RESUMO

Heavy metal pollution in farmland soil represents a considerable risk to ecosystems and human health, constituting a global concern. Focusing on a key area for the cultivation of special agricultural products in Cangxi County, we collected 228 surface soil samples. We analyzed the concentration, spatial distribution, and pollution levels of six heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, and Hg) in the soil. Moreover, we investigated the sources and contribution rates of these heavy metals using Principal Component Analysis/Absolute Principal Component Scores (PCA/APCS) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) models. Our findings indicate that none of the six metals exceeded the pollution thresholds for farmland soils. However, the mean concentrations of Cr and Ni surpassed the background levels of Sichuan Province. A moderate spatial correlation existed between Pb and Ni, attributable to both natural and anthropogenic factors, whereas Zn, Cu, Hg, and Cr displayed a strong spatial correlation, mainly due to natural factors. The spatial patterns of Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni were similar, with higher concentrations in the northern and eastern regions and lower concentrations centrally. Hg's spatial distribution differed, exhibiting a broader range of lower values. The single pollution index evaluation showed that Cr and Ni were low pollution, and the other elements were no pollution. The average value of comprehensive pollution index is 0.994, and the degree of pollution is close to light pollution. Predominantly, higher pollution levels in the northern and eastern regions, lower around reservoirs. The PCA/APCS model identified two main pollution sources: agricultural traffic mixed source (65.2%) and natural parent source (17.2%). The PMF model delineated three sources: agricultural activities (32.59%), transportation (30.64%), and natural parent sources (36.77%). Comparatively, the PMF model proved more accurate and reliable, yielding findings more aligned with the study area's actual conditions.

RESUMO

Deep transfer learning has been widely used to improve the versatility of models. In the problem of cross-domain fault diagnosis in rolling bearings, most models require that the given data have a similar distribution, which limits the diagnostic effect and generalization of the model. This paper proposes a deep reconstruction transfer convolutional neural network (DRTCNN), which satisfies the domain adaptability of the model under cross-domain conditions. Firstly, the model uses a deep reconstruction convolutional automatic encoder for feature extraction and data reconstruction. Through sharing parameters and unsupervised training, the structural information of target domain samples is effectively used to extract domain-invariant features. Secondly, a new subdomain alignment loss function is introduced to align the subdomain distribution of the source domain and the target domain, which can improve the classification accuracy by reducing the intra-class distance and increasing the inter-class distance. In addition, a label smoothing algorithm considering the credibility of the sample is introduced to train the model classifier to avoid the impact of wrong labels on the training process. Three datasets are used to verify the versatility of the model, and the results show that the model has a high accuracy and stability.

RESUMO

To develop ultrasound-guided radiotherapy, we proposed an assistant structure with embedded markers along with a novel alternative method, the Aligned Peak Response (APR) method, to alter the conventional delay-and-sum (DAS) beamformer for reconstructing ultrasound images obtained from a flexible array. We simulated imaging targets in Field-II using point target phantoms with point targets at different locations. In the experimental phantom ultrasound images, image RF data were acquired with a flexible transducer with in-house assistant structures embedded with needle targets for testing the accuracy of the APR method. The lateral full width at half maximum (FWHM) values of the objective point target (OPT) in ground truth ultrasound images, APR-delayed ultrasound images with a flat shape, and images acquired with curved transducer radii of 500 mm and 700 mm were 3.96 mm, 4.95 mm, 4.96 mm, and 4.95 mm. The corresponding axial FWHM values were 1.52 mm, 4.08 mm, 5.84 mm, and 5.92 mm, respectively. These results demonstrate that the proposed assistant structure and the APR method have the potential to construct accurate delay curves without external shape sensing, thereby enabling a flexible ultrasound array for tracking pancreatic tumor targets in real time for radiotherapy.

