understanding of the genetics of milk cholesterol. For this purpose, we performed analyses of additive and dominance effects of 126 potentially functional SNPs within 43 candidate genes with milk cholesterol content [expressed as mg of cholesterol in 100 g of fat (CHL_fat) or in 100 mg of milk (CHL_milk)]. The additive and dominance effects of SNPs rs380643365 in AGPAT1 (P = 0.04) and rs134357240 in SOAT1 (P = 0.035) genes associated significantly with CHL_fat. Moreover, five (rs109326954 and rs523413537 in DGAT1, rs109376747 in LDLR, rs42781651 in FAM198B and rs109967779 in ACAT2) and four (rs137347384 in RBM19, rs109376747 in LDLR, rs42016945 in PPARG and rs110862179 in SCAP) SNPs were significantly associated with CHL_milk (P < 0.05) based on additive and dominance effect analyses respectively. Rs109326954 and rs523413537 in DGAT1 explained a considerable portion of the phenotypic variance of CHL_milk (7.54 and 6.84% respectively), and might be useful in selection programs for reduced milk cholesterol content. Several significantly associated SNPs were in genes (such as ACAT2 and LDLR) involved in cholesterol metabolism in the liver or cholesterol transport, suggesting multiple mechanisms regulating milk cholesterol content. Nine and seven SNPs identified by additive or dominance effect analyses associated significantly with milk yield and fat yield respectively. Further analyses are required to better understand the consequences of these variants and their potential use in genomic selection of the studied traits.

Lactation persistency (LP), defined as the rate of declining milk yield after milk peak, is an economically important trait for dairy cattle. Improving LP is considered a good alternative method for increasing overall milk production because it does not cause the negative energy balance and other health issues that cows experience during peak milk production. However, little is known about the biology of LP. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) and pathway enrichment were used to explore the genetic mechanisms underlying LP. The GWAS was performed using a univariate regression mixed linear model on LP data of 3,796 cows and 44,100 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). Eight and 47 SNP were significantly and suggestively associated with LP, respectively. The 2 most important quantitative trait loci regions for LP were (1) a region from 106 to 108 Mb on Bos taurus autosome (BTA) 5, where the most significant SNP (ARS-BFGL-NGS-2399) was located and also formed a linkage disequilibrium block with 3 other SNP; and (2) a region from 29.3 to 31.3 Mb on BTA 20, which contained 3 significant SNP. Based on physical positions, MAN1C1, MAP3K5, HCN1, TSPAN9, MRPS30, TEX14, and CCL28 are potential candidate genes for LP because the significant SNP were located in their intronic regions. Enrichment analyses of a list of 536 genes in 0.5-Mb flanking regions of significant and suggestive SNP indicates that synthesis of milk components, regulation of cell apoptosis processes and insulin, and prolactin signaling pathways are important for LP. Upstream regulators relevant for LP positional candidate genes were prolactin (PRL), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG), and Erb-B2 receptor tyrosine kinase 2 (ERBB2). Several networks related to cellular development, proliferation and death were significantly enriched for LP positional candidate genes. In conclusion, this study detected several SNP, genes, and interesting regions for fine mapping and validation of candidate genes and SNP for potential use in selection for improved LP. This study also provided further insights on the biology of LP which will help to prioritize selected candidate genes for functional validation and application.

Feed intake, feed efficiency, and weight gain are important economic traits of beef cattle in feedlots. In the present study, we investigated the physiological processes underlying such traits from the point of view of systems genetics. Firstly, using data from 1334 Nellore (Bos indicus) cattle and 943,577 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), a genome-wide association analysis was performed for dry matter intake, average daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and residual feed intake with a Bayesian Lasso procedure. Genes within 50-kb SNPs, most relevant for explaining the genomic variance, were annotated and the biological processes underlying the traits were inferred from Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases. Our results indicated several putative genomic regions associated with the target phenotypes and showed that almost all genomic variances were in the SNPs located in the intergenic and intronic regions. We further identified five main metabolic pathways related to ion transport, body composition, and feed intake control, which influenced the four phenotypes simultaneously. The systems genetics approach used in this study revealed novel pathways related to feed efficiency traits in beef cattle.

