RESUMO

The use of local antimicrobial agents, such as the chlorhexidine chip, should be used cautiously and not without thorough debridement or scaling and root planing of the area in question. Because these chips are basically nonsurgical, patients become enthusiastically excited and relieved to learn they don't need surgery. But patients must be strongly advised that surgical intervention may be a next step in the correction of the periodontal pocket if significant change is not attained with local antimicrobials.

RESUMO

The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of a polylactic acid-citric acid softened membrane barrier during guided tissue regeneration (GTR) surgery on human intrabony defects. Eighteen patients were treated in the study and 16 patients completed the 1-year follow-up. In all, 27 intrabony defects were treated and clinical soft tissue measurements, including probing depth (PD), probing attachment level (PAL), and recession, were recorded. Results of the investigation demonstrated a significant reduction in PD (3.7 mm), a significant gain in PAL (4.2 mm), and a slight increase in recession (1.2 mm).

RESUMO

The plasma cell gingivitis condition, an uncommon, nonmalignant lesion, is characterized by an offending allergen which causes a massive plasma cell infiltration in gingival connective tissue. Occasionally, soft tissue biopsy of affected and normal tissues is necessary for proper diagnosis. Blood analysis may rule out other systematic disorders with oral manifestations. This case report describes the condition.

RESUMO

This case report documents the replacement of a mandibular partial denture with an implant bridge. With this alternative, the specialist and general dentist can combine their expertise in surgical, restorative and maintenance therapies to develop and maintain a high level of patient comfort and confidence.

RESUMO

A definitive diagnosis of Crohn's disease was made in a 31-year-old female patient who presented with a chief complaint of red, burning gingiva and an itchy palate. The microscopic identification of multinucleated giant cells in the gingival biopsy was suggestive of Crohn's disease. This led to a complete medical work-up including an upper and lower bowel series, which confirmed the diagnosis of Crohn's disease.

RESUMO

As the clinician is confronted with an endodontic and periodontic related lesion, he or she is able to classify the lesion according to diagnostic criteria and allow the development of a working diagnosis. Definitive therapy for the correctly identified lesion is now possible.