RESUMO

Microbial activity and interaction are the important driving factors in the start-up phase of food waste composting at low temperature. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of inoculating Bacillus licheniformis on the degradation of organic components and the potential microbe-driven mechanism from the aspects of organic matter degradation, enzyme activity, microbial community interaction, and microbial metabolic function. The results showed that after inoculating B. licheniformis, temperature increased to 47.8°C on day 2, and the degradation of readily degraded carbohydrates (RDC) increased by 31.2%, and the bioheat production increased by 16.5%. There was an obvious enhancement of extracellular enzymes activities after inoculation, especially amylase activity, which increased by 7.68 times on day 4. The inoculated B. licheniformis colonized in composting as key genus in the start-up phase. Modular network analysis and Mantel test indicated that inoculation drove the cooperation between microbial network modules who were responsible for various organic components (RDC, lipid, protein, and lignocellulose) degradation in the start-up phase. Metabolic function prediction suggested that carbohydrate metabolisms including starch and sucrose metabolism, glycolysis / gluconeogenesis, pyruvate metabolism, etc., were improved by increasing the abundance of related functional genes after inoculation. In conclusion, inoculating B. licheniformis accelerated organic degradation by driving the cooperation between microbial network modules and enhancing microbial metabolism in the start-up phase of composting.

RESUMO

Fatty acid cellulose esters (FACE) are common cellulose-based thermoplastics, and their thermoplasticity is determined by both the contents and the lengths of the side chains. Herein, various FACE were synthesized by the ball-milling esterification of cellulose and fatty acyl chlorides containing 10-18 carbons, and their structures and thermoplasticity were thoroughly studied. The results showed that FACE with high degrees of substitution (DS) and low melting flow temperatures (Tf) were achieved as the chain lengths of the fatty acyl chlorides were reduced. In particular, a cellulose decanoate with a DS of 1.85 and a Tf of 186 °C was achieved by feeding 3 mol of decanoyl chloride per mole anhydroglucose units of cellulose. However, cellulose stearate (DS = 1.53) synthesized by the same protocols cannot melt even at 250 °C. More interestingly, the fatty acyl chlorides with 10 and 12 carbons resulted in FACE with superior toughness (elongation at break up to 94.4%). In contrast, due to their potential crystallization of the fatty acyl groups with 14-18 carbons, the corresponding FACE showed higher tensile strength and Young's modulus than the others. This study provides some theoretical basis for the mechanochemical synthesis of thermoplastic FACE with designated properties.

RESUMO

Flexible array transducers can adapt to patient-specific geometries during real-time ultrasound (US) image-guided therapy monitoring. This makes the system radiation-free and less user-dependency. Precise estimation of the flexible transducer's geometry is crucial for the delay-and-sum (DAS) beamforming algorithm to reconstruct B-mode US images. The primary innovation of this research is to build a system named FLexible transducer with EXternal tracking (FLEX) to estimate the position of each element of the flexible transducer and reconstruct precise US images. FLEX utilizes customized optical markers and a tracker to monitor the probe's geometry, employing a polygon fitting algorithm to estimate the position and azimuth angle of each transducer element. Subsequently, the traditional DAS algorithm processes the delay estimation from the tracked element position, reconstructing US images from radio-frequency (RF) channel data. The proposed method underwent evaluation on phantoms and cadaveric specimens, demonstrating its clinical feasibility. Deviations in tracked probe geometry compared to ground truth were minimal, measuring 0.50 ± 0.29 mm for the CIRS phantom, 0.54 ± 0.35 mm for the deformable phantom, and 0.36 ± 0.24 mm on the cadaveric specimen. Reconstructing the US image using tracked probe geometry significantly outperformed the untracked geometry, as indicated by a Dice score of 95.1 ± 3.3% versus 62.3 ± 9.2% for the CIRS phantom. The proposed method achieved high accuracy (<0.5 mm error) in tracking the element position for various random curvatures applicable for clinical deployment. The evaluation results show that the radiation-free proposed method can effectively reconstruct US images and assist in monitoring image-guided therapy with minimal user dependency.

RESUMO

Photoacoustic imaging has demonstrated recent promise for surgical guidance, enabling visualization of tool tips during surgical and non-surgical interventions. To receive photoacoustic signals, most conventional transducers are rigid, while a flexible array is able to deform and provide complete contact on surfaces with different geometries. In this work, we present photoacoustic images acquired with a flexible array transducer in multiple concave shapes in phantom and ex vivo bovine liver experiments targeted toward interventional photoacoustic applications. We validate our image reconstruction equations for known sensor geometries with simulated data, and we provide empirical elevation field-of-view, target position, and image quality measurements. The elevation field-of-view was 6.08 mm at a depth of 4 cm and greater than 13 mm at a depth of 5 cm. The target depth agreement with ground truth ranged 98.35-99.69%. The mean lateral and axial target sizes when imaging 600 µm-core-diameter optical fibers inserted within the phantoms ranged 0.98-2.14 mm and 1.61-2.24 mm, respectively. The mean ± one standard deviation of lateral and axial target sizes when surrounded by liver tissue were 1.80±0.48 mm and 2.17±0.24 mm, respectively. Contrast, signal-to-noise, and generalized contrast-to-noise ratios ranged 6.92-24.42 dB, 46.50-67.51 dB, and 0.76-1, respectively, within the elevational field-of-view. Results establish the feasibility of implementing photoacoustic-guided surgery with a flexible array transducer.

