RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Venipuncture is one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in paediatric care, but it can also be one of the most painful and distressing experiences for patients. Finding effective strategies to manage pain and fear associated with venipuncture is crucial for improving the paediatric patient experience and promoting positive health outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a combined approach using a topical analgesic cream (TKTX cream) and a distraction technique (Trace Image and Colouring for Kids-Book, TICK-B) in reducing pain intensity and fear levels in children undergoing venipuncture procedures. METHODS: We conducted this randomised controlled trial among 176 children aged 6-12 years undergoing venipuncture. Participants were randomly assigned to four groups: TICK-B, TKTX cream, TICK-B+TKTX cream and a control group. Pain and fear were measured using the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale and Children's Fear Scale. The study was carried out from 20 February 2024 to 1 June 2024 at the emergency unit of Heevi paediatric teaching hospital in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. In the intervention groups, TICK-B was applied for 2-3 min before needle insertion, and TKTX cream was applied 20 min before the venipuncture procedure. All outcome measures were evaluated 2-3 min after the completion of the venipuncture procedure. RESULTS: The combined TICK-B (colouring book) and TKTX cream (topical anaesthetic) intervention was the most effective in reducing both pain intensity (mean score 2.80 vs 7.24 in the control, p<0.001) and fear levels (mean score 0.93 vs 2.83 in the control, p<0.001) during and after venipuncture procedures compared with individual interventions and control. CONCLUSIONS: The combined TICK-B distraction and TKTX cream topical anaesthetic intervention was the most effective in reducing pain intensity and fear during and after venipuncture in children, providing a practical strategy for healthcare providers to optimise needle procedure management. RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: At times of parental cancer, children's health and well-being are at risk, which is why interventions to support these children have been developed. When developing such interventions, engagement of the population under study in research is endorsed to enhance relevance of research questions and to enhance uptake and dissemination of the findings. Since no previous review has mapped the ways children participate in the development, use and evaluation of these support interventions, the focus of the upcoming scoping review is to identify gaps in the literature for guidance of future research. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The scoping review is guided by the methodological framework developed by Arksey and O'Malley. A preliminary search strategy was performed in PubMed in November 2020, refined in March 2021 and applied in PubMed, PsycINFO and CINAHL. Additional searches were performed in Google Scholar and SwePub, and reference lists were hand searched. Refined searches will be conducted in February 2024. The multidisciplinary research team will independently screen titles, abstracts and full-text articles for relevance. Then, relevant studies will be critically evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Critical Appraisal Skills Tools. Data will be extracted using an extraction form and analysed deductively. A descriptive summary of study characteristics and the research process will be presented, including a flow chart. The reporting of the study will be guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Being a secondary analysis, ethical approval is not needed. Still, relevant studies will be reviewed for ethical approval as a criterion for inclusion. The findings will be used to inform future studies and will be published in a scientific journal as well as presented at conferences and organisations for children's rights.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: No single risk factor is decisive in shaping an individual's healthy development. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between depressive symptoms and a cumulative risk index comprising individual, family, and social variables among nursing students. METHODS: We enrolled 1716 Chinese nursing students from three universities in a paperless survey that assessed a range of individual, family, and social risk factors associated with depressive symptoms. Multiple risk analysis was conducted to create a composite risk score for each individual. A test for trend was employed to assess the relationship between the multiple risk classification and depressive symptoms individually. Additionally, a 2-step cluster analysis and χ2 tests were used to examine the relationship between the different clusters and the level of depressive symptoms. RESULTS: The mean scores of depressive symptoms increased significantly as the number of risk factors increased, regardless of their combination. As the number of risk factors increased, the proportion of nursing students in the normal group decreased, while the proportion in the group with depressive symptoms of varying severity tended to increase (P < 0.001). A high-risk cluster characterized by poor sleep quality combined with problematic smartphone use was associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Based on these findings that cumulative exposure to multiple risk factors is more harmful than cumulative exposure to fewer risk factors, then interventions that isolate only one risk factor are less likely to be effective than those that are multifaceted.

