RESUMO

Light propagation wavefront and photon composition variations occur when the beam encounters acoustic waves, bringing mechanical and chemical inhomogeneity-induced light-intensity modulation, while phase variations, which carry more information about the acoustic-optical coupling in the medium, are often overlooked. This paper investigates the coupling of the light beam with the propagating ultrasound and the polarization aberration of the optical wave induced by the ultrasound. A model was developed to express the variation of the ultrasound-induced polarization aberration (UIPA). The ultrasound-induced refractive index variation of the sample was observed in both the simulation and experiments. The phase differences in various ultrasound states (valley dominant state, peak dominant state) are characterized in detail. The UIPA expressed in the phase space provides a way to quantify multidimensional polarization information of the ultrasound-tagged optical waves and allows refraction-sensitive polarization parametric imaging, which may be exploited for directional high-contrast photoacoustic imaging with ultrasound tagging.

RESUMO

The poisoning of catalysts has always been a vital issue in catalytic reactions. In this study, direct observation of the interaction of CO and oxygen-poisoned Co(0001) has been achieved with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and density functional theory calculation. A two-stage adsorption process of CO on a well-prepared p(2×2)-O layer covered Co(0001) was directly visualized. With increasing annealing time at a certain temperature after the CO dosage, the ordered (2 × 2) pattern formed in the first stage can be recovered, suggesting the weak interaction of CO with the O-covered Co(0001) surface in the latter stage. Compared to the clean Co(0001) surface, on an oxygen-poisoned surface, no further reaction was observed, illustrating the poisoning of the catalyst. Moreover, TPD results are in good agreement with the STM observation; a desorption energy of 0.35 eV is evaluated with a simple but accurate scheme.

RESUMO

Most photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) systems usually ignore the anisotropy of the tissue absorption coefficient, which will lead to the lack of information in reconstructed images. In this work, the effect is addressed of the possible optical absorption anisotropy of tissue on PACT images. The functional relationship is derived between the photoacoustic response and the polarization angle of the excitation light. An adaptive polarized light photoacoustic imaging (AP-PACT) approach is proposed and shown to make up for the lack of imaging information and achieve optimal image contrast when imaging samples with anisotropic optical absorption, by utilizing the standard deviation of photoacoustic response as the feedback signal in an adaptive data acquisition process. The method is implemented both on phantom and in vitro experiments, which show that AP-PACT can recover anisotropic absorption-related information from reconstructed images and thus significantly improve their quality.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Exploring the status and related factors of postoperative recurrence of ovarian endometriosis. METHODS: This study analyzed the results of questionnaires conducted in 27 hospitals across the country from January 2019 to November 2021. All women were divided into recurrence group and non-recurrence group to analyze the recurrence rate and related factors after ovarian endometriosis surgery. RESULTS: The recurrence rates of ovarian endometriosis within 1 year, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, 3-4 years, 4-5 years and more than 5 years were 6.27%, 35.85%, 55.38%, 65.00% and 56.82%, respectively. Significant differences were found between two groups in terms of age at surgery (OR: 0.342, 95%CI: 0.244-0.481, P < 0.001), presence of dysmenorrhea (OR: 1.758, 95%CI: 1.337-2.312, P < 0.001), presence of adenomyosis (OR: 1.948, 95%CI: 1.417-2.678, P < 0.001) and family history of endometriosis or adenomyosis (OR: 1.678, 95%CI: 1.035-2.721, P = 0.021). The age at surgery (OR: 0.358, 95%CI: 0.253-0.506, P < 0.001), presence of dysmenorrhea (OR: 1.379, 95%CI: 1.026-1.853, P = 0.033) and presence of adenomyosis (OR: 1.799, 95%CI: 1.275-2.537, P = 0.001) were significantly associated with endometrioma recurrence in multivariate analysis. No significant associations were found between the recurrence rate and body mass index (BMI), educational background, age of menarche, gravida, parity, uterine leiomyoma, endometrial polyps or postoperative use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH-a). CONCLUSIONS: Dysmenorrhea and presence of adenomyosis are independent risk factors for postoperative recurrence of ovarian endometriosis, and older age is an independent protective factor for postoperative recurrence.