RESUMO

Kitchen waste (KW) composting always has trouble with slow humification process and low humification degree. The objective of this study was to develop potentially efficient solutions to improve the humification of KW composting, accelerate the humus synthesis and produce HS with a high polymerization degree. The impact of Bacillus licheniformis inoculation on the transformation of organic components, humus synthesis, and bacterial metabolic pathways in kitchen waste composting, was investigated. Results revealed that microbial inoculation promoted the degradation of organic constituents, especially readily degradable carbohydrates during the heating phase and lignocellulose fractions during the cooling phase. Inoculation facilitated the production and conversion of polyphenol, reducing sugar, and amino acids, leading to an increase of 20% in the content of humic acid compared to the control. High-throughput sequencing and network analysis indicated inoculation enriched the presence of Bacillus, Lactobacillus, and Streptomyces during the heating phase, while suppressing the abundance of Pseudomonas and Oceanobacillus, enhancing positive microbial interactions. PICRUSt2 analysis suggested inoculation enhanced the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids, promoting the polyphenol humification pathway and facilitating the formation of humus. These findings provide insights for optimizing the humification process of kitchen waste composting by microbial inoculation.

RESUMO

Pancreatic cancer with less than 10% 3-year survival rate is one of deadliest cancer types and greatly benefits from enhanced radiotherapy. Organ motion monitoring helps spare the normal tissue from high radiation and, in turn, enables the dose escalation to the target that has been shown to improve the effectiveness of RT by doubling and tripling post-RT survival rate. The flexible array transducer is a novel and promising solution to address the limitation of conventional US probes. We proposed a novel shape estimation for flexible array transducer using two sequential algorithms: (i) an optical tracking-based system that uses the optical markers coordinates attached to the probe at specific positions to estimate the array shape in real-time and (ii) a fully automatic shape optimization algorithm that automatically searches for the optimal array shape that results in the highest quality reconstructed image. We conducted phantom and in vivo experiments to evaluate the estimated array shapes and the accuracy of reconstructed US images. The proposed method reconstructed US images with low full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of the point scatters, correct aspect ratio of the cyst, and high-matching score with the ground truth. Our results demonstrated that the proposed methods reconstruct high-quality ultrasound images with significantly less defocusing and distortion compared with those without any correction. Specifically, the automatic optimization method reduced the array shape estimation error to less than half-wavelength of transmitted wave, resulting in a high-quality reconstructed image.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of polylactic acid (PLA) on microbial community composition and core metabolism pathways in food waste (FW) composting. The presence of PLA negatively influenced microbial community richness and decreased respectively the abundance of Bacillus, Halocella and Cellvibrio at mesophilic, thermophilic and mature phases. Analysis of microbial metabolism at the gene level help to understand the mechanism in co-composting with FW and PLA. The expression of core functional genes related to lactide metabolism was stimulated by PLA degradation at thermophilic and mature phases. The sum of absolute abundance of functional genes that involved in first and second carbon oxidation of tricarboxylic acid cycle was decreased due to the existence of PLA. The transformation between 2-Oxoglutarate and Succinyl-CoA were interfered in thermophilic phase, which might result in the lower germination index in PLA group (115%) than that in control (186%).

