This study aimed to examine the association between constipation and mild cognitive impairment (MCI); and further elucidate the possible mechanisms involved. A cross-sectional study was conducted among community-dwelling elders (Nâ =â 789) in Nanning, China. Trained research staffs collected detailed information through questionnaires and physical examinations. A Bayesian network model was used to explore the hypothesized causal path. Synergistic effects of constipation with infrequent fruit consumption, inactive physical exercise, or history of stroke were observed in the risks of MCI occurrence. The Bayesian network model analyses showed 3 hypothesized causal-association paths leading to MCI occurrence. Among these, constipation, history of stroke, and years of schooling were directly related to the occurrence of MCI. Years of schooling indirectly affected MCI through infrequent fruit consumption and constipation; or through inactive physical exercises and history of stroke. This study demonstrates a direct association between constipation and increased risks of MCI.

Acute cellular rejection (ACR) is a prevalent postoperative complication following liver transplantation (LT), exhibiting an increasing incidence of morbidity and mortality. However, the molecular mechanisms of ACR following LT remain unclear. To explore the genetic pathogenesis and identify biomarkers of ACR following LT, three relevant Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets consisting of data on ACR or non-ACR patients after LT were comprehensively investigated by computational analysis. A total of 349 upregulated and 260 downregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and eight hub genes (ISG15, HELZ2, HNRNPK, TIAL1, SKIV2L2, PABPC1, SIRT1, and PPARA) were identified. Notably, HNRNPK, TIAL1, and PABPC1 exhibited the highest predictive potential for ACR with AUCs of 0.706, 0.798, and 0.801, respectively. KEGG analysis of hub genes revealed that ACR following LT was predominately associated with ferroptosis, protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, complement and coagulation pathways, and RIG-I/NOD/Toll-like receptor signaling pathway. According to the immune cell infiltration analysis, γδT cells, NK cells, Tregs, and M1/M2-like macrophages had the highest levels of infiltration. Compared to SIRT1, ISG15 was positively correlated with γδT cells and M1-like macrophages but negatively correlated with NK cells, CD4+ memory T cells, and Tregs. In conclusion, this study identified eight hub genes and their potential pathways, as well as the immune cells involved in ACR following LT with the greatest levels of infiltration. These findings provide a new direction for future research on the underlying mechanism of ACR following LT.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammatory responses soon after liver transplantation in children can lead to complications and poor outcomes, so here we examined potential risk factors of such responses. METHODS: Data were retrospectively analyzed for 69 children who underwent liver transplantation at a single center between July 2017 and November 2019 through follow-up lasting up to one years. Numerous clinicodemographic factors were compared between those who suffered early systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) or not. RESULTS: Of the 69 patients in our analysis, early SIRS occurred in 35 [50.7%, 95% confidence interval (CI), 38.6-62.8%]. Those patients showed significantly higher graft-to-recipient weight ratio (3.69 ± 1.26 vs. 3.12 ± 0.99%, P = 0.042) and lower survival rate at one year (85.7% vs. 100%, P = 0.023). Multivariate analysis found graft-to-recipient weight ratio > 4% to be an independent risk factor for early SIRS [odds ratio (OR) 3.8, 95% CI 1.08-13.371, P = 0.037], and a cut-off value of 4.04% predicted the syndrome in our patients, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.656 (95% CI 0.525-0.788, P = 0.026). CONCLUSIONS: Graft-to-recipient weight ratio > 4% may predict higher risk of SIRS soon after liver transplantation in children.