RESUMO

In biomedical imaging, photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) has recently gained increased interest as this imaging technique has good optical contrast and depth of acoustic penetration. However, a spinning blur will be introduced during the image reconstruction process due to the limited size of the ultrasonic transducers (UT) and a discontinuous measurement process. In this study, a damping UT and adaptive back-projection co-optimization (CODA) method is developed to improve the lateral spatial resolution of PACT. In our PACT system, a damping aperture UT controls the size of the receiving area, which suppresses image blur at the signal acquisition stage. Then, an innovative adaptive back-projection algorithm is developed, which corrects the undesirable artifacts. The proposed method was evaluated using agar phantom and ex-vivo experiments. The results show that the CODA method can effectively compensate for the spinning blur and eliminate unwanted artifacts in PACT. The proposed method can significantly improve the lateral spatial resolution and image quality of reconstructed images, making it more appealing for wider clinical applications of PACT as a novel, cost-effective modality.

RESUMO

With the development of industry and the rapid growth of population, the current water treatment technologies face many challenges. Hydrodynamic cavitation as a green and efficient means of water treatment has attracted much attention. During the hydrodynamic cavitation, enormous energy could be released into the surrounding liquid which causes thermal effects (local hotspots with 4600 K), mechanical effects (pressures of 1500 bar) and chemical effects (hydroxyl radicals). These conditions can degrade bacteria and organic substance in sewage. Moreover, the combination of hydrodynamic cavitation and other water treatment methods can produce a coupling effect. In this review, we summarize the methods of hydrodynamic cavitation and the performance of water treatment for different types of sewage. The application of hydrodynamic cavitation reactors with different structures in water treatment are also evaluated and discussed. The design and optimization of high-performance hydrodynamic cavitation reactor are the most crucial issues for the application of hydrodynamic cavitation in water treatment. Finally, recommendations are provided for the future progress of hydrodynamic cavitation for water treatment.

RESUMO

Oxygen dissociation and activation on surfaces play a crucial role in heterogeneous catalysis and oxidation processes. In this study, we have conducted a series of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments combined with density functional theory calculation to investigate the oxidation process in a single crystal Co(0001) surface. For the first time, we show a comprehensive in situ STM study of the oxidation process of Co(0001) from an atomic point of view. With low O2 exposure at 90 K, chemisorbed oxygen pairs are observed showing a dumbbell-like STM feature. At a relatively higher temperature range of 160-250 K, a large-scale p(2 × 2)-O adlayer forms and the O adatoms show surprisingly high mobility. With the temperature of Co(0001) kept at ≥300 K, adsorption of oxygen leads to fast oxidation of the surface to amorphous cotton-like protrusions, which occur initially at the step/edge sites and interstitial defect sites.

RESUMO

Hydrodynamic cavitation was widely used in sterilization, emulsion preparation and other industrial fields. Cavitation intensity is the key performance index of hydrodynamic cavitation reactor. In this study, a novel rotor-radial groove (RRG) hydrodynamic cavitation reactor was proposed with good cavitation intensity and energy utilization. The cavitation performances of RRG hydrodynamic cavitation reactor was analyzed by utilizing computational fluid dynamics method. The cavitation intensity and the cavitation energy efficiency were used as evaluation indicators for RRG hydrodynamic cavitation reactor with different internal structures. The amount of generated cavitation for various shapes of the CGU, interaction distances and rotor speed were analyzed. The evolution cycle of cavitation morphology is periodicity (0.46 ms) in the CGU of RRG hydrodynamic cavitation reactor. The main cavitation regions of CGU were the outflow and inflow separation zones. The cavitation performance of rectangular-shaped CGU was better than the cylindrical-shaped CGU. In addition, the cavitation performance could be improved more effectively by increasing the rotor speed and decreasing the interaction distance. The research results could provide theoretical support for the research of cavitation mechanism of cavitation equipment.