RESUMO

Biodegradable plastics has aroused increasing concern due to the negative environmental impact of plastic waste, however, the impact of biodegradable plastics mixed into kitchen waste (KW) on composting remains poorly understood, especially focusing on bacterial communities in the unique "plastisphere". Here, KW composting for 120 days with adding poly lactic acid / poly butylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PLA/PBAT) plastics were conducted to reveal the dynamics of bacterial composition, succession, and assembly process in different ecological niches (compost and plastisphere). Results showed that the existence of PLA/PBAT plastics in composting would not significantly affect the safety and maturation of composts. After composting, 80% PLA/PBAT were degraded and there were prominent divergences of bacterial compositions between plastisphere, composts with PLA/PBAT and control. Co-occurrence network suggested that PLA/PBAT plastisphere exhibited higher network complexity and cohesion than that in compost, and PLA/PBAT increased bacterial module hubs, network hubs, and connectors in composting compared to control, but might enrich pathogens. Phylogenetic bin-based null model analysis indicated that stochastic processes obviously shaped the communities on PLA/PBAT plastisphere, but compare to control, PLA/PBAT plastics enhanced the contribution of deterministic processes on composting bacterial community assembly. These findings deeply understood the assembly patterns and diversity of plastisphere and composting processes, laying down a foundation on applying biodegradable plastics under the classification of domestic garbage.

RESUMO

Waste activated sludge has been frequently used as mixed substrate to produce polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). However, insufficient research on microbial metabolism has led to difficulties in regulating PHA accumulation in mixed microbial cultures (MMCs). To explore the variation of functional genes during domestication and the effect of different pH conditions on metabolic pathways during PHA accumulation, MMCs were domesticated by adding acetate and propionate with aerobic dynamic feeding strategy for 60 days. As the domestication progressed, the microbial community diversity declined and PHA-producing bacteria, Brevundimonas, Dechloromonas and Hyphomonas, were enriched. Through bacterial function prediction by PICRUSt the gene rpoE involved in starvation resistance of bacteria was enriched after the domestication. The pH value of 8.5 was the best condition for PHA accumulation in MMCs, under which a maximum PHA content reached 23.50% and hydroxybutyric (HB)/hydroxyvaleric (HV) reached 2.22. Untargeted metabolomics analysis exhibited that pH conditions of 7 and 8.5 could promote the up-regulation of significant differential metabolites, while higher alkaline conditions caused the inhibition of metabolic activity. Functional annotation showed that pH condition of 8.5 significantly affected Pyrimidine metabolism, resulting in an increase in PHA production. Regarding the pathways of PHA biosynthesis, acetoacetate was found to be significant in the metabolism of hydroxybutyric, and the alkaline condition could restrain the conversion from hydroxybutyric (HB) to the acetoacetate to protect PHB accumulation in MMCs compared with neutral condition. Taken together, the present results can advance the fundamental understanding of metabolic function in PHA accumulation under different pH conditions.

RESUMO

Nanoparticle clusters provide new degrees of freedom for light control due to their mutual interaction compared with an individual one. Here, the authors demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a type of optical anapole (a nonradiating state) termed as extrinsic anapole, with mode field spreading across Si nanodisk dimers unlike the intrinsic one that is confined within individual nanodisks. The extrinsic anapole is sensitive to the polarized excitation. When the electric vector E of excitation is perpendicular to the dimer axis, the coupled toroidal dipole (TD) mode is largely enhanced and broadened to be spectrally overlapped with the electric dipole (ED) mode. The destructive interference of these two modes results in the generation of the extrinsic anapole. However, it vanishes when E is parallel to the dimer axis. Such polarization dependence can be relieved with the participation of the third nanodisk. Scattering spectra of Si nanodisk trimers stay almost unchanged under different polarized excitations, although the near-field distributions are quite different. Finally, enhanced white-light emission is observed in Si nanodisk clusters, which can be attributed to the near-infrared absorption enhancement induced by extrinsic anapole states. The findings manifest that high-index all-dielectric nanodisk clusters are promising for light manipulation based on mode interference.

