This study outlines the procedures used for collecting, processing, and categorizing data on 16 new mammal species for mainland Portugal, belonging to four taxonomic groups: Eulipotyphla (1), Chiroptera (4), Rodentia (2), and Cetacea (9). Data collection and processing encompassed field and lab work and bibliographic compilation. Data categorization involves, whenever possible, the assessment of the approximate number of mature individuals in populations, the extent of occurrence, and the area of occupancy. The approach employed led to the classification of eight out of the 16 species into an IUCN category: two non-volant small mammals and one bat species were designated as Vulnerable, requiring ongoing monitoring; one rodent and three cetaceans were assigned to Data Deficient due to insufficient available information; and a single bat species was classified as Least Concern due to the high abundance of local populations. For small mammals and bats, alterations to natural systems and climate change emerged as the most relevant threatening factors, while for cetaceans, human activities such as fishing, commercial shipping, and tourism were identified as the primary survival risks. It is recommended to maintain action programs that assist in defining strategic orientations for the implementation of conservation measures on a case-by-case basis.

Multiheme cytochromes located in different compartments are crucial for extracellular electron transfer in the bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens to drive important environmental processes and biotechnological applications. Recent studies have unveiled that for particular sets of electron terminal acceptors, discrete respiratory pathways selectively recruit specific cytochromes from both the inner and outer membranes. However, such specificity was not observed for the abundant periplasmic cytochromes, namely the triheme cytochrome family PpcA-E. In this work, the distinctive NMR spectroscopic signatures of these proteins in different redox states were explored to monitor pairwise interactions and electron transfer reactions between each pair of cytochromes. The results showed that the five proteins interact transiently and can exchange electrons between each other revealing intra-promiscuity within the members of this family. This discovery is discussed in the light of the establishment of an effective electron transfer network by this pool of cytochromes. This network is advantageous to the bacteria as it enables the maintenance of the functional working potential redox range within the cells.

Cetacean poxvirus (CePV) is the causative agent of tattoo skin disease (TSD) in dolphins, porpoises and whales, a condition characterized by pinhole, ring-like lesions or generalized tattoo-like skin lesions. This study genetically characterized cetacean poxviruses from stranded animals along mainland Portugal. Samples from skin lesions compatible with TSD were obtained from 4 odontocete species (Delphinus delphis, Stenella coeruleoalba, Phocoena phocoena, and Tursiops truncatus) and analyzed using a conventional PCR assay targeting the DNA polymerase gene partially. Among the positive samples (n = 29, 65.9%), a larger DNA polymerase gene fragment was obtained, allowing a robust phylogenetic analysis. Nineteen samples (43.2%) were successfully amplified and sequenced using Sanger sequencing. By combining 11 of these sequences with those from public databases, a maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree was constructed, revealing high heterogeneity within the group. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the genetic diversity, epidemiology, phylogenetics, and evolution of CePV.

Impact of climate change is expected to be especially noticeable at the edges of a species' distribution, where they meet suboptimal habitat conditions. In Mauritania and Iberia, two genetically differentiated populations of harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) form an ecotype adapted to local upwelling conditions and distinct from other ecotypes further north on the NE Atlantic continental shelf and in the Black Sea. By analyzing the evolution of mitochondrial genetic variation in the Iberian population between two temporal cohorts (1990-2002 vs. 2012-2015), we report a substantial decrease in genetic diversity. Phylogenetic analyses including neighboring populations identified two porpoises in southern Iberia carrying a divergent haplotype closely related to those from the Mauritanian population, yet forming a distinct lineage. This suggests that Iberian porpoises may not be as isolated as previously thought, indicating possible dispersion from Mauritania or an unknown population in between, but none from the northern ecotype. Demo-genetic scenario testing by approximate Bayesian computation showed that the rapid decline in the Iberian mitochondrial diversity was not simply due to the genetic drift of a small population, but models support instead a substantial decline in effective population size, possibly resulting from environmental stochasticity, prey depletion, or acute fishery bycatches. These results illustrate the value of genetics time series to inform demographic trends and emphasize the urgent need for conservation measures to ensure the viability of this small harbor porpoise population in Iberian waters.

