RESUMO

Previous studies evaluating the morphology of the selected retinal layers in schizophrenia showed abnormalities regarding macular thickness, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNLF), and ganglion cell complex (GCC). Concurrently, accumulating neuroimaging results suggest that structural alterations of the brain in this disease might be an effect of accelerated aging. Referring to these findings, we aimed to determine whether the thinning of the retinal layers assessed with the optic coherence tomography (OCT) in a group of schizophrenia patients (n = 60) presents a significant age-related decrease exceeding potential changes noted in the control group (n = 61). Samples of patients and controls were divided into three age subgroups, namely, younger, middle-aged, and older participants. OCT outcomes, such as macular thickness and volume, macular RNFL, peripapillary RNFL, and GCC, were analyzed concerning a diagnosis status (controls vs. patients) and age subgroups. Additionally, associations between retinal parameters, age, and selected cognitive functions were evaluated. post-hoc tests revealed that macular thickness and volume in patients undergo significant age-dependent thinning, which was not observed in the control group. Regression analyses confirmed the association between macular morphology and age. Selected speed-dependent cognitive functions in patients decreased significantly with age, and these features were also significantly associated with some OCT outcomes also after controlling for antipsychotic treatment. Our results suggest that reduced measures of retinal structure detected in schizophrenia may be an effect of accelerated aging; however, further research is needed using computational solutions derived from brain imaging studies based on large datasets covering representatives of all age groups.

The main aim of the paper was to assess whether the lightweight concrete with a new type of sintered fly ash aggregate can be used as a structural material for post-tensioned elements subject to high effort. This purpose was achieved by comparison of the properties of lightweight aggregate concrete with Certyd aggregate (LWAC) and normal-weight concrete with dolomite aggregate (NWAC) of similar strength in terms of their suitability for use in prestressed members. Special emphasis was placed on long-term, relatively rarely performed tests of rheological properties such as shrinkage and creep. The research was conducted on standard specimens as well as on plain and post-tensioned beams of bigger scale, which could reflect better the behavior of the materials in a destined type of structural members. The carried out tests showed that, despite the expected lower density and modulus of elasticity, LWAC revealed comparable tensile strength and lower shrinkage and creep in the whole time of observations (ca 1.5 years) in comparison to NWAC. Moreover, the total loss of prestressing force for beams made of LWAC was slightly lower than for NWAC. Estimations of tensile strength and modulus of elasticity values according to the standard Eurocode EN-1992-1-1 for both concrete types turned out to be satisfactory. However, the rheological properties of the tested lightweight concrete seemed to be considerably overestimated.

The dynamic modulus of elasticity (Ed), specified by ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements, is often used, especially for concrete built into construction, to estimate the static modulus of elasticity (Ec,s). However, the most commonly used Equations for such estimations do not take into account the influence of concrete moisture. The aim of this paper was to establish this influence for two series of structural lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) varying in their strength (40.2 and 54.3 MPa) and density (1690 and 1780 kg/m3). The effect of LWAC moisture content turned out to be much more pronounced in the case of dynamic modulus measurements than for static ones. The achieved results indicate that the moisture content of the concrete should be taken into consideration in modulus measurements as well as in Equations estimating Ec,s on the basis of Ed specified by the ultrasonic pulse velocity method. The static modulus of LWACs was lower on average by 11 and 24% in relation to dynamic modulus, respectively when measured in air-dried and water-saturated conditions. The influence of LWAC moisture content on the relationship between specified static and dynamic moduli was not affected by the type of tested lightweight concrete.

One of the biggest technological problems connected with the production of lightweight concretes made of porous aggregates is their much higher water absorption, which may cause on the one hand workability loss, and on the other hand excess water content in concrete. The aim of this research was to assess the effect of impregnation of lightweight aggregates (LWAs) with cement paste on their properties and to verify its effectiveness in concretes. Three types of lightweight aggregates differing in porosity and pore structure (sintered fly ash Lytag, expanded clay: Leca and Liapor) were selected for the tests. The following parameters were taken into consideration in the research program: LWA type and size, LWA initial moisture content, strength, and rheology of cement pastes. The tests of 22 different aggregates, plain and coated with cement paste, included density, crushing strength, and development of water absorption in time. The research program proved that porous aggregates, due to their impregnation with cement pastes, may be effectively sealed and strengthened. All tested LWAs showed a considerable decrease in water absorption by up to 71%. However, only Lytag aggregate showed a visibly enhanced crushing strength. Verification of effectiveness of aggregate sealing on the enhancement of concrete properties showed both a considerable reduction in water absorption of composites (by up to 52%) and a very high increase in their strength (by up to 107%).

The impregnation of lightweight aggregate (LWA) is an alternative method to its pre-moistening, which is used to limit the loss of fresh concrete workability due to the aggregate's ability to absorb a great amount of mixing water. The aim of this study was to access the effectiveness, by pre-coating LWAs with cement paste, in modifying the properties of concrete composites. Two types of lightweight aggregates (Lytag and Leca) characterized with a relatively open-structure shell were selected. The other changeable parameters taken into consideration in this research were: LWA size, initial moisture of aggregate before the impregnation process and type of cement paste applied as an impregnant. Sixteen concretes prepared with pre-moistened and pre-coated lightweight aggregates were subject to a density test in different moisture conditions, a water absorption test and a compressive strength test. On the one hand, the pre-coating of LWAs with cement paste resulted in a relatively slight increase in concrete density (by up to 19%) compared to the pre-moistening of LWAs. On the other hand, it caused a very significant reduction (by up to 52%) in the composite's water absorption and an incomparably greater growth (by up to 107%) in compressive strength. The most crucial factors determining the effectiveness of impregnation of LWAs with cement pastes in improvement of composite properties were the aggregate type and its size. The composition of impregnating slurry and the initial moisture content of LWA before pre-coating also mattered.

