Self-medication (SM) forms an important part of public health strategy. Nonetheless, little research has been performed to understand the current state of self-medication in the European Union (EU). Utilizing data from the third wave of the European Health Interview Surveys, this study finds an estimated SM prevalence of 34.3% in the EU (95%CI = 34.1-34.5%; n = 255,758). SM prevalence, as well as SM prevalence inequality between men and women, varies substantially between EU member countries. Via multivariable analysis, we also identify a number of variables associated with SM, most notably the substantial impact of health systems on SM behavior (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] = 4.00; 95% Confidence Interval [95%CI] = 3.81-4.21). Several demographics are also associated with greater SM prevalence, including those aged 25-44 (versus ages 75+: AOR = 1.21; 95%CI = 1.12-1.31), women (AOR = 1.74; 95%CI = 1.68-1.81), immigrants born in other EU states (AOR = 1.16; 95%CI = 1.04-1.30), those with higher education (AOR = 1.83; 95%CI = 1.60-2.09), and urban dwellers (AOR = 1.14; 95%CI = 1.04-1.30). Additionally, long-standing health problems (AOR = 1.39; 95%CI = 1.33-1.45), visits to doctors (both general practitioners and specialists) (AOR = 1.21, 95%CIs = 1.15-1.26, 1.17-1.26), and unmet needs for health care due to waiting lists (AOR = 1.38; 95%CI = 1.23-1.55) or inability to afford medical examinations/treatment (AOR = 1.27; 95%CI = 1.12-1.42) serve as conditioners for SM. We also find that smoking (AOR = 1.05; 95%CI = 1.01-1.10), vaping (AOR = 1.19; 95%CI = 1.06-1.32), drinking alcohol (AOR = 1.23; 95%CI = 1.19-1.28), and higher levels of physical activity (AOR = 1.27; 95%CI = 1.22-1.32) are factors associated with SM. Analysis of these variables reveals that though women self-medicate more than men, the patterns that govern their consumption are similar.

Background: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and fatal familial insomnia (FFI) are prion diseases characterized by severe neurodegenerative conditions and a short duration of illness. Methods: This study explores the characteristics of hospitalizations for CJD and FFI in Spain from 2016 to 2022 using the Spanish National Hospital Discharge Database (SNHDD). Results: We identified a total of 1063 hospital discharges, including 1020 for CJD and 43 for FFI. Notably, the number of hospitalized patients with FFI showed a significant peak in 2017. The average length of hospital stay (LOHS) was 13 days for CJD and 6 days for FFI, with in-hospital mortality rates (IHM) of 36.37% for CJD and 32.56% for FFI. Among CJD patients, the average LOHS was 14 days, with a significantly longer duration for those who experienced IHM. Conclusions: The presence of sepsis or pneumonia and older age were associated with a higher IHM rate among CJD patients. The total estimated cost for managing CJD and FFI patients over the study period was EUR 6,346,868. This study offers new insights into the epidemiology and healthcare resource utilization of CJD and FFI patients, which may inform future research directions and public health strategies.

INTRODUCTION: The objectives of this study were to examine temporal trends in the incidence of bariatric surgery (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG)) in patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Outcomes of hospitalization and the impact of T2DM on these outcomes were also analyzed. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed an observational study with the Spanish national hospital discharge database. Obese patients with and without T2DM who underwent RYGB and SG between 2016 and 2022 were identified. Propensity score matching (PSM) and logistic regression were used to compare patients with and without T2DM and to evaluate the effect of T2DM and other variables on outcomes of surgery. A variable "severity" was created to cover patients who died in hospital or were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). RESULTS: A total of 32,176 bariatric surgery interventions were performed (28.86% with T2DM). 31.57% of RYGBs and 25.53% of SG patients had T2DM. The incidence of RYGB and SG increased significantly between 2016 and 2022 (p<0.001), with a higher incidence in those with T2DM than in those without (incidence rate ratio 4.07 (95% CI 3.95 to 4.20) for RYGB and 3.02 (95% CI 2.92 to 3.14) for SG). In patients who underwent SG, admission to the ICU and severity were significantly more frequent in patients with T2DM than in those without (both p<0.001). In the multivariate analysis, having T2DM was associated with more frequent severity in those who received SG (OR 1.23; 95% CI 1.07 to 1.42). CONCLUSIONS: Between 2016 and 2022, bariatric surgery procedures performed in Spain increased in patients with and without T2DM. More interventions were performed on patients with T2DM than on patients without T2DM. RYGB was the most common procedure in patients with T2DM. The presence of T2DM was associated with more severity after SG.

