RESUMO

CASE HISTORIES: Medical records from a single UK-based referral hospital were retrospectively reviewed to identify brachycephalic dogs who had undergone corrective airway surgery and were nebulised with adrenaline in the post-operative period. Ninety dogs were identified between August 2014 and March 2020. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Agitation following nebulisation with adrenaline was uncommon, with 86/90 (96%) dogs remaining calm, and overall outcome was reported as satisfactory in 68 of 73 (89%) dogs for which this information was available. Median respiratory rate at T0 (prior to first nebulisation) and T60 (1 hour following nebulisation) were both 20 breaths/minute with a median difference of 0 (95% CI = 0-0) breaths/minute (p = 0.657). Median heart rate at T0 and T60 were both 80 beats/minute with a median difference of 3 (95% CI = -10 to 7) beats/minute (p = 0.948). Two dogs experienced tachycardia, but this was not associated with the timing of administration of adrenaline. Complications reported in the 24 hours following surgery included regurgitation (n = 36), increased respiratory noise and effort (n = 10), aspiration pneumonia (n = 4), and inappetence (n = 3). A temporary tracheostomy tube was placed in 13 (14.4%) dogs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Nebulisation with adrenaline is feasible, results in minimal increases in respiratory rate and heart rate and is associated with agitation in only a small number of dogs.

RESUMO

Equilibration of 1,9- and 7,8-C(70)H(2) has allowed the relative free energy of these isomers to be measured. These "simplest hydrocarbon derivatives of C(70)" are formed by hydroboration of C(70) at room temperature. Analysis of the platinum-catalyzed equilibration of these isomers yielded a relative free energy at 295 kelvin of 1.4 +/- 0.2 kilocalories per mole, with the 1,9 isomer being more stable. This value is in excellent agreement with the ab initio HF/6-31 G(*) calculated energy difference of 1.3 kilocalories per mole, whereas semiempirical calculations gave poor agreement.

RESUMO

The reaction of C(60) with BH(3): tetrahydrofuran in toluene followed by hydrolysis yielded C(60)H(2). This product was separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and characterized as the addition product of H(2) to a 6,6-ring fusion (1alb isomer). The (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum of the product remained a sharp singlet between -80 degrees and +100 degrees C, which suggests a static structure on the NMR time scale. Hydrolysis of the proposed borane addition product with acetic acid-d(1) or D(2)O yielded C(60)HD, and its (3)J(HD) coupling constant is consistent with vicinal addition. The observation of a single C(60)H(2) isomer is in complete agreement with earlier calculations that indicated that at most 2 of the 23 possible isomers of C(60) would be observable at equilibrium at room temperature. These results suggest that organoborane chemistry may be applied to further functionalization of fullerenes.

RESUMO

A nine-year-old mixed breed dog was presented with a history of mild generalized seizures, weakness, and muscle fasciculations, following periods of excitement and exercise. Investigative procedures included haematology, chemical pathology, faecal analysis, urinalysis, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, hormone assays, computerized axial tomography and scintigraphic imaging. Results of these investigations revealed hypoglycaemia (blood glucose 1.9 mmol l-1, hyperinsulinism (111 muu ml-1) and an amended insulin-glucose ratio of 2643. The glucagon tolerance test was typical for an insulin producing pancreatic islet cell tumour and pancreas scintigraphic imaging revealed focal lesions in the pancreas and liver. Seizures were initially controlled by dietary means and by limiting exercise. Eventual control was obtained by treatment with prednisolone (1 mg kg-1 on alternate days) and diazoxide (10 mg kg-1 in divided doses daily). Post mortem examination confirmed the presence of a pancreatic islet cell adenocarcinoma with hepatic metastasis.