RESUMO

Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent condition that causes dysmenorrhea and pelvic pain. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been used for endometriosis for many years in Asian populations. This is a retrospective study in a territory teaching hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing, China to compare the short- and long-term effectiveness and safety of CHM for endometriosis associated pain (EAP) before and after CHM treatment. A total of 338 out of 1143 women confirmed with endometriosis by ultrasonogram or surgery within three months received a CHM decoction twice a day for at least 3 and up to 24 months. All data were collected by a Structured Medical Records of Endometriosis (SMRE) in every clinic visit covering the whole treatment period. Pain score, evaluated by Numeric Rating Scale, was significantly decreased from 3rd to 12th month in women with moderate or severe pain. Frequency and severity rating of menstrual symptoms, evaluated by Cox Menstrual Symptom Scale, were significantly decreased in women with any pain level. Psychological changes rated by Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) were significantly lower in 3, 6, 12, and 24 months of treatment, but those by Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) was significantly decreased in six months of treatment. There was no severe adverse event but only minor side-effects. In conclusion, our study showed that CHM relieved EAP and related symptoms with minimal side-effects after treatment. A large-scale randomized and placebo-controlled trial could be designed to confirm the efficacy and safety.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of fetal cardiac structural abnormalities with chromosomal aneuploidies and copy number variations (CNVs) in amniocytes. METHODS: 328 pregnant women were subjected to fetal ultrasonography and chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA). Based on the fetal heart structure, the subjects were divided into normal (n=273) and abnormal groups (n=55). The detection rates of chromosomal aneuploidies and CNVs were compared between the two groups. Spearman method was used to assess the association between the results and fetal cardiac structural abnormalities. RESULTS: The detection rates for chromosomal aneuploidies and CNVs in the abnormal group were significantly higher than that in the normal group (P< 0.05), and the incidence of fetal cardiac structural abnormalities was strongly associated with chromosomal aneuploidies and CNVs (P< 0.05). CONCLUSION: Fetal chromosomal aneuploidies and CNVs are strongly associated with cardiac structural abnormalities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most common type of ovarian tumor, however, effective treatment does not currently exist for this condition. This study evaluated the role of vitexin in mitigating EOC both in vitro and in vivo. METHOD: SKOV-3 cells were used for in vitro experimentation. Xenotransplantation mouse models were set up by subcutaneously injecting mice with SKOV-3 cells. CCK8 was used to screen the optimal dose in vitro. Cell proliferation, invasion, number of microtubule nodules and apoptosis were respectively detected by colony formation assay, transwell assay, microtubule formation assay and flow cytometry. TUNEL and immunohistochemistry were used to detect tissues apoptosis and VEGF content. Western blot assay was used to detect the expression of Ki67, caspase-3, VEGFA, VEGFR2, ERK1/2 and p38. RESULTS: In vitro experiment, compared with the control group, 10 µL of vitexin significantly reduced Ki67 levels and enhanced tumor cell apoptosis rate. Additionally, the colony forming rate, invasive cells per field, and number of nodes/HPF in vitexin treated group decreased dramatically. The result of western blot showed that levels of p-p38/p38 and p-ERK1/2/ERK1/2 also noticeably decreased. In vivo experiment, 40 mg/kg of vitexin significantly inhibited tumor growth. In addition, vitexin significantly enhanced the percentage of tissues apoptosis, which was accompanied by a decrease in the percentage of VEGF-positive cells. CONCLUSIONS: Vitexin decreased the proliferation and invasion of SKOV-3 cells and noticeably reduced tumor growth. These findings suggest that vitexin could be a promising therapy for EOC.

RESUMO

A stroboscopic method based on polarization selective imaging is proposed for dynamic visualization of ultrasonic waves propagating in a transparent medium. Multiple independent polarization parametric images were obtained, which enabled quantitative evaluation of the distribution of the ultrasonic pressure in quartz. In addition to the detection of optical phase differences δ in conventional photo-elastic techniques, the azimuthal angle φ and the Stokes parameter S2 of the polarized light are found to be highly sensitive to the wave-induced refraction index distribution, opening a new window on ultrasonic field visualization.

