RESUMO

The phenolic content of methanol and water extracts of ginger fermented by Trichoderma spp. using solid-state fermentation (SSF) was evaluated and was compared with unfermented ginger. The total phenolic content in fermented ginger increased several times. The highest phenolic content in ginger was detected after SSF by T. viride. The optimal physiological conditions for the maximum production of phenolic compounds and ß-glucosidase activity of fermented ginger by T. viride were detected at day 7 incubation, pH 6·0, 30°C and 30% moisture. The SSF of ginger by T. viride greatly enhanced the antioxidant potency of phenolic compounds and was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS assays. A potent antibacterial activity of the phenolic compounds of fermented ginger was observed against all the tested human-pathogenic bacteria. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the first report to investigate the optimal physiological conditions of solid-state fermentation (SSF) of ginger by Trichoderma viride for enhancing its phenolic content and antioxidant capacity. In addition, the phenolic compounds of fermented ginger could be potentially used as a dietary adjunct and an antibacterial agent.

RESUMO

The reactions γp→ηp and γp→η^{'}p are measured from their thresholds up to the center-of-mass energy W=1.96 GeV with the tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI. Differential cross sections are obtained with unprecedented statistical accuracy, providing fine energy binning and full production-angle coverage. A strong cusp is observed in the total cross section for η photoproduction at the energies in the vicinity of the η^{'} threshold, W=1896 MeV (E_{γ}=1447 MeV). Within the framework of a revised ηMAID isobar model, the cusp, in connection with a steep rise of the η^{'} total cross section from its threshold, can only be explained by a strong coupling of the poorly known N(1895)1/2^{-} state to both ηp and η^{'}p. Including the new high-accuracy results in the ηMAID fit to available η and η^{'} photoproduction data allows the determination of the N(1895)1/2^{-} properties.

RESUMO

The double polarization observable E and the helicity dependent cross sections σ_{1/2} and σ_{3/2} were measured for η photoproduction from quasifree protons and neutrons. The circularly polarized tagged photon beam of the A2 experiment at the Mainz MAMI accelerator was used in combination with a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The almost 4π detector setup of the Crystal Ball and TAPS is ideally suited to detect the recoil nucleons and the decay photons from η→2γ and η→3π^{0}. The results show that the narrow structure previously observed in η photoproduction from the neutron is only apparent in σ_{1/2} and hence, most likely related to a spin-1/2 amplitude. Nucleon resonances that contribute to this partial wave in η production are only N 1/2^{-} (S_{11}) and N 1/2^{+} (P_{11}). Furthermore, the extracted Legendre coefficients of the angular distributions for σ_{1/2} are in good agreement with recent reaction model predictions assuming a narrow resonance in the P_{11} wave as the origin of this structure.

RESUMO

The spin polarizabilities of the nucleon describe how the spin of the nucleon responds to an incident polarized photon. The most model-independent way to extract the nucleon spin polarizabilities is through polarized Compton scattering. Double-polarized Compton scattering asymmetries on the proton were measured in the Δ(1232) region using circularly polarized incident photons and a transversely polarized proton target at the Mainz Microtron. Fits to asymmetry data were performed using a dispersion model calculation and a baryon chiral perturbation theory calculation, and a separation of all four proton spin polarizabilities in the multipole basis was achieved. The analysis based on a dispersion model calculation yields γ(E1E1)=-3.5±1.2, γ(M1M1)=3.16±0.85, γ(E1M2)=-0.7±1.2, and γ(M1E2)=1.99±0.29, in units of 10(-4) fm(4).

RESUMO

We present new data for the transverse target asymmetry T and the very first data for the beam-target asymmetry F in the γ[over →]p[over →]→ηp reaction up to a center-of-mass energy of W=1.9 GeV. The data were obtained with the Crystal-Ball/TAPS detector setup at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. All existing model predictions fail to reproduce the new data indicating a significant impact on our understanding of the underlying dynamics of η meson photoproduction. The peculiar nodal structure observed in existing T data close to threshold is not confirmed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Molecular characterization of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is very essential for studying the epidemiology of MRSA. OBJECTIVES: This study reports two multiplex PCR for molecular typing of MRSA collected from Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 101 clinical isolates of strains were collected from major hospital laboratories and public health centres, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the period from August 2009 to May 2011. All the strains were tested phenotypically by conventional methods and genotypically by a novel multiplex PCR targeting at the same time S. aureus 16S rRNA, Panton - valentine leucocidin (PVL) and mecA resistance genes. All the strains were tested also by multiplex PCR for typing of SCC mec types. RESULTS: All the 101 strains previously identified phenotypically as S. aureus with bacteriological examination were positive for amplification of 756 base pair fragments specific for 16S rRNA of S. aureus. Moreover, all the strains were positive for amplification of 1339 base pair fragments specific for mecA gene, while only 38 strains (37.6%) showed positive amplification of 433 base pair fragments specific for PVL gene. The most predominant SCC mec type among the examined isolates is type V 43 (42.5) followed by SCCmec type III 39 (38.6%). CONCLUSION: The newly modified multiplex PCR is rapid and sensitive method for detection of MRSA. Moreover, the most predominant SCC mec type among the examined isolates from Jeddah, King Saudi Arabia is type V (42.5%), followed by Type III (38.6%).

RESUMO

This study documents the epidemiological aspects of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus and anal canal as it has presented to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC). Thirty-eight (33 Saudis) patients, 24 males and 14 females were studied. They ranged in age from 32 to 100 years. Twenty-four had anal canal tumors and 12 had anal margin cancers. Riyadh, the Eastern Province or Medina provided most patients and the majority presented with bleeding, a lump or pain. Symptom duration ranged from one month to more than two years. Fourteen had previous anal problems. There was an almost equal distribution of lesions between the anterior and posterior halves of the anus. Nineteen had clinically normal inguinal nodes. Thirty had squamous cell carcinoma (epidermoid) and eight had cloacogenic/basiloid tumors. Most tumors were either moderately or poorly differentiated. Twenty-eight presented with T3 or T4 tumors and only ten presented with T1 or T2 tumors. Five had evidence of metastases at initial presentation. Eight were treated by abdominoperinal resection of the rectum. A diversion colostomy was performed in six. Fifteen received radiotherapy alone but only three were treated by chemotherapy alone. Combination chemotherapy and radiotherapy was given to 14. More males than females had both anal canal and anal margin tumors. Patients with anal margin tumors were on average ten years older. There were twice as many with anal canal as anal margin tumors. There were more node-positive patients with anal margin tumors. Anal canal tumors were less well-differentiated. Follow-up was inadequate.
