RESUMO

PURPOSE: The Contraceptive Health Research of Informed Choice Experience study involved 11 European countries with the goal of evaluating the influence of counseling on the user's choice among three different types of combined hormonal contraceptive (CHC) administration: pill, transdermal patch, and vaginal ring. Here, we report the results of the youngest age group (age 15-20 years) for Switzerland. METHODS: A total of 1,032 adolescent women who contemplated a CHC form of contraception were counseled about the three CHCs. Questionnaires were filled out to determine the women's preferred choice before and after counseling, and the reason for their final decision. RESULTS: After counseling, more than one third of the women decided to use a different contraceptive method than initially intended. The fraction of vaginal ring users increased from 7.5% to 21.8%, and that of patch users from 3.3% to 5.8%. At pre-counseling, 225 women had no preconceived idea about which method to choose. Only 29 women were still undecided post-counseling. The main reasons adolescent women chose the vaginal ring or the patch were the monthly or weekly use and the ease of use. CONCLUSIONS: Adolescent women's decision about which CHC to use is greatly influenced by counseling that provides balanced information on all CHCs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Considering the advantages of parenteral routes of administration of combined hormonal contraceptives (CHCs), their low prevalence of use in Europe is surprising. The Contraceptive health research of informed choice experience (CHOICE) study involved 11 European countries. It aimed at evaluating the influence of counselling on users' choice between three modalities of CHC administration (the pill, the transdermal patch, and the vaginal ring). We report here the results for Switzerland. STUDY DESIGN: Women (N = 2629) with a need for contraception received extended counselling. Questionnaires were used to collect data about the women's preferred method before and after counselling, and the reasons for their ultimate decision. RESULTS: After counselling, 40% of the women chose a contraceptive method that was different from the one initially intended. The number of vaginal ring users (28% vs. 11% intended) and patch users (7% vs. 4% intended) increased (p < 0.0001). Of the initially undecided women, 93% chose a contraceptive method after counselling. However, although information was provided on the risks, side effects and benefits associated with the different contraceptive methods, surprisingly few women retained this knowledge. CONCLUSION: The provision of balanced information on all CHCs influenced women's decisions to a great extent. Unlike the pill, non-oral methods were significantly more often chosen.

RESUMO

While probing the role of RNA for the function of SET1C/COMPASS histone methyltransferase, we identified SET1RC (SET1 mRNA-associated complex), a complex that contains SET1 mRNA and Set1, Swd1, Spp1 and Shg1, four of the eight polypeptides that constitute SET1C. Characterization of SET1RC showed that SET1 mRNA binding did not require associated Swd1, Spp1 and Shg1 proteins or RNA recognition motifs present in Set1. RNA binding was not observed when Set1 protein and SET1 mRNA were derived from independent genes or when SET1 transcripts were restricted to the nucleus. Importantly, the protein-RNA interaction was sensitive to EDTA, to the translation elongation inhibitor puromycin and to the inhibition of translation initiation in prt1-1 mutants. Taken together, our results support the idea that SET1 mRNA binding was dependent on translation and that SET1RC assembled on nascent Set1 in a cotranslational manner. Moreover, we show that cellular accumulation of Set1 is limited by the availability of certain SET1C components, such as Swd1 and Swd3, and suggest that cotranslational protein interactions may exert an effect in the protection of nascent Set1 from degradation.

RESUMO

Estrogens exert their regulatory potential on gene expression through different nuclear and non-nuclear mechanisms. A direct nuclear approach is the interaction of estrogen with specific target sequences of DNA, estrogen response elements (ERE) or units. EREs can be grouped into perfect and imperfect palindromic sequences with the imperfect sequences differing from the consensus sequence in one or more nucleotides and being less responsive to the activated estrogen-estrogen receptor (ER) complex. Differences in the ERE sequence and the ER subtype involved can substantially alter ER-ERE interaction. In addition, cross-talk between ERs and other nuclear transcription factors profoundly influences gene expression. Here, we focus on the recent advances in the understanding of the structure of EREs and how ERs are recruited to these. Identifying known target genes for estrogen action could help us to understand the potential risks and benefits of the administration of this steroid to humans.

RESUMO

This retrospective analysis evaluated whether the gestational age, mean birth weight, length and shoulder width of vaginally delivered newborns have increased during the last 25 years in Vienna, Austria. Women who have given birth at the University of Vienna Medical School Hospital were divided into four age groups: under 20 years, 20-24 years, 25-29 years, and 30 years of age or over. Patient data collected between 1976 to 2000 were grouped into five periods: 1976-1979, 1980-1984, 1985-1989, 1990-1994, and 1995-2000. A highly significant increase of all four parameters was observed for all age groups between 1976 and 2000. The changes were most marked in the 25-29 year age group.
