RESUMO

In this research, a sitagliptin-lignin biopolymer (SL) containing zinc selenide quantum dots (ZnSe QDs) and doxorubicin (doxo) was synthesized. The fabricated polymeric drug delivery system was characterized via FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, IR, and DSC. SLQD-Doxo exhibited an irregular surface with a 32 nm diameter and well-defined surface chemistry. Drug loading efficiency was assessed at different concentrations, pH levels, time intervals, and temperatures, and drug kinetics were calculated. Maximum drug release was observed at 6 µmol concentration after 24 h, pH of 6.5 and 45 °C. The maximum drug encapsulation efficiency was 81.75 %. SLQD-Doxo demonstrated 24.4 ± 1.04 % anti-inflammatory activity, and the maximum lipoxygenase inhibition in a concentration-dependent manner was 71.45 ± 2.02 %, compared to indomethacin, a standard anticancer drug. The designed system was applied to breast cancer MCF-7 cells to evaluate anticancer activity. Cytotoxicity of SLQD-Doxo resulted in 24.48 ± 1.64 dead cells and 74.39 ± 4.12 viable cells. Lignin's polyphenolic nature resulted in good antioxidant activity of LLQD-Doxo. The combination of SLQD-Doxo was appropriate for drug delivery at high temperatures and acidic pH of tumor cells compared to healthy cells.

BACKGROUND: Nanomedicine, as the combination of radiopharmaceutical and nanocarrier (QDs), is developed for treating cancer. Gallic acid is antimutagenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic. Typical retention time of gallic acid is approximately 4 to 8 h. To increase the retention time gallic acid is converted to prodrug by adding lipophilic moieties, encapsulating in lipophilic nanoparticles, or liposome formation. Similarly, thymoquinone is powerful antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effect, with reduced DNA damage. METHODS: In this study, a hydrophilic drug (gallic acid) is chemically linked to the hydrophobic drug (thymohydroquinone) to overcome the limitations of co-delivery of drugs. Thymohydroquinone (THQG) as the combination of gallic acid (GA) and thymoquinone (THQ) is loaded onto the PEI functionalized antimonene quantum dots (AM-QDs) and characterized by FTIR, UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Zeta sizer, SEM and AFM, in-vitro and in-vivo assay, and hemolysis. RESULTS: The calculated drug loading efficiency is 90 %. Drug release study suggests the drug combination is pH sensitive and it can encounters acidic pH, releasing the drug from the nanocarrier. The drug and drug-loaded nanocarrier possesses low cytotoxicity and cell viability on MCF-7 and Cal-27 cell lines. The proposed drug delivery system is radiolabeled with Iodine-131 (131I) and Technetium (99mTc) and its deposition in various organs of rats' bodies is examined by SPECT-CT and gamma camera. Hemolytic activity of 2, 4, 6, and 8 µg/ml is 1.78, 4.16, 9.77, and 15.79 %, respectively, reflecting low levels of hemolysis. The system also sustains oxidative stress in cells and environment, decreasing ROS production to shield cells and keep them healthy. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the proposed drug carrier system can be used as a multi-modal theragnostic agent in cancer.

Medicinal plants contain a wide variety of bioactive phytoconstituents which can serve as new therapeutic agents for several diseases. This study examines the antidiabetic potential of Aitchisonia rosea in alloxan-induced diabetic rats and identifies its bioactive phytoconstituents using GC-MS. In vitro, antidiabetic potential was established using the α-amylase inhibition assay. In vivo, antidiabetic potential was investigated by employing the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). GC-MS analysis was used to identify the bioactive phytoconstituents. The in vitro and in vivo tests showed that the aqueous extract of A. rosea possesses better antidiabetic potential. The α-amylase inhibition assay highlighted an IC50 value of 134.87µg/ml. In an oral glucose tolerance test, rats given an aqueous A. rosea extract significantly lowered their blood sugar levels significant reduction in the blood glucose concentration was observed in the oral glucose tolerance test in rats treated with the aqueous A. rosea extract. GC-MS investigation revealed many phytoconstituents, with serverogenin acetate and cycloheptasiloxane tetradecamethyl being important antidiabetic agents. This study found anti-diabetic properties in A. rosea extract. The phytochemical and GC-MS investigation also found serverogenin acetate and cycloheptasiloxane tetradecamethyl, which could be used to develop new antidiabetic drugs.

