BACKGROUND: Jubaea chilensis (Molina) Baillon, is a uniquely large palm species endemic to Chile. It is under threatened status despite its use as an ornamental species throughout the world. This research seeks to identify the phyllotaxis of the species based on an original combination of non-destructive data acquisition technologies, namely Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in saplings and young individuals and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) in standing specimens, and a novel analysis methodology. RESULTS: Two phyllotaxis parameters, parastichy pairs and divergence angle, were determined by analyzing specimens at different developmental stages. Spiral phyllotaxis patterns of J. chilensis progressed in complexity from parastichy pairs (3,2) and (3,5) in juvenile specimens and (5,3), (8,5) and (8,13) for adult specimens. Divergence angle was invariable and averaged 136.9°, close to the golden angle. Phyllotactic pattern changes associated with establishment phase, the adult vegetative and the adult reproductive phases were observed. Both technologies, MRI and TLS proved to be adequate for the proposed analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding phyllotactic transitions may assist identification of developmental stages of wild J. chilensis specimens. The proposed methodology may also be useful for the study of other palm species.

Cookies are one of the most consumed bakery products and the formulation could be modified to consider them as a functional food. The high amylose maize starch (HAMS) is considered as resistant starch (RS) type 2. The objective of this work was to assess the starch fractions, texture, sensory properties and acceptability of wheat flour cookies added with HAMS at different percentages. Adding 15% of HAMS into the formulation increased the amount of RS from 2.3 to 12.8%. In sensory analysis, children and adults showed a good acceptability of cookies since the addition of HAMS did not result in significant changes in flavor or color. Cookies made with HAMS could be considered as functional foods since they had an acceptable texture and low caloric content.

BACKGROUNDS AND AIMS: Functional-structural models are interesting tools to relate environmental and management conditions with forest growth. Their three-dimensional images can reveal important characteristics of wood used for industrial products. Like virtual laboratories, they can be used to evaluate relationships among species, sites and management, and to support silvicultural design and decision processes. Our aim was to develop a functional-structural model for radiata pine (Pinus radiata) given its economic importance in many countries. METHODS: The plant model uses the L-system language. The structure of the model is based on operational units, which obey particular rules, and execute photosynthesis, respiration and morphogenesis, according to their particular characteristics. Plant allometry is adhered to so that harmonic growth and plant development are achieved. Environmental signals for morphogenesis are used. Dynamic turnover guides the normal evolution of the tree. Monthly steps allow for detailed information of wood characteristics. The model is independent of traditional forest inventory relationships and is conceived as a mechanistic model. For model parameterization, three databases which generated new information relating to P. radiata were analysed and incorporated. KEY RESULTS: Simulations under different and contrasting environmental and management conditions were run and statistically tested. The model was validated against forest inventory data for the same sites and times and against true crown architectural data. The performance of the model for 6-year-old trees was encouraging. Total height, diameter and lengths of growth units were adequately estimated. Branch diameters were slightly overestimated. Wood density values were not satisfactory, but the cyclical pattern and increase of growth rings were reasonably well modelled. CONCLUSIONS: The model was able to reproduce the development and growth of the species based on mechanistic formulations. It may be valuable in assessing stand behaviour under different environmental and management conditions, assisting in decision-making with regard to management, and as a research tool to formulate hypothesis regarding forest tree growth and development.

This work explores the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for nondestructive determination of wood characteristics and for 3D wood modeling. In this context, one of the applications under development is the automatic recognition and reconstruction of rings from transversal images obtained from MRI scanners. The algorithm analyzes a set of transversal MRI images, detecting and reconstructing growth ring edges. The information generated is then interpolated in order to obtain an accurate 3D picture of the log and its fundamental constituents (individual rings, knots, defects, etc). Results also show that the technique has potential for defect recognition, providing a powerful tool for future developments in wood analysis. The results are encouraging and further research is needed to develop automatic detection not only of rings, but also of different types of defects that are of paramount importance in the sawmill and plywood industries.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging opens an alternative way to analyze wood structures using a non-destructive technology. It provides high resolution, compound-based contrast manipulation and increased data acquisition flexibility. The technique is particularly useful for tree logs, since they present several characteristics that can be used to reduce the long scan time. This study proposes a method that takes advantage of the log cylindrical symmetry, acquiring transverse 1-D projections with a helical and undersampled pattern. Linear interpolation is used to estimate the skipped data and slice images are reconstructed by filtered backprojection. The sequence is improved using selective multi-pass scanning, without major variations of the scan time. Computer simulations and experimental results show that the proposed technique can increase the scan speed by a factor of 6, while maintaining the ability to identify typical tree log characteristics.