Role conflict is defined as pressures resulting from multiple job requirements that are perceived as incompatible. The purpose of this population-based cross-sectional study was to explore the current situation and influencing factors of high-level role conflict among clinical teachers at 4 affiliated hospitals of 3 medical universities in southern China. A self-administered online questionnaire was used for data collection through an online survey platform. Chi-square tests were used to determine significant differences for categorical variables. Binary logistic regression analysis models were performed for exploring the influencing factors of role conflict in clinical teachers. A total of 208 clinical teachers successfully completed the questionnaires. Of the respondents, 41.3% reportedly had high-level role conflict, and 58.7% had low-level role conflict. The study found that primary, intermediate, and deputy senior professional title, having a leadership position in the department, and devoting a lot of time to teaching work were associated with an increasing risk of the occurrence of high-level role conflict (all Pâ <â .05). However, undertaking moderate or few/very few clinical teaching workloads, keeping clinical teachers informed of the teaching requirements, getting guidance and help from colleagues, and thinking of the teaching work as their obligation were significantly associated with decreasing risks of high-level role conflict (all Pâ <â .05). Teaching management departments in hospitals might carry out regular and systematic professional training for clinical teachers to effectively decrease role conflict and improve the quality of clinical teaching.

Phenomenon: The increase in clinical and teaching workload has brought enormous pressure to clinical teachers. Clinical teachers play an extremely important role in the quality of higher medical education and the cultivation of medical talents. However, few studies have examined the attitudes and practices of clinical teachers regarding the role of teachers in China. This study aimed to investigate clinical teachers' perceptions about their roles and current practices at affiliated hospitals of medical universities in China. Approach: Responses from 312 Chinese clinical teachers were included in the analyses. The data were collected using the questionnaires of perception and practice regarding the role of teachers which consisted of 12 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree), and scored by calculating the mean. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 22.0 (IBM SPSS Corp). Findings: The mean score of perception of clinical teachers regarding the role of teachers was 4.51 (SD = 0.72), and the mean score of practice was 3.69 (SD = 1.17). Multivariable binary logistic regression model showed that undertaking very few/few clinical teaching workload, 'thinking it is my obligation to carry out teaching work seriously' and 'thinking it is my duty to train medical talents' were not only significant determinants of good perception but also good practice. Additionally, 'thinking hospital attached great importance to clinical teaching' was the significant determinant of good perception. Insights: Chinese clinical teachers demonstrate less positive perception and practice regarding the roles of teacher than clinical teachers in developed countries. Affiliated hospitals of medical universities should hold training sessions regularly and take targeted intervention measures to enhance clinical teachers' perception and practice regarding the roles of teacher.

BACKGROUND: Somatic embryogenesis (SE) was recognized as an important tool for plants to propagate. However, our knowledge about the proteins involved in early SE including the callus dedifferentiation is still limited, especially in the economic woody tree - Eucalyptus. RESULTS: We used the data-independent acquisition mass-spectrometry to study the different proteome profiles of early SE of two Eucalyptus species-E. camaldulensis (high regeneratively potential) and E. grandis x urophylla (low regenerative potential). Initially, 35,207 peptides and 7,077 proteins were identified in the stem and tissue-culture induced callus of the two Eucalyptus species. MSstat identified 2,078 and 2,807 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in early SE of E. camaldulensis and E. grandis x urophylla, respectively. They shared 760 upregulated and 420 downregulated proteins, including 4 transcription factors, 31 ribosomal proteins, 1 histone, 3 zinc finger proteins (ZFPs), 16 glutathione transferases, 10 glucosyltransferases, ARF19, WOX8 and PIN1. These proteins might be involved in the early SE of Eucalyptus. By combining the miRNA and RNA-Seq results, some miRNA ~ gene/protein regulatory networks were identified in early SE of Eucalyptus, such as miR160 ~ TPP2, miR164 ~ UXS2, miR169 ~ COX11 and miR535 ~ Eucgr.E01067. Further, we found SERK, WRKY, ZFP and ABC transporter might be related with high SE potential. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our study identified proteins involved in the early SE and related to the high regeneration potential of Eucalyptus. It greatly enhanced our understanding of the early SE and the SE capacity of Eucalyptus.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different levels of potassium magnesium sulfateon (PMS) on growth performance, diarrhea rate, intestinal morphology, antioxidant capacity, intestinal immunity, and gut microbiota in weaned piglets. A total of 216 weaned piglets were randomly divided into six dietary groups: the basal diet with 0% (CON), 0.15, 0.3, 0.45, 0.6, and 0.75% PMS. The results showed that the ADFI of 29-42 days and 1-42 days was linearly and quadratically increased by the PMS supplementation (P < 0.05), and significantly reduced the diarrhea rate in weaned piglets (P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary supplementation with PMS significantly reduced the serum adrenaline and noradrenaline levels in weaned piglets (P < 0.05). Furthermore, 0.3% PMS significantly increased the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the jejunum (P < 0.05) and tended to increase the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the jejunal mucosa of piglets (P < 0.1). Additionally, dietary supplementation with PMS significantly reduced the interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) level in the jejunal mucosa (P < 0.05), and 0.3% PMS increased the serum IgM content in piglets (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the analysis of colonic microbiota by 16S RNA sequencing showed that the addition of PMS increased the Shannon index (P < 0.05) and Observed Species index (P < 0.05). Based on linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) and T-test analysis, the addition of PMS increased the relative abundance of Ruminococcaceae and Peptostreptococcaceae in the colonic digesta (P < 0.05). Spearman analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between intestinal GSH-Px activity and the relative abundance of Peptostreptococcaceae. These results showed that dietary supplementation with PMS could improve growth performance, alleviate diarrhea incidence, and modulate the antioxidant capacity and intestinal immunity in weaned piglets, which was partially related to the significant changes in colonic microbiota composition.