RESUMO

AIM: There is limited knowledge about the perceptions of HPV vaccination in middle-school children. This qualitative study aimed to explore their views. METHODS: We conducted focus group interviews with children, 10-11 years of age, who had been offered HPV vaccination through the school health services in mid-north Sweden in spring of 2023. Data were analysed with qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: This study included six focus group interviews with 49 children (boys n = 29; girls n = 20), mean of 11 years of age. Participating children expressed the need to feel safe to be of utmost importance and the means to do so was to be prepared and informed by someone the child trusted. The school nurse was perceived as the expert, best suited to provide factual information, support and motivation, both to children and their parents. CONCLUSION: We confirm that healthcare providers' recommendations are crucial for HPV vaccine acceptance also from the child's perspective. Improved information about HPV vaccination to children is necessary. Children's right to participate on their own terms is not fulfilled today. Vaccine promotion, both to children and parents, should be actively managed by the school nurse.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effectiveness of trace image and coloring for kids-book (TICK-B), cough trick, and balloon inflation techniques in reducing pain and fear in children during venipuncture. The current study is a prospective, controlled, and randomized trial (RCT). School-aged children who required venipuncture were involved in the study. Pediatric patients were randomly assigned to four groups: the TICK-B group, the cough trick group, the inflation of balloons, and the control groups. Before and after the procedure, the children and their parents were interviewed. Wong-Baker (FACES) Pain Rating Scale was applied to measure the severity of pain. Children's Fear Scale was applied to measure children's fear. This study involved the 160 children (mean age, 8.39-2.18 years). The severity of pain and fear levels among the children during and after the procedure were significantly different (p = 0.001). Pain and fear were significantly decreased in children in the intervention groups compared with those in the control group (p < 0.05). In the TICK-B group, participants reported significantly less pain and fear during the venipuncture procedure than in the cough trick, balloon inflation, and control groups (P = 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.001) and after the procedure (p = 0.001, p = 0.002, p = 0.002). There was a similar significance found in the level of fear during the procedure (p = 0.001, p = 0.002, p = 0.006), and after the procedure (p = 0.001, p = 0.008, p = 0.015).    Conclusion: TICK-B was the most effective method for decreasing the pain and fear of children associated with venipuncture procedures. Furthermore, the distraction technique of coughing and inflating balloons also proved efficacious in decreasing the pain and fear of children during venipuncture.    Trial registration: The study has been registered with ClinicalTrials.org under the number NCT04983303. It was retrospectively registered on July 26, 2021. What is Known: • Venipuncture, one of the most painful and uncomfortable procedures for children, caused great fear and discomfort during the procedure. What is New: • The TICK-B technique, music listening, and cartoon watching techniques are effective, simple, and safe ways to reduce children's fear and pain. These interventions provide a good way for children and their parents to collaborate during painful medical procedures. • No studies have compared the impact of TICK-B during venipuncture.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to investigate the interaction process between child and dog and how it possibly affects children's wellbeing during Animal Assisted Activity. Children have reported negative feelings such as fear and anxiety when being cared for in hospital and various kinds of complementary treatment can alleviate this. Different complementary treatments, including interaction with a dog, can create positive emotions and the treatment has been reported to have both physiological and psychological beneficial effects. However, there is a lack of studies describing children's interaction with a dog. This is an observational study, analysed from field notes with qualitative content analysis using a deductive approach. Children (n = 49) aged 3-18 years of age at a paediatric hospital voluntarily participated in the study. The results are reported on a six-level scale that describes the child-dog interaction: 1. Passive interaction, 2. One-way non-spoken communication, 3. Facilitating the interaction, 4. Interaction by activity encouragement, 5. Interaction initiated by the child, and 6. Interaction through deepened interplay. All children attained level five. Eighty-nine per cent attained level six and these children interacted fully, having a two-way deepened interplay with the dog. Further, when the interaction proceeded to a deepened interplay this affected the children positively both physically and emotionally. Structured Animal Assisted Activity with a dog that includes an introduction, an active part and a relaxing part is a suitable model to offer children in paediatric hospital care since the children attained a child-initiated interaction or interaction through deepened interplay.

