RESUMO

Lymphedema is one of many arm problems reported by breast cancer survivors. Understanding the impact of lymphedema on quality of life requires consideration that arm symptoms may occur with or without lymphedema. It was hypothesized that specific arm symptoms and pain, related or unrelated to lymphedema, would be more associated with quality of life outcomes than arm swelling. The relation of arm swelling and of arm symptoms and associated severity with a range of quality of life outcomes following breast cancer treatment was assessed in a diverse sample of 295 women, 141 of whom had a clinical diagnosis of lymphedema. Arm swelling (as defined by interlimb volume or circumference differences) and lymphedema severity (defined by Common Toxicity Criteria) were less correlated with quality of life than total number of arm symptoms and specific individual symptoms. Pain in the affected arm correlated with poor quality of life outcomes, regardless of arm swelling. When evaluating the impact of lymphedema on quality of life, arm swelling may not be as important as the total number and specific types of arm symptoms present, as these may be more informative about quality of life outcomes in survivors of breast cancer with and without lymphedema.

RESUMO

Nb K-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectra from a single lithium niobate (LN) crystal irradiated with high-energy (3)He ions of 41 MeV and from unexposed crystal as the reference material are compared. The differences in the x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra are interpreted by simulating Nb K-edge XANES spectra with the FEFF8.2 code. It is found that displacements of Nb and Li atoms, as well as Li and O vacancies, are likely to cause structural disorder leading to change in the refractive index of LN and to diminished birefringence. This finding is in agreement with previous results obtained from SRIM-2003 simulations and transmission electron microscopy measurements.

RESUMO

This work presents conclusive evidence that connecting Pt and Co nanoparticles stabilized by an aluminum-organic shell with molecular spacers interacting with this shell can induce notable changes in the electronic structure of the metal. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements at the Al K-, the Pt L(III)-, and the Co K-edge provide consistent evidence for this effect. The changes induced by cross-linking with an acidic spacer are discussed in detail as an example to elucidate the mechanism of this effect. It turns out that a reconfiguration of the protection shell that occurs upon networking is responsible for the observed changes.

RESUMO

In situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) investigations were carried out at chlorine K edge and palladium L3 edge to study the mechanism of the thermal decomposition of ammonium hexachloropalladate. The spectra show a characteristic feature for the initial step that might be explained as the formation of the precursor via ligand exchange (Cl --> NH3). Multiple scattering calculations (Feff 8) for the Cl K, Pd and Rh L3 edges were successful in simulating the XANES spectra of the precursor as well as the reference compounds (NH4)2 [PdCl4] and (NH4)3[RhCl6].

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Aptiganel (CNS 1102) is a selective, noncompetitive antagonist that acts on the ion channel associated with the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and is neuroprotective in experimental focal cerebral ischemia models at a plasma concentration of 10 ng/mL. In human volunteers, dose-limiting effects of aptiganel are blood pressure increases and central nervous system (CNS) excitation or depression. This study assessed the safety and tolerability of non-weight-adjusted doses of aptiganel in patients with acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: This was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled multicenter study in patients presenting within 24 hours of acute ischemic stroke. Ascending single intravenous bolus doses of aptiganel (3, 4.5, 6, and 7.5 mg) were assessed in 21 patients with a 3:1 active drug:placebo randomization schedule. In 15 subsequent patients, selected bolus doses were followed by constant intravenous infusion for 6 to 12 hours (6 mg plus 1 mg/h, n=10; then 4.5 mg plus 0.75 mg/h, n=15) in a 4:1 randomization schedule. Prospectively collected pharmacokinetic data guided selection of infusion rates. Neurological and functional status were recorded at entry and after 1 week, although the study was not designed to test efficacy. RESULTS: Forty-six patients were randomized from 4 centers (3 in the United States and 1 in the United Kingdom): 36 received aptiganel HCl, and 10 were given placebo. Hypertension and CNS events were commonly reported after a bolus dose of 7.5 mg and after a 6-mg bolus followed by an infusion of 1 mg/h. The lower regimen of 4.5-mg bolus followed by infusion of 0.75 mg/h achieved plasma aptiganel concentrations of >10 ng/mL and was well tolerated by patients but still raised systolic blood pressure by approximately 30 mm Hg over baseline. CONCLUSIONS: A 4.5-mg intravenous bolus of aptiganel HCl followed by infusion of 0.75 mg/h for 12 hours is a tolerable dose that can produce plasma drug concentrations shown to be neuroprotective in animal models. However, increases in systolic blood pressure and an excess of CNS effects were both observed at this dose.

RESUMO

During the oxidation of sulfide and thiosulfate purple and green sulfur bacteria accumulate globules of 'elemental' sulfur. Although essential for a thorough understanding of sulfur metabolism in these organisms, the exact chemical nature of the stored sulfur is still unclear. We applied sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) to probe the forms of sulfur in intact cells. Comparing XANES spectra of Allochromatium vinosum, Thiocapsa roseopersicina, Marichromatium purpuratum, Halorhodospira halophila and Chlorobium vibrioforme grown photolithoautotrophically on sulfide with reference probes (fingerprint method), we found sulfur chains with the structure R-S(n)-R. Evidence for the presence of sulfur rings, polythionates and anionic polysulfides in the sulfur globules of these bacteria was not obtained.

RESUMO

Transition metal colloids are potential precursors of heterogeneous catalysts with application to selective chemical reactions. Sample preparation techniques are described. Experimental details are given of the characterization of these often air-sensitive particles by X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. First results obtained with both techniques for a Rh-colloid show that the metal is mainly present in the zerovalent chemical state. But the spectra indicate further chemical states of Rh which can be assigned to the outermost metal atoms of the colloid interacting with organic ligands or to the educt Rh-halides.
