RESUMO

Enyne photocycloaddition with a 2-pyridone yields a mixture of products including amide-bridged 1,2,5-cyclooctatrienes, the first examples of enyne [4 + 4] adducts. Four regio- and stereochemical isomers of the [4 + 4] adduct are possible. All appear to be too strained to be isolated, but they have been identified as their [2 + 2] cyclobutane dimers. Cyclobutane and cyclobutene adducts have also been isolated, [2 + 2] addition products possibly related to the unstable [4 + 4] adducts via Cope rearrangement. Calculations suggest that [3,3] rearrangements have high energy barriers, however, making thermal interconversion unlikely.

RESUMO

The photochemistry of substituted cinnamyloxy silanes has been examined in both cyclohexane and acetonitrile solvents. Alkene isomerization occurs in addition to cycloaddition. Fluorescence quantum yields and excited singlet state lifetimes have been determined for each compound. We have used the information in order to better understand the regio- and stereoselectivity of photocycloaddition between silyl-tethered cinnamyl groups. This study allows us to conclude that the 2 + 2 photocycloaddition between alkenes is not a Woodward-Hoffmann orbital symmetry controlled event. The most consistent explanation for the excellent regio- and stereoselectivity is that the photocycloaddition is conformationally controlled.

RESUMO

Aziridines were formed by copper-catalyzed intramolecular nitrene addition to alkenes. The carbamate group was used as the tether between the alkene and the nitrene. Subsequent nucleophilic attack of the aziridine was accomplished using RSH, R2NH, N3-, or ROH as the nucleophile. This addition was found to be regio- and stereoselective. This methodology has been used to demonstrate its utility in the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of a 1,2-diamino-3-hydroxycyclohexane. This substitution pattern is found in natural products such as Tamiflu.

RESUMO

Benzyl phenyl sulfide has been used to investigate the photocleavage mechanism for benzyl-sulfur bonds. Four experiments have shown that the reaction goes through a radical intermediate. First, the photoproducts observed can all be justified by radical mechanisms. Second, the radical intermediate was trapped with a five hexenyl tether. Third, UV analysis of analogs for the 4-NO(2) derivative indicate no exciplex or electron transfer pathway. Fourth, no strong correlation is observed between sigma values and the quatum yields for loss of substituted benzyl phenyl sulide. The effect of oxygen on quantum yields is best observed after samples are thoroughly outgassed with consecutive freeze-pump-thaw cycles. It is shown that oxygen diminishes the substituent effect. Upon photolysis of the outgassed samples, the meta-substituted derivatives showed more significant variances than the para derivatives. The meta derivatives are most efficiently cleaved in the following order: 3-CN > 3-NO(2) > 3-CF(3) > 3-CH(3) > 3-OCH(3). These findings are justified by an increase in electron density of the radical ipso to the forming benzyl radical for the 3-OCH(3) derivative and a decrease in the electron density of the radical ipso to the forming benzyl radical for the 3-CN derivative.
