RESUMO

ABSTRACT This study aimed to review the most required imaging tests, their characteristics, and whether the primary choice is sufficient for lesion management. PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched. The included articles were case reports or series of aneurysmal bone cysts in the mandible or maxilla that had all the information about the case, from diagnosis to follow-up. The 32 included articles showed that the first imaging test required is a panoramic radiographic examination of the cases, with only a few choosing computed tomography as the first option. The treatment of choice is usually curettage, and 9 cases had recurrences, although 17 did not report follow-up. 2D imaging examinations were the most required type when diagnosing an aneurysmal bone cyst, but 3D examinations were necessary in many cases for better evaluation and to provide more details.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Some adjuvant treatments are available for Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) to help the pain and improve quality of life. Among these treatments is hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) which has presented controversial findings in the literature in recent years. This integrative review analyzed the results among studies published during the pas t 10 years using HBO. The PICO strategy was used and the databases PubMed, LILACS, and SCOPUS. The final search resulted in the inclusion of 7 articles. The main conclusion is that, in the majority of cases, using HBO as an adjuvant to the basic therapy improved the quality of life and/or pain of the patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the association of congenital cervical vertebrae anomalies (CVA) with the prevalence of cleft lip and palate (CLP) specifying the most frequent associations. METHODS: A meta-analysis was based on the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline. A search of the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus and Lilacs database was performed until March 2018. Clinical studies that evaluated CVA in individuals with CLP (experimental group) and without CLP (control group) was included. For the statistical analysis, the software Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (Biostat; Englewood, NJ) was used, with a p-value < 0.05 considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 10 articles were included, for a total of 2566 individuals with CLP and 2301 individuals without CLP. The meta-analysis indicated statistically significant differences and the group of individuals with CLP had an increased number of CVA when compared to the group of individuals without CLP (p < 0.05; 95% confidence interval, 2.41-6.11; heterogeneity: Q-value 32.8, I2 72.6%). CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that CVA are associated with the presence of CLP. Among the patients with CVA the most frequent anomalies were the deficiency of the posterior arch, followed by the fusion of cervical vertebrae. Individuals with cleft palate and those with unilateral cleft lip and palateCLP had an increased prevalence of CVA.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Tonsilloliths and abnormal stylohyoid complex may have similar symptoms to others of different aetiology. Individuals with cleft lip and palate describe similar symptoms because of the anatomical implications that are peculiar to this anomaly. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of abnormal stylohyoid complex and tonsilloliths on cone beam computed tomography in individuals with cleft lip and palate. METHODS: According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 66 CT scans out of of 2,794 were analysed, on i- Cat ® vision software with 0.8 index Kappa intra-examiner. RESULTS: The total prevalence of ossification of the incomplete stylohyoid complex in individuals with cleft lip and palate was 66.6%; the prevalence of these findings in females was 75% and 61.9% in males. The total prevalence of tonsilloliths was 7.5%. CONCLUSION: It is important to ascertain calcification of the stylohyoid complex and tonsilloliths in the radiological report, due to the anatomical proximity and similarsymptomatology to other orofacial impairments inindividuals with cleft lip and palate, focusing on females with oral cleft formation, patients with incisive trans foramen cleft and incisive post foramen cleft because they are more prevalent. Greater knowledge of the anatomical morphometry of individuals with cleft lip and palate greatly contributes towards the selection of clinical behaviours and the quality of life of these patients, since cleft lip and palateis one of the most common anomalies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The effect of periodontal infection on systemic diseases and conditions has been the subject of numerous studies worldwide. It is considered that periodontitis may influence the hyperinflammatory response in patients with severe asthma as a result of immuno-inflammatory changes. This study aims to evaluate the influence of periodontitis on severe asthma in adults. METHODS: A case-control study was carried out, comprising 220 adult individuals: 113 diagnosed with asthma (case group) and 107 without asthma diagnosis (control group). The diagnosis of periodontitis was established after a full clinical examination using probing depth, clinical attachment level, and bleeding on probing. The diagnosis of severe asthma was based on the criteria recommended by the Global Initiative of Asthma (2012). Descriptive analyses of the variables were performed, followed by bivariate analyses, using the χ(2) test. Association measurements (odds ratio [OR]), with and without adjustment for potential confounders, were obtained. A significance level of 5% was used. RESULTS: The ORunadjusted for the main association was 4.38 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.47 to 7.75). In the logistic regression model, after adjusting for age, education level, osteoporosis, smoking habit, and body mass index, the ORadjusted was 4.82 (95% CI = 2.66 to 8.76), which was statistically significant. Individuals with periodontal infection showed, approximately, five times more likelihood to have bronchial inflammation than those without such periodontal tissue infection. CONCLUSION: The findings demonstrate the influence of periodontitis on severe asthma, given that the frequency of periodontitis is higher in individuals with severe asthma than in those without a diagnosis of bronchial inflammation.