This study characterises microplastics in small cetaceans on the coast of Portugal and assesses the relationship between several biological variables and the amount of detected microplastics. The intestines of 38 stranded dead cetaceans were processed in the laboratory, with digestion methods adapted to the amount of organic matter in each sample. The influence of several biological and health variables (e.g., species, sex, body condition) on the amount of microplastics was tested in all analysed species and particularly in common dolphins, due to the larger number of available samples. Most of the analysed individuals had microplastics in the intestine (92.11%), with harbour porpoises revealing a significantly higher median number of microplastics than common dolphins, probably due to their different diets, use of habitat and feeding strategies. None of the other tested variables significantly influenced the number of microplastics. Moreover, the microplastics found should not be enough to cause physical or chemical sublethal effects, although the correlation between microplastic ingestion and plastic additive bioaccumulation in cetacean tissues requires further investigation. Future monitoring in biota should rely on improved and standardised protocols for microplastic analyses in complex samples to allow for accurate analyses of larger samples and spatio-temporal comparisons.

The Iberian harbour porpoise population is small and fisheries bycatch has been described as one of its most important threats. Data on harbour porpoise strandings collected by the Portuguese and Galician stranding networks between 2000 and 2020 are indicative of a recent mortality increase in the western Iberian coast (particularly in northern Portugal). Overall, in Portugal and Galicia, individuals stranded due to confirmed fishery interaction represented 46.98% of all analysed porpoises, and individuals stranded due to probable fishery interaction represented another 10.99% of all analysed porpoises. Considering the Portuguese annual abundance estimates available between 2011 and 2015, it was possible to calculate that an annual average of 207 individuals was removed from the population in Portuguese waters alone, which largely surpasses the potential biological removal (PBR) estimates (22 porpoises, CI: 12-43) for the same period. These results are conservative and bycatch values from strandings are likely underestimated. A structured action plan accounting for new activities at sea is needed to limit the Iberian porpoise population decline. Meanwhile, there is an urgent need for a fishing effort reorganization to directly decrease porpoise mortality.

We report the complete and circularized genome sequences of nine strains of Xanthomonas phaseoli pv. phaseoli and Xanthomonas citri pv. fuscans, which cause common bacterial blight of bean. These assemblies provide high-quality material for functional and evolutionary studies of these legume pathogens.

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of nodal recurrence after surgery for non-functioning pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NF-PanNETs) and its predictors have been poorly investigated. This study aimed to compare clinicopathologic features and survival between patients with nodal relapse and those with distant relapse and to identify predictors of nodal relapse after surgery for NF-PanNETs. METHODS: All patients (n = 321) submitted to surgery for NF-PanNETs were included. Nodal recurrence was defined as the presence of one or more enlarged LNs at high-quality radiologic examinations and always confirmed by 68Ga-DOTA-PET or biopsy. RESULTS: Altogether, 21 patients (6 %) experienced nodal (± distant) relapse, and 35 patients (11 %) had distant recurrence alone. Isolated nodal recurrence occurred for 23 % of patients with recurrence. Overall, 11 patients died of disease, one of whom (pT3N1G3) had an isolated nodal relapse. The rate of LN metastases (81 % vs 54 %; p = 0.044) and median number of positive LNs (PLN) (3 vs 0; p = 0.019) both were significantly higher for the patients with nodal (± distant) relapse than for those with distant relapse alone. Microvascular invasion (p = 0.046), T stage (p = 0.004), N stage (N1 [p = 0.049]; N2 [p = 0.001]), M stage (p < 0.001), and necrosis (p = 0.011) independently predicted nodal relapse. After distal pancreatectomy (n = 182), 13 patients experienced nodal recurrence, 9 of whom had left paraortic LNs involvement. DISCUSSION: Lymph nodes are not rare sites of recurrence after surgery for NF-PanNETs. Lymph node involvement is a powerful determinant of nodal relapse. Nodal relapse frequently involves LNs that are not removed during standard lymphadenectomy.