Intestinal epithelial barrier injury disrupts immune homeostasis and leads to many intestinal disorders. Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) strains can influence immune system development and intestinal function. However, the underlying mechanisms of L. reuteri LR1 that regulate inflammatory response and intestinal integrity are still unknown. The present study aimed to determine the effects of LR1 on the ETEC K88-induced intestinal epithelial injury on the inflammatory response, intestinal epithelial barrier function, and the MLCK signal pathway and its underlying mechanism. Here, we showed that the 1 × 109 cfu/ml LR1 treatment for 4 h dramatically decreased interleukin-8 (IL-8) and IL-6 expression. Then, the data indicated that the 1 × 108 cfu/ml ETEC K88 treatment for 4 h dramatically enhanced IL-8, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope (SEM) data indicated that pretreatment with LR1 inhibited the ETEC K88 that adhered on IPEC-J2 and alleviated the scratch injury of IPEC J2 cells. Moreover, LR1 pretreatment significantly reversed the declined transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) and tight junction protein level, and enhanced the induction by ETEC K88 treatment. Additionally, LR1 pretreatment dramatically declined IL-8, IL-17A, IL-6, and TNF-α levels compared with the ETEC K88 group. Then, ETEC K88-treated IPEC-J2 cells had a higher level of myosin light-chain kinase (MLCK), higher MLC levels, and a lower Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) level than the control group, while LR1 pretreatment significantly declined the MLCK and MLC expression and enhanced ROCK level in the ETEC K88-challenged IPEC-J2 cells. Mechanistically, depletion of MLCK significantly declined MLC expression in IPEC-J2 challenged with ETEC K88 compared to the si NC+ETEC K88 group. On the other hand, the TER of the si MLCK+ETEC K88 group was higher and the FD4 flux in the si MLCK+ETEC K88 group was lower compared with the si NC+ETEC K88 group. In addition, depletion of MLCK significantly enhanced Claudin-1 level and declined IL-8 and TNF-α levels in IPEC-J2 pretreated with LR1 followed by challenging with ETEC K88. In conclusion, our work indicated that L. reuteri LR1 can decline inflammatory response and improve intestinal epithelial barrier function through suppressing the MLCK signal pathway in the ETEC K88-challenged IPEC-J2.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to create a function for mapping the cancer-specific instrument (FACT-G) to a preference-based measure (EQ-5D-3 L) utility index for health-related quality of life, with utility scores generated using the Chinese value set. METHOD: A cross-sectional study among 243 Chinese patients with cancer was conducted through EQ-5D-3 L and FACT-G questionnaires survey. The EQ-5D-3 L utility index values were predicted based on OLS, GLM, CLAD, and Tobit model regression approaches. The performance and predictive power of each model were also evaluated using r2 and adj- r2, MAE, RMSE, ICC, and MID. Linear equating was used to avoid regression of the OLS model to mean. The model was validated using a 10-fold cross-validation method. RESULTS: Among all regression models for the FACT-G, the OLS 5 model predicted mean EQ-5D-3 L values the best, in terms of model goodness of fit (r2 = 0.6230, MAE = 0.0448, RMSE = 0.0624). The OLS model proved to be the most accurate for the mean, and the linear equating scores were much closer to the observed scores. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the best algorithm for FACT-G mapping to EQ-5D-3 L utility index is OLS model, based on the survey of Chinese patients with cancer.

