RESUMO

Angioedema has been observed in a few cases secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Herein, we report a rare case where a young healthy male initially presented with angioedema, lymphadenopathy and parotitis and later on developed neuropsychiatric manifestations at the very onset of his SLE disease. This case illustrates the importance of prompt clinical consideration of lupus with unusual and atypical preceding manifestations.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to investigate left ventricular (LV) function in hypertensive patients by 3-dimensional (3D) speckle tracking imaging, and determine the relation between the LV mechanics and functional capacity in this population. This cross-sectional study included 20 treated subjects with well-controlled arterial hypertension (group B) and 20 treated participants with uncontrolled hypertension (group A), adjusted by gender and age. All the subjects underwent 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, complete 2-dimensional and 3D examination, and exercise testing. Patients had similar 3D LV ejection fraction. LV mass was higher in group of uncontrolled hypertension (154.71 ± 49.7 g/m2 versus 147.12±44.8 g/m2 p < 0.01), as well as E/E'ratio (11.4 versus 8.9, p =0.02). 3D global longitudinal and circumferential strain and strain rate were significantly decreased in patients with inadequately controlled hypertension (LS 16.25% versus -19.24%, p=0.007, L-SR -0.97/sec versus -1.48/sec, p=0.04, CS -17.89%versus -21.76%, p=0.04, respectively), while the difference of radial strain and strain rate did not reach statistical significance. Group A of patients had also a significantly lower functional capacity (mean duration of test 13,3 min. versus 17,4 min, nr. of METS 9.4 versus 13.7). Duration of exercise was independently associated with LV mass , mean BP at daytime , E/E' ratio and 3D global longitudinal strain (ß = 0.34, p = 0.02) in the whole hypertensive population in our study. In conclusion, LV longitudinal strain and functional capacity are significantly impaired in the patients with uncontrolled hypertension in comparison with the well-controlled hypertensive patients and are independently associated.

RESUMO

The study of chronic viral hepatitis represents a real challenge for modern medicine. If we also analyze this illness from the point of the mental changes involved, the complexity of the study increases. To the etiological, symptomatological polymorphism, alongside the paraclinical and conduct diagnosis, there may be easily added the multitude of mental disorders. The authors have tried, through this paper, to draw the attention upon the importance of studying certain mental disorders connected to a somatic disease, each and every representing a distinct entity, but which together may reach a remarkable complexity.

RESUMO

We report on the structural and optical properties of single InAs quantum dots (QDs) formed in etched GaAs pits with different dimensions. The site-controlled QDs were fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(001) surfaces patterned by nanoimprint lithography. We show that the properties of the QDs can be modified by varying the dimensions of the etched GaAs pits. Increasing the pit size resulted in larger QDs and thus in longer photoluminescence wavelengths. However, the fine structure splitting remained unaffected. A photoluminescence linewidth of 41 µeV and average fine structure splitting of 15.7 µeV were obtained for exciton recombination in the single site-controlled QDs.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: This study aim was to identify the relations between tumor suppressor genes (p53, bcl-2, PTEN), nuclear proliferative antigen Ki-67 and epidemiologic, morphologic and histologic patient related factors, in colorectal cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two prospectively collected colorectal cancer resection specimens were histologically prepared, using standard paraffin-embedded and Hematoxylin-Eosin staining method; for immunohistochemical study, the Streptavidin-Biotin (sABC)/Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) method was used. RESULTS: P53 was positive in 86.36% of cases, more intense (>50%) in rectal cancer and in women 59.16 ± 9.49-year-old; the G1/2 adenocarcinoma was dominant. Bcl-2 was positive in 18.18% of the cases, in distal colorectal cancer, only in men, 63.5 ± 13.2-year-old. PTEN was positive in 95.45% of the cases; intense positivity was recorded in 12 men and six women, 61.47 ± 11.67-year-old, in rectal topography. Ki-67 was positive in 86.36% of the cases, more intense in four men and four women, 63.45 ± 12.22-year-old, in proximal and advanced colorectal cancers (pT3N1/2 - 62.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Tumor suppressor genes mutations are often present in colorectal cancer; the intensity of the expression of these mutations varies, which could explain the different prognosis for these patients.