RESUMO

Introduction: Rather than focusing on the activities that the smartphone has been used for, the existing literature frequently focuses on the association between problematic use of smartphone independent of the content of use (self-reported) and depressive symptoms in youth. This study aims to explore patterns of smartphone usage and the association with depressive symptoms in nursing students. Methods: This cross-sectional study of nursing freshmen (n = 1, 716) was conducted between October and November 2018. Participants were recruited from three Chinese public medical universities using stratified cluster sampling. Self-rated frequency of 12 different smartphone activities over the preceding week was evaluated. Depressive symptoms were assessed by using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Results: Of the 1,716 students recruited, 1,424 (83.0%) were girls, and the mean [SD] age was 18.90 [1.39] years. Using principal component analysis (PCA), two typical usage patterns were indicated. The "entertainment pattern" factor included a high frequency of streaming images or videos, searching for information, chatting online, online shopping, downloading, reading online, checking social media sites, taking pictures or videos, and playing games. The "communication pattern" had a high frequency of emailing, texting, and calling. Using logistic regression models, the association between smartphone usage patterns and depressive symptoms was tested. The "communication pattern" was significantly associated with a 53% increase in the odds of moderate and above depressive symptoms (AOR = 1.529; 95% CI = 1.286-1.818; p < 0.001), controlling for a set of socio-demographic and smartphone use covariates. Discussion: This study provides insights into how the patterns of smartphone usage are associated with the severity of depressive symptoms in nursing students. It indicates that it may primarily be how we use our smartphones rather than how much we use them that poses a risk for depression.

RESUMO

Background: Being diagnosed with cancer in childhood often has a direct impact on the child's opportunities to participate in activities and the child's sense of belonging in different life situations. Experiences of illness in youth affect the lives of these individuals in numerous ways and they need pronounced support to regain their normal life after treatment. Purpose: To illustrate how childhood cancer survivors describe the role of the caring support provided by healthcare professionals at diagnosis and during the cancer trajectory. Methods: A mixed methods approach was applied. Swanson's Theory of Caring was used to deductively analyze the answers in a study-specific questionnaire with Likert scales (1-5). Descriptive and comparative statistics and exploratory factor analyses were performed. Results: Sixty-two former patients, diagnosed with solid tumors/lymphoma in 1983 to 2003 in Sweden, participated. The mean time passed since treatment was 15.7 years. Swanson's caring processes Being with and Doing for were the most prominent loading categorical factor indicators. Higher scores for healthcare professionals being emotionally present (Being with), doing for others what they would do for themselves (Doing for) and being willing to understand the sick child's situation (Knowing) were highlighted by survivors older than 30 years, compared to those younger than 30 years (p = 0.041, p = 0.045, and p = 0.013, respectively). An increased vulnerability regarding their ability to cope with difficulties (Maintain belief) was found among participants who were treated during adolescence, related to schoolchildren (p = 0.048), and among those who had been treated with extra-cranial irradiation in comparison with no extra-cranial irradiation (p = 0.004). The role of having a partner in comparison with being single was underlined among those who felt they had acquired the tools they needed to take care of themselves (Enabling) (p = 0.013). The total explained variance was 63%. Conclusions: A person-centered care approach during treatment for childhood cancer, reflected by a caring model, highlights the role of healthcare professionals being emotionally present, involving children, performing actions, and with an approach that has potential long-term implications. Childhood cancer patients and survivors need not only clinically competent professionals, but professionals who provide caring interactions with compassion.

RESUMO

Introduction: According to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, all children have the right to health. Since good health is a decisive factor for children's future, investing in children's health is important, especially children from vulnerable areas. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of health among school-aged children from socially vulnerable areas. Methods: The study has an explorative mixed-method design with a participatory and inductive approach based on focus group interviews with children and youth leaders, respectively, at Multi-activity Centers in three of the vulnerable areas in Malmö Municipality, as well as results from the Multi-activity Centers' own questionnaire. The data has been analyzed with inductive and deductive content analysis. Results: The children and the youth leaders described health in terms of well-being, participation, and activity. Well-being included feeling good and safe, having a healthy body, and having fun by doing things together with friends and leaders. Participating in activities was described as having a feeling of involvement, being able to have an influence on the organization of the activities and participating on one's own terms. Discussion: The result of this study shows that participating in activities increases the child's sense of well-being.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review will identify and map available nursing interventions provided by pediatric oncology hospital services to pediatric patients with cancer and/or their family members. The aim is to develop a comprehensive overview of the characteristics of nursing interventions and to identify potential knowledge gaps. INTRODUCTION: Clinical nursing care is an essential part of pediatric oncology. In pediatric oncology nursing research, a shift from explanatory studies to intervention studies is recommended. The body of research on interventions for pediatric oncology patients and their families has grown in recent years. However, there are no reviews on nursing interventions currently available for pediatric oncology. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Studies will be considered for inclusion if they refer to pediatric patients with cancer, and/or family members of a pediatric patient with cancer, who have received non-pharmacological and non-procedural nursing interventions provided by a pediatric oncology hospital service. Studies must also be peer-reviewed, published from the year 2000 onward, and written in English, Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish. METHODS: The review will be conducted in accordance with the JBI guidelines for scoping reviews. A 3-step search strategy will be followed using the PCC mnemonic (Population, Concept, Context). The databases to be searched will include Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, PsyclNFO, and Embase. The identified studies will be screened based on title and abstract, as well as full text, by 2 independent reviewers. Data will be extracted and managed in Covidence. A summary of the results will be presented as a narrative description, supported by tables.