The radial change (RC) of tree stem is the process of heartwood formation involved in complex molecular mechanism. Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.), an evergreen species, is an important fast-growing timber tree in southern China. In this study, the top four stable genes (IDH, UBC2, RCA and H2B) were selected in RC tissues of 15 years old Chinese fir stem (RC15) and the genes (H2B, 18S, TIP41 and GAPDH) were selected in RC tissues of 30 years old Chinese fir stem (RC30). The stability of the reference genes is higher in RC30 than in RC15. Sixty-one MYB transcripts were obtained on the PacBio Sequel platform from woody tissues of one 30 years old Chinese fir stem. Based on the number of MYB DNA-binding domain and phylogenetic relationships, the ClMYB transcripts contained 21 transcripts of MYB-related proteins (1R-MYB), 39 transcripts of R2R3-MYB proteins (2R-MYB), one transcript of R1R2R3-MYB protein (3R-MYB) belonged to 18 function-annotated clades and two function-unknown clades. In RC woody tissues of 30 years old Chinese fir stem, ClMYB22 was the transcript with the greatest fold change detected by both RNA-seq and qRT-PCR. Reference genes selected in this study will be helpful for further verification of transcript abundance patterns during the heartwood formation of Chinese fir.

Aim: To explore the expression profiles and functions of circRNAs in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials & methods: We obtained circRNA expression profiles through RNA sequencing. Expression levels of circRNAs were confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR. The effects on HCC progression were determined using Cell Counting Kit 8, clone formation and transwell assays. Results: We identified 114 upregulated and 144 downregulated circRNAs in HCC tissues. The results of quantitative real-time PCR showed that circGNAO1, circRNF180 and circMERTK were significantly downregulated in HCC tissues, whereas circSNX6 was significantly upregulated. CircRNF180 was associated with microvascular invasion. Overexpression of circRNF180 inhibits the proliferation, colony formation, migration and invasion of HCC cells. Conclusion: CircRNF180 may function as a tumor suppressor and could serve as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target in HCC.

This study investigated the effect of berberine (BBR) on growth performance and composition and function of cecal microbiota in yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 360 1-day-old female broilers were assigned to 3 dietary treatments, each with 6 replicates of 20 birds. The dietary treatments consisted of a basal diet as negative control (NC), basal plus 200 mg/kg oxytetracycline calcium and 250 mg/kg nasiheptide as an antibiotic positive control (PC), and basal plus 250 mg/kg BBR. On day 21, 42, and 63, one chicken from each replicate was randomly selected for blood collection and cecal sampling. The 16S rRNA sequencing technology was used to analyze the community composition and function of cecal microbiota. Dietary supplementation with antibiotics or BBR increased the final body weight (BW) at day 63 and the average daily gain (ADG) during 1 to 21 d compared with the NC (P < 0.05). Supplementation with BBR improved the average daily feed intake (ADFI) at 22 to 42 d, 43 to 63 d, and 1 to 63 d (P < 0.05). Feed efficiency, indicated by feed to gain ratio (F/G), increased with PC during day 1 to 21 compared with NC (P < 0.05). The plasma concentrations of total protein at 42 d and uric acid at 21 d were increased, whereas creatine concentration at 63 d was decreased by BBR treatment (P < 0.05). The Chao 1 and Shannon index representing microbial α-diversity was reduced by BBR treatment (P < 0.05). The abundances of phylum Firmicutes and genera Lachnospiraceae, Lachnoclostridium, Clostridiales, and Intestinimonas were decreased, whereas the abundances of phylum Bacteroidetes and genus Bacteroides were increased with BBR treatment. Functional prediction of microbiota revealed that BBR treatment enriched pathways related to metabolism, organismal systems, and genetic information processing, especially DNA replication. The abundance of phylum Bacteroidetes, and genera Bacteroides and Lactobacillus in cecal contents were positively correlated with broiler growth performance. These results demonstrated dietary BBR supplementation improved the growth performance of yellow-feathered broilers, and was closely related to the significant changes in cecal microbiota composition.