RESUMO

We present the growth of single, site-controlled InAs quantum dots on GaAs templates using UV-nanoimprint lithography and molecular beam epitaxy. A large quantum dot array with a period of 1.5 µm was achieved. Single quantum dots were studied by steady-state and time-resolved micro-photoluminescence experiments. We obtained single exciton emission with a linewidth of 45 µeV. In time-resolved experiments, we observed decay times of about 670 ps. Our results underline the potential of nanoimprint lithography and molecular beam epitaxy to create large-scale, single quantum dot arrays.

RESUMO

We combine nanoimprint lithography and molecular beam epitaxy for the site-controlled growth of InAs quantum dot chains on GaAs(100) substrates. We study the influence of quantum dot growth temperature and regrowth buffer thickness on the formation of the quantum dot chains. In particular, we show that by carefully tuning the growth conditions we can achieve equal quantum dot densities and photoluminescence ground state peak wavelengths for quantum dot chains grown on patterns oriented along the [011], [01 ̄1], [011] and [001] directions. Furthermore, we identify the crystal facets that form the sidewalls of the grooves in the differently oriented patterns after capping and show that the existence of (411)A sidewalls causes reduction of the QD density as well as sidewall roughening.

RESUMO

The simple postural task of quiet standing, which requires minimal attentional resources, is generally paired with cognitive activity. Competition for attentional resources is a consequence of simultaneously performing balance tasks and cognitive tasks, and impairment of attentional resource allocation with aging leads to increased risks of fall. We investigated age-related changes in posture control during dual task performance, using a paradigm that crossed a static (quiet standing) and a dynamic (keeping balance on a translational force plate) postural task and cognitive tasks of low demand (mental arithmetic) and high demand (spatial memory). Postural performance was analyzed through center-of-pressure displacements using both statistical (body sway area/sway velocity) and nonlinear (wavelet transform) methods in three age groups (younger, middle-aged, and older healthy participants). Results showed that 1) the nonlinear analysis method was more sensitive than the traditional approach in distinguishing performance between age groups, a result that explains discrepancies in the dual-task literature; 2) dual-tasking costs were dependent on both postural task difficulty and cognitive task complexity, corroborating previous investigations; 3) younger adults improved their postural performance during dual-tasking, but older adults lowered their performance; 4) balance recovery strategies in the dynamic postural task appeared to differ in younger versus older adults. Together, our findings on dual-tasking can be interpreted within the conceptual frame of task prioritization: shifting attention away from postural task automates posture control in the younger adults, whereas prioritization of postural task and selection of compensatory strategy are the main characteristics of posture control in the older population.

RESUMO

This paper reviews the literature on balance and cognitive function in normal aging. The first part provides a general background of dual tasking (postural performance under a concurrent cognitive activity) and summarizes the main relevant models capable of explaining the poorer postural performance of older-healthy adults compared to younger-healthy adults: the cross-domain competition model, the nonlinear interaction model, and the task-prioritization model. In the second part, we discuss the main limitations of the traditional-posturographic analyses used in most of the dual-task investigations and explain how these can account for some discrepancies found in the literature. New methods based on the stabilogram-diffusion analysis and the wavelet transform are proposed as better approaches to understand posture control. The advantages of these new methods are illustrated in young adults and elderly people performing a simple postural task (quiet standing) simultaneously with a mental or a spatial task.

RESUMO

It was proved spectrophotometrically that Mycoplasma agalactiae antigen inoculated in vivo in sheep modifies the corresponding erythrocyte lysates reactivity toward methylene blue and neutral red and induces several types of chromosomal rearrangements. The treatment in vivo of sheep with an original preparation obtained from the Phaseolus vulgaris pods restores the erythrocyte lysates reactivity toward the two redox dyes and reduces the chromosomal abnormalities frequency induced by the mycoplasmal antigen. It was also demonstrated by optical and electronical microscopy that the Smise line mouse meiocytes exhibit chromosomal abnormalities induced by the cyclophosphamide treatment in vivo. In the case of concomitant treatment with the cyclophosphamide and C vitamin the same frequency of abnormalities was recorded as in the simple treatment with the drug.