RESUMO

Background: Specific knowledge is required in pediatric oncology, and specialization of nurses has been identified as a priority. In Sweden, a national program in pediatric oncology nursing has been offered since 2003. The aim of this study was to gain knowledge of nurses' perceptions of the impact of this educational program. Methods: Eighty nurses who had completed the educational program in three cohorts (2012-2019) were invited to participate in this cross-sectional survey. An electronic study-specific questionnaire containing multiple-choice questions was used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation tests. Results: Fifty-nine (74%) nurses completed the survey, of whom 98% responded that they would recommend the program to a large/fairly large extent. At the time of the survey, 15 (25%) participants had left pediatric oncology care. Among the remaining 44, 31 (71%) of the nurses were working bedside, and 13 (42%) of these combined this with a special position (e.g., consultant nurse). The education resulted in career advancement, as the number of nurses with special positions increased following completion of the program, from 20% to 59%. The vast majority stated that the knowledge gained from the education contributed to increased confidence in interactions with the children/families. Discussion: Continuing education of nurses in pediatric oncology has an impact on career opportunities in clinical practice and contributes to nurses' confidence and professional work. However, education is not enough to retain competent nurses. Employers need to be aware of the role of the work environment, aspects of work-life balance and career paths.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines effectively prevent, and can even eliminate, HPV-related cancers. Currently, vaccination rates are suboptimal in the national Swedish school-based vaccination program. School nurses play a key role in all aspects of the vaccination process. Therefore, this study aims to explore school nurses' perceived HPV vaccination challenges. METHODS: Seven focus group interviews were conducted with school nurses (n = 35) working in nine socio-demographically diverse municipalities in mid-Sweden. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: Participants described difficulties in encountering and handling the diversity of reasons for vaccine hesitancy. Parents known to be skeptical of vaccines in general were seen as most difficult to reach. Uncertainty was expressed concerning the extent of professional responsibility for vaccine promotion. The informants expressed a lack of guidelines for vaccine promotion and described challenges in supporting the child's own wishes. Creating a safe space for the individual child was seen as crucial. Other problems described were the challenges of overcoming children's fear of needles, supporting unvaccinated children, and being confronted with the remaining gender inequities of the pan-gender vaccination program. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that school nurses, especially those new to their profession, may benefit from training and guidance22 material on how to address vaccine hesitancy.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to explore the factors that are associated with posttraumatic growth among spouses of women diagnosed with gynaecological cancer. DESIGN: A cross-sectional descriptive study. METHODS: A convenience sample of 312 spouses of women diagnosed with gynaecological cancer was recruited from two comprehensive hospitals in China, from March 2018 to March 2020. Demographic characteristics, cancer-related characteristics, posttraumatic growth, perceived social support and coping were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis were performed. The methods were guided by the STROBE checklist. RESULTS: The mean score of posttraumatic growth was 46.7 (standard deviation = 16.7). The associated factors of posttraumatic growth were spouses' age, perceived social support, problem-focused coping, dysfunctional coping (e.g. denial) and cancer treatment received by partners, which accounted for 34% of total posttraumatic growth score. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: All participants contributed to the conducting of this study by completing self-reported questionnaires.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Venipuncture is a common procedure resulting in intense discomfort, anxiety, and pain in children. In this regard, we examined the effectiveness of a simple and practical art-based intervention on pain and anxiety in children who underwent venipuncture procedures. METHOD: In this parallel randomized control trial, children aged 6-12 years were randomly allocated to either an intervention or a control group. The intervention group (n = 73) received an art-based intervention called Trace Image and Coloring for Kids-Book (TICK-B) during the venipuncture procedure compared to no intervention in the control group (n = 71). The children, their parents, and an observer nurse rated the outcomes 1-2 min after the venipuncture procedure was finished. FINDINGS: The patients in the intervention group had a substantially lower mean value of pain and anxiety-as rated by children, their parents, and an observer nurse-compared to the control patients. The average values of pain reported by the children, parents, and observer nurse were 3.50, 3.52, and 3.49 in the intervention group in contrast to 6.53, 6.59, and 6.45 in the control group (a large effect). Similarly, the patients in the intervention group had significantly lower mean values of anxiety compared to the control group: 0.88, 1.43, and 1.42 vs. 3.09, 2.52, and 2.52, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that TICK-B is an effective technique to reduce the levels of pain and anxiety in children undergoing venipuncture procedures. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The TICK-B can be used easily by nurses to relieve the pain of children during venipuncture procedures. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinical Trial Registry, NCT04690257. RESUMO