BACKGROUND: The psychological status of drivers is related to adverse driving behaviors. Although there are several studies on the mental health and traffic accidents among bus drivers, related studies on the association between mental health and individual characteristics are scarce. METHODS: Our report is on a cross-sectional study of bus drivers that took place between October 2014 and May 2016. A total of 596 bus drivers who worked for transportation companies and underwent occupational physical examinations at The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region workers' Hospital during the study period were included. Demographic characteristics were collected by a self-designed demographic questionnaire. The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R) were used to evaluate the personality and mental health of bus drivers, and the results of the scales were compared with Chinese norms. The structural equation model was used to analyze the correlation among demographic characteristics, personality characteristics, and mental health. RESULTS: Except for the lie dimension, the average scores of the driver's personality dimension were higher than the Chinese norm, and the means of somatization and phobia scores of bus drivers were also higher; obsessions-compulsions, interpersonal sensitivity, and depression scores were lower than those for the Chinese norms. The structural equations modeling revealed that the total effects coefficient of demographic characteristics on mental health was 0.68, and that of personality was 0.60. There were direct influences between demographic characteristics and personality characteristics, demographic characteristics and mental health, and personality characteristics and mental health; the standardized path coefficients were 0.60, 0.50, and 0.30, respectively. Smoking, drinking, and neuroticism were the main factors affecting the mental health of bus drivers; and the standardized path coefficients were 0.56, 0.54, and 0.90 respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, bus drivers were significantly more extroverted, psychotic, and neurotic than the general population; and they were more likely to suffer from somatization and phobia. The mental health of bus drivers was associated with some demographic and personality characteristics in the study. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the selection of bus drivers and intervention measures for drivers with high-risk driving tendencies, which is conducive to better guide road traffic safety construction and reduce the occurrence of road traffic injuries.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of heat-inactivated compound probiotics on growth performance, plasma biochemical indices, and gut microbiota composition and functions in yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 360 1-day-old broilers were randomly divided into 3 groups, including a basal diet as negative control group (PC), basal diet plus antibiotics with 250 mg/kg calcium oxytetracycline and 200 mg/kg Nosiheptide as positive control (PC), and basal diet plus 500 mg/kg compound probiotics consisting of heat-inactivated Bacillus subtilis and Lactobacillus acidophilus BFI (BFI). Each group had 6 replicates of 20 chickens. On d 21, 42, and 63, one chick from each replicate was selected for blood collection and cecal sampling. Compared to the NC group, dietary supplementation with heat-inactivated compound probiotics increased the feed efficiency during d 1-63 (P < 0.05). The plasma cholesterol content at 42 d and creatinine content at 63 d were decreased by dietary supplementation with heat-inactivated compound probiotics (P < 0.05). The dominant phyla in broiler cecal microbiota were Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria, while the dominant genera were Bacteroides, Ruminococcaceae, and Phascolarctobacterium. The ß-diversity index of cecal microbiota in BFI group was increased at d 42 (P < 0.01) and d 63 (P < 0.05). Dietary heat-inactivated compound probiotics increased the relative abundances of Barnesiellaceae (family), Barnesiella (genus), and Lactobacillus aviarius (species) at d 21, and reduced the relative abundances of genera Lachnoclostridium and Peptococcus at d 42, and unidentified Lachnospiraceae and Lachnoclostridium at d 63. The functional prediction of microbiota revealed that supplementation with heat-inactivated compound probiotics enriched the pathways related to methane metabolism, transcription machinery, purine metabolism and protein export. The Spearman's correlation analysis identified a significant correlation between cecal microbiota composition and overall feed efficiency and plasma metabolites. Collectively, dietary heat-inactivated compound probiotics with Bacillus subtilis and Lactobacillus acidophilus BFI enhanced feed efficiency, and decreased plasma cholesterol and creatinine contents, which might be associated with the modulation of community composition, diversity and functions of cecal microbiota in yellow-feathered broilers. These results indicated the potential of heat-inactivated probiotics used as alternatives to antibiotics for improvement of broiler health and productivity.