RESUMO

PURPOSE: The inclusion of interprofessional education (IPE) is essential for the health professions curricula and establishes the expectation of collaborative patient-centered care. The COVID-19 pandemic has required educators to develop innovative methods for IPE student engagement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a college-based virtual IPE activity for first-year health profession students and measure their interprofessional socialization and values (ISVS) toward IPE teams. The validated interprofessional socialization and valuing scales (ISVS-9A/9B) were used. METHODS: A one-group pre-post-test design examined health profession students' ISVS from seven health programs before and after a virtual IPE activity. The IPE activity was a case-study grounded in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) core competencies that addressed each of the student learners' professional roles. RESULTS: A total of 244 students and 122 students completed the ISVS-9A/9B, respectively. A significant increase in the average total ISVS-9A/9B scores was observed among all student learners for 85 matched pairs (5.27 ± 1.11 vs 5.56 ± 1.02, p=0.01). Participating students generally found the activity valuable to their learning. CONCLUSIONS: The virtual composition of the IPE activity reduced logistical barriers and allowed for collaboration and awareness among students. Virtual IPE activities may be the cornerstone for interdisciplinary student engagement.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the sex- and age-specific trends of stunting and combined overweight with stunting among schoolchildren over a 13-year period in Kuwait. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The Kuwait Nutrition Surveillance System objectively measured the height of 172,573 schoolchildren (5-19 years) over a 13-year period (2007-2019). Data on gender and date of birth were extracted from school records. Stunting was defined as height 2 standard deviations (SD) below the World Health Organization growth reference median. Logistic regression models were used to examine the trends of stunting over the study period while stratifying by gender. RESULTS: In males, the prevalence of stunting increased from 2.46% in 2007 to 4.18% in 2019 (p for trend <0.001). In females, the prevalence of stunting fluctuated but remained around 3.80% in both 2007 and 2019. The odds of stunting significantly increased in the period 2017-2019 compared to the period 2007-2010 among males, adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 1.04 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-1.76); p = 0.009, but not females, AOR 0.89 (95% CI: 0.73-1.07); p = 0.176. Although not statistically significant, there was a tendency for the odds of combined overweight with stunting to increase in males, AOR 1.65 (95% CI: 0.90-3.04); p = 0.087, but not females, AOR 1.13 (95% CI: 0.88-1.45); p = 0.248. CONCLUSION: Although the prevalence of stunting and combined stunting with overweight is low, there is an emerging upward trend in schoolboys that warrants further investigation and monitoring. This highlights the need for gender-specific interventions to reduce nutritional abnormalities in high-income countries in the Middle East countries like Kuwait.

Exposure to violence during adolescence is associated with increased risk behaviors and mental health problems in adulthood. Friendship attachment during adolescence may, however, mitigate the negative effects of exposure to violence on trajectories of depression and anxiety in young adulthood. In this study, we used growth curve modeling to examine associations between exposure to violence and mental health outcomes, followed by multi-group analyses with friendship attachment as the moderator. The sample was drawn from a longitudinal study (12 waves; 1994-2012) of 676 (54% female) urban high school students. We found strong positive associations between exposure to violence during adolescence and later self-reported depressive and anxiety symptoms. Notably, securely attached adolescents reported faster decreases in mental health symptoms as a function of violence relative to their insecurely attached peers as they transitioned into adulthood.