RESUMO

MicroRNA serve crucial roles in a variety of human cancer types. The miR-302-367 cluster has been reported to suppress the proliferation of cervical carcinoma cells through the novel target AKT1; however, the molecular mechanism of miR-302 in cervical cancer metastasis remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of miR-302-3p expression in cervical cancer, and to examine the regulatory mechanism of miR-302-3p in the malignant phenotypes of cervical cancer cells. The present data indicated that miR-302-3p was significantly downregulated in cervical cancer tissues compared with the level in adjacent non-tumor tissues, and low expression of miR-302-3p was significantly associated with node metastasis, advanced clinical stage, and poor prognosis in patients with cervical cancer. Restoration of miR-302-3p expression caused a significant reduction in cervical cancer cell migration and invasion. Defective in cullin neddylation 1 domain containing 1 (DCUN1D1) was identified as a novel target gene of miR-302-3p, and miR-302-3p negatively regulated the mRNA and protein expression of DCUN1D1 in cervical cancer HeLa cells. Additionally, overexpression of DCUN1D1 rescued the effects of miR-302-3p on the migration and invasion of cervical cancer cells. Furthermore, DCUN1D1 was upregulated in cervical cancer tissues compared with the levels in adjacent tissues, and its high expression was associated with node metastasis, advanced clinical stage, and shorter survival time in patients with cervical cancer. Notably, a negative correlation between miR-302-3p and DCUN1D1 expression in cervical cancer tissues was observed. Taken together, the present study suggests that miR-302-3p serves a suppressive role in cervical cancer metastasis, partly at least, via directly targeting DCUN1D1. Therefore, miR-302-3p/DCUN1D1 may be a potential therapeutic target for cervical cancer treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to prospectively investigate whether uterine leiomyoma greater than 10 cm in diameter could be treated with simple ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (USgHIFU) in one-time treatment. METHODS: A total of 36 patients with 36 symptomatic uterine leiomyoma greater than 10 cm in diameter who underwent simple USgHIFU treatment alone were analysed. Enhanced MRI was performed before and after HIFU treatment, and all patients had follow-up for 6 months after treatment. Symptom severity scores, treatment time, treatment speed, ablation rate, energy effect ratio, uterine leiomyoma regression rate, adverse events, liver and kidney functions, coagulation function and routine blood count were included in the study endpoints. RESULTS: The mean diameter of uterine leiomyoma was 11.2 ± 1.3 cm (10.0-14.3 cm). The median treatment time and treatment speed were 104.0 min (90.0-140.0 min) and 118.8 cm3 h-1 (86.2-247.1 cm3 h-1), respectively. The ablation rate of uterine leiomyoma was 71.9 ± 20.4% (32.1-100.0%), and the regression rate of uterine leiomyoma was 40.8 ± 7.5% (25.6-59.9%) at 6 months after treatment. The mean symptom severity scores decreased by an average of approximately 8.6 ± 2.3 (5-14) points. There were no significant changes in haemogram and blood chemical indexes of patients, except for the transient elevation of aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin and white blood cells after treatment. No serious adverse reactions occurred. CONCLUSION: According to our preliminary results, simple USgHIFU is a safe and effective single-treatment method of treating uterine leiomyoma greater than 10 cm in diameter and is an almost innocuous alternative therapeutic strategy. Advances in knowledge: The conclusions indicate simple USgHIFU is safe and effective as one-time treatment of uterine leiomyoma greater than 10 cm in diameter, it could be a promising therapeutic strategy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficiency of ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (USgHIFU) combined with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa)-ablating symptomatic uterine leiomyoma with homogeneous hyperintensity on T2 weighted MRI prospectively. METHODS: A total of 34 patients with 42 symptomatic uterine leiomyomas with homogeneous hyperintensity on T2 weighted MRI were enrolled in our study. In the patient who had multiple uterine leiomyomas, only one dominant leiomyoma was treated. According to the principles of voluntariness, 18 patients underwent a 3-month therapy of GnRHa (once a month) before the high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment, while 16 patients received only HIFU treatment. Enhanced MRI was performed before and after GnRHa and HIFU treatment. Evaluation of the main indicators included treatment time, sonication time, treatment efficiency, non-perfused volume (NPV) (indicative of successful ablation) ratio and energy effect ratio; adverse events were also recorded. RESULTS: The treatment time and sonication time of the combination group were 102.0 min (55.8-152.2 min) and 25.4 min (12.2-34.1 min); however, they were 149.0 min (87.0-210.0 min) and 38.9 min (14.0-46.7 min) in the simple USgHIFU group. The treatment and sonication time for the combination group was significantly shorter than that for the simple USgHIFU group. Treatment efficiency, NPV ratio and energy effect ratio were 46.7 mm3 s-1 (28.5-95.8 mm3 s-1), 69.2 ± 29.8% (35.5-97.4%) and 9.9 KJ mm-3 (4.5-15.7 KJ mm-3) in the combination group, respectively; but, the lowest treatment efficiency, lowest NPV ratio and more energy effect ratio were observed in the simple HIFU group, which were 16.8 mm3 s-1 (8.9-32.9 mm3 s-1), 50.2 ± 27.3% (0-78.6%) and 23.8 KJ mm-3 (12.4-46.2 KJ mm-3), respectively. Pain scores in the combination group were 3.0 ± 0.5 points (2-4 points)-significantly less than the simple USgHIFU group. There were no significant adverse reactions in either group. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that USgHIFU combined with GnRHa may be performed to ablate symptomatic uterine leiomyoma with homogeneous hyperintensity on T2 weighted MRI. Advances in knowledge: The conclusions indicate that GnRHa can improve the effectiveness of the USgHIFU treatment of a homogeneous hyperintense leiomyoma on T2 weighted MRI, and combination treatment could be a promising alternative treatment for the uterine leiomyoma.