BACKGROUND: We used the Spanish national hospital discharge data from 2016 to 2022 to analyze procedures and hospital outcomes among patients aged ≥ 18 years admitted for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) according to diabetes mellitus (DM) status (non-diabetic, type 1-DM or type 2-DM). METHODS: We built logistic regression models for STEMI/NSTEMI stratified by DM status to identify variables associated with in-hospital mortality (IHM). We analyzed the effect of DM on IHM. RESULTS: Spanish hospitals reported 201,950 STEMIs (72.7% non-diabetic, 0.5% type 1-DM, and 26.8% type 2-DM; 26.3% female) and 167,285 NSTEMIs (61.6% non-diabetic, 0.6% type 1-DM, and 37.8% type 2-DM; 30.9% female). In STEMI, the frequency of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) increased among non-diabetic people (60.4% vs. 68.6%; p < 0.001) and people with type 2-DM (53.6% vs. 66.1%; p < 0.001). In NSTEMI, the frequency of PCI increased among non-diabetic people (43.7% vs. 45.7%; p < 0.001) and people with type 2-DM (39.1% vs. 42.8%; p < 0.001). In NSTEMI, the frequency of coronary artery by-pass grafting (CABG) increased among non-diabetic people (2.8% vs. 3.5%; p < 0.001) and people with type 2-DM (3.7% vs. 5.0%; p < 0.001). In the entire population, lower IHM was associated with undergoing PCI (odds ratio [OR] [95% confidence interval] = 0.34 [0.32-0.35] in STEMI; 0.24 [0.23-0.26] in NSTEMI) or CABG (0.33 [0.27-0.40] in STEMI; 0.45 [0.38-0.53] in NSTEMI). IHM decreased over time in STEMI (OR = 0.86 [0.80-0.93]). Type 2-DM was associated with higher IHM in STEMI (OR = 1.06 [1.01-1.11]). CONCLUSIONS: PCI and CABG were associated with lower IHM in people admitted for STEMI/NSTEMI. Type 2-DM was associated with IHM in STEMI.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal pneumonia (PP) is a serious infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. The aim of this study was to analyze the comorbidity factors that influenced the mortality in patients with asplenia according to PP. METHODS: Discharge reports from the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set (MBDS) was used to retrospectively analyze patients with asplenia and PP, from 1997 to 2021. Elixhauser Comorbidity Index (ECI) was calculated to predict in-hospital mortality (IHM). RESULTS: 97,922 patients with asplenia were included and 381 cases of PP were identified. The average age for men was 63.87 years and for women 65.99 years. In all years, ECI was larger for splenectomized than for non-splenectomized patients, with men having a higher mean ECI than women. An association was found between risk factors ECI, splenectomy, age group, sex, pneumococcal pneumonia, and increased mortality (OR = 0.98; 95% CI: 0.97-0.99; p < 0.001). The IHM increased steadily with the number of comorbidities and index scores in 1997-2021. CONCLUSIONS: Asplenia remain a relevant cause of hospitalization in Spain. Comorbidities reflected a great impact in patients with asplenia and PP, which would mean higher risk of mortality.