Centrosomes are orbited by centriolar satellites, dynamic multiprotein assemblies nucleated by Pericentriolar material 1 (PCM1). To study the requirement for centriolar satellites, we generated mice lacking PCM1, a crucial component of satellites. Pcm1-/- mice display partially penetrant perinatal lethality with survivors exhibiting hydrocephalus, oligospermia, and cerebellar hypoplasia, and variably expressive phenotypes such as hydronephrosis. As many of these phenotypes have been observed in human ciliopathies and satellites are implicated in cilia biology, we investigated whether cilia were affected. PCM1 was dispensable for ciliogenesis in many cell types, whereas Pcm1-/- multiciliated ependymal cells and human PCM1-/- retinal pigmented epithelial 1 (RPE1) cells showed reduced ciliogenesis. PCM1-/- RPE1 cells displayed reduced docking of the mother centriole to the ciliary vesicle and removal of CP110 and CEP97 from the distal mother centriole, indicating compromised early ciliogenesis. Similarly, Pcm1-/- ependymal cells exhibited reduced removal of CP110 from basal bodies in vivo. We propose that PCM1 and centriolar satellites facilitate efficient trafficking of proteins to and from centrioles, including the departure of CP110 and CEP97 to initiate ciliogenesis, and that the threshold to trigger ciliogenesis differs between cell types.

The Iberian porpoise population is small and under potentially unsustainable removal by fisheries bycatch. Recently, a marine Site of Community Importance (SCI) was legally approved in Portugal, but no measures ensued to promote porpoise conservation. Information about porpoise abundance and distribution is fundamental to guide any future conservation measures. Annual aerial surveys conducted between 2011 and 2015 show a low overall porpoise abundance and density (2254 individuals; 0.090 ind/km2, CV = 21.99%) in the Portuguese coast. The highest annual porpoise estimates were registered in 2013 (3207 individuals, 0.128 ind/km2), followed by a sharp decrease in 2014 (1653 individuals, 0.066 ind/km2). The porpoise density and abundance estimated in 2015 remained lower than the 2013 estimates. A potential distribution analysis of the Iberian porpoise population was performed using ensembles of small models (ESMs) with MaxEnt and showed that the overall habitat suitability is particularly high in the Portuguese northern area. The analysis also suggested a different pattern in porpoise potential distribution across the study period. These results emphasize the importance of further porpoise population assessments to fully understand the spatial and temporal porpoise habitat use in the Iberian Peninsula as well as the urgent need for on-site threat mitigation measures.

Electroactive Geobacter bacteria can perform extracellular electron transfer and present a wide metabolic versatility. These bacteria reduce organic, toxic and radioactive compounds, and produce electric current while interacting with electrodes, making them interesting targets for numerous biotechnological applications. Their global electrochemical responses rely on an efficient interface between the inside and the cell's exterior, which is driven by the highly abundant periplasmic triheme PpcA-family cytochromes. The functional features of these cytochromes have been studied in G. sulfurreducens and G. metallireducens, and although they share a high degree of structural homology and sequence identity, their properties are quite distinct. In this work, the heme axial ligand geometries and the magnetic properties of PpcF from G. metallireducens were determined. The data obtained constitute important constraints for the determination of its solution structure in the oxidized state and indicate that the (i) heme core architecture; (ii) axial ligands geometries and (iii) magnetic properties of the cytochrome are conserved compared to the other members of the PpcA-families. Furthermore, the results also indicate that the heme arrangement is crucial to maintain an intrinsic regulation of the protein's redox properties and hence its electron transfer efficiency and functionality.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic imaging, management, and follow-up of a dog that presented with sequential, bilateral, spontaneous, subcapsular and perirenal hemorrhage (Wunderlich syndrome) due to bilateral renal arterial malformations. CASE SUMMARY: A 9-year-old intact male Field Spaniel presented for acute onset abdominal pain following a possible syncopal episode. Abdominal ultrasonography, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, and computed tomography (CT) revealed right-sided perirenal hemorrhage that extended into the peritoneum. The dog was discharged following stabilization with analgesia, fluid therapy, and tranexamic acid. One month later, the patient presented with identical clinical signs. A CT scan at this stage revealed bilateral kidney infarcts with new left-sided perirenal hemorrhage. Abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced ultrasound were repeated and showed similar findings. Follow up with four-dimensional CT angiography revealed bilateral renal arterial malformations, likely causing spontaneous renal hemorrhage and secondary subcapsular hematomas , retroperitoneal and peritoneal hemorrhage. UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED: This is the first reported case of both bilateral renal arterial malformations and bilateral spontaneous subcapsular and perirenal hemorrhage in the absence of neoplasia, coagulopathy, or trauma in a dog. Advanced imaging modalities, including selective angiography, were required to diagnose this condition successfully. Arterial malformations should be considered as a differential diagnosis in cases of hemoretroperitoneum. Nephrectomy due to perirenal hemorrhage should be cautiously considered, especially in the absence of angiography, because of the sequential bilateral nature of this case. Conservative management in this case resulted in a good long-term outcome 10 months later.

