RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To explore the diagnostic value of high-resolution ultrasound combined with multi-slice computer tomography (MSCT) for pediatric intra-abdominal hernias (IAHs), and to analyze the potential causes for missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis of IAHs in children. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 45 children with surgically confirmed IAHs. The diagnostic rate of IAHs by preoperative high-resolution ultrasound combined with MSCT was compared with that of intraoperative examination, and the potential causes for missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis by the combination method were analyzed. RESULTS: Forty-five cases of pediatric IAHs were categorized into primary (25/45, 55.5%) and acquired secondary hernias (20/45, 44.5%). Among children with primary hernias, mesenteric defects were identified as the predominant subtype (40%). Acquired secondary hernias typically resulted from abnormal openings in the abdominal wall or band adhesions due to trauma, surgery, or inflammation. In particular, adhesive band hernias were the major type in children with acquired secondary hernias (40%). The diagnostic rate of high-resolution ultrasound was 77.8%, with "cross sign" as a characteristic ultrasonic feature. Among 10 cases of missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis, 5 were finally diagnosed as IAHs by multi-slice computer tomography (MSCT). Overall, the diagnostic rate of pediatric IAHs by preoperative ultrasound combined with radiological imaging reached 88.9%. DISCUSSION: IAHs in children, particularly mesenteric defects, are prone to strangulated intestinal obstruction and necrosis. High-resolution ultrasound combined with MSCT greatly enhances the diagnostic accuracy of pediatric IAHs.

RESUMO

Objective: Childhood obesity has become a prominent issue in the society, which can lead to left ventricular remodeling and severe cardiovascular complications in adulthood. It is beneficial to identify the causes of left ventricular remodeling so that targeted measures can be taken to prevent the cardiovascular disease. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the relationship between left ventricular remodeling and changes in blood lipid indexes in obese children. Methods: This study was conducted on 40 healthy non-obese children and 140 obese children diagnosed in the pediatric health department of our hospital. Clinical data collected from the two groups were compared. Echocardiography was performed to examine left ventricular configuration and cardiac function. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the independent effects of blood lipid levels on echocardiographic parameters. Blood lipid indicators among different left ventricular structural patterns which were classified according to left ventricular mass indexes and relative wall thickness were compared. Results: Obese children exhibited significantly increased height, weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), blood pressure, triglycerides, total cholesterol, left ventricular internal diameter (LVIDd), interventricular septum (IVSd), left ventricular posterior wall diastolic thickness (LVPWd), myocardial mass (LVM) and relative wall thickness (RWT), as well as lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) compared to the non-obese children (P < 0.05). Multiple linear correlation analysis showed LVM had a significantly positive correlation with BMI (r = 3.21, P = 0.002) and SBP (r = 2.61, P = 0.01); LVMI had a significantly negative correlation with HDL-C (r = -2.45, P = 0.015); RWT had a significantly positive correlation with SBP (r = 2.50, P = 0.013) but a significantly negative correlation with HDL-C (r = -2.35, P = 0.02). Furthermore, there were significant differences in HDL-C values among children with different ventricular configurations (P < 0.05), with the lowest HDL-C value recorded in the concentric hypertrophy group. Conclusion: Obese children will develop left ventricular remodeling. The left ventricular configuration indexes are most significantly associated with serum HDL-C. Lower HDL-C level contributes to severer left ventricular hypertrophy, indicating a concentric hypertrophy pattern.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Paraovarian cysts in children and adolescents can be challenging to accurately diagnose prior to surgery. Our objective is to outline the clinical characteristics of paraovarian cysts and enhance the precision of diagnosing paraovarian cysts in this age group. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed all patients with paraovarian cysts who underwent surgery in our department from 2013 to 2021. The review focused on demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, intraoperative findings, and postoperative pathology of these patients. RESULTS: This cohort was composed of 38 children with paraovarian cysts. The average diameter of the cysts was 4.8 cm (range 0.5-10 cm). Among the cases, 25 (65.8%) had adnexal torsion. Postoperative pathology showed that all cases were simple cysts with serous fluid. After the procedure, the patients were monitored for a period ranging from 12 to 108 months. B-ultrasound and physical examination did not reveal any significant abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS: B-ultrasound can help diagnose paraovarian cysts by detecting slight deviation movement between the cyst and the uterus. The presence of adnexa torsion in children and adolescents with paraovarian cysts does not depend on BMI, but rather on the size of cysts. Laparoscopic cyst removal has proven to be an effective surgical approach with favorable outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We intended to explore the potential immunological functions and prognostic value of Myeloid Ecotropic Viral Integration Site 1 (MEIS1) across 33 cancer types. METHODS: The data were acquired from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) and Gene expression omnibus (GEO) datasets. Bioinformatics was used to excavate the potential mechanisms of MEIS1 across different cancers. RESULTS: MEIS1 was downregulated in most tumors, and it was linked to the immune infiltration level of cancer patients. MEIS1 expression was different in various immune subtypes including C2 (IFN-gamma dominant), C5 (immunologically quiet), C3 (inflammatory), C4 (lymphocyte depleted), C6 (TGF-b dominant) and C1 (wound healing) in various cancers. MEIS1 expression was correlated with Macrophages_M2, CD8+T cells, Macrophages_M1, Macrophages_M0 and neutrophils in many cancers. MEIS1 expression was negatively related to tumor mutational burden (TMB), microsatellite instability (MSI) and neoantigen (NEO) in several cancers. Low MEIS1 expression predicts poor overall survival (OS) in adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC), and kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) patients, while high MEIS1 expression predicts poor OS in colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) and low grade glioma (LGG) patients. CONCLUSION: Our findings revealed that MEIS1 is likely to be a potential new target for immuno-oncology.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of an R-wave modified tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) myocardial performance index (MPI), or MPI TDI-R, for the assessment of cardiac function in children with congestive heart failure (CHF). MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty children with CHF and 40 normal children were evaluated using the modified pediatric Ross heart failure grading system. TDI recorded the spectrum of diastolic function at the mitral valve annulus to measure the MPI. Twelve-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) measured the R-wave in the QRS complex, resulting in the modified MPI TDI-R. Correlation between the MPI TDI-R, other echocardiographic indices, and the Ross heart failure grades were analyzed, with reproducibility analysis. RESULTS Compared with normal children, the MPI TDI and MPI TDI-R were significantly increased in the pediatric CHF group (P<0.01). The MPI TDI-R was significantly correlated with other indices of cardiac function and Ross grading for CHF in children (r=0.769). The MPI TDI-R showed good correlation with the findings of the MPI TDI, calculated by traditional methods. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the MPI TDI-R had a sensitivity of 67.5%, and a specificity of 97.5%. The reproducibility of the MPI TDI-R was confirmed to be superior when compared with the non-modified MPI TDI. CONCLUSIONS This feasibility study showed that the modified MPI TDI-R, formed by combining the MPI TDI with synchronous surface ECG measurements, was simple to perform, reproducible, and provided a specific index for the assessment of cardiac function in children with CHF.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cross breeding is the most commonly used method in chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) breeding; however, cross barriers always exist in these combinations. Many studies have shown that paternal chromosome doubling can often overcome hybridization barriers during cross breeding, although the underlying mechanism has seldom been investigated. RESULTS: In this study, we performed two crosses: C. morifolium (pollen receptor) × diploid C. nankingense (pollen donor) and C. morifolium × tetraploid C. nankingense. Seeds were obtained only from the latter cross. RNA-Seq and isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) were used to investigate differentially expressed genes and proteins during key embryo development stages in the latter cross. A previously performed cross, C. morifolium × diploid C. nankingense, was compared to our results and revealed that transcription factors (i.e., the agamous-like MADS-box protein AGL80 and the leucine-rich repeat receptor protein kinase EXS), hormone-responsive genes (auxin-binding protein 1), genes and proteins related to metabolism (ATP-citrate synthase, citrate synthase and malate dehydrogenase) and other genes reported to contribute to embryo development (i.e., LEA, elongation factor and tubulin) had higher expression levels in the C. morifolium × tetraploid C. nankingense cross. In contrast, genes related to senescence and cell death were down-regulated in the C. morifolium × tetraploid C. nankingense cross. CONCLUSIONS: The data resources helped elucidate the gene and protein expression profiles and identify functional genes during different development stages. When the chromosomes from the male parent are doubled, the genes contributing to normal embryo developmentare more abundant. However, genes with negative functions were suppressed, suggesting that chromosome doubling may epigenetically inhibit the expression of these genes and allow the embryo to develop normally.