BACKGROUND: Food-induced anaphylaxis (FIA) is a major public health problem resulting in serious clinical complications, emergency department visits, hospitalization, and death. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the epidemiology and the trends in hospitalizations because of FIA in Spain between 2016 and 2021. METHODS: An observational descriptive study was conducted using data from the Spanish National Hospital discharge database. Information was coded based on the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision. The study population was analyzed by gender and age group and according to food triggers, clinical characteristics, admission to the intensive care unit, severity, and in-hospital mortality. The annual incidence of hospitalizations because of FIA per 100,000 person-years was estimated and analyzed using Poisson regression models. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed to identify which variables were associated with severe FIA. RESULTS: A total of 2161 hospital admissions for FIA were recorded in Spain from 2016 to 2021. The overall incidence rate was 0.77 cases per 100,000 person-years. The highest incidence was found in those aged <15 years (3.68), with lower figures among those aged 15 to 59 years (0.25) and ≥60 years (0.29). Poisson regression showed a significant increase in incidence from 2016 to 2021 only among children (3.78 per 100,000 person-years vs 5.02 per 100,000 person-years; P=.04). The most frequent food triggers were "milk and dairy products" (419/2161, 19.39% of cases) and "peanuts or tree nuts and seeds" (409/2161, 18.93%). Of the 2161 patients, 256 (11.85%) were hospitalized because FIA required admission to the intensive care unit, and 11 (0.51%) patients died in the hospital. Among children, the most severe cases of FIA appeared in patients aged 0 to 4 years (40/99, 40%). Among adults, 69.4% (111/160) of cases occurred in those aged 15 to 59 years. Multivariable logistic regression showed the variables associated with severe FIA to be age 15 to 59 years (odds ratio 5.1, 95% CI 3.11-8.36), age ≥60 years (odds ratio 3.87, 95% CI 1.99-7.53), and asthma (odds ratio 1.71,95% CI 1.12-2.58). CONCLUSIONS: In Spain, the incidence of hospitalization because of FIA increased slightly, although the only significant increase (P=.04) was among children. Even if in-hospital mortality remains low and stable, the proportion of severe cases is high and has not improved from 2016 to 2021, with older age and asthma being risk factors for severity. Surveillance must be improved, and preventive strategies must be implemented to reduce the burden of FIA.

BACKGROUND: The misuse of psychotropic medication has increased during the past decade, especially among adolescents. The aim of our study was to describe the prevalence and patterns of the nonmedical use of benzodiazepines (BDZ) and Z-hypnotics among school-aged adolescents through the lens of sex. In addition, we sought to analyze the temporal evolution of the nonmedical use of these drugs during the period 2016-2021. METHODS: The temporal evolution of the nonmedical use of these drugs was analyzed based on survey data collected in 2016, 2018 and 2021, which includes the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic. To assess the possible effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, the year at survey was conducted was introduced as a categorical variable. We used data from the Spanish State Survey on Drug Use in Secondary Education, which covers drug use among students aged 14-18 years. Using multivariate logistic regression models, we estimated the independent effect of different variables (sociodemographic data, use of other psychoactive substances, risk perception and availability) on the nonmedical use of BDZ and Z-hypnotics. RESULTS: In total, survey data from 95,700 adolescents were included in our analysis. The nonmedical use of BDZ and Z-hypnotics increased among adolescents during the study period. The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) from 2016 to 2018 was 1.11 (95% CI 0.94-1.31) and from 2018 to 2021 the AOR was 1.26 (95% CI 1.08-1.46), using 2016 and 2018, respectively, as reference years. The nonmedical use of BDZ and Z-hypnotics was more likely in adolescent girls than boys (AOR = 2.11). The nonmedical use of prescription opioids (AOR = 3.44), novel psychoactive substances and other illicit psychoactive drugs (AOR = 4.10) were risk factors for the nonmedical use of BDZ and Z-hypnotics in both sexes. Use of cannabis (AOR = 1.38) was a predictor of nonmedical use in female adolescents only. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the trend of the nonmedical use of BDZ and Z-hypnotics among school-aged adolescents in Spain increased between 2016 and 2021. Among adolescents aged 14 to 18, the probability of nonmedical use of these psychoactive substances was twice as high for female adolescents as for male adolescents.