The role and tasks performed by hospital volunteers (HV), their relationship with other stakeholders and the management of volunteers, are controversial topics, not widely explored in literature. Through an exploratory study, which incorporated the collection and analysis of qualitative data, involving 46 interviews with volunteers, staff and hospital administration from three hospitals in Portugal, we analyze hospital volunteers, as well as the tasks they perform, how these tasks are assigned, and how they relate to other stakeholders. As a result, we conclude that the job definition of HV is generic, open to different interpretations and that the assigned functions of HV are not known from all stakeholders. This problem can have negative repercussions in the relationship between volunteers and health professionals, potentially fostering conflict. Nevertheless, most respondents are satisfied with the current format of volunteer management.

Objective: The present study aims to explore the mediation role of self-regulation on health-related behaviors adoption or maintenance, mental health, and well-being during the COVID-19 confinement in a sample of adults in Portugal. Design: One-hundred fifty individuals (118 females, 32 males; Mage = 33.57 year; SD = 12.71) filled an online survey to assess self-regulation, healthy behaviors, mental health, and well-being perception, during the early months of the pandemic (June-August, 2020). Main Outcome Measures: Self-regulation capacity, adoption or maintenance of healthy habits, mental health, including stress management, and the perception of one's well-being were evaluated using a structural equation model (SEM). Results: Self-regulation had direct effects on healthy habits and mental health and indirect effects on well-being and mental health mediated by healthy habits. In specific, a positive direct effect on healthy habits (ß = 0.497, p < 0.001) and a negative direct effect on mental health (ß = -0.428, p < 0.001); and a positive indirect effect on well-being perception, mediated by healthy behaviors and mental health (ß = 0.253, p = 0.003), and a negative indirect effect on mental health, mediated by healthy habits (ß = -0.208, p = 0.003). Additionally, healthy habits exerted direct effects on well-being perception and mental health. A positive direct effect on well-being perception (ß = 0.254, p = 0.012), and a negative direct effect on mental health (ß = -0.418, p < 0.001) were further observed. No direct effect of mental health was observed in well-being perception (ß = -0.199, p = 0.068). Finally, a negative correlation was observed between self-regulation and weeks of confinement (r = -0.208, p = 0.021). Conclusion: Self-regulation seems to be a good indicator of adopting a healthy lifestyle and better mental health and well-being in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Future preventive actions and interventions to build long-term global preparedness for future health emergencies, such as COVID-19, should explore the importance of self-regulation as an important individual and collective protective factor.

Floating Dangerous Debris For Cetaceans (DDFC) and cetacean abundances were assessed by shipboard visual surveys off continental Portugal. Plastic litter (other than fishing gear) was the most abundant category, corresponding to 56.53% of the total recorded DDFC. Areas of DDFC and cetacean potential overlap suggest that cetaceans are generally exposed to DDFC at different risk levels within the study area. The highest concentration areas of DDFC and cetaceans did not overlap, whereas lower DDFC concentration areas (70% kernel probability contour) overlapped with 45% of the distribution area obtained for cetaceans. Future marine litter management measures (prevention or mitigation) should be focused on the predicted high DDFC-cetacean interaction risk area in the central region of the study. DDFC are representative of the overall floating litter distribution and future floating litter assessments could be based on DDFC categories alone.

