RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine whether the degree of purity achieved in conventional vaccines against the foot and mouth disease virus in Argentina interferes with the interpretation of seroepidemiological surveys for confirming the absence of viral activity, which are performed to support the recognition of free zones practising vaccination. The evaluation of 168 vaccine series due to be marketed in Argentina (2006-2012) and subjected to official control testing in cattle, as well as repeated vaccination of cattle and other species using vaccines with high antigen concentrations, demonstrated that they did not induce antibodies to non-structural proteins (NSPs). The results show clearly that vaccines with satisfactory potency do not induce a response to NSPs, even by forcing the immune response through more concentrated doses with multiple valences and revaccination protocols at shorter irtervals than in vaccination campaigns. These results confirm that the vaccines used in routine vaccination programmes have a degree of antigen purification consistent with the needs observed on the basis of sampling for serological surveillance. Moreover, serological surveys conducted in 2006-2011 by Argentina's official Veterinary Services--the National Health and Agrifood Quality Service (SENASA)--on more than 23,000 sera per year from cattle included in the vaccination programme, in order to confirm the absence of virus circulation, revealed an average 0.05% of reactive results, consistent with the specificity of the tests. In conclusion, the vaccines produced by conventional methods and with proven potencythat are available in Argentina are sufficiently purified to ensure thatthey do not interfere with the interpretation of sampling for serological surveillance performed to support the recognition of FMD-free zones practising vaccination.

Introducción: BIOBADASAR (Registro Argentino de Eventos Adversos con Tratamientos Biológicos en Reumatología) comenzó en agosto de 2010. La importancia de este registro es mostrar datos locales que, probablemente, puedan diferir de otros registros. El objetivo es comunicar los resultados del tercer reporte de BIOBADASAR. Métodos: Todos los pacientes con enfermedades reumáticas que requirieron tratamiento con agentes biológicos y pacientes controles sin estos tratamientos fueron incluidos en la base de datos provenientes de 32 centros participando a lo largo de la Argentina. Introduction: BIOBADASAR (Argentine Registry of Adverse Events with Biological Treatments in Rheumatology) began in August 2010. The importance of this registry is to show local data that may probably differ from other registries. The objective is to communicate the results of the third BIOBADASAR report. We evaluated, in immature female rats, the effect of the GABAergic system on the reproductive axis and on pubertal development. Initially, using a prolonged treatment with aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA), increasing hypothalamic GABA (p < 0.002), and decreasing GnRH and glutamate content (p < 0.05 and < 0.02). Treated rats showed diminished serum LH (p < 0.05) and estradiol (p < 0.005) levels. Vaginal opening occurred at 30.8 +/- 0.6 days in controls, and at 36.7 +/- 0.98 days in AOAA-treated rats. Acute treatment with AOAA resulted in a decreased GnRH and glutamate output, and in an increased taurine release from superfused hypothalamic fragments. This effect was mimicked by the GABA-A and GABA-B agonists. The activation of the GABAergic system during postnatal days 23-29 significantly restrains the hypothalamo-pituitary-ovaric axis and delays the onset of puberty. The existence of a physiological cross-talk between excitatory and inhibitory amino acid neurotransmitters regulating GnRH release during the onset of puberty is postulated.