Background/Objectives: To analyze changes in the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients hospitalized for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AE-COPD); to evaluate hospital outcomes according to AF status, assessing sex differences; to identify factors associated with AF presence; and to analyze variables associated with in-hospital mortality (IHM) in AE-COPD patients with AF. Methods: We used data from the Registry of Specialized Care Activity-Basic Minimum Data Set (RAE-CMBD) to select patients aged ≥40 years with COPD in Spain (2016-2021). We stratified the study population according to AF presence and sex. The propensity score matching (PSM) methodology was employed to create comparable groups based on age, admission year, and comorbidities at the time of hospitalization. Results: We identified 399,196 hospitalizations that met the inclusion criteria. Among them, 20.58% had AF. The prevalence of AF rose from 2016 to 2021 (18.26% to 20.95%), though the increase was only significant in men. The median length of hospital stay (LOHS) and IHM were significantly higher in patients with AF than in those without AF. After PSM, IHM remained significantly higher for man and women with AF. Older age, male sex, and several comorbidities were factors associated with AF. Additionally, older age, male sex, different comorbidities including COVID-19, hospitalization in the year 2020, mechanical ventilation, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission were associated with higher IHM in patients with AE-COPD and AF. Conclusions: AF prevalence was high in patients hospitalized for AE-COPD, was higher in men than in women, and increased over time. AF presence was associated with worse outcomes. The variables associated with IHM in hospitalized AE-COPD patients with AF were older age, male sex, different comorbidities including COVID-19 presence, hospitalization in the year 2020, need of mechanical ventilation, and ICU admission.

Objective: This cohort study used Sankey plots and exponential bar plots for visualizing the fluctuating nature and trajectory of post-COVID pain in previously hospitalized COVID-19 survivors. Methods: A cohort of 1266 subjects hospitalised because of COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic were scheduled for a telephone interview at 8.4 (T1), 13.2 (T2), and 18.3 (T3) months in average after hospitalization for collecting data about post-COVID pain. Patients were asked for about pain symptomatology that was attributed to the infection. Hospitalization and clinical data were collected from medical records. Results: The prevalence of myalgia as COVID-19-associated symptom was 29.82% (n = 389) at hospitalization (T0). The prevalence of post-COVID pain was 41.07% (n = 520) at T1, 34.29% (n = 434) at T2, and 28.47% (n = 360) at T3. The recovery exponential curve revealed a decrease trend visualizing that post-COVID pain improved over the time span investigated. Pain in the lower extremity and widespread pain were the most prevalent locations. Female sex (OR 1.507, 95% CI 1.047-2.169), pre-existing pain symptoms (OR 1.724, 95% CI 1.237-2.403), headache as onset-symptom (OR 2.374, 95% CI 1.550-3.639), days at hospital (OR 1.012, 95% CI 1.000-1.025), and presence of post-COVID pain at T1 (OR 13.243, 95% CI 9.428-18.601) were associated with post-COVID pain at T2. Only the presence of post-COVID pain at T1 (OR 5.383, 95% CI 3.896-7.439) was associated with post-COVID pain at T3. Conclusion: Current results show a fluctuating evolution with a decreasing tendency of post-COVID pain during the first years after hospitalization. The development of post-COVID pain soon after SARS-CoV-2 infection predispose for long-lasting chronic pain.

