BACKGROUND & AIMS: Sarcopenia, frailty, and COVID-19 appear to be intertwined. Preventive and intervention measures are required to break this link and mitigate the consequences of rising morbidity and mortality among older adults. This study aimed to identify and synthesize important factors related to the interaction of the devastating trio and their impact on the health and mortality of older adults. METHODS: Data were gathered via searches of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and Elsevier Mendeley Website. Study selection and data extraction were conducted by the two authors independently. The primary outcome was mortality, secondary outcomes included hospitalization and risk of development of severe disease among older Covid-19 patients. The study results are presented as adjusted odds and hazard ratios with 95% CI. RESULTS: A total of 1725 studies were identified through our electronic databases searches. After screening and assessing for eligibility, 39 studies were included in this review, a total of 51,796 patients were included in the systematic review. Our results indicated that frail patients recorded a higher mean age compared to non-frail patients (p < 0.00001), and COVID-19 frail patients had significantly increased mortality rate compared to non-frail patients, the log adjusted OR was 2.10 (1.63, 2.71); I2 = 78%; p < 0.00001. CONCLUSION: Age and frailty are important risk factors for mortality among older adults COVID-19 patients. COVID-19 patients with sarcopenia had a higher risk of developing severe conditions, including hospitalization and ICU admission. Findings that support the use of frailty and sarcopenia indicators to help in the decision-making process for medical care in older adults COVID-19 patients.

We present the design and experimental characterization of a silicon nitride pulse interleaver based on coupled resonator optical waveguide filters. In order to achieve a targeted free spectral range of 1.44 THz, which is large given the reduced optical confinement of the silicon nitride platform, individual ring resonators are designed with tapered waveguides. Its application to time-interleaved photonically-assisted ADCs is analyzed by combining experimental characterization of the photonic integrated circuit with a comprehensive model of the entire ADC. The impact of fundamental signal distortion and noise sources affecting the converter is investigated and suitable equalization techniques at the digital signal processing level are evaluated. The novel application of a simple but powerful equalization filter in the DSP domain allows for a significant improvement of the digitized signal SNR. An ENOB of 5 over a 75 GHz bandwidth (150 GS/s) and an ENOB of 4.3 over a 100 GHz bandwidth (200 GS/s) are expected to be achievable with compact and off-the-shelf single-section semiconductor mode locked lasers, that can be further improved with lower noise light sources.

BACKGROUND: Smoking tobacco is a worldwide public health issue. Over the last few decades, smoking patterns have been changing, reflected by increasing rates among young people and females in particular. AIMS: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and modalities of smoking and to assess the factors, habits and beliefs that might encourage or discourage smoking among young adults in Palestine. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the West Bank in 2014 among Palestinians aged 18-25 years old. Subjects were recruited from six Palestinian universities (n=1997). Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire focusing on sociodemographics, knowledge and beliefs towards tobacco smoking, and the reasons that motivate or hinder smokers to quit. RESULTS: The prevalence of tobacco smoking was found to be 47.7%. Males had higher smoking rates, consumption levels, and initiated smoking at younger ages (74.4% started at ≤18 years old). Smoking cigarettes and waterpipe were the most common forms among both sexes. Smokers were also found to consume higher amounts of caffeinated drinks and fast food, showed lower scores towards anti-smoking beliefs, and reported significantly higher prevalence of smoking-related symptoms and diseases, primarily shortness of breath (20.5%) and cough (16.6%). The majority of smokers reported attempting and willingness to quit smoking. Health and financial costs were the strongest factors encouraging quitting while mood changes and lack of self-control were the most reported discouraging factors. Moreover, smoking among family members and peers increased the odds of smoking. CONCLUSIONS: Increasing rates of smoking among young Palestinians and a growing popularity of waterpipe use should alert stakeholders to the necessity for the implementation of smoking prevention and awareness policies and programmes.