This dataset integrates and helps examine the impact of green intellectual capital (GIC) which comprises of green human capital (GHC), green structural capital (GSC), and green relational capital (GRC) on green organizational culture (GOC). Secondly, it enables the investigation of GOC as a mediation phenomenon between GIC and sustainable business model innovation (SBMI). Moreover, it highlights the moderation of frugal innovation (FGL) on GOC and SBMI relationship. An online survey was designed using Google forms to collect data from 345 middle/ senior management employees working in medium and large manufacturing firms in Pakistan. Unit of analysis is the organization; thus, each response represents one firm. SPSS and Smart PLS 4 were used for data analysis. Dataset demonstrates that GHC, GSC, and GRC positively impact GOC, which subsequently enhances SBMI. Moreover, effective implementation of FGL can bolster the effect of GOC on SBMI. The dataset is valuable as it can be reproduced and reanalyzed. It offers insights for professionals to revolutionize their innovation for environmental initiatives particularly in the manufacturing sector and train their staff to use modern eco-friendly ingenuities leading to enhanced business performance as well as sustainable development goals. Furthermore, the dataset holds significance for policymakers involved in implementing green economic revitalization programs, enabling them to offer incentives or penalties to encourage compliance.

Mungbean, Vigna radia (L.) R. Wilczek, is ranked 2nd next to chickpea (Cicer arietinum) in total cultivation and production in Pakistan. In August of 2022 and 2023, mungbean plants (cv. PRI Mung-2018) were found wilting in a field at the Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Wilted leaves turned yellow, died, but remained attached to the stem. Vascular tissue at the base of the stem showed light to dark brown discoloration. Roots were stunted with purplish brown to black discoloration. Symptomatic mungbean plants were collected from fields at five different locations (20 samples/location). Disease incidence was similar among the five fields, ranging from 5 to 10% at each location depending upon type of germplasm and date of sowing. For fungal isolation and morphological identification, symptomatic stem and root tissues were cut into ~5 mm2 pieces with a sterilized blade. Tissues were surface-sterilized for one min in a 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution, rinsed twice in sterilized water, air dried on sterilized filter paper, and aseptically placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) containing 0.5 g/L-1 streptomycin sulphate. Plates were incubated for 3-4 days at 25 ± 2°C with a 12-h photoperiod. Single-spore cultures were used for morphological and molecular analyses. Isolates on PDA grew rapidly and produced abundant white aerial mycelium that turned off-white to beige with age. Macroconidia were hyaline, falcate, typically 3-to-6 septate with a pointed apical cell and a foot-shaped basal cell, measuring 24.5-49.5 x 2.7-4.7 µm (n = 40). Globose to obovate chlamydospores measuring 5.8 ± 0.5 µm (n = 40) were produced singly or in chains and were intercalary or terminal and possessed roughened walls. The morphological data indicated the isolates were members of the genus Fusarium (Leslie and Summerell 2006). To obtain a species-level identification, a portion of translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1), the largest subunit of RNA polymerase (RPB1), and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase (RPB2) region were PCR amplified and sequenced using EF1/EF2 (O'Donnell et al. 1998), Fa/G2R (Hofstetter et al. 2007), and 5f2/7cr (Liu et al. 1999) primers, respectively. DNA sequences of these genes were deposited in GenBank under accession numbers MW059021, MW059017 and MW059019, respectively. The partial TEF1, RPB1 and RPB2 sequences were queried against the Fusarium MLST database (https://fusarium.mycobank.org/page/Fusarium_identification), using the polyphasic identification tool. The BLASTn search revealed 99.9% identity of the isolate to F. nanum (Xia et al. 2019), formerly FIESC 25 of the F. incarnatum-equiseti species complex (MRC 2610, NRRL 54143; O'Donnell et al. 2018). To confirm pathogenicity, roots of 3-5 leaf stage mungbean seedlings were soaked in a 106 spores ml-1 conidial suspension of the fungus for 15 min and then planted in 10 cm pots containing sterilized soil. Mock-inoculated plants with sterile water served as a negative control. Twenty pots that were used for each inoculated and control treatment were maintained at 25 ± 2°C, 14:8 h photoperiod, and 80% relative humidity in a growth chamber. After 15 days, leaf yellowing, internal browning from the base of stems and root discoloration was observed in all the inoculated plants. The uninoculated negative control plants remained asymptomatic. Fusarium nanum was re-isolated from artificially inoculated plants and identified by colony growth, conidial characteristics on PDA and molecular analyses (TEF1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of wilt caused by F.nanum on mungbean in Pakistan. In Pakistan, mungbean cultivation in irrigated areas has increased in recent years. It has been introduced frequently in citrus orchards, crop rotation of maize and sesame, intercropping with sugarcane and as green manure. However, citrus, maize, sesame and sugarcane are also hosts of Fusarium spp. Therefore, this information warrants sustainable crop protection and may have an impact on further interaction of F. nanum with other wilt pathogens.

