RESUMO

We present a scheme to generate nonlocal optical Kerr nonlinearity and polaritonic solitons via matter-wave superradiance in a Rydberg-dressed Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We show that the polariton spectrum of the scattered field generated by the superradiance is changed significantly due to the existence of the long-range Rydberg-Rydberg interaction between atoms, i.e. it has a roton-maxon form; moreover, the BEC structure factor displays a strong dependence on the Rydberg-dressing, which can be tuned in a controllable way. We also show that such a Rydberg-dressed BEC system can support a giant nonlocal optical Kerr nonlinearity, and hence allow the formation and stable propagation of polaritonic solitons, which have ultraslow propagation velocity and ultralow generation power. The results reported here are useful to understand the unique properties of Rydberg-dressing in BECs and have potential applications in optical information processing and transmission.

We investigate matter-wave solitons in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with spin-orbit (SO) coupling, loaded in a one-dimensional (1D) deep optical lattice and a three-dimensional anisotropic magnetic trap, which creates an array of elongated sub-BECs with transverse tunneling. We show that the system supports 1D continuous and discrete solitons localized in the longitudinal (along the array) and the transverse (across the array) directions, respectively. In addition, such solitons are always unpolarized in the zero-momentum state but polarized in finite-momentum states. We also show that the system supports stable two-dimensional semidiscrete solitons, including single- and multiple-peaked ones, localized in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. Stability diagrams for single-peaked semidiscrete solitons in different parameter spaces are identified. The results reported here are beneficial not only for understanding the physical property of SO-coupled BECs but also for generating new types of matter-wave solitons.

Neuroinflammation plays an essential role in the process of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) injury repair. The current study seeks to investigate the relationship between the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and neutrophil/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHR) and AIS disease severity and short-term prognosis. As such, the primary aim of this study is to improve AIS diagnosis and treatment. A total of 136 patients with AIS at the Nantong Third People's Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. The inclusion criteria comprised patients with ischemic stroke admitted to the hospital <24 hours after symptom onset. Baseline, clinical, and laboratory data were collected from all patients within 24 hours of admission. Univariate, multivariate and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were performed to determine the relationship between NLR, NHR, AIS severity, and short-term prognosis. NLR (odds ratio [OR] = 1.448, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.116-1.878, P = .005) and NHR (OR = 1.480, 95% CI 1.158-1.892, P = .002) were identified as independent risk factors for stroke severity. Additionally, the correlation between combined NLR and NHR and AIS severity achieved a sensitivity of 81.4% and specificity of 60.4% with a best cutoff value of 6.989. This outcome was superior to that of the single composite inflammatory index. Moreover, NLR (OR = 1.252, 95% CI 1.008-1.554, P = .042) was an independent risk factor for poor short-term prognosis in patients with AIS. When the optimal cutoff value was 2.605, the sensitivity of NLR correlation with the short-term prognosis of AIS was 82.2%, and the specificity was 59.3%. NLR combined with NHR exhibits a strong correlation with disease severity in AIS. Meanwhile, an elevated NLR in patients with AIS can predict a poor short-term prognosis.

PURPOSE: This research aimed to explore the regulatory molecular mechanism among circular RNA (circ)_0011373, microRNA (miR)-1271, and lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6) in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). METHODS: Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) assay was adopted to measure the expression of circ_0011373, miR-1271, and LRP6 mRNA. Furthermore, cell cycle distribution, apoptosis, migration and invasion were investigated by flow cytometry and transwell assay, respectively. The target relationship between miR-1271 and circ_0011373 or LRP6 was predicted by using the Starbase website and DIANA TOOL and verified by dual-luciferase reporter and RIP assay. Protein expression levels of LRP6, p-mTOR, mTOR, p-AKT, AKT, p-PI3K, and PI3K were tested by Western blot. The function of circ_0011373 on PTC tumor growth was validated by the xenograft tumor model in vivo. RESULTS: Circ_0011373 and LRP6 were upregulated, while miR-1271 was downregulated in PTC tissues and cell lines. Moreover, knockdown of circ_0011373 inhibited cell cycle, migration, and invasion and promoted apoptosis. Of particular importance was the fact that circ_0011373 directly interacted with miR-1271 and miR-1271 inhibitor was able to reverse the effect of circ_0011373 knockdown on PTC cell progression. Meanwhile, LRP6 was directly targeted by miR-1271, and its expression was positively regulated by circ_0011373. We further confirmed that miR-1271 overexpression suppressed cell cycle, migration, and invasion and enhanced apoptosis by regulating LRP6. In addition, circ_0011373 knockdown restrained PTC tumor growth in vivo. CONCLUSION: Circ_0011373 might be able to regulate PTC cell cycle, migration, invasion, and apoptosis by regulating the miR-1271/LRP6 axis.