RESUMO

Purpose: In this study, we aim to further evaluate the accuracy of ultrasound tracking for intra-fraction pancreatic tumor motion during radiotherapy by a phantom-based study. Methods: Twelve patients with pancreatic cancer who were treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy were enrolled in this study. The displacement points of the respiratory cycle were acquired from 4DCT and transferred to a motion platform to mimic realistic breathing movements in our phantom study. An ultrasound abdominal phantom was placed and fixed in the motion platform. The ground truth of phantom movement was recorded by tracking an optical tracker attached to this phantom. One tumor inside the phantom was the tracking target. In the evaluation of the results, the monitoring results from the ultrasound system were compared with the phantom motion results from the infrared camera. Differences between infrared monitoring motion and ultrasound tracking motion were analyzed by calculating the root-mean-square error. Results: The 82.2% ultrasound tracking motion was within a 0.5 mm difference value between ultrasound tracking displacement and infrared monitoring motion. 0.7% ultrasound tracking failed to track accurately (a difference value > 2.5 mm). These differences between ultrasound tracking motion and infrared monitored motion do not correlate with respiratory displacements, respiratory velocity, or respiratory acceleration by linear regression analysis. Conclusions: The highly accurate monitoring results of this phantom study prove that the ultrasound tracking system may be a potential method for real-time monitoring targets, allowing more accurate delivery of radiation doses.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Iodination of rectal hydrogel spacer increases the computed tomography (CT) visibility. The effect of iodinated hydrogel spacer material on the accuracy of proton dosimetry has not been fully studied yet. We presented a systematic study to determine the effect of iodination on proton dosimetry accuracy during proton therapy (PT). METHODS: PT plans were designed for 20 prostate cancer patients with rectal hydrogel spacer. Three variations of hydrogel density were considered. First, as the ground truth, the true elemental composition of hydrogel true material (TM), verified by our measurement of spacer stopping power ratio, was used for plan optimization and Monte Carlo dose calculation. The dose distribution was recalculated with (1) no material (NM) override based on the CT intensity of the iodinated spacer, and (2) the water material (WM) override, where spacer material was replaced by water. The plans were compared with the ground truth using the metrics of gamma index (GI) and dosimetric indices. RESULTS: The iodination of hydrogel spacer affected the proton dose distribution with the NM scenario showing the most deviation from the ground truth. The iodination of spacer resulted in a notable increase in CT intensity and led to the treatment planning systems mistreating the iodinated spacer as a high-density material. Among the structures adjacent to the target, neurovascular bundles showed the largest dose difference, up to 350 cGy or about 5% of the prescribed dose with NM. Compared to the WM scenario, dose distribution similarity and GI passing ratios were lower in the NM scenario. CONCLUSION: The inaccurate CT intensity-based material for iodinated spacer resulted in errors in PT dose calculation. We found that the error was negligible if the iodinated spacer was replaced with water. Water density can be used as a clinically accessible and convenient alternative material override to true spacer material.

RESUMO

The transient pulses caused by local faults of rolling bearings are an important measurement information for fault diagnosis. However, extracting transient pulses from complex nonstationary vibration signals with a large amount of background noise is challenging, especially in the early stage. To improve the anti-noise ability and detect incipient faults, a novel signal de-noising method based on enhanced time-frequency manifold (ETFM) and kurtosis-wavelet dictionary is proposed. First, to mine the high-dimensional features, the C-C method and Cao's method are combined to determine the embedding dimension and delay time of phase space reconstruction. Second, the input parameters of the liner local tangent space arrangement (LLTSA) algorithm are determined by the grid search method based on Renyi entropy, and the dimension is reduced by manifold learning to obtain the ETFM with the highest time-frequency aggregation. Finally, a kurtosis-wavelet dictionary is constructed for selecting the best atom and eliminating the noise and reconstruct the defective signal. Actual simulations showed that the proposed method is more effective in noise suppression than traditional algorithms and that it can accurately reproduce the amplitude and phase information of the raw signal.

RESUMO

Background: Qinxiang Qingjie (QXQJ), an oral solution containing various Chinese herbs, is indicated for pediatric upper respiratory tract infections. The treatment of influenza also shows potential advantages in shortening the duration of illness and improving symptoms. However, there is still a lack of high-quality clinical evidence to support this. The trial was to explore the efficacy and safety of QXQJ for treating pediatric influenza and provide an evidence-based basis for expanding its applicability. Methods: A randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, positive-controlled, multicenter clinical trial was conducted in 14 hospitals in China. Children aged 1-13 years with influenza and "exterior and interior heat syndromes" as defined by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) were randomly assigned to two groups with 1:1 radio. Children in the test group received QXQJ oral solution and oseltamivir simulant, while the control group received oseltamivir phosphate granules and QXQJ simulant. The duration of treatment was five days, followed by a two-day follow-up period. The primary endpoint was the clinical recovery time. Secondary endpoints included the time to defervescence, incidences of complications and severe or critical influenza, negative conversion rate, improvement of TCM syndromes, and safety profiles of the therapeutics, which mainly contained the adverse clinical events and adverse drug reactions. Results: A total of 231 children were randomized to either the QXQJ (n=117) or oseltamivir (n=114) group. The FAS and PPS results showed that both groups experienced a median clinical recovery time of three days (P>0.05). The median time to defervescence of both groups were 36 hours in FAS and PPS (P>0.05), and two groups did not differ in terms of the other secondary endpoints (P>0.05). 14 patients (12.39%) in the QXQJ group and 14 patients (12.50%) in the oseltamivir group reported at least one adverse event, respectively. One serious adverse event occurred in the QXQJ group. There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse events or adverse drug reactions between the groups. Conclusions: The efficacy of QXQJ oral solution was comparable to that of oseltamivir for treating influenza in children, with an acceptable safety profile. Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR1900021060.