The study investigated genetic architecture and predictive ability using genomic annotation of residual feed intake (RFI) and its component traits (daily feed intake [DFI], ADG, and back fat [BF]). A total of 1,272 Duroc pigs had both genotypic and phenotypic records, and the records were split into a training (968 pigs) and a validation dataset (304 pigs) by assigning records as before and after January 1, 2012, respectively. SNP were annotated by 14 different classes using Ensembl variant effect prediction. Predictive accuracy and prediction bias were calculated using Bayesian Power LASSO, Bayesian A, B, and Cπ, and genomic BLUP (GBLUP) methods. Predictive accuracy ranged from 0.508 to 0.531, 0.506 to 0.532, 0.276 to 0.357, and 0.308 to 0.362 for DFI, RFI, ADG, and BF, respectively. BayesCπ100.1 increased accuracy slightly compared to the GBLUP model and other methods. The contribution per SNP to total genomic variance was similar among annotated classes across different traits. Predictive performance of SNP classes did not significantly differ from randomized SNP groups. Genomic prediction has accuracy comparable to observed phenotype, and use of genomic prediction can be cost effective by replacing feed intake measurement. Genomic annotation had less impact on predictive accuracy traits considered here but may be different for other traits. It is the first study to provide useful insights into biological classes of SNP driving the whole genomic prediction for complex traits in pigs.

The study characterized genetic diversity and genetic structure of five indigenous pig populations (Ha Lang, Muong Te, Mong Cai, Lung and Lung Pu), two wild pig populations (Vietnamese and Thai wild pigs) and an exotic pig breed (Yorkshire) using FAO/ISAG recommended 16 microsatellite markers in 236 samples. All estimated loci were very polymorphic indicated by high values of polymorphism information content (from 0.76 in S0225 to 0.92 in Sw2410). Indigenous populations had very high level of genetic diversity (mean He = 0.75); of all indigenous breeds, Lung Pu showed highest mean number of alleles (MNA = 10.1), gene diversity (He = 0.82), allele richness (5.33) and number of private alleles (10). Thirteen percentage of the total genetic variation observed was due to differences among populations. The neighbour-joining dendrogram obtained from Nei's standard genetic distance differentiated eight populations into four groups including Yorkshire, two wild populations, Mong Cai population and a group of four other indigenous populations. The Bayesian clustering with the admixture model implemented in Structure 2.1 indicated seven possible homogenous clusters among eight populations. From 79% (Ha Lang) to 98% (Mong Cai). individuals in indigenous pigs were assigned to their own populations. The results confirmed high level of genetic diversity and shed a new light on genetic structure of Vietnam indigenous pig populations.

Residual feed intake (RFI) is commonly used as a measure of feed efficiency at a given level of production. A total of 16,872 pigs with their pedigree traced back as far as possible was used to estimate genetic parameters for RFI, growth performance, food conversion ratio (FCR), body conformation, and feeding behavior traits in 3 Danish breeds [Duroc (DD), Landrace (LL), and Yorkshire (YY)]. Two measures of RFI were considered: residual feed intake 1 (RFI1) was calculated based on regression of daily feed intake (DFI) from 30 to 100 kg on initial test weight and ADG from 30 to 100 kg (ADG2). Residual feed intake 2 (RFI2) was as RFI1, except it was also regressed with respect to backfat (BF). The estimated heritabilities for RFI1 and RFI2 were 0.34 and 0.38 in DD, 0.34 and 0.36 in LL, and 0.39 and 0.40 in YY, respectively. The heritabilities ranged from 0.32 (DD) to 0.54 (LL) for ADG2, from 0.54 (DD) to 0.67 (LL) for BF, and from 0.13 (DD) to 0.19 (YY) for body conformation. Feeding behavior traits including DFI, number of visits to feeder per day (NVD), total time spent eating per day (TPD), feed intake rate (FR), feed intake per visit (FPV), and time spent eating per visit (TPV) were moderately to highly heritable. Residual feed intake 2 was genetically independent of ADG2 and BF in all breeds, except it had low genetic correlation to ADG2 in YY (0.2). Residual feed intake 1 was also genetically independent of ADG2 in DD and LL. Both RFI traits had strong genetic correlations with DFI (0.85 to 0.96) and FCR (0.76 to 0.99). They had low or no genetic correlations with feeding behavior traits. Unfavorable genetic correlations were found between ADG2 and both BF and DFI. Among feeding behavior traits, DFI had low genetic correlations to other traits in all breeds. High and negative genetic correlations were also found between TPD with FR (-0.79 in YY to -0.88 in DD), NVD, and TPD (-0.91 in DD to -0.94 in YY) and between NVD and FPV (-0.83 in DD to -0.91 in YY) in all breeds. The genetic trend for feed efficiency was favorable in all breeds regardless of the definition of feed efficiency used. In summary, RFI1 and RFI2 were heritable and selection for reduced RFI2 can be performed without adversely affecting ADG and BF and could replace FCR in the selection index for the Danish pig breeds. Selection could also be based on RFI1 for breeds with fewer concerns about a negative effect of BF or for breeds that do not have BF records.