We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the nonlinear dynamics of (2+1)-dimensional [(2+1)D] matter waves excited in a disk-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) when quantum fluctuations described by the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction are taken into consideration. By using a method of multiple scales, we derive Davey-Stewartson I equations that govern the nonlinear evolution of matter-wave envelopes. We demonstrate that the system supports (2+1)D matter-wave dromions, which are superpositions of a short-wavelength excitation and a long-wavelength mean flow. We found that the stability of the matter-wave dromions can be enhanced by the LHY correction. We also found that such dromions display interesting behaviors of collision, reflection, and transmission when they interact with each other and are scattered by obstacles. The results reported here are useful not only for improving the understanding on the physical property of the quantum fluctuations in BECs, but also for possible experimental findings of new nonlinear localized excitations in systems with long-ranged interactions.

We propose a scheme for realizing the quantum reflection of single photons in a cold Rydberg atomic gas via electromagnetically induced transparency, by which a deep and tunable attractive potential can be prepared by using stored gate photons. Such a scheme is promising for designing dispersion-type single-photon switches, and may be taken as a quantum device for observing the wave and particle natures of photons simultaneously.

We show that stable (3+1)-dimensional vector light bullets with ultraslow propagating velocity and extreme low generation power can be realized in a cold Rydberg atomic gas. They can also be actively controlled by using a nonuniform magnetic field; especially, trajectories of their two polarization components can have significant Stern-Gerlach deflections. The results obtained are useful for revealing the nonlocal nonlinear optical property of Rydberg media and for measuring weak magnetic fields.

We show that periodic optical patterns formed in a cold Rydberg atomic gas via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be selected by using a weakly modulated control laser field. We also show that the (hexagonal, stripe, square, etc.) patterns prepared in one probe laser field can be cloned onto another one with high fidelity via a double EIT.

As an essential element for quantum information processing and quantum communication, efficient quantum memory based on solid-state platforms is imperative for practical applications but remains a challenge. Here we propose a scheme to realize a highly efficient and controllable storage and routing of single photons based on quantum dots (QDs) with a Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We show that the SOC in the QDs can provide a flexible built-up of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for single-photon propagation, and storage, retrieval, as well as routing of single-photon wavepackets can also be implemented through the EIT. Moreover, we demonstrate that the propagation loss of the single-photon wavepackets in the QDs may be largely suppressed by means of a weak microwave field, by which the storage and routing of the single photons can be made to have high efficiency and fidelity. Our research opens a route for designs of advanced solid-state devices promising for applications in photonic quantum-information processing and transmission based on the QDs with SOC.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies suggest that physical activity (PA) can independently modify the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the causal effect of PA on MS by Mendelian randomization (MR) approaches. METHODS: Through a genome-wide association study including 91,105 participants from UK Biobank, we obtained 5 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with accelerometer-measured PA (P < 5 × 10-8). Summary-level data for MS were obtained from a meta-analysis, incorporating 14,802 subjects with MS and 26,703 healthy controls of European ancestry. MR analyses were performed using the inverse-variance-weighted method, weighted median estimator, and MR-PRESSO method. Additional analyses were further performed using MR-Egger intercept and Cochran's Q statistic to verify the robustness of our findings. RESULTS: We failed to detect a causal effect of PA on MS (OR, 0.60; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.30-1.20; P = 0.15) per in the random-effects IVW analysis. Additional MR methods yielded consistent results. MR-Egger regression suggested no evidence of horizontal pleiotropy (Intercept = 0.14, P = 0.21) and there seemed no substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 29.8%, P = 0.22) among individual SNPs. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that enhancing PA might not modify the risk of developing MS independent of established risk factors.

RESUMO

We show that stable slow-light dark solitons with finite continuous-wave background can be generated in a Λ-type atomic system via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We also show that such dark solitons can be stored and retrieved with high efficiency and fidelity. Moreover, an optical routing of them can be realized via EIT in the system with a double-Λ-type level configuration.