The present review addresses the significance of lowering pesticide residue levels in food items because of their harmful impacts on human health, wildlife populations, and the environment. It draws attention to the possible health risks-acute and chronic poisoning, cancer, unfavorable effects on reproduction, and harm to the brain or immunological systems-that come with pesticide exposure. Numerous traditional and cutting-edge methods, such as washing, blanching, peeling, thermal treatments, alkaline electrolyzed water washing, cold plasma, ultrasonic cleaning, ozone treatment, and enzymatic treatment, have been proposed to reduce pesticide residues in food products. It highlights the necessity of a paradigm change in crop protection and agri-food production on a global scale. It offers opportunities to guarantee food safety through the mitigation of pesticide residues in food. The review concludes that the first step in reducing worries about the negative effects of pesticides is to implement regulatory measures to regulate their use. In order to lower the exposure to dietary pesticides, the present review also emphasizes the significance of precision agricultural practices and integrated pest management techniques. The advanced approaches covered in this review present viable options along with traditional methods and possess the potential to lower pesticide residues in food items without sacrificing quality. It can be concluded from the present review that a paradigm shift towards sustainable agriculture and food production is essential to minimize pesticide residues in food, safeguarding human health, wildlife populations, and the environment. Furthermore, there is a need to refine the conventional methods of pesticide removal from food items along with the development of modern techniques.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: This case report presents a rare occurrence of multiple bilateral breast fibroadenomas, one evolving into ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and invasive carcinoma, occurring simultaneously with a benign phyllodes tumor in the same breast. The importance of this case lies in emphasizing the crucial need for surveillance in patients with a long history of fibroadenomas and the necessity to investigate any rapid change in the size of fibroadenoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old multiparous female with a 17 year history of bilateral multiple breast lumps presented with recent onset of right breast pain and yellowish nipple discharge. Two lumps in her right breast had demonstrated an increase in size. Examination revealed a significant mass in the retroareolar region of the right breast and another at the 2 o'clock position. Histopathological examination of the biopsy specimens revealed fibroadenoma and benign phyllodes tumor. The patient underwent a bilateral breast lumpectomy. Further histopathological examination revealed ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive carcinoma within a complex fibroadenoma in the right breast and benign phyllodes tumor. Sentinel lymph node biopsy was negative. She had adjuvant radiations and trastuzumab. Regular follow-ups show no recurrence. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Fibroadenomas are usually benign but rarely undergo malignant change. Quick response to size changes and early detection greatly enhance patient results. CONCLUSION: Ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive breast cancer, a rare malignancy found within a fibroadenoma, necessitates histopathological specimens and immunohistochemical results for accurate diagnosis. Survival rates are significantly enhanced through a multidisciplinary approach.

