RESUMO

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Long COVID (LC) is now prevalent in many countries. Little evidence exists regarding how this chronic condition should be treated, but guidelines suggest for most people it can be managed symptomatically in primary care. The Lightning Process is a trademarked positive psychology focused self-management programme which has shown to be effective in reducing fatigue and accompanying symptoms in other chronic conditions including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. Here we outline its novel application to two patients with LC who both reported improvements in fatigue and a range of physical and emotional symptoms post-treatment and at 3 months follow-up.

One theory to explain the existence of conspicuous solicitation is that it is a way for young to 'blackmail' carers into provisioning them, by threatening their own destruction. Fledgling birds offer a unique opportunity to investigate the 'blackmail theory', as their mobility enables them to influence the predation risk they face. We investigated a novel solicitation behaviour in fledgling pied babblers (Turdoides bicolor), where fledglings use their location to influence provisioning rates. We show that fledglings face a trade-off: the ground is a much more profitable location in terms of provisioning rate from adult carers, but they are at greater risk from predators owing to their limited flying ability and slow response to alarm calls. Young babbler fledglings move to the ground when hungry, signalling their state, and this stimulates adults to increase their provisioning rates. Once satiated, fledglings return to the safety of cover. By experimentally increasing terrestrial predation risk, we found that adults increased their provisioning rate to terrestrial but not arboreal fledglings. Thus, by moving to a riskier location, fledglings revealed their need and were able to manipulate adults to achieve higher provisioning rates. These results provide support for the 'blackmail theory'.

RESUMO

The extensor digitorum brevis manus is one of the rare anatomic variations which occur on the dorsum of the hand. Only some 295 articles were found worldwide in an extensive bibliographic review carried out in 2003. This muscle was dissected bilaterally on a male corpse at the Human Anatomy Laboratory of the Morphophysiological Department of the “Faculty of Medical Sciences of Minas Gerais”. It is an elongated, small muscle, originating at the carpal bones and at the extensor retinaculum and inserting into one of the tendons of the finger’s extensor muscle. Even though it does not present an essential function in the movement of the fingers nor the hand, it can lead to pain when hypertrophied, creating the need for clinical or even surgical treatment.

Data from numerous laboratories show that mitochondria isolated from livers treated acutely with glucagon have higher rates of state 3 respiration than control mitochondria. The purpose of the present study was to learn whether this phenomenon is an isolation artifact resulting from a stabilization of the mitochondrial membrane or whether it represents a real increase in the maximal respiratory capacity of liver cells due to glucagon treatment. Electron transport was measured through different spans of the electron transport chain by using ferricyanide as an alternate electron acceptor to O2. With isolated intact liver mitochondria, pretreatment with glucagon was found to cause an increase in electron flow, through both Complex I and Complex III, suggesting that the effect of glucagon was not specific for a single site in the electron transport chain. Using intact isolated hepatocytes, different results are obtained. Respiration was measured in isolated hepatocytes after quantitation of the hepatocyte mitochondrial content by assay of citrate synthase. Hepatocyte respiration could therefore be reported per mg of mitochondrial protein. By providing durohydroquinone to the cells, it was possible to measure electron flow from coenzyme Q to O2 in the absence of the physiological regulation of substrate supply. Likewise, the addition of carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone released the in situ mitochondria from control by the cytosolic ATP/ADP ratio and it was possible to measure maximal electron flow rates through Complex III. In the presence of carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone, electron flow was higher in mitochondria in the cell than in isolated mitochondria. Glucagon caused no increase in mitochondrial respiration in situ either in the presence of the physiological substrates or in the presence of durohydroquinone. The data obtained do not support a role for the electron transport chain as a target of glucagon action in hepatocytes.