Study Objectives: To clarify the effects of sleep duration on stroke and stroke subtypes, we adopted a Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to evaluate their causal relationship. Methods: A genome-wide association study including 446,118 participants from UK biobank was used to identify instruments for short sleep, long sleep and sleep duration. Summary-level data for all stroke, ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and their subtypes were obtained from meta-analyses conducted by the MEGASTROKE consortium. MR analyses were performed using the inverse-variance-weighted method, weighted median estimator, MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (MR-PRESSO) test, and MR-Egger regression. Sensitivity analyses were further performed using leave-one-out analysis, MR-PRESSO global test and Cochran's Q test to verify the robustness of our findings. Results: By two-sample MR, we didn't find causal associations between sleep duration and risk of stroke. However, in the subgroup analysis, we found weak evidence for short sleep in increasing risk of cardio-embolic stroke (odds ratio [OR], 1.33; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11-1.60; P = 0.02) and long sleep in increasing risk of large artery stroke [OR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.02-1.95; P = 0.04]. But the associations were not significant after Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. Conclusions: Our study suggests that sleep duration is not causally associated with risk of stroke and its subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Assessing the effectiveness and safety of plum-blossom needle for (COVID-19) related headache is the main purpose of this systematic review protocol. METHODS: We will search the following sources for the identification of trials: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technique Journals Database (VIP), and the Wanfang Database. The searches were limited to articles published in 2020, but no language restrictions were imposed. Only include randomised controlled trials (RCTs), with or without blinding, and participant or observer reported outcomes, will be included.The primary outcome is the time and rate of appearance of headache induced by COVID-19. The secondary outcome is the length of hospital stay. Two independent reviewers will conduct the study selection, data extraction and assessment. Review Manager Software V.5.3 will be used for the assessment of risk of bias and data synthesis. RESULTS: The results will provide a high-quality synthesis of current evidence for researchers in this subject area. CONCLUSION: The conclusion of our study will provide an evidence to judge whether plum-blossom needle is effective and safe for COVID-19-related headache. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This protocol will not evaluate individual patient information or affect patient rights and therefore does not require ethical approval. Results from this review will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals and conference reports. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42020199508.

We study dispersive optical nonlinearities of short pulses propagating in high number density, warm atomic vapors where the laser resonantly excites atoms to Rydberg P states via a single-photon transition. Three different regimes of the light-atom interaction, dominated by either Doppler broadening, Rydberg atom interactions, or decay due to thermal collisions between ground state and Rydberg atoms, are found. We show that using fast Rabi flopping and strong Rydberg atom interactions, both in the order of gigahertz, can overcome the Doppler effect as well as collisional decay, leading to a sizable dispersive optical nonlinearity on nanosecond timescales. In this regime, self-induced transparency (SIT) emerges when areas of the nanosecond pulse are determined primarily by the Rydberg atom interaction, rather than the area theorem of interaction-free SIT. We identify, both numerically and analytically, the condition to realize Rydberg SIT. Our study contributes to efforts in achieving quantum information processing using glass cell technologies.

PURPOSE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative movement disorder, but the pathogenesis remains elusive. This study was aimed to explore key genes and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) associated with PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three patients with PD and three normal controls were enrolled in the present study from July 12, 2017, to August 29, 2017. RNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis were performed to obtain differentially expressed micro RNAs (DEmRNAs) and lncRNAs (DElncRNAs) between patients with PD and normal controls. PD-specific protein-protein interaction networks were constructed. DEmRNAs transcribed within a 100 kb window upstream or downstream of DElncRNAs were searched, which were defined as cis nearby targeted DEmRNAs of DElncRNAs. Datasets GSE57475 and GSE68719 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, which were used to validate the expression of selected DEmRNAs. RESULTS: A total of 857 DEmRNAs and 77 DElncRNAs were obtained between PD and normal controls. Natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity was a significantly enriched pathway in PD. ERBB2, HSPB1, and MYC were three hub proteins of PD-specific protein-protein interaction network. LOC105378701-TAL1, LOC102724104-CX3CR1, LOC105375056-TREML1/TREML4, LOC105379392-ANK1, and LOC101928100-KLRK1/KLRD1 interactions were identified DElncRNA nearby targeted DEmRNA pairs in PD. Gene expression results validated by GSE57475 and GSE68719 were consistent with our RNA-sequencing results, generally. CONCLUSION: This present study identified key genes and lncRNAs associated with PD, which will provide new clues for exploring the pathogenesis and developing potential biomarkers of PD.