In this study, a new four-parameter Lomax distribution is proposed using a new alpha power transformation technique. The new distribution is named "New Alpha Power Transformed Power Lomax Distribution." Mathematical properties, including moments, the moment-generating function, the mean residual life, order statistics, and the quantile function, are obtained. The maximum likelihood estimation approach is used to estimate the model parameters. A comprehensive simulation is used to evaluate the behavior of maximum likelihood estimators. Two real-world data sets were used to demonstrate the significance of the proposed model, and the results show that the new model performs better when interpreting lifetime data sets. In the end, for the data sets, Bayesian estimation and Metropolis-Hasting's approach were also utilized to construct the approximate Bayes estimates, and convergence diagnostic methods based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques were applied.

Additive manufacturing (AM) enables design freedom to fabricate functionally graded wave springs designed by varying design parameters, which are not possible in traditional manufacturing. AM also enables optimization of the wave spring design for specific load-bearing requirements. Existing wave springs are manufactured by metal with constant dimensions (width and thickness of the strip, diameter) using customized traditional machines in which design variations are almost impossible. This study aims to investigate the effect of wave height, the overlap between the two consecutive coils, and the number of waves per coil on the mechanical properties, for example, load-bearing capacity, stiffness, and energy absorption of contact wave springs. Two designs, that is, rectangular and variable thickness wave springs, were chosen and the design of experiment was devised using Minitab software, resulting in 24 samples. HP MultiJet Fusion (MJF) printer was used to manufacture the samples for performing uniaxial compression tests up to 10 cycles and 90% of the compressible distance to study the variation in mechanical properties due to changes in parameters. Experimental and simulation results showed that variable thickness wave springs have better load bearing, stiffness, and energy absorption compared with the rectangular counterparts. In addition to that, the number of waves per coil and the overlap are directly proportional to the load-bearing capacity as well as stiffness of the wave springs, while the constant wave height is responsible for more uniformly distributed stresses throughout the coils. Load-bearing capacity was increased by 62%, stiffness by 37%, and energy absorption by 20% once the number of waves per coil is increased from 5 to 6 in rectangular wave springs. Overall, the parametric variations significantly affect the performance of wave springs; thus, designers can choose the optimized values of investigated parameters to design customized wave springs for specific applications as per load/stiffness requirements.

In this paper, we propose exponentiated XLindley (EXL) distribution. The novel model is adaptable due to the mixt shapes of its density and failure rate functions. The following key statistical properties of EXL distribution are derived: quantile function, moments, hazard function, mean residual life, and Rényi entropy. The parameters are estimated using the maximum likelihood, Anderson Darling, Cramer von Misses, maximum product spacing, ordinary and weighted least square estimation procedures. To examine the behavior of the estimate, Monte Carlo simulation is used. Further Bayesian technique is also utilized to estimate the EXL parameters. The traceplot and Geweke diagnostics are used to track the convergence of simulated processes. The applicability of the EXL distribution is demonstrated by three datasets from different domains such as mortality rate due to COVID-19, precipitation in inches, and failure time for repairable items. The proposed distribution provides efficient results as compared to renowned competitive distributions.