The aim of this study was to present the problem of durability of structural lightweight concrete made of a sintered fly ash aggregate. The issue of durability was researched for 12 concrete series in terms of their water absorption, water permeability, and freeze-thaw resistance. Additionally, the microstructure of several concretes was analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). In the durability research, the influences of the following parameters were taken into consideration: The initial moisture content of sintered fly ash (mc = 0, 17-18, and 24-25%); the aggregate grading (4/8 and 6/12 mm); and the water-cement ratio (w/c = 0.55 and 0.37). As a result of various compositions, the concretes revealed different properties. The density ranged from 1470 to 1920 kg/m3, and the corresponding strength ranged from 25.0 to 83.5 MPa. The durability research results of tested lightweight concretes showed that, despite considerably higher water absorption, a comparable water permeability and comparable or better freeze-thaw resistance in relation to normal-weight concrete may be present. Nevertheless, the fundamental requirement of lightweight concrete to achieve good durability requires the aggregate's initial moisture content to be limited and a sufficiently tight cement matrix to be selected. The volume share of the cement matrix and aggregate, the cement content, and even the concrete strength are of secondary importance.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the unrecognized problem of the scale effect in compressive strength tests determined for cored specimens of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) against the background of available data on the effect for normal-weight concrete (NWAC). The scale effect was analyzed taking into consideration the influence of slenderness (λ = 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) and diameter (d = 80, 100, 125, and 150 mm) of cored specimens, as well as the type of lightweight aggregate (expanded clay and sintered fly ash) and the type of cement matrix (w/c = 0.55 and 0.37). The analysis of the results for four lightweight aggregate concretes revealed no scale effect in compressive strength tests determined on cored specimens. Neither the slenderness, nor the core diameter seemed to affect the strength results. This fact should be explained by the considerably better structural homogeneity of the tested lightweight concretes in comparison to normal-weight ones. Nevertheless, there were clear differences between the results obtained on molded and cored specimens of the same shape and size.

UNLABELLED: Phenylketonuria (OMIM 261600) is a congenital genetically conditioned error of metabolism phenylalanine to tyrosine. Being untreated or insufficiently treated phenylketonuria (PKU) sometimes leads to irreversible damage of mielin. Similarly, high phenylalanine concentration in the blood of pregnant woman with PKU exert the teratogenic effect on growing and developing foetus (in the majority of cases being the carrier of PKU), which leads to appearance of maternal phenylketonuria syndrom (MPKU syndrom). The features of MPKU syndrome consist: low weight at birth, the congenital heart defects, digestive tract defects, osseous arrangements, microcephaly, handicap of intellectual development. Spontaneous miscarriages at pregnant women with PKU are more often. THE AIM OF WORK: the evaluation of influence hyperphenylalaninemia of pregnant woman with PKU on her foetus, depending on the metabolic control in the pre- and postconception period. MATERIAL AND METHOD: under the care of Outpatient Metabolic Clinic of University Children's Hospital in Cracow remain 430 patients aged from 0 to 56 years with hyperphenylalaninemia. In the register of Outpatient Metabolic Clinic there are the data about 50 pregnancies of 21 women with hyperphylalaninemia (from mild hyperphenylalaninemia to classic PKU). Only 10 pregnancies were planned - the low-phenylalanine diet was obligatory introduced 3 months before conception and was applied throughout the whole period of pregnancy in order to maintain the levels of phenylalanine in the range of 2 to 6 mg/dl. One pregnancy finished with spontaneous miscarriage, the other 9- the birth of healthy offspring. By contrast, out of 40 unplanned pregnancies 8 ended in spontaneous miscarriage, and of the remaining 32 unplanned pregnancies 33 children were born: 24 (75%) newborns with the maternal PKU features, 1 child died during thel-st year of life, 3 have the lack of any data, and only 5 (15.6%) children were born clinically healthy (1 twin birth). Among the children with maternal PKU syndrome: microcephaly was diagnosed in 17 cases, congenital heart defect and microcephaly in 6 children, and microcephaly and the anal atresia in 1 child. Among the children, born from unplanned pregnancies, there are two (twins), whose mother from the 6 week of gestation had returned to applying diet (average phe levels 6.37 mg/dl); two children of mothers who were conducting the therapeutic implemented since 18-th and 32-th weeks of gestation (average phe 7.5 mg/dl) (there is the lack of detailed data about these children, because the women are never reported to our Outpatient Clinic), and one child, whose mother raised and began the therapy from 12-th week of gestation (average phe levels 10.37 mg/dl), who presents the features of ADHD syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: 1. All pregnancies of women with hyperphenylalaninemia should be planned to avoid the complications in the form of maternal PKU syndrom. 2. It is essential to educate the women with PKU and their families about the problems concerning maternal PKU. 3. It is also necessary to inform pediatricians, family physicians and gynaecologists-obstetricians about the features of maternal PKU syndrom.