INTRODUCTION: To assess time trends in incidence, clinical characteristics, complications, and hospital outcomes among patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D), with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and patients without diabetes who underwent kidney transplant (KT); to identify variables associated with in-hospital mortality (IHM); and to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used a nationwide discharge database to select KT recipients admitted to Spanish hospitals from 2016 to 2020. We stratified patients according to diabetes status. We used multivariable logistic regression to identify the variables associated with IHM. RESULTS: A total of 14 594 KTs were performed in Spain (T2D, 22.28%; T1D, 3.72%). The number of KTs rose between 2016 and 2019 and and decreased from 2019 to 2020 in all groups. In patients with T2D, the frequency of KT complications increased from 21.08% in 2016 to 34.17% in 2020 (p<0.001). Patients with T2D had significantly more comorbidity than patients with T1D and patients without diabetes (p<0.001). Patients with T1D experienced KT rejection significantly more frequently (8.09%) than patients with T2D (5.57%).COVID-19 was recorded in 26 out of the 2444 KTs performed in 2020, being found in 6 of the 39 patients deceased that year (15.38%) and in 0.83% of the survivors.The variables associated with IHM were comorbidity and complications of KT. The presence of T1D was associated with IHM (OR 2.6; 95% CI 1.36 to 5.16) when patients without diabetes were the reference category. However, T2D was not associated with a higher IHM (OR 0.86; 95% CI 0.61 to 1.2). CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a decrease in the number of transplants. Patients with T1D have more rejection of the transplanted organ than patients with T2D. Fewer women with T2D undergo KT. The presence of T1D is a risk factor for IHM.

In 2020, there were approximately 50,865 anal cancer cases and 36,068 penile cancer cases worldwide. HPV is considered the main causal agent for the development of anal cancer and one of the causal agents responsible for the development of penile cancer. The aim of this epidemiological, descriptive, retrospective study was to describe the burden of hospitalization associated with anal neoplasms in men and women and with penis neoplasms in men in Spain from 2016 to 2020. The National Hospital Data Surveillance System of the Ministry of Health, Conjunto Mínimo Básico de Datos, provided the discharge information used in this observational retrospective analysis. A total of 3,542 hospitalizations due to anal cancer and 4,270 hospitalizations due to penile cancer were found; For anal cancer, 57.4% of the hospitalizations occurred in men, and these hospitalizations were also associated with significantly younger mean age, longer hospital stays and greater costs than those in women. HIV was diagnosed in 11.19% of the patients with anal cancer and 1.74% of the patients with penile cancer. The hospitalization rate was 2.07 for men and 1.45 for women per 100,000 in anal cancer and of 4.38 per 100,000 men in penile cancer. The mortality rate was 0.21 for men and 0.12 for women per 100,000 in anal cancer and 0.31 per 100.000 men in penile cancer and the case-fatality rate was 10.07% in men and 8,26% in women for anal cancer and 7.04% in penile cancer. HIV diagnosis significantly increased the cost of hospitalization. For all the studied diagnoses, the median length of hospital stays and hospitalization cost increased with age. Our study offers relevant data on the burden of hospitalization for anal and penile cancer in Spain. This information can be useful for future assessment on the impact of preventive measures, such as screening or vaccination in Spain.

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage for the initiation of substance use worldwide, which is one of the main risk-taking behaviors that may impact adolescents' physical and mental well-being. The aims of this study were to (1) assess the prevalence of the co-use of tranquilizers, sedatives, and sleeping pills with alcohol (TSSp&AC) by gender in the Spanish adolescent population in 2018 and (2) identify the variables associated with TSSp&AC. An observational cross-sectional study following STROBE guidelines was conducted. We analyzed data from 38,010 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years old (18,579 males and 19,431 females) who participated in ESTUDES (Survey on Drug Use in Secondary Education in Spain) 2018. Female adolescents reported a higher prevalence of TSSp&AC than males (p < 0.001). The factors associated with female co-use were being 16-18 years of age (OR 1.65); the consumption of tobacco (OR 1.73), cocaine (OR 1.84), other illicit psychoactive drugs (OR 1.89); and novel illicit psychoactive drugs (OR 1.74); no perceived health risk from the consumption of TSSps (OR 2.45); and the perceived availability of TSSps (OR 2.23) and alcohol (OR 2.09). There are several factors associated with TSSp&AC in Spanish female adolescents with potential implications for healthcare providers.