BACKGROUND: Chronic heart failure (HF) is frequently associated with various comorbidities. These comorbid conditions, such as anemia, diabetes mellitus, renal insufficiency, and sleep apnea, can significantly impact the prognosis of patients with HF. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to synthesize current evidence on the prevalence, impact, and management of comorbidities in patients with chronic HF. METHODS: A comprehensive review was conducted, with a rigorous selection process. Out of an initial pool of 59,030 articles identified across various research modalities, 134 articles were chosen for inclusion. The selection spanned various research methods, from randomized controlled trials to observational studies. RESULTS: Comorbidities are highly prevalent in patients with HF and contribute to increased hospitalization rates and mortality. Despite advances in therapies for HF with reduced ejection fraction, options for treating HF with preserved ejection fraction remain sparse. Existing treatment protocols often lack standardization, reflecting a limited understanding of the intricate relationships between HF and associated comorbidities. CONCLUSION: There is a pressing need for a multidisciplinary, tailored approach to manage HF and its intricate comorbidities. This review underscores the importance of ongoing research efforts to devise targeted treatment strategies for HF patients with various comorbid conditions.

Novel 2D layered MXene materials were first reported in 2011 at Drexel University. MXenes are widely used in multidisciplinary applications due to their anomalous electrical conductivity, high surface area, and chemical, mechanical, and physical properties. This review summarises MXene synthesis and applications in environmental sensing. The first section describes different methods for MXene synthesis, including fluorinated and non-fluorinated methods. MXene's layered structure, surface terminal groups, and the space between layers significantly impact its properties. Different methods to separate different MXene layers are also discussed using various intercalation reagents and commercially synthesized MXene without compromising the environment. This review also explains the effect of MXene's surface functionalization on its characteristics. The second section of the review describes gas and pesticide sensing applications of Mxenes and its composites. Its good conductivity, surface functionalization with negatively charged groups, intrinsic chemical nature, and good mechanical stability make it a prominent material for room temperature sensing of environmental samples, such as polar and nonpolar gases, volatile organic compounds, and pesticides. This review will enhance the young scientists' knowledge of MXene-based materials and stimulate their diversity and hybrid conformation in environmental sensing applications.

Tenofovir (TFV) is an antiviral drug used to treat the co-infections of HIV/HBV viruses. Accurate monitoring of TFV drug levels is essential for evaluating patient adherence, optimizing dosage, and assessing treatment efficacy. Herein, we propose an innovative electrochemical sensing approach by using the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzyme with the support of BaTiO3 nanoparticles. An attractive sensitivity and selectivity of the developed sensor towards TFV detection were achieved. First, the nanoparticles were synthesized by following a single-step sol-gel method and characterized through various analytical techniques, including SEM, EDX, FT-IR, BET, zeta potential, XRD, and UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy. The suggested mechanism demonstrated the formation of a strong bond between TFV and the ALP enzyme, primarily through the phosphate group, resulting in enzyme inhibition. Various parameters like nanoparticle amount, electrode modification time with enzyme and BaTiO3 nanoparticles, and drug incubation time were optimized. The biosensor demonstrated an outstanding limit of detection (LOD) of 0.09 nM and recovery percentages of 98.6-106% in human blood serum, indicating adequate repeatability and selectivity. The proposed biosensor can be converted into a portable device for measuring small sample volumes and observing patients for immediate medical care or personalized therapies. It achieved better sensitivity compared to existing methods, making it suitable for precise drug detection in microdoses.

Background: Given that there is already evidence of a neural network that connects the brain and gut and that the gut microbiota actively modulates gut health, it is crucial to know which foods, supplements, and medications to use or avoid when treating any disease that causes dementia or cognitive impairment. Previous research has examined the relationships between vitamins, antibiotics, and gut microbiota and the correlations between these factors and dementia. The question arises of how these three factors interact together and if evidence suggests one element is more important than the others in the pathogenesis and development of dementia. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) standards were followed when conducting this review. The papers' publication dates varied from (2012-2022). Cochrane/EMBASE, PEDro, and PubMed/Medline databases were searched. The precise terms "gut microbiota," vitamins," antibiotics," and "dementia" were included in the search method, along with the conjunctions "OR" and "AND." Results: Gut dysbiosis has a significant impact on cognition, brain function, and the development and progression of dementia. The two most popular probiotics used in studies linked to cognition benefits were Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Numerous scales were used to evaluate cognition, but the mini-mental state examination was the most popular, and the most prevalent impairment was Alzheimer's disease. The supplements with the most significant impact on gut microbiota were vitamin B-12 and folic acid. Conclusion: This systematic review concluded that vitamins, gut microbiota and antibiotics have a close association with the development of dementia. More research is required to establish causality and elucidate the underlying mechanisms because there is still little evidence connecting the interactions of vitamins, medications, and microbiota with dementia. The complexity of interactions between genetics, lifestyle factors, and comorbidities, as well as the heterogeneity of dementia, may make it more challenging to interpret the findings.

