RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the insecticidal properties of essential oil derived from Eucalyptus cinerea leaves and its main component, 1,8-cineole, against two significant pests of stored dates, Ectomyelois ceratoniae and Ephestia kuehniella (Pyralidae). The impact of the treatment on the sensory characteristics of date fruits was assessed to verify the complete absence of off-odours and off-flavours. Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry analysis of E. cinerea essential oil revealed that the primary compound was 1,8-cineole (74.5%). Fumigant toxicity of the two pests, indicated that first instar larvae (L1) exhibited greater tolerance to E. cinerea EO and 1,8-cineole than L5, while adult forms were more susceptible than larvae. The E. cinerea EO had a noticeable pest contact activity when used at a concentration of 0.35 µL/cm2 caused 100 and 88.3% mortality to E. ceratoniae and E. kueheniella, respectively, after 1 hour of exposure. Hedonic evaluation showed that consumers' appreciation of fumigated dates was not significantly different to the no treated dates.

RESUMO

The aerial parts of cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.) of three collect regions (Bizerte, Ben-Arous and Nabeul) were reported for their essential oil (EO) compositions, antioxidant, antimicrobial and insecticidal activities. Results showed that the higher EO yields were observed in Bizerte and Ben Arous (0.56%), followed by Nabeul (0.49%). The EO composition showed the predominance of α-pinene with 36.72% in Bizerte, 30.22% in Nabeul and 30% in Ben-Arous. Cypress EO of Bizerte showed higher antiradical capacity (IC50 = 55 µg/mL) than Ben-Arous (IC50 = 97.50 µg/mL) and Nabeul (IC50 = 155 µg/mL). E. faecalis was the most sensitive strain to cypress EO of Bizerte with the largest inhibition zone (IZ = 65 mm). Regarding the insecticidal activity, cypress EO of Bizerte had the highest mortality of Tribolium castaneum with a lethal concentration of LC50 = 164.3 µL/L air after 24 h exposure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Synthetic insecticides are the most useful tools for preventing losses caused by insect pest's infestation during storage. However, the use of pesticides should be limited because of the development of insect resistance and their adverse effects on human health and environment. In the last decades, natural insecticidal products, principally essential oils (EOs) and their active components, exhibited potential alternatives for pest control. Nevertheless, due to their volatile nature, encapsulation could be considered as the most appropriate solution. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the fumigant ability of inclusion complexes of Rosmarinus officinalis EO and its major constituents (1,8-cineole, α-pinene and camphor) with 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-ß-CD) against Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Pyralidae) larvae. RESULTS: The encapsulation within HP-ß-CD reduced greatly the release rate of the encapsulated molecules. Therefore, free compounds were more toxic than those encapsulated. Moreover, results revealed that encapsulated volatiles exhibited interesting insecticidal toxicity towards E. ceratoniae larvae. In fact, after 30 days mortality rates were 53.85, 94.23, 3.85 and 42.31% for α-pinene, 1,8-cineole, camphor and EO, respectively, encapsulated within HP-ß-CD. In addition, results showed also that 1,8-cineole free and encapsulated was more effective toward E. ceratoniae larvae than the other tested volatiles. Additionally, the HP-ß-CD/volatiles complexes exhibited best persistence compared to the volatiles components. The half-life of the encapsulated α-pinene, 1,8-cineole, camphor and EO (7.83, 8.75, 6.87 and 11.20 days) was significantly longer than that of the free ones (3.46, 5.02, 3.38 and 5.58 days). CONCLUSION: These results sustain the utility of R. officinalis EO and its main components encapsulated in CDs as treatment to stored-date commodities. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

The phytochemical composition of Laurus nobilis essential oil and their anticholinesterase, antioxidant, and insecticidal potential were studied. Also, the oil volatile fraction was compared in semolina at the beginning and after storage periods. For that, a headspace solid-phase-microextraction analysis (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry was undertaken. Significant quantitative and qualitative differences of the oil volatile fraction were detected according to storage periods and occupation space ratios. Additionally, anti-acetylcholinesterase activity of L. nobilis oil against T. castaneum adults was evaluated. Results revealed that insecticide activity varied according to storage duration and occupation space. Besides, the oil acts on acetylcholine hydrolysis by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase. These results highlighted that L. nobilis essential oil may be recommended as an eco-friendly alternative for preserving semolina during storage.