The need for simple self-assessment tools is necessary to predict women at high risk for developing osteoporosis. In this study, tools like the IOF One Minute Test, Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX), and Simple Calculated Osteoporosis Risk Estimation (SCORE) were found to be valid for Palestinian women. The threshold for predicting women at risk for each tool was estimated. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the validity of the updated IOF (International Osteoporosis Foundation) One Minute Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Test, FRAX, SCORE as well as age alone to detect the risk of developing osteoporosis in postmenopausal Palestinian women. METHODS: Three hundred eighty-two women 45 years and older were recruited including 131 women with osteoporosis and 251 controls following bone mineral density (BMD) measurement, 287 completed questionnaires of the different risk assessment tools. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were evaluated for each tool using bone BMD as the gold standard for osteoporosis. RESULTS: The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was the highest for FRAX calculated with BMD for predicting hip fractures (0.897) followed by FRAX for major fractures (0.826) with cut-off values ˃1.5 and ˃7.8%, respectively. The IOF One Minute Test AUC (0.629) was the lowest compared to other tested tools but with sufficient accuracy for predicting the risk of developing osteoporosis with a cut-off value ˃4 total yes questions out of 18. SCORE test and age alone were also as good predictors of risk for developing osteoporosis. According to the ROC curve for age, women ≥64 years had a higher risk of developing osteoporosis. Higher percentage of women with low BMD (T-score ≤-1.5) or osteoporosis (T-score ≤-2.5) was found among women who were not exposed to the sun, who had menopause before the age of 45 years, or had lower body mass index (BMI) compared to controls. Women who often fall had lower BMI and approximately 27% of the recruited postmenopausal Palestinian women had accidents that caused fractures. CONCLUSIONS: Simple self-assessment tools like FRAX without BMD, SCORE, and the IOF One Minute Tests were valid for predicting Palestinian postmenopausal women at high risk of developing osteoporosis.

Background. Labor related injuries among Palestinian schoolchildren are a significant undocumented public health concern. This study aimed at documenting the prevalence and nature of work related injuries among schoolchildren as well as identifying sociodemographic factors that predict these injuries. Methods. A cross-sectional survey included 15,963 children of whom 6458 (40.8%) completed an optional package related to labor. Students aged 12-18 years self-completed the international WHO collaborative HBSC valid questionnaires between April and May of 2006. Results. Approximately 73.8% of the students who filled the optional package reported working during the last 12 months, of whom 79.1% sustained a work related injury. Work injuries were significantly higher among boys, younger children, and children enrolled in UNRWA schools and living in Gaza Strip (P < 0.05). Children working ≥3 hours/day were more likely to experience injuries, 1.73 (95% CI, 1.53-1.95), than those working ≤3/day. About half of the children worked in retail trade (51.5%), agriculture (20.0%), and cleaning (11.4%). Injury type was related to the type of work performed. Conclusions. The high prevalence of injuries among working Palestinian schoolchildren confirms its severity as a public health problem. To reduce occupational injuries, policymakers and professionals should develop intervention programs that target the public and health providers.

Background. A cross-sectional survey was designed to provide a baseline data on the prevalence and distribution of overweight and obesity and their associations among adults in Palestine. Methods. A random representative sample of 3617 adults aged 18-64 years was collected between October 1999 and October 2000. Results. The prevalence of overweight was 35.5% in women and 40.3% in men, obesity was 31.5% in women and 17.5% in men. Adults aged 45-54 years old were significantly more likely to be obese (29.2% in men and 50.2% in women) or overweight (48.1% in men and 37.2% in women). When compared with women, men showed significantly more normal BMI level (40.5% versus 31.6%; P < 0.05). Cut-off points for a high waist circumference and high waist-to-hip ratio identified 57.8% and 47.2% of the population, respectively, to be at an increased and high risk for cardiovascular disease. Sociodemographic factors (age, sex, educational level, and marital status) were also found to be significantly related to BMI. Conclusion. Obesity and overweight are enormous public health problems in Palestine. Population-based research at the national level to investigate the social and cultural factors associated with high prevalence of overweight and obesity among Palestinian adults should be implemented.

In low and middle income countries (LMIC), high-quality disease registration is difficult to achieve in the setting of inadequate healthcare infrastructure and political or economical instability. In this article, we explore the potential of geographic information systems (GIS) to add value to the understanding of childhood cancer patterns in the West Bank, despite a variety of obstacles to disease registration. All incidence cases of childhood cancers (under the age 15) from 1998 to 2007 were collected from the West Bank Cancer Registry. Temporal, spatial and space-time analyses were performed using the SatScan software developed by Martin Kulldorff and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The analyses were categorized into the following groups: all childhood cancer, leukemias, acute lymphocytic leukemia, lymphomas, brain and central nervous system (CNS) cancers and remaining cancers (excluding leukemia, lymphoma and CNS tumors). The temporal analysis revealed that cancer registration was more complete from 1998 to 2000 (p=0.0162), and that leukemia registration was severely deficient from 2003 to 2005 (p=0.0012). The spatial analysis showed a concentration of cancer in metropolitan districts where referral hospitals are based. Under registration was detected in the northern districts of Jenin and Tulkarm (RR=0.59, p=0.0059), more prominent from 2002 to 2005 (RR=0.33, p=0.0006). The analysis for high rates found a cluster of lymphoma in town of Dura and its surrounding agricultural villages (RR=4.10, p=0.0023). Our study reveals that the application of GIS tools to registry data in LMIC can help to identify geographical patterns in cancer registration and healthcare accessibility, generating priorities for future health research and policy in resource-limited areas.