Anatomical or functional asplenia constitutes a risk factor for Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) infection, being more frequent in children and the elderly and in people with multiple comorbidities. We aimed to describe the impact of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) on the clinical features and outcomes of patients hospitalized for asplenia in Spain. Discharge reports from the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set were used to retrospectively analyze hospital discharge data with a diagnosis of asplenia from 1997 to 2021. A total of 132,257 patients with asplenia (splenectomized/non-splenectomized) were identified from the Spanish database. Among the cases, 177 (37.5%) patients with splenectomy and 295 (62.5%) patients without splenectomy developed IPD. The clinical presentations (non-infection vs. infection) did not significantly differ between the two reference groups, except for patients with COPD, rheumatoid disease, AIDS, other neurological disorders, metastatic cancer, and drug abuse. The risk factors for IPD were also more frequently reported in patients without splenectomy (p < 0.001) and with comorbidities (p = 0.005). The study of patients with asplenia provides relevant information about the state of SP infection. This epidemiological tracking can serve to better understand the comorbidities that affect them, the risk factors for the disease, the prediction of antibiotic use, and vaccination in public health, among other factors.

AIMS: To analyze changes in the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients hospitalized due to asthma; to compare hospital outcomes in asthma patients with and without AF, assessing sex differences; to identify variables associated with the presence of AF; and to analyze the factors associated with in-hospital mortality (IHM) among asthma patients with AF. METHODS: We used data from the Registry of Specialized Care Activity-Basic Minimum Data Set to select all patients aged ≥40 years with an asthma diagnosis in Spain, from 2016 to 2021. We stratified the study population according to the presence of AF and sex. RESULTS: We identified 65,233 hospitalizations that met the inclusion criteria (14.85 % with AF). The prevalence of AF significantly increased over time, with the male sex being a protective factor for its presentation. IHM were significantly higher in patients with AF. Older age, being a woman, congestive heart failure, renal disease, obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension, and hyperthyroidism were associated with the presence of AF. Advanced age and the presence of cancer and COVID-19 were factors associated with a higher IHM, as well as admission to an intensive care unit and the use of invasive mechanical ventilation. There were no association of sex with the IHM. CONCLUSIONS: AF is highly prevalent among subjects hospitalized due to asthma, with this prevalence having increased significantly in Spain over time. The presence of AF in patients with asthma was associated significantly with a higher LOHS and IHM. Sex was not associated with IHM in these patients.

(1) Background: We analyzed the association between atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (AF) and in-hospital mortality (IHM) among patients who underwent solid organ transplants in Spain from 2004 to 2021. (2) Methods: We gathered information from all hospital admissions for lung, liver, kidney, and heart transplants. (3) Results: A total of 71,827 transplants were analyzed (4598 lung transplants; 18,127 liver transplants; 45,262 kidney transplants; and 4734 heart transplants). One third of these were for women. Overall, the prevalence of AF was 6.8% and increased from 5.3% in 2004-2009 to 8.6% in 2016-2021. The highest prevalence of AF was found for heart transplants (24.0%), followed by lung transplants (14.7%). The rates for kidney and liver transplants were 5.3% and 4.1%, respectively. The AF code increased over time for all of the transplants analyzed (p < 0.001). The patients' IHM decreased significantly from 2004-2009 to 2016-2021 for all types of transplants. AF was associated with a higher IHM for all of the types of transplants analyzed, except for heart transplants. (4) Conclusions: The prevalence of AF among patients admitted for solid organ transplants was highest for those who underwent heart transplants. The mortality rate during the patients' admission for lung, liver, kidney, or heart transplants decreased over time. AF was independently associated with a higher risk of dying in the hospital for those who underwent lung, liver, or kidney transplants.