RESUMO

Natural insecticidal products, essentially essential oils and their bioactive compounds are available as an excellent alternative method to control insect pests as well as they are less toxic to human health. However, due to their volatile constituents, encapsulation could be considered as the most suitable solution for their practical application. Therefore, this study aims to explore the insecticidal toxicity of chitosan nanoparticles loaded with Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil against adults of Carpophilus hemipterus. Chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by ionic gelation method with an encapsulation efficiency 41.543.1% and loading capacity 5.24G0.28%. Results revealed that chitosan nanoparticles loaded rosemary oil exhibited interesting insecticidal toxicity towards C. hemipterus adults in stored dates with 50.73% mortality. Overall, this work pointed out that the innovative design method based on chitosan-nanoparticles loaded rosemary oil can be promoted in integrated pest management program for stored date pests.

RESUMO

This study investigated composition and toxicity of Thyme EOs against two main stored grain insect pests. Carvacrol was distinguished as a major compound (78.34%). In laboratory tests, EOs applied by both direct contact and fumigant tests was more toxic to L. serricorne than T. castaneum. The EOs were also tested combined with two Tunisian Diatomaceous earths (DEs) against T. castaneum. The LC50 was 6.28 µL/L air for natural preparation EO/R1, 5.90 µL/L air for EO/R2 and 121.17 for crude EOs by fumigant test, respectively. While, contact test revealed that natural DEs; dust act as an insecticide with 'LC50' values of 3.22 and 0.29 µL/cm2f or R1 and R2, respectively. Moreover, a significant difference was noted between crude EO, EO/R1 and EO/R2. Overall, the enhancement of the Tunisian DEs' insecticidal activity by its mix with EOs may be a promising active substance as a stored grain protectant.

RESUMO

This research was conducted to determine the effect of geographical distribution on morphological characteristics of plants and some chemical compounds such as polyphenols. Moreover, we explore the contact toxicity of ethanolic and methanolic extracts from Urginea maritima bulbs and Asphodelus microcarpus tubers collected from three localities in the North West of Tunisia against Tribolium castaneum adults. The toxicity results demonstrated that both of the studied plant extracts had an effective control against T. castaneum at concentration 7.5 µL/L air, thus total mortality reached. In addition, results showed plant extracts with methanol exhibited high mortality percentage of T. castaneum. On the other hand, results revealed that chemical composition of U. maritime bulbs and A. microcarpus tuber extract depends on the soil components and geographical distribution of plants. The present investigation confirmed that A. microcarpus and U. maritima may be recommended as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic insecticide against T. castaneum.

RESUMO

Eucalyptus leucoxylon, Rosmarinus officinalis, berries, and leaves of Schinus molle essential oils were analysed using GC-MS techniques and assessed for their fumigant toxicity against adults, larvae, and eggs of Ectomyelois ceratoniae and Ephestia kuehniella. Results showed that E. leucoxylon contained Spathulenol, p-Cymene, and Cryptone as major compounds. GC - MS analyses showed that the major compounds of R. officinalis essential oil were 1,8-Cineole, Camphor, and α-pinene. I-Phellandrene, t-Muurolol, and Phellandrene were the major components of the S. molle leaves; while I-Phellandrene, Limonen, and δ-Cadinene were the major components of the S. molle berries. S. molle berries were the most efficient followed by R. officinalis against E. ceratoniae and E. kuehniella. The most effective tested essential oil against E. ceratoniae larvae was S. molle berries. Results on the ovicidal and larvicidal effects of the tested oils demonstrated that R. officinalis was the most effective essential oil against E. kuehniella eggs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common human enzymopathy worldwide associated with hemolysis as well as neonatal jaundice, kernicterus, and even death. The goal of this study is to determinate the prevalence of G6PD deficiency in icteric neonates and to investigate its biochemical, hematological and molecular characteristics. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross sectional study was carried out on 154 icteric newborns admitted to the Bechir Hamza Children's Hospital in Tunisia. Laboratory evaluations included complete blood count, total serum bilirubin level (TSB), and erythrocyte G6PD activity. The G6PD activity was determined using a quantitative assay, which allowed us to divide the total population into two groups: normal and deficient population. The common G6PD Tunisian mutations (GdA - and GdMed) were determined using the amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS-PCR) method. RESULTS: The prevalence of G6PD deficiency among total population (154 icteric newborns) was 18.83%. Male neonates showed a higher incidence of G6PD deficiency of 11.03% compared to females (7.79%). There was no statistical difference between the two groups (normal and deficient), in relation to the sex, peak TSB level, age at peak TSB, hemoglobin level, and hematocrit. However, there was a significant difference in gestational age. In the deficient group, 48.28% neonates presented the peak TSB level between 3 to 7 days and 55% of the cases show a peak TSB level greater than 250 µmol/L. The G6PD G202A variant was found in 41.37% of cases. CONCLUSION: This study shows a higher prevalence of G6PD deficiency in icteric newborns of Tunisia (18.83%). This emphasizes the necessity of neonatal screening for G6PD deficiency to prevent the exposure of these newborns to known hemolytic agents and, subsequently, to prevent kernicterus or other serious complications.