RESUMO

The particle fabrication technique was used to fabricate monodisperse size and shape specific poly (lactide-co-glycolide) particles loaded with the silybin. Response surface methodology (RSM) using the central composite rotatable design (CCRD) model was used to optimize formulations of silybin nanoparticles. Further the optimized nanoparticles are characterized for particle size, zeta potential, surface morphology, entrapment efficiency, in-vitro drug release, silybin availability for tumor, plasma, lung, spleen, liver were determined. The significant findings were the optimal formulation of PLGA concentration 10 mg, PVA concentration 2000 and PET width of 6 gave rise to the EE of 88%, mean diameter of 223 nm and zeta potential of 25-mV. Release studies were investigated at pH 1.2 and pH 6.8. It was studied that lower the pH, faster the release of sylibin. The nanoparticles had~15-fold higher plasma exposure as measured by AUC contrasted to pure silybin. The nanoparticles had a 60% increase altogether tumor silybin presentation contrasted with pure silybin. Nanoparticles had higher silybin presentation in the spleen and liver contrasted with pure silybin suspension as expected for a nanoparticle formulation. The lung silybin presentation for the nanoparticle was additionally 2-fold higher than that of the pure silybin suspension. The results of pharmacokinetic parameters and oral bioavailability data exhibited that drug-nanoparticle complex could enhance the oral absorption of silybin and as well as the use of particles with smaller feature size may be preferred to decrease clearance by organs of the mononuclear phagocyte system.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to assess, for the first time, the validity, reliability, and acceptability of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life questionnaire (QLQ) cervical cancer module (CX24) in Chinese cervical cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred fifteen outpatients with cervical cancer in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University from May 2013 to July 2013 were included in this study. All participants self-administered the EORTC QLQ-CX24 and the core questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), and the Karnofsky Performance Scale was performed to evaluate scores. Data were analyzed with Cronbach's α coefficient, Pearson correlation test, multitrait scaling analysis, and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: Scale reliability was confirmed by Cronbach's α coefficients for internal consistency, which ranged from 0.71 to 0.82. Convergent and discriminant validity were confirmed by multitrait scaling analysis, which revealed three (3.4%) scaling errors for symptom experience scales and zero (0%) for body image as well as sexual/vaginal functioning scales. Higher missing value rate occurred in sexuality-related items. The clinical validity of the Chinese version of the EORTC QLQ-CX24 was demonstrated by the ability to discriminate among patients in different International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stages. CONCLUSION: The EORTC QLQ-CX24 was proved to be a reliable and valid instrument with which to measure the quality of life in cervical cancer patients in the People's Republic of China.
