RESUMO

In-plane InGaAs/Ga(As)Sb heterojunction tunnel diodes are fabricated by selective area molecular beam epitaxy with two different architectures: either radial InGaAs core/Ga(As)Sb shell nanowires or axial InGaAs/GaSb heterojunctions. In the former case, we unveil the impact of strain relaxation and alloy composition fluctuations at the nanoscale on the tunneling properties of the diodes, whereas in the latter case we demonstrate that template assisted molecular beam epitaxy can be used to achieve a very precise control of tunnel diodes dimensions at the nanoscale with a scalable process. In both cases, negative differential resistances with large peak current densities are achieved.

RESUMO

In order to shed light on the unexplored properties of the ternary nitride Ca4TiN4, we report for the first time the results of an ab initio study of its structural, electronic, elastic, chemical bonding and thermodynamic properties. Calculated equilibrium structural parameters are in excellent concordance with available experimental data. Electronic properties were explored through the calculation of the energy band dispersions and density of states. It is found that Ca4TiN4 has an indirect band gap (Z-Γ) of 1.625 (1.701) eV using LDA (GGA). Nature of the chemical bonding was studied via Mulliken population analysis and charge density distribution map. It is found that the Ca-N bond is dominantly ionic, whereas the Ti-N one is dominantly covalent. Elastic properties of both single-crystal and polycrystalline phases of the title compound were explored in details using the stain-stress approach. Analysis of the calculated elastic moduli reveals that the title compound is mechanically stable, ductile and elastically anisotropic. Temperature and pressure dependencies of the unit-cell volume, bulk modulus, heat capacities, volume thermal expansion coefficient, Grüneisen parameter and Debye temperature were investigated based on the quasiharmonic Debye model.

RESUMO

We give an analytical and experimental demonstration of a classical analogue of the electromagnetic induced absorption (EIA) in a simple photonic device consisting of two stubs of lengths d1 and d2 grafted at the same site along a waveguide. By detuning the lengths of the two stubs (i.e. δ = d(2) - d(1)) we show that: (i) the amplitudes of the electromagnetic waves in the two stubs can be written following the two resonators model where each stub plays the role of a radiative resonator with low Q factor. The destructive interference between the waves in the two stubs may give rise to a sharp resonance peak with high Q factor in the transmission as well as in the absorption. (ii) The transmission coefficient around the resonance induced by the stubs can be written following a Fano-like form. In particular, we give an explicit expression of the position, width and Fano parameter of the resonances as a function of δ. (iii) By taking into account the loss in the waveguides, we show that at the transmission resonance, the transmission (reflection) increases (decreases) as a function of δ. Whereas the absorption goes through a maximum around 0.5 for a threshold value δth which depends on the attenuation in the system and then falls to zero. (iv) We give a comparison between the phase of the determinant of the scattering matrix, the so-called Friedel phase and the phase of the transmission amplitude. (v) The effect of the boundary conditions at the end of the resonators on the EIA resonance is also discussed. The analytical results are obtained by means of the Green's function method, whereas the experiments are carried out using coaxial cables in the radio-frequency regime. These results should have important consequences for designing integrated devices such as narrow-frequency optical or microwave filters and high-speed switches.

RESUMO

We report on an adjustable interferometric set-up for Scanning Microwave Microscopy. This interferometer is designed in order to combine simplicity, a relatively flexible choice of the frequency of interference used for measurements as well as the choice of impedances range where the interference occurs. A vectorial calibration method based on a modified 1-port error model is also proposed. Calibrated measurements of capacitors have been obtained around the test frequency of 3.5 GHz down to about 0.1 fF. Comparison with standard vector network analyzer measurements is shown to assess the performance of the proposed system.

RESUMO

This work consisted of the intramammary infections (IMI) of 8 heifers by high doses of Escherichia coli to study both the proteolytic activity in milk and the resulting peptides. Therefore, a milking kinetic has been followed, and several parameters have been studied, such as proteose peptones (PP) fraction (quantitative and qualitative changes), plasmin activity (PA), milk somatic cell count (SCC), and bacterial count. A qualitative study of milk proteins and PP was performed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-PAGE, and the peptides recovered in PP during the acute phase of inflammation were amino-terminal micro-sequenced. A BSA increase in milk over time supported the hypothesis of an increase in the permeability of the epithelial barrier. A significant increase in PP content, considered to be an indicator of proteolysis, was observed from postinfusion hours (PIH) 12 to 48. Both the E. coli bacterial count and the SCC increased from PIH 3 to 216. Plasmin activity was increased noticeably from PIH 15 to 24. The respective increases in SCC, bacterial count, and PA suggest their involvement in a global mechanism responsible for the increase in proteolysis in milk after E. coli challenge. Somatic cell count and E. coli may be involved from PIH 3 to 216, and PA involvement might be highlighted during the maximum proteolysis, from PIH 15 to 24. A qualitative study of PP fraction by electrophoresis revealed the apparition of 5 peptide bands: P1 and P2 previously recovered during the lipopolysaccharide challenge, and E1 (27.0 kDa), E2 (15.5 kDa), and E3 (9.0 kDa) were specific to E. coli challenge; E1, E2, and E3 contained casein fragments. The roles played by leukocytes and E. coli are discussed.

RESUMO

Botryoïde sarcoma of the uterine cervix is a very rare tumor of the young woman or during genial activity. Less than 100 cases have been reported in the literature. The treatment ranged from radical surgery to conservative surgery followed by chemotherapy. We report a case of cervical botryoide rhabdomyosarcoma occurred in a 33 year-old woman treated primary by chemotherapy followed by surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. The patient died by extensive metastatic retroperitoneal nodes and lung.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Retrospective analysis of six patients with intracranial germinoma treated in INO and a literature review. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients were treated from 1993 to 1998, for histologically verified primary intracranial germinoma. Median age was 18 years (range: 14-26 years). All patients received chemo-radiotherapy (4FP + radiotherapy from 30 to 50 Gy). RESULTS: 4 tumours were in complete remission. Two patients have kept non-evolutive residual cyst. Five patients are alive with non-evolutive disease after 15-40 months of follow-up (average: 27 months). One patient was lost to follow-up, 14 months after treatment, without disease. CONCLUSION: The treatment of intracranial germinoma is currently first line chemotherapy followed by low-dose and limited irradiation.