PURPOSE: Loop ileostomy is performed in rectal cancer surgery to decrease the impact of anastomotic leak but it is associated with a significant complication rate. This study aimed to analyze the morbidity related to diverting ileostomy and to identify factors predictive of complications related to stoma management and reversal, as well as conversion into a permanent ileostomy. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 112 patients submitted to oncological rectal resection and defunctioning ileostomy in a Portuguese colorectal unit between March 2012 and March 2019. RESULTS: Loop ileostomy was responsible for 13% of index surgery morbidity and 15% of patients' readmissions due to high output, stoma stenosis and parastomal hernia. Ileostomy was reversed in 89% cases with 7% Clavien-Dindo ≥ IIIb complications. An association was established between diabetes and higher stoma management morbidity (OR: 3.28 [95% CI: 1.039-10.426]. p = 0.041). Likewise, diabetes (OR: 0.17 [95% CI: 0.038; 6.90], p=0.015), oncological disease stage ≥ III (OR: 0.10 [95% CI: 0.005; 0.656], p=0.047) and index rectal surgery morbidity (OR: 0.23 [95% CI: 0.052; 0.955], p=0.041) were associated with less ileostomy closure. Complications of the index surgery also related to higher stoma reversal morbidity (OR: 5.11 [95% CI: 1.665; 16.346], p=0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes and complications of index rectal surgery were identified as predictive of ileostomy morbidity, closure rate and associated complications. It is essential to adjust treatment decisions to patient's morbidity risk and adopt a more selective approach concerning the use of an ileostomy.

O objetivo geral do presente artigo é contextualizar o Psicodrama no modelo de intervenção psicoterápica on-line, e o objetivo específico é demonstrar a viabilidade do atendimento psicodramático on-line com adultos a partir de descrições de sessões sociátricas por meio dessa modalidade. Os recursos psicodramáticos utilizados nas sessões sociátricas em destaque são Jogos dramáticos, Psicodrama Interno, Psicoterapia da Relação e Psicodrama Bipessoal com dramatização em cena aberta. Os resultados obtidos confirmam que o Psicodrama rompe a conserva da necessidade da psicoterapia presencial para que a sociatria ocorra, abrindo espaço para novos caminhos.
The general objective of this article is to contextualize Psychodrama in the online psychotherapeutic intervention model, and the specific objective is to demonstrate the viability of online psychodramatic care with adults from the description of sociatric sessions through this modality. The psychodramatic resources used in the highlighted sociatric sessions are Dramatic Games, Internal Psychodrama, Relationship Psychotherapy and Bipersonal Psychodrama with dramatization in an open scene. The results obtained confirm that Psychodrama breaks the need for face-to-face psychotherapy for sociatrics to occur, opening space for new paths.
El objetivo general de este artículo es contextualizar el Psicodrama en el modelo de intervención psicoterapéutica online, y el objetivo específico es demostrar la viabilidad de la atención psicodramática online con adultos a partir de la descripción de sesiones sociológicas a través de esta modalidad. Los recursos psicodramáticos utilizados en las sesiones sociátricas destacadas son Juegos Dramáticos, Psicodrama Interno, Psicoterapia de Relaciones y Psicodrama Bipersonal con dramatización en escena abierta. Los resultados obtenidos confirman que el Psicodrama rompe con la necesidad de la psicoterapia presencial para que ocurra la sociatría, abriendo espacios a nuevos caminos.

A 6-year-old, male-neutered, domestic short-haired cat was referred for further management of a 3-month history of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. The cat visited the hospital on 3 occasions during a 3-week time period. Hyperglycemia was documented at all visits. The cat initially presented with evidence of hypovolemia, cranial abdominal pain, and dehydration. Moderate hyperglycemia, mild ketonemia, and severe hypokalemia were documented. A 3â¯×â¯2 cm skin lesion with associated alopecia and erythema was first noticed at a routine follow-up examination (visit 2) 1 week later. A diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis was made 6 days later. The previously identified skin lesion now measured 6â¯×â¯2.5 cm. Two episodes of respiratory distress were identified at this visit, with no evidence of cardiac or pulmonary pathology. The cat developed a moderate anemia (packed cell volume 16 %, total solids 7.9 g/dL) on the fifth day of hospitalization. Fluid therapy, electrolyte supplementation, regular insulin, anti-emetic, and analgesia medications were administered during visits 1 and 3. Due to development of anemia, suspected pulmonary thromboembolism events and progression of skin lesions, euthanasia was elected. A diagnosis of cutaneous vasculopathy with secondary ischemic necrosis was made postmortem and pulmonary thromboembolism was confirmed. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of cutaneous vasculopathy and pulmonary thromboembolism in a cat with confirmed diabetes mellitus, warranting further research to assess if hypercoagulability is common in this patient population, as routine thromboprophylaxis and anticoagulation may be potentially indicated.
