RESUMO

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a unique tumor that has a distinct clinical behavior and dismal prognosis. If untreated, it can become aggressively malignant, and life expectancy could be limited to weeks. Spontaneous regression of lung cancer has rarely been reported, and among them SCLC is even rarer. The underlying mechanisms of spontaneous regression are poorly understood. Here, we report a case of complete spontaneous SCLC remission in an elderly patient.

RESUMO

Anaphylactic reaction to lidocaine has been reported during a dental procedure. In this trial, a patient who required local anesthesia for dental treatment was desensitized successfully to intravenous lidocaine using IFN-gamma. Practical general protocols and principles are suggested for the general application of this method for other intravenous drugs.

RESUMO

Skeletal muscle and peritoneum are rare sites of metastases from lung cancer. We report a case of squamous cell lung cancer with concurrent metastases to skeletal muscle and peritoneum. A 71-year-old man was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the right lower lobe with metastasis to the right hilar lymph node at clinical stage T3N1M0. Because of poor performance status and comorbidity, he only received radiation therapy. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography for mid-assessment of response showed two abnormal hypermetabolic lesions in the peritoneum of the left upper quadrant area and the left thigh muscle. We performed a needle-approach biopsy in each lesion and found both of the lesions were metastases from lung cancer. The patient died after two months.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Few studies on how to diagnose pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors through morphometric analysis have been reported. In this study, we measured and analyzed the characteristic parameters of pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors using an image analyzer to aid in diagnosis. METHODS: Sixteen cases of typical carcinoid tumor, 5 cases of atypical carcinoid tumor, 15 cases of small cell carcinoma, and 51 cases of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma were analyzed. Using an image analyzer, we measured the nuclear area, perimeter, and the major and minor axes. RESULTS: The mean nuclear area was 0.318±0.101 µm(2) in typical carcinoid tumors, 0.326±0.119 µm(2) in atypical carcinoid tumors, 0.314±0.107 µm(2) in small cell carcinomas, and 0.446±0.145 µm(2) in large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas. The mean nuclear circumference was 2.268±0.600 µm in typical carcinoid tumors, 2.408±0.680 µm in atypical carcinoid tumors, 2.158±0.438 µm in small cell carcinomas, and 3.247±1.276 µm in large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas. All parameters were useful in distinguishing large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma from other tumors (p=0.001) and in particular, nuclear circumference was the most effective (p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors showed nuclear morphology differences by subtype. Therefore, evaluation of quantitative nuclear parameters improves the accuracy and reliability of diagnosis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Intraocular metastasis from gastric cancer is not common and metastatic carcinoma to the vitreous or retina is exceedingly rare. We describe a case of gastric cancer metastatic to the vitreous and retina. METHODS: Retrospective, single-center case report. RESULTS: A 64-year-old woman with advanced gastric cancer with multiorgan metastatic disease presented with decreased visual acuity. Ophthalmoscopy revealed extensive overlying vitreous seeds and macular infiltrations in both eyes. Fine-needle aspiration cytology from the vitreous confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: We report an extremely rare case of vitreous and retinal metastasis from gastric cancer. Ophthalmologists and oncologists should be aware that gastrointestinal cancer can cause intraocular metastasis in the form of vitreous seeds and retinal infiltration.

RESUMO

A low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumor that has a tendency to develop in the deep soft tissue of young adults and the potential for local recurrence or distant metastasis. There have been several case reports and sporadic reports in the literature. However, only 1 case has been reported in Korea but without a follow-up result. We describe a 54-year-old female patient with a low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma of the thigh that had been growing slowly for 34 years. A marginal resection of this tumor was performed. Currently, the patient is doing well without evidence of local recurrence or distant metastasis at 5 years after surgery.

RESUMO

A 29-year-old woman presented with secondary amenorrhea, primary infertility, and virilization, which had developed over the past 2 years was suspected to have a virilizing tumor at her left ovary. Her serum testosterone level was markedly elevated (380 ng/dL). Left salpingoophorectomy was performed, and histopathological examination revealed a thecoma of the left ovary. The postoperative serum testosterone level returned to 65 ng/dL. The patient did not have regression of virilism soon. However, the patient had a normal menstruation 29 days after surgery and gave birth to a baby 13 months after surgery.