Biocompatible anti-inflammatory lignin-capped Ag (LCAg) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized for the delivery of galloyl ß-sitosterol (Galloyl-BS). ß-Sitosterol (BS) is effective against inflammatory responses, like cancer-induced inflammations. BS was modified via gallic acid esterification to enhance its anti-inflammatory potential. LCAg NPs were synthesized by a green method and loaded with galloyl-BS. For comparison, pure BS was also loaded onto LCAg NPs in a separate assembly. The antioxidant potential of Galloyl-BS was greater (IC50 177 µM) than pure BS. Materials were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, XRD, and Zeta potential. Using UV-Vis spectroscopy, drug release experiments were performed by varying pH, time, concentration, and temperature. Maximum drug release was observed after 18 h at pH 6 and 40 °C. Galloyl-BS showed improved drug loading efficiency, release %age, and antioxidant activity compared to pure BS when loaded onto LCAg NPs. DLCAg exhibited excellent anti-inflammatory activity in rat models. These findings indicate that galloyl-BS (drug)-loaded LCAg (DLCAg) NPs have the potential as an anti-inflammatory agent without any prior release and scavenging in normal cells.

Fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising sensing materials with tunable and robust structural properties and remarkable luminescent capabilities. In this study, a novel dual-emission fluorescent metal-organic framework (EY@MOF-5) composite is synthesized by a one-pot bottle-around-ship approach. Eosin Y (EY) is encapsulated in MOF-5 to enhance its fluorescence properties and selectivity, effectively addressing typical MOF-5 limitations. EY@MOF-5 serves as a versatile dual-functional fluorescent sensor for two different analytes, daclatasvir (DCT) and nitenpyram (NTP), showing an impressive linear range of 10-200 nM and 0.1-300 µM, with detection limits of 233 pM and 65 nM, respectively. The established method is ultrafast, highly sensitive, and extremely selective for DCT and NTP detection in complex biological and food samples. Fluorescence results are compared and validated with the recommended UPLC method. Then, a smartphone-integrated sensing system is introduced for on-site, real-time, and quantitative analysis of DCT and NTP. The smartphone-assisted intelligent sensing method manifests promising results for DCT and NTP monitoring in biological and food samples, demonstrating its promising potential for the on-site detection of biologically and environmentally significant analytes.

To further reveal the molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of continuous cropping disorders in patchouli, this study analyzed the function of calcium dependent protein kinase (CDPK) genes at the molecular level in patchouli continuous cropping disorders. The findings unveiled the presence of 45 PcCDPK genes within the complete patchouli genome dataset. These genes exhibited a range of molecular weights from 50.78 to 78.96 kDa and aliphatic index values spanning from 74.42 to 88.49, and are shown to be hydrophilic proteins. The evolution of 45 PcCDPK members was divided into 4 subfamilies, with a total of 65 pairs of collinear genes. Each PcCDPK contains a STKc-CAMK domain and four EF-hand structures exhibiting a certain degree of conservatism during evolution. Transcriptome data further supported the significance of PcCDPK25 and PcCDPK38 genes, showing substantial upregulation, which was corroborated by qRT-PCR results. The 1629 bp and 1716 bp CDS sequences were obtained by cloning the PcCDPK25 and PcCDPK38 genes, respectively, and subcellular localization showed that both proteins were localized on the plasma membrane. This comprehensive study provides molecular-level confirmation of the pivotal roles played by CDPK genes in the emergence of continuous cropping challenges in patchouli plants, establishing a crucial foundation for a deeper comprehension of the molecular mechanisms underpinning these obstacles.