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), as a preclinical phase of dementia, provides an invaluable time window for intervention. Besides several proposed modifiable risk factors, the associations of MCI with dietary habits and bowel movement are not well clarified. We thus conducted a cross-sectional study of community-living Singapore elderly and focused on the relationship of clinically diagnosed MCI with dietary habits and bowel movement frequencies. The multiple logistic regression results showed that frequent (≥4 days per week) fruit consumption (P = 0.004), active (≥4 days per week) bowel movement within 10 minutes (P = 0.027), and years of schooling were negatively associated with MCI occurrence. In contrast, medical comorbidities including hypertension, stroke, and cataract/glaucoma were found to be risk factors. Furthermore, a Bayesian network model of causal inference detected five hypothesized causal-association paths leading to MCI, namely bowel movement, stroke, years of schooling via fruit consumption, hypertension via stroke and hypertension via cataract/glaucoma. The combination of the two direct factors (inactive bowel movement and stroke) reached a maximum conditional probability of 60.00% for MCI occurrence. Taken together, this study was the first to link bowel movement with MCI occurrence. In addition, it suggested five modifiable hypothesized causal-association paths to MCI.

The age of the population is shifting toward the elderly range, which may lead to an increased risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aims of this study are to evaluate the cognitive function in elderly people using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), to identify the relationship between cognitive function and different characteristics, and to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention after six months of cognitive training. In this study, we included 2886 subjects aged â§60 years in the baseline survey, and 140 subjects with MCI who participated in the baseline survey were randomly divided into an intervention group (N = 70) and a control group (N = 70). The control group was not provided any intervention measures, and the intervention group was administered cognitive training. The education level, monthly income, sleep time, exercise time, reading times, and time spent engaging in community activities and performing housework were positively correlated with MoCA scores, but age was negatively correlated with MoCA scores. The total MoCA score of the intervention group increased from 19.77 ± 2.24 points to 21.09 ± 2.20 points after six months of cognitive training, but the score of the control group decreased from 20.41 ± 2.10 points to 19.17 ± 2.57 points. The two-way repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a very significant effect of the interaction between time and cognitive training on the total MoCA score. Seventeen participants in the intervention group improved to normal levels, and no participants progressed to dementia after six months of cognitive training. Thus, the efficacy of the intervention was statistically significant. Our study concludes that older age is associated with a cognitive decline. Factors that are more likely to protect against cognitive decline included a higher education level and monthly income, sufficient sleep time, regular physical exercise and reading, frequently engaging in community activities, and continuing to perform housework. Moreover, the cognitive training intervention is effective and may help to decrease the deterioration of cognitive function in patients with MCI, and the interaction between intervention time and cognitive training significantly improves cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: Information and communications technology (ICT) has been suggested as an important tool for improving global health education and building research capacity in developing countries. However, the existing curricula do not have adequate emphasis on global health research and training. This study was carried out to examine health sciences postgraduates' attitudes and practices regarding curriculum for ICT use in global health research and training in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among health sciences postgraduates from six universities in southern China, during December 2016 to March 2017. A self-administered online questionnaire was used to collect data through an online survey platform. Data were analyzed using SPSS for Windows 13.0. RESULTS: A total of 1065 participants successfully completed the questionnaires. More than 90% of the students have not had any training about ICT, three quarters have not taken an online course, and 31% of the students do not use ICT in their current research. More than 65% thought that, in an ICT research training curriculum, it was important to learn: ICT utilization related knowledge, ICT research methods/resources, knowledge of databases, ways of data use and acquisition, and informatics search methods (ICT users compared to non-users were more likely to agree to these learning components (all p < 0.05)). Many of the respondents used or planned to use mobile phones (80%), Internet (59%), use computer and WeChat (> 40%), and QQ (a popular chat tool in China) (30%) as ICT tools in research activities. ICT users compared to non-users were more likely to consider using ICT and/or biomedical informatics methods in decision-support or support for information seeking, healthcare delivering, academic research, data gathering, and facilitating collaboration (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study showed that ICT utilization was very important to health sciences postgraduates for their research activities in China, but they lacked ICT-related training. The results suggested the need for specialized curriculum related to ICT use in global health research for health sciences postgraduates in China.