Migration is a stressful experience and research shows that newly arrived migrants in Sweden suffer from different challenges and struggle to relate to parenting in a new culture that is different from their own. The Swedish Child Health Services (CHS) focuses on promoting health among children, as well as supporting parents in parenting. Although this is a goal, migrant parents participate at lower rates in parental support groups. This paper aims to discuss how the Swedish CHS can support these families and address the need for improvement in the parental support offered to migrant parents during transition into their host country. In addition, this paper also aims to review and discuss the advantages of using a community-based participatory research approach together with the Swedish CHS to identify and apply culturally appropriate support programs to increase health literacy among migrant parents. The Swedish government decided to place greater emphasis and resources on supporting parents and promoting equal health among families in Sweden, with special emphasis on migrants and other vulnerable groups. This report from the Swedish government indicates the importance of creating knowledge about new ways, methods, and actions that may be needed to increase this support. One suggestion of this paper is to provide culturally appropriate healthcare work using a community-based participatory research approach, where migrant parents themselves are actively involved in the development of support programs. This approach will not only provide migrant families knowledge and support, it will also build on their needs and the challenges they can share, and receive support to overcome.

RESUMO

Background: Peripheral venous cannulation (PIVC) is one of the most common needle procedures associated with the therapies of pediatric patients, which causes pain and anxiety in children. Trace Image and Coloring for Kids-Book (TICK-B) is one of the arts-based interventions to relieve pain and anxiety, but none of the existing studies use the TICK-B to decrease children's pain intensity and anxiety levels during PICV. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Trace Image and Coloring for Kids-Book (TICK-B) in decreasing children's pain and anxiety during PIVC. Methods: A parallel, randomized, double-blind controlled trial was used in this study. Children aged 6-12 years were randomly allocated to one of two groups: intervention or control. The intervention group (n = 48) received the TICK-B during the PIVC, compared to no intervention in the control group (n = 52). The children, their parents, and an observer nurse rated outcomes 1-2 min after completion of the procedure. The patients in both groups were similar in age, gender, duration of hospitalization, injections, mother's age, and education. Faces Pain Scale-Revised (FPS-R), Children's Fear Scale (CFS), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were used to measure pain and anxiety. Paired and independent t-tests were used for data analysis. Results: Patients in the intervention group reported significantly reduced pain levels than those in the control group (p <0.001), as reported by children (3.08 vs. 7.06), parents (3.08 vs. 7.13), and the observer nurse (3.06 vs. 7.13), respectively. Anxiety levels were also significantly lower among patients in the intervention group than in the control group (p <0.001), as reported by children (0.88 vs. 3.17), parents (0.94 vs. 3.19), and the observer nurse (0.85 vs. 2.94), respectively. Conclusions: TICK-B is an effective technique for reducing children's pain and anxiety during PIVC. TICK-B is a simple, inexpensive, and effective technique that nurses can use to decrease the levels of pain and anxiety of pediatric patients during intravenous cannulation.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Children's visits to the ICU are still restricted, and more focus on the child's own needs and experiences are needed. The aim of this study is to illustrate the meaning of being a visiting child of a seriously ill parent receiving care at the ICU. METHOD: A qualitative descriptive design was used, with open-ended interviews with seven children (6-18 years) performed and analysed using a phenomenological research approach. FINDINGS: Being a visiting child of a seriously ill parent receiving care at the ICU is described as a life situation taking place in an unfamiliar environment, characterized by a heartfelt, genuine desire to be there, in an interdependence entailing offering a loved one the help they need while at the same time being seen in a compassionate way and being able to share, revealing a sudden awakening of an inner truth of reality and a sense of a healing wisdom of understanding. CONCLUSIONS: The children felt good when they visited their ill parent, but at the same time not fully involved, and desired a more compassionate, caring approach by the nurses. Improvements are needed in how to approach visiting children in a more individual and caring way.

