RESUMO

The performance of three approaches for macrobenthic classification in distinguishing communities subjected to different environmental conditions was compared: i) the traditional species-based approach; ii) a tolerance-based approach according to ecological groups of the AMBI index; and iii) a character-based approach using biological traits. We used a hierarchical sampling design including three progressively smaller spatial scales, considering that the environmental degradation influence benthic communities at the larger spatial scale. Despite small-scale spatial variations, all approaches performed similarly, distinguishing eutrophic from non-eutrophic benthic communities as they varied significantly at the larger scale, corresponding to the scale at which human induced changes act. Our results suggest that all three methodological approaches could be used as operational criteria to assess estuarine environmental quality, and despite more meaningful, there is still a degree of subjectivity in functional approaches, associated to the lack of more detailed information on macrofaunal life-cycles and levels of tolerance to disturbance.

RESUMO

The aim of this review was to investigate the effectiveness of counselling and other self-management-based therapies on muscle and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain relief and increasing the functional abilities of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A systematic literature review was conducted by three independent reviewers and included articles published up to 2012. PubMed and Cochrane Library electronic databases were used in addition to hand-searching to assess clinical outcomes for counselling and self-management approaches for TMD treatment. The review yielded 581 records that were narrowed down to 7. All included studies were classified as blind-randomized controlled clinical trials. The selected articles analysed revealed that counselling was able to improve tenderness upon masticatory muscle palpation and maximum mouth opening with and without pain in patients with TMD, with similar results to those of interocclusal appliances approaches. Thus, counselling- and self-management-based therapies could be considered a conservative low-cost and beneficial treatment alternative for treating TMD to potentially improve psychological domains and remove harmful behaviours for the control of the signs and symptoms of TMD.

RESUMO

The aim of this article is to investigate patient satisfaction, survival rate of implants, and prosthetic complications or maintenance for rehabilitation with removable partial dentures associated with implants in mandibular Kennedy class I and II cases. A systematic literature review was conducted by three independent reviewers including articles published from January 1981 through September 2011. Medline and Cochrane Library electronic databases were used in addition to hand searching to assess clinical outcomes for mandibular implant-supported removable partial denture with distal extension. This review yielded 1751 records that were narrowed down to 5. The studies revealed implant survival rates ranging from 95% to 100% with one failure reported of 98 implants. The removable partial dentures associated with implant in mandibular free-end arches showed some complications and need of repair for relining, pitting of the healing abutment, replacement of resilient component of the attachment, damage in framework, screw loosening and damage in acrylic denture base. Patient satisfaction was evaluated through a five-point questionnaire, and results ranged between 4.12 and 5.0, considering 1 as the least favourable situation. The literature review showed increase in patient satisfaction and high survival rates of implants associated with mandibular removable partial dentures with distal extensions. However, some complications and need of prosthetic repair were reported. Although this treatment approach could represent a low-cost and beneficial rehabilitation for free-end mandibular ridges, the lack of controlled and randomised well-designed clinical trials suggests further studies with more representative samples to validate the outcomes of this treatment modality.

RESUMO

Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) is a class of enzymes where the substrate identification is particularly important to know. It would help medicinal chemists to design drugs with lower side effects due to drug-drug interactions and to extensive genetic polymorphism. Herein, we discuss the application of the 2D and 3D-similarity searches in identifying reference structures with higher capacity to retrieve substrates of three important CYP enzymes (CYP2C9, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4). On the basis of the complementarities of multiple reference structures selected by different similarity search methods, we proposed the fusion of their individual Tanimoto scores into a consensus Tanimoto score (T(consensus)). Using this new score, true positive rates of 63% (CYP2C9) and 81% (CYP2D6) were achieved with false positive rates of 4% for the CYP2C9-CYP2D6 data set. Extended similarity searches were carried out on a validation data set, and the results showed that by using the T(consensus) score, not only the area of a ROC graph increased, but also more substrates were recovered at the beginning of a ranked list.

Coefficients of variation (CV) were taken from several researches published in Brazil, with emphasis on broilers performance and their most studied characteristics, such as weight gain, feed consumption, feed:weight gain ratio, mortality, viability, body weight and yields of carcass, breast, legs, abdominal fat, wings and back. The purpose of the study was to establish CV bands which can guide the evaluation of each variable in future experiments. Based on relations between the median (Md) and pseudosigma (PS), a table was created with suggested intervals for the cited parameters. Larger coefficient of variation intervals were observed for abdominal fat yield. The other variables showed relatively low CV interval bands.

RESUMO

Tetralogy of Fallot was diagnosed in a 30 month-old Cocker Spaniel female, through physical, radiographic, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic exams. The animal was submitted to a palliative surgical correction, the Blalock-Taussig technique, and 46 months after the surgery, no signs of cardiopulmonary decompensation were observed

RESUMO

Cross-linked, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel was used to concentrate avian influenza virus from allantoic fluid. Placing the gel in virus-infected allantoic fluid at 4 degrees C caused the gel to swell and absorb small molecular weight solutes, while excluding avian influenza virus and other large particles. Warming the gel to 37 degrees C or more caused the gel to collapse. The gel remained functional after sterilization in an autoclave and could be reused to concentrate other samples of allantoic fluid. Using a combined concentration and elution technique, we were able to achieve an average of 84.2% virus recovery, while reducing the fluid volume from 90 ml to 7.6 ml.