RESUMO

Superphosphate fertilizer (SSP) as an additive can reduce the nitrogen loss and increase available phosphorus in composting but few studies investigated the effect of SSP addition on heavy metal and microbial communities. In this study, different ratios (10%, 18%, 26%) of SSP were added into pig manure composting to assess the changes of heavy metal (Cu, Mn, As, Zn, and Fe) fractions, bacterial and fungal communities as well as their interactions. SSP addition at 18% had lower ecological risk but still increased the bioavailability of Cu, Mn, and Fe in composts compared to control. Adding 18% SSP into compost decreased bacterial number and increased the fungal diversity compared to CK. Redundancy analysis indicated heavy metal fractions correlated significantly with bacterial and fungal community compositions in composting with 18% SSP. Network analysis showed adding 18% SSP increased microbial interaction and positive cooperation especially enhanced the proportion of Proteobacteria and Ascomycota.

RESUMO

High levels of circulating estradiol (E2) are associated with increased risk of breast cancer, whereas its relationship with breast cancer prognosis is still unclear. We evaluated the effect of E2 concentration on survival endpoints among 8766 breast cancer cases diagnosed between 2005 and 2017 from the Tianjin Breast Cancer Cases Cohort. Levels of serum E2 were measured in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) between quartile of E2 levels and overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of breast cancer. The penalized spline was then used to test for non-linear relationships between E2 (continuous variable) and survival endpoints. 612 deaths and 982 progressions occurred over follow-up through 2017. Compared to women in the quartile 3, the highest quartile of E2 was associated with reduced risk of both PFS in pre-menopausal women (HR 1.79, 95% CI 1.17-2.75, P = 0.008) and OS in post-menopausal women (HR 1.35, 95% CI 1.04-1.74, P = 0.023). OS and PFS in pre-menopausal women exhibited a nonlinear relation ("L-shaped" and "U-shaped", respectively) with E2 levels. However, there was a linear relationship in post-menopausal women. Moreover, patients with estrogen receptor-negative (ER-negative) breast cancer showed a "U-shaped" relationship with OS and PFS in pre-menopausal women. Pre-menopausal breast cancer patients have a plateau stage of prognosis at the intermediate concentrations of E2, whereas post-menopausal patients have no apparent threshold, and ER status may have an impact on this relationship.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We proposed a Haar feature-based method for tracking endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) probe in diagnostic computed tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans for guiding hydrogel injection without external tracking hardware. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of implementing our method with phantom and patient images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our methods included the pre-simulation section and Haar features extraction steps. Firstly, the simulated EUS set was generated based on anatomic information of interpolated CT/MRI images. Secondly, the efficient Haar features were extracted from simulated EUS images to create a Haar feature dictionary. The relative EUS probe position was estimated by searching the best matched Haar feature vector of the dictionary with Haar feature vector of target EUS images. The utilization of this method was validated using EUS phantom and patient CT/MRI images. RESULTS: In the phantom experiment, we showed that our Haar feature-based EUS probe tracking method can find the best matched simulated EUS image from a simulated EUS dictionary which includes 123 simulated images. The errors of all four target points between the real EUS image and the best matched EUS images were within 1 mm. In the patient CT/MRI scans, the best matched simulated EUS image was selected by our method accurately, thereby confirming the probe location. However, when applying our method in MRI images, our method is not always robust due to the low image resolution. CONCLUSIONS: Our Haar feature-based method is capable to find the best matched simulated EUS image from the dictionary. We demonstrated the feasibility of our method for tracking EUS probe without external tracking hardware, thereby guiding the hydrogel injection between the head of the pancreas and duodenum.