RESUMO

Spray cut chrysanthemums ornamental value and vase life are rapidly reduced with an increase in the pollen dispersal of the middle tubular bisexual flowers, and excessive pollen grains floating in the air are usually harmful to people. Thus, two cultivars were selected: the dehiscent 'Qx-097' and the indehiscent 'Qx-007', to investigate the morphological, structural and physiological differences in anthers. (1) Prior to the opening of the tubular flower, the anther was completely dehisced, and the pollen grains of 'Qx-097' were then released. 'Qx-007' inflorescences showed no pollen dispersal, and this cultivar was therefore not contaminated by its own pollen grains during flowering. (2) The anther cell structure of 'Qx-007' was abnormal, such that the entire anther wall exhibited hypertrophy due to the non-selective thickening of the endothecium cell size in different areas. Moreover, cracks did not form in the 'Qx-007' anther due to failure of septum degradation and stomium breakage, which resulted in the anther locules being inwardly crushed. Besides, the indehiscent anther accompanies partial pollen abortion due to the impairment of tapetum development, this is not conducive to pollen dispersal. (3) The 'Qx-007' anther contained higher water levels compared with 'Qx-097', and the dehydration of the 'Qx-007' anther was relatively moderate. Furthermore, the 'Qx-007' anther exhibited higher Ca2+ and Mg2+ levels compared with 'Qx-097' during dehiscing periods. (4) The 'Qx-007' anther showed significantly lower jasmonic acid levels and higher indole-3-acetic acid levels compare with the 'Qx-097' anther. These results suggest that the endothecium, septum and stomium constituent of the anther structure exhibit developmental abnormalities, which likely serve as the cellular basis of anther indehiscence. In addition, anther dehydration, the enhancement of anther cell toughness due to a high level of ions, and JA (IAA) dysregulation may be the determining physiological factors of anther indehiscence.