Prostate cancer is a significant health concern for men, emphasizing the need for effective treatment strategies. Dose-escalated external beam radiotherapy shows promise in improving outcomes but presents challenges due to radiation effects on nearby structures, such as the rectum. Innovative techniques, including rectal spacers, have emerged to mitigate these effects. This study comprehensively assessed tissue responses following the implantation of the Bioprotect biodegradable fillable balloon as a rectal spacer in a rat model. Evaluation occurred at multiple time points (4, 26, and 52 weeks) post-implantation. Results revealed localized tissue responses consistent with the expected reaction to biodegradable materials, characterized by mild to moderate fibrotic reactions and encapsulation, underscoring the safety and biocompatibility of the balloon. Importantly, no other adverse events occurred, and the animals remained healthy throughout the study. These findings support its potential clinical utility in radiotherapy treatments to enhance patient outcomes and minimize long-term implant-related complications, serving as a benchmark for future similar studies and offering valuable insights for researchers in the field. In conclusion, the findings from this study highlight the safety, biocompatibility, and potential clinical applicability of the Bioprotect biodegradable fillable balloon as a promising rectal spacer in mitigating radiation-induced complications during prostate cancer radiotherapy.

The current study reports the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using a polar extract of Cotoneaster nummularia leaves. Various analytical techniques, like UV-Vis spectrophotometry, FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, and EDX were employed for characterisation. These techniques confirmed the stability of Ag NPs in solution and endorsed the interaction between different groups and Ag, crystal phase, surface morphology, and size of Ag NPs. UV-Vis spectrophotometer displayed SPR absorption bands ranging from 380 to 470 nm, characteristic of Ag NPs, within 1.0 h exposure to sunlight. XRD and SEM discovered the face-centered cubic crystals of Ag NPs with a 122.8 ± 1.1 nm average diameter. The bands at 525 cm-1 in FT-IR spectrum supported the development of Ag NPs. The Ag NPs showed antimicrobial potential against three pathogenic bacterial strains and two fungal strains. The wound healing results, as studied by tissue re-development and wound closure in rabbits were comparable to standard Sufre tulle® dressing.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: While proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy has proven to be effective in managing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a notable portion of patients who experience GERD symptoms may not respond to this treatment. Research suggests that roughly 30% of individuals with a presumed GERD diagnosis may continue to experience symptoms, whether partially or completely, even when receiving PPI therapy. The aim of this study was to assess the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases with a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB), vonoprazan, in terms of its effectiveness and safety in the Pakistani population. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, observational study was conducted in Pakistan. This study included 1,642 patients from January 2023 to August 2023, aged 18 years, with gastrointestinal disorders. All demographic data, medical history, GERD severity assessment questionnaire (GerdQ), and laboratory parameters, including stool assessment for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), were observed. Patients were orally treated with vonoprazan at doses of 10 mg or 20 mg, once or twice daily. Statistical analysis was done by one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: Out of 1,642 patients, 840 (51.2%) were males and 802 (48.8%) were females, with a mean age of 39.81±14.61 years. The mean GerdQ score at baseline was 20.37±15.87, 7.24±8.15 at the second week of treatment, and 3.70±6.31 at the fourth week of treatment (p<0.001). 90.74% of patients achieved H. pylori eradication. Most patients were acid regurgitation and heartburn-free for >70% of days. Most of the patients, 1,283 (78.13%), exhibited good treatment compliance. Mild adverse events were reported in 37 (2.3%) patients. CONCLUSIONS: The use of vonoprazan significantly reduced the likelihood of GERD by improving symptoms and was also highly effective in the elimination of H. pylori infections. Vonoprazan was generally well tolerated.