We investigate the formation and propagation of ultraslow weak-light solitons and their memory in the atomic gas filled in a kagome-structured hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that, due to the strong light-atom coupling contributed by the transverse confinement of the HC-PCF, the EIT and hence the optical Kerr nonlinearity of the system can be largely enhanced, and hence optical solitons with very short formation distance, ultraslow propagation velocity, and extremely low generation power can be realized. We also show that the optical solitons obtained can not only be robust during propagation, but also be stored and retrieved with high efficiency through the switching off and on of a control laser field. The results reported herein are promising for practical applications of all-optical information processing and transmission via the ultraslow weak-light solitons and the kagome-structured HC-PCF.

We consider an array of the meta-atom consisting of two cut-wires and a split-ring resonator coupled with an electromagnetic field with two polarization components. We show that the system can be taken as a classical analogue of the atomic medium of a double-Λ-type four-level configuration coupled with four laser fields and working under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency, exhibits an effect of plasmon induced transparency (PIT), and displays a similar behavior of atomic four-wave mixing (FWM). We show also that with the PIT and FWM effects the system can support vector plasmonic dromions when a nonlinear varactor is mounted onto the each gap of the split-ring resonator. Our work not only gives a plasmonic analogue of the FWM in coherent atomic systems but also provides the possibility for obtaining new type of plasmonic excitations in metamaterials.

We propose a scheme for generating and manipulating vector (or two-component) optical rogue waves using Akhmediev and Kuznetsov-Ma breathers in a coherent atomic system with an M-type five-level configuration via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that the propagation velocity of these nonlinear excitations can be reduced to 10-4c and their generation power can be lowered to microwatts. We also show that the motion trajectories of the two polarization components in these excitations can be deflected significantly by using a transversal gradient magnetic field, similar to the Stern-Gerlach effect of an atomic beam. We find that the deflection angle can reach to 10-4 radian within the propagation distance of only several centimeters; at variance with the atomic Stern-Gerlach effect, the deflection angle can be made different for different polarization components and may be actively adjusted in a controllable way. The results obtained may have promising applications, including the precise measurement of gradient magnetic fields.

We propose a scheme to realize the storage and retrieval of high-dimensional electromagnetic waves with orbital angular momentum (OAM) via plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in a metamaterial, which consists of an array of meta-atoms constructed by a metallic structure loaded with two varactors. We show that due to PIT effect the system allows the existence of shape-preserving dark-mode plasmonic polaritons, which are mixture of electromagnetic-wave modes and dark oscillatory modes of the meta-atoms and may carry various OAMs. We demonstrate that the slowdown, storage and retrieval of multi-mode electromagnetic waves with OAMs can be achieved through the active manipulation of a control field. Our work raises the possibility for realizing PIT-based spatial multi-mode memory of electromagnetic waves and is promising for practical application of information processing with large capacity by using room-temperature metamaterials.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate whether serum cystatin C levels are correlated with either stroke severity or with potential risk factors of acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: 171 patients with acute ischemic stroke and 99 control subjects with minor, unrelated diseases with stroke were included in this retrospective study. Serum cystatin C levels were determined in all subjects. Serum concentrations of several vascular risk factors in stoke patients were determined by biochemical assays. The severity of strokes was scored via the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). RESULTS: Serum cystatin C levels were significantly increased in patients with acute ischemic stroke compared with control subjects (1.26 ± 0.34 mg/L vs. 0.78 ± 0.24 mg/L, p < 0.001).When analyzed in quartiles of serum cystatin C levels, concentrations were low (<0.75 mM) for 5 stroke patients (2.92%), intermediate (0.75-1 mM) for 42 patients (24.56%), high (1-1.25 mM) for 45 patients (26.32%), and very high (>1.25 mM) for 79 patients (46.20%). However, serum cystatin C levels were not correlated with NIHSS scores, serum total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, apolipoprotein a, or apolipoprotein b levels. Further, serum cystatin C concentrations in stroke patients were not correlated with the presence of intracranial arterial stenosis, hypertension, or diabetes. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that there is a close relationship between cystatin C and acute ischemic stroke, independently of conventional risk factors. But the levels of cystatin C are not correlated with the stroke severity.