(1) Background: To assess and compare the temporal trends in the incidence, characteristics and hospital outcomes among children with and without asthma who were hospitalized with anaphylaxis in Spain from 2016 to 2021, and identify the variables associated with severe anaphylaxis among children with asthma. (2) Methods: An observational, retrospective study was conducted using a population-based database. The study population included pediatric patients with anaphylaxis. This population was stratified based on whether they had asthma. (3) Results: The number of hospital admissions was stable from 2016 to 2019, dropping in 2020 and raising to the highest number in 2021. A total of 60.63% of hospitalizations occurred in boys and the most common anaphylactic reactions were due to food consumption (67.28%), increasing over time. The in-hospital mortality (IHM) remained stable and under 1% in all the years studied. The incidence of anaphylaxis was 2.14 times higher in children with asthma than in those without asthma (IRR 2.14; 95% CI 1.87-2.44). Furthermore, it was 1.79 times higher in boys with asthma than in those without asthma (IRR 1.79; 95% CI 1.06-2.45) and 2.68 times higher in girls with asthma than in those without asthma (IRR 2.68; 95% CI 2.23-3.12). Asthma was not associated with severe anaphylaxis (OR 1.31; 95% CI 0.88-1.96). (4) Conclusions: The number of hospitalizations for anaphylaxis in children remained stable from 2016 to 2019, dropping in 2020 and recovering in 2021. IHM was low and remained stable during the study period. The incidence of hospitalizations for anaphylaxis was higher in asthmatic children than in non-asthmatics, but there were no differences in the occurrence of severe anaphylaxis among them.

Pain is a major health issue for healthcare systems, and access to pain treatment is a fundamental human right. Pain is a common symptom experienced in the post-COVID phase by a significant percentage of patients. This study describes the prevalence and associated factors associated with the use of opioid and non-opioid analgesics in subjects with post-COVID-19 condition. Sociodemographic data, post-COVID symptoms, health profile, and opioid and non-opioid analgesic consumption were collected in 390 subjects with post-COVID-19 condition. We analyzed the independent effect of all variables on opioid/non-opioid analgesic consumption by using logistic multivariate regressions. The prevalence of opioid and non-opioid analgesic consumption was 24.1% and 82.3%, respectively. Tramadol (17.18%) and codeine (7.95%) were the most commonly used opioid analgesics, and Paracetamol (70%) and ibuprofen (45.4%) were the most commonly used non-opioid analgesics. Females were more likely to consume non-opioid analgesics (aOR2.20, 95%CI 1.15, 4.22) than males. Marital status of married/partner vs. single (aOR2.96; 95% CI 1.43, 6.12), monthly income < EUR 1000 VS. > EUR 2000 (aOR3.81; 95% CI 1.37, 10.61), number of post-COVID symptoms < 5 (aOR2.64, 95%CI 1.18, 5.87), and anxiolytics consumption (aOR 1.85, 95%CI 1.05, 3.25) were associated with a greater likelihood of opioid analgesic consumption. Age > 55 years (aOR3.30, 95%CI 1.34, 8.09) and anxiolytics consumption (aOR2.61, 95%CI 1.36, 4.98) were associated with a greater likelihood of non-opioid analgesic consumption. Opioid analgesic consumption was highly associated (aOR 3.41, 95%CI 1.27, 6.11) with non-opioid analgesic consumption. The prevalence of opioid analgesic and non-opioid analgesic consumption in individuals with post-COVID-19 condition was 24.1% and 82.3%. Females with post-COVID-19 condition showed higher non-opioid analgesic consumption than men. Predictors of opioid consumption were marital status, lower monthly income, number of post-COVID symptoms, and anxiolytic consumption. Older age and anxiolytic consumption were predictors of non-opioid consumption.

Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) belongs to the family Herpesviridae. Herpes zoster (HZ) is caused by reactivation of latent VZV. It is associated with risk factors such as immunosenescence, immunosuppressive pathologies and pharmacological treatments. Patients with these risk factors are more likely to be hospitalized. Increases in HZ hospitalizations have been reported in many countries in recent years. The objective of this study is to estimate hospitalization rates, mortality rates and costs due to HZ during the worst years of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain (2020-2021). This is a descriptive study based on an analysis of information from the Minimum Basic Dataset and coded according to the Spanish version of the 10th International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM). Hospitalization, mortality and case-fatality rates, and median length of hospitalization were calculated.. The hospitalization rate was 14.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the mortality rate was 1.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Both increased considerably with age. In this time period, 92.3% of the registered cases were people over 50 years of age. Nevertheless, during the COVID-19 pandemic period, hospitalization rate decreased and the mortality rate increased from previous years. HZ hospitalization and mortality rates are relevant issues in the public health of older people. It is highly recommended to evaluate new vaccination strategies against VZV to include the HZ vaccine for health care for elderly people, as well as to reduce the disease burden and associated risk factors. The estimation of HZ disease hospitalization costs were 100,433,904.

(1) Background: To analyze the association between hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and in-hospital mortality (IHM) during hospital admission for solid organ transplant in Spain during 2004-2021. (2) Methods: We used national hospital discharge data to select all hospital admissions for kidney, liver, heart, and lung transplants. We stratified the data according to HAP status. To examine time trends, we grouped data into three consecutive 6-year periods (2004-2009; 2010-2015; and 2016-2021). We assessed in-hospital mortality (IHM) in logistic regression analyses and obtained odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). (3) Results: We identified a total of 71,827 transplants (45,262, kidney; 18,127, liver; 4734, heart; and 4598, lung). Two thirds of the patients were men. Overall, the rate of HAP during admission was 2.6% and decreased from 3.0% during 2004-2009 to 2.4% during 2016-2021. The highest rate of HAP corresponded to lung transplant (9.4%), whereas we found the lowest rate for kidney transplant (1.1%). Rates of HAP for liver and heart transplants were 3.8% and 6.3%, respectively. IHM was significantly lower during 2016-2021 compared to 2004-2009 for all types of transplants (ORs (CIs) = 0.65 (0.53-0.79) for kidney; 0.73 (0.63-0.84) for liver; 0.72 (0.59-0.87) for heart; and 0.39 (0.31-0.47) for lung). HAP was associated with IHM for all types of transplants (ORs (CIs) = 4.47 (2.85-9.08) for kidney; 2.96 (2.34-3.75) for liver; 1.86 (1.34-2.57) for heart; and 2.97 (2.24-3.94) for lung). (4) Conclusions: Rates of HAP during admission for solid organ transplant differ depending on the type of transplant. Although IHM during admission for solid organ transplant has decreased over time in our country, HAP persists and is associated with a higher IHM after accounting for potential confounding variables.

(1) Background: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) comprises a group of rare skin diseases. We assessed diagnostic procedures, comorbidity profiles, length of hospital stay (LOHS), costs, and in-hospital mortality (IHM) associated with EB. (2) Methods: A retrospective, population-based observational study was performed using the Spanish National Hospital Discharge Database. Hospitalized patients with EB in Spain were identified for the period 2016 to 2021. (3) Results: A total of 677 hospitalizations were identified among 342 patients with a diagnosis of EB. Fifty percent of patients had at least one readmission during the 6-year follow-up. Notably, rehospitalizations were more common among patients aged 2-17 years. The most prevalent comorbidity was digestive disorders, which were associated with the frequency of esophageal dilatation procedures and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. The longest LOHS was recorded for the 0- to 1-year age group. IHM increased with age, and the difference was statistically significant. The prevalence of malignant neoplasm was 36.88%, with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma being the most frequent. The overall cost per hospitalized patient was estimated to be EUR 10,895.22 (SD EUR 13,394.81), with significant variations between age groups. (4) Conclusions: Readmissions are very frequent among people with EB. We observed a higher LOHS in the 0- to 1-year age group, while the highest rates of IHM were observed in patients older than 50 years. There was a substantial prevalence of comorbidities, namely, digestive disorders, infectious diseases, and especially cancer.
