RESUMO

The BiPo-3 detector is a low radioactive detector dedicated to measuring ultra-low natural contaminations of 208Tl and 214Bi in thin materials, initially developed to measure the radiopurity of the double ß decay source foils of the SuperNEMO experiment at the µBq/kg level. The BiPo-3 technique consists in installing the foil of interest between two thin ultra-radiopure scintillators coupled to low radioactive photomultipliers. The design and performances of the detector are presented. In this paper, the final results of the 208Tl and 214Bi activity measurements of the first enriched 82Se foils are reported for the first time, showing the capability of the detector to reach sensitivities in the range of some µBq/kg.

RESUMO

We report the results of a first experimental search for lepton number violation by four units in the neutrinoless quadruple-ß decay of ^{150}Nd using a total exposure of 0.19 kg yr recorded with the NEMO-3 detector at the Modane Underground Laboratory. We find no evidence of this decay and set lower limits on the half-life in the range T_{1/2}>(1.1-3.2)×10^{21} yr at the 90% C.L., depending on the model used for the kinematic distributions of the emitted electrons.

RESUMO

We report results from the NEMO-3 experiment based on an exposure of 1275 days with 661 g of (130)Te in the form of enriched and natural tellurium foils. The ßß decay rate of (130)Te is found to be greater than zero with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations and the half-life is measured to be T(½)(2ν) = [7.0 ± 0.9(stat) ± 1.1(syst)] × 10(20) yr. This represents the most precise measurement of this half-life yet published and the first real-time observation of this decay.

RESUMO

This article describes a prototype continuous flow ventricular assist device (CFVAD3) supported in magnetic bearings. The VAD is a small centrifugal four bladed pump. The pump's geometry is explained. The CFVAD3 is the first compact VAD completely supported in magnetic bearings. The magnetic bearings are composed of an inlet side actuator divided into eight pole sets, and an outlet side actuator, also divided into eight pole sets. The pump operating performance was tested and found to be within the design flow rate of up to 9 L/min, and head up to 170 mm Hg for human circulatory support. Magnetic bearing operation out of center positions under various operating orientations were measured and found to be < 1/6 of the bearing clearance, well within specifications. The expected magnetic bearing power loss has been calculated at approximately 6.5 watts.

RESUMO

Comprehensive elemental analysis of samples from the Bear Creek Valley near the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, and its floodplain have been performed in order to allow an unclassified assessment of possible elemental contamination within this area. A rapid ion Chromatographic method, with isocratic separation and micromembrane suppression is discussed within this paper for the analysis of iodide in soils, and floodplain ground waters. This developmental method will be used for future routine iodide analysis.

RESUMO

Clinically available blood pumps and those under development suffer from poor mechanical reliability and poor biocompatibility related to anatomic fit, hemolysis, and thrombosis. To alleviate these problems concurrently in a long-term device is a substantial challenge. Based on testing the performance of a prototype, and on our judgment of desired characteristics, we have configured an innovative ventricular assist device, the CFVAD4, for long-term use. The design process and its outcome, the CFVAD4 system configuration, is described. To provide unprecedented reliability and biocompatibility, magnetic bearings completely suspend the rotating pump impeller. The CFVAD4 uses a combination of passive (permanent) and active (electric) magnetic bearings, a mixed flow impeller, and a slotless 3-phase brushless DC motor. These components are shaped, oriented, and integrated to provide a compact, implantable, pancake-shaped unit for placement in the left upper abdominal quadrant of adult humans.

RESUMO

Hydrodynamic forces occur on lenses due to pressures created in tear films during squeeze motions. Pressures and squeeze forces are calculated for lenses with both flat and steepened base curve radii. A parabolic two-dimensional tear film tickness is assumed for calculation purposes. A tear film with a peripheral film thickness of one-half of the central film thickness produces over three times the squeeze force produced by a constant tear film thickness with the same central clearance. Also, the distance moved by the lens toward the corneal surface is determined.

RESUMO

The metabolism of (U--14C) glucose and its incorporation into acetylcholine were determined in vitro in fresh cortical biopsy samples from patients with Alzheimer's disease and controls. Synthesis of 14C acetylcholine was significantly reduced (60% and 67% reduction under stimulated and resting conditions, respectively) without significant changes in the overall metabolism of glucose (as measured by 14CO2 production). Acetylcholine synthesis was directly related to the activity of choline acetyltransferase. The changes in cholinergic markers reflected the severity of psychological defects. Acetylcholine synthesis was not reduced in biopsy samples from patients suffering from presenile dementia with no histological evidence of Alzheimer's disease.

RESUMO

The strain in thin flexible membranes representing human skin has been studied using moiré interferometry. A method of using a flexible coating of photographic emulsion was developed. The equations for use in differential interferometry were also derived for very large deformations. The method was applied to two types of cases: rectangular membranes subjected to a uniform axial strain, and membranes containing strain concentrators that represent bandages placed on the surface of the skin. Results for the former case were within 3% of exact results, while results near the concentrator indicate strain concentration factors ranging from -1.25 to 1.75.