RESUMO

AIM: To explore child health professionals' experiences of the early implementation of the rotavirus vaccination in the two regions that first introduced this vaccination in Sweden. METHODS: A descriptive and repeated cross-sectional study based on a digital study-specific questionnaire with a baseline in 2014 and with a 2-year follow-up in 2016. The study population consisted of nurses and doctors working in child health centres in the health care regions of Stockholm and Jönköping. RESULTS: In Stockholm, a larger proportion of the respondents (n = 355) had concerns in 2014, in comparison with the respondents in Jönköping (n = 101), mostly about the vaccination being a new and time-consuming task (60% versus 23%). In 2016, the overall attitude to vaccination was more positive in both regions and the levels of concern about increased workload were reduced (Stockholm, n = 519, 39%, versus Jönköping, n = 96, 10%). Challenges before and after the introduction in both regions were particularly related to how to give information about the vaccine's potential increased risk of intussusception. CONCLUSION: The gap between respondents' knowledge, attitudes and concerns pre- and post-vaccination introduction was larger in Stockholm compared to Jönköping. In both regions, overall, the implementation of the rotavirus vaccination was perceived as being easier than expected.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The experience of cancer could lead to positive psychological changes following the struggle with diagnosis and treatment. Understanding post-traumatic growth and its influencing factors in women affected by gynecological cancer is essential to enhance their possibility of achieving positive changes. The purpose of this study was to describe the post-traumatic growth level and explore the influencing factors of post-traumatic growth in Chinese women diagnosed with gynecological cancer. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey with a convenience sampling method was employed to collect data using the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), Distress Disclosure Index (DDI), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). The questionnaires were administered to 344 participants recruited from two hospitals in Hefei City, the capital of Anhui Province in China, between March 2018 and March 2019. All statistical analyses were performed using nonparametric tests. The Mann-Whitney U Test was used to distinguish the intergroup differences. Correlations were evaluated with Spearman rank correlation coefficients. RESULTS: Total score for PTGI was 56.5 (range 48.0-68.0). The subscale with the highest centesimal score in the PTGI was appreciation of life and the lowest was spiritual change. The top five items with the highest scores of PTGI belonged to appreciating life, personal strength, and relating to others. Self-disclosure, confrontation, avoidance, acceptance-resignation, perceived social support, education level, cancer type and the place they lived had significant influence on post-traumatic growth. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that women who have high levels of perceived social support, confrontation, avoidance, self-disclosure and education level tend to experience more post-traumatic growth, while, conversely, high levels of acceptance-resignation have a negative influence on promoting post-traumatic growth. These meaningful findings propose new perspectives for promoting post-traumatic growth in Chinese women diagnosed with gynecological cancer.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was carried out in order to evaluate children's experiences after taking part in the pilot clinical intervention "See Me" aimed at supporting children as relatives. METHOD: A qualitative explorative design with interviews was chosen, with analyses using an inductive approach. Interviews were conducted with 19 children (9 aged 7-12 years and 10 aged 13-18 years). The younger children were asked to draw a picture of a person in hospital, using the Child Drawing: hospital (CD:H) instrument to measure the child's level of anxiety. The older children completed the Caring Professional Scale (CPS) as a measure of the caring approach in their encounter with the nurse. RESULTS: The interviews with the children show that: they felt expected and welcomed at the hospital; they needed knowledge about their parent's situation; they needed information and participation based on their individual situation; and they needed the nurse to offer them information and support. The results from the pictures showed that one child had above-average levels of anxiety. The older children reported that the nurses were Competent Practitioners, but to a lesser degree that they were Compassionate Healers. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this pilot study indicate that the structure of "See Me" could be used as a starting point to ensure that children as relatives receive information, advice, and support. Further the results indicate that both CD:H and CPS could be used to evaluated children's experiences of support when a parent has a long-term illness.