RESUMO

The main objective of the present study is to introduce a new and ecologically safe method for managing the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae. Therefore, the Agave americana leaf extract's phytochemical profile, and its insecticidal activity against the adults of S. oryzae were evaluated. The A. americana leaf extract was screened for the following phytochemicals: total phenolics (14.70 ± 0.31 mg GAE/g FW), total flavonoids (5.15 ± 0.18 mg RE/g FW) and saponins (10.32 ± 0.20 mg OAE/g FW). The HPLC-ESI/TOF-MS analysis results revealed that flavonoid glycosides (kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin derivates) were the major phenolic compounds of the A. americana leaf extract. In addition, the GC-MS analysis identified n-alkanes (77.77%) as significant compounds of the lipophilic fraction from the leaf extract. Moreover, the insecticidal potential was assessed through contact and repellent bioassays towards the rice weevil adults. The LD50, LC50, and RC50 values were 10.55 µg/insect, 8.99 µg/cm2, and 0.055 µg/cm2 for topical application method, treated filter-paper method, and repellent bioassay, respectively. Furthermore, the A. americana leaf extract inhibited digestive enzyme activities, and median inhibition concentrations IC50 were evaluated to be 146.06 ± 1.74 and 86.18 ± 1.08 µg/mL for α-amylase and protease, respectively. Overall, our results highlighted the promising potential of the leaf extract against S. oryzae adults, allowing us to recommend the extract under investigation as an ecofriendly alternative to synthetic insecticides.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Essential oils are reported to be bio-insecticides. However, problems related to their volatility, oxidation and poor water solubility need to be solved before they can be considered as replacement pest control methods. Thus, an appropriate formulation is needed for commercial use. In this work, a new control method based on the use of a powdered cyclodextrin (CD)/1,8-cineole inclusion complex was assessed against larvae and adults of Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller) in comparison with two Rosmarinus officinalis (L.) essential oils, free 1,8-cineole (oils major compound) and a mixture of 50% CD/1,8-cineole inclusion complex and 50% free 1,8-cineole. RESULTS: Solid CD/1,8-cineole complex was more toxic against E. ceratoniae larvae than the two crude essential oils. At a concentration of 15 µL liter-1 air, the respective mortalities were 94.12%, 35.29% and 19.61% for solid CD/1,8-cineole complex, Thala and Cap Zbib oils after 37 days of exposure. Moreover, the solid CD/1,8-cineole complex achieved 5% adult emergence versus 68.33% for Cap Zbib and 55% for Thala oils. The half-life of solid CD/1,8-cineole inclusion complex (10.98 days) was considerably longer than that of the mixture (7.53 days) or free 1,8-cineole (3.43 days). CONCLUSION: This work highlights the utility of essential oil encapsulation in CD to overcome restrictions when used to control the date moth E. ceratoniae during storage. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.