RESUMO

The interaction of haemin with reduced glutathione (GSH) was investigated in vitro and the association constant was determined by both spectrophotometric and interferometric methods. In order to elucidate the nature of this interaction, the reaction of haemin with a typical reductive agent (sodium dithionite) and a typical chelating agent for hem-iron (histidine) was also studied. Haemin-induced haemolysis in the presence and absence of GSH was monitored spectrophotometrically. The results outline the role of GSH at physiological concentration in preventing erythrocyte damage by haemin.

RESUMO

By some hemagglutination (HA) studies it was proved that NLD (the lysozyme digest fraction of Nocardia opaca) interacts with the Sendai virus envelope glycoproteic receptors, but not with those of the Beijing 353/89 H3N2) Influenza virus. Very likely the inhibition is due to the presence of some GAL lectins in NLD: The erythrocytes agglutinability (by the Sendai virus and by the Beijing 353/89 H3N2) Influenza virus is enhanced by their incubation with galactose.

RESUMO

A comparative study of Nocardia water soluble mitogen (NWSM) action on membrane potential and proliferation rate of murine peritoneal lymphocytes was performed at various incubation times. The membrane surface charge was evaluated by laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) through the measurement of the cell electrophoretic mobility at different pH values (from pH 5 to 9). We demonstrated that NWSM treatment decreases the lymphocyte membrane potential. This variation reached a maximal level after 24 hrs. at pH 7 and remained unchanged during the 72 hrs. observation. A significant stimulation of lymphocyte proliferation was noted after a 24 hrs. incubation. However, the highest rate of [3H]-thymidine incorporation was observed at 48 hrs. with a subsequent decrease at 72 hrs. On the basis of these data, it is suggested, that membrane potential changes may represent an early important step in the mechanism of lymphocyte activation by NWSM, as it has been shown for some mitogenic compounds.

RESUMO

The effect of the "Nocardia lysozyme digest" (NLD) obtained from Nocardia opaca on the Epirubicine accumulation in erythrocytes was studied by flow cytometry. It was shown that the number of fluorescent cells increased under the NLD action due to the increased membrane permeability for epirubicine. An opposite effect was also recorded consisting in the decrease of the relative fluorescence intensity per cell. This effect was attributed to the fluorescence quenching by the oxygen metabolites produced by NDL. In this paper we present some results of the study of the NLD effect on the epirubicine (Epir) accumulation in the erythrocytes (E). It is shown by flow cytometry that the Epir accumulation in the red cells is modified by the presence of the NLD fraction.

RESUMO

The LDH cytotoxicity test is able to emphasize the stabilisation of human embryo fibroblast membranes, in vitro, by two amphiphilic drugs: the metomidate and the thymolol. The membrane stabilisation is emphasized by the reduced LDH externalization as compared with the untreated cells. The use of the LDH test for the selection of some natural complexes or synthetic drugs with membrane stabilising and potential antiviral activity is proposed. The inhibition of LDH by metomidate was recorded, as decreasing of the enzyme activity with increasing metomidate concentration. This fact explains the known lactic acid accumulation, under metomidate treatment of human subjects. The use of metomidate in classical cancer treatment potentiation is proposed instead of lactate externalization inhibitors, already used for this aim.

RESUMO

In order to reveal by absorption spectrophotometry the redox differences between the Plasmodium berghei infected erythrocyte lysates (MEL) and the healthy ones (HEL) we studied their interaction with the neutral red (NR) redox dye. The variation of the dye absorption intensity at 540 nm as a function of the hemoglobin content of the samples was attributed to the redox potential variation of the different hemoglobin aggregates formed in the samples containing different hemoglobin quantities. By short term treatment of the lysates with ascorbic acid in the presence of NR, great redox reactivity difference was proved between MEL and HEL as revealed by absorption and explained by the initial higher oxidation state of the Hb iron in MEL than in HEL.