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), as a transitional stage between normal aging and dementia, causes cognitive decline among one-fifth of elders aged 65 years and older. Health-related lifestyles (HRL) are generally regarded as modifiable influencing factors of cognitive decline. The present study investigated how HRLs at two different life stages (one at midlife and the other at later life) affect MCI occurrence among community-dwelling elders, as part of the Diet and Healthy Aging (DaHA) study in Singapore. The frequencies of major HRL activities were compared between 119 clinical diagnosed MCI cases and 632 normal aging controls with functional cognition. The associations of HRLs with MCI were determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis and adjusted according to known factors including age, childhood education, and major chronic diseases (hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and cataracts or glaucoma). Long-hour working in midlife (adjusted ORâ=â0.418 with 95% CI 0.215-0.812) and social engagement in later-life (adjusted ORâ=â0.532 with 95% CI 0.329-0.859) were associated with reduced risks of MCI, respectively. It is important to note that those elders who had both midlife long-hour working and later-life social engagement were related to the lowest risk of MCI (adjusted ORâ=â0.285 with 95% CI 0.143-0.565), when compared to the least active subgroup who neither had worked long hours in midlife nor participate in social activities in later-life. Therefore, the present study demonstrated that midlife long-hour working and later-life social engagement were modifiable factors for the maintenance of cognitive functions.

The present study aims to determine the association between bus drivers' socio-demographic characteristics, personality traits, mental health and traffic violations. This case-control study included 596 bus drivers who were recruited during October 2014 to May 2016, including 295 drivers with traffic violations and 301 drivers without traffic violations. The bus drivers' personality traits and mental health were assessed by the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and the Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R). Drivers aged 26-35 years were 72% less likely to be involved in traffic violations compared to drivers aged ≤25 years (OR:0.284,95%CI:0.137-0.586). Drivers with ≤2 years driving experience were associated with almost a three-fold increased risk of traffic violations compared to ≥21 years driving experience (OR:3.174,95%CI:1.097-9.187). The OR value decreased with the increase of annual income (OR:4.631,95%CI:2.667-8.042;OR:3.569,95%CI:2.038-6.251;OR:3.781,95%CI:1.999-7.151). Occasionally drinking drivers and regularly drinking drivers, compared to nondrinking drivers, exhibited a higher risk of traffic violations (OR:2.487,95%CI:1.521-4.065;OR:3.271,95%CI:1.387-7.716).Extroversion and neuroticism were identified as significant factors associated with traffic violations (OR:1.262,95%CI:1.145-1.393;OR:1.159,95%CI:1.060-1.267).Somatization increased eleven-fold risk of bus drivers' traffic violations (OR:11.185,95%CI:4.563-27.419). The results revealed that bus drivers' traffic violations were mainly affected by specific socio-demographic characteristics, personality traits and mental health, which increase the risk of traffic violations.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use has been implicated as an important factor for poor sleep quality. However, in most studies, the sleep quality of smokers was only assessed though a self-reported questionnaire, without measuring any internal biomarkers that reflect the levels of tobacco exposure. We examined the association of active and passive smoking with sleep quality, assessed smoking exposure using urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-HOP) as an internal biomarker, and further explored the relationship between 1-HOP and sleep quality. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Liuzhou city, Guangxi, China. A total of 1787 male enterprise workers were enrolled. The smoking attribute data were collected by self-reported questionnaire, and individual sleep quality was evaluated through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The concentration of urinary 1-HOP was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS: Compared with non-smoking, active smoking and passive smoking were significantly associated with long sleep latency (odds ratio, OR=1.84, 95% confidence interval, CI=1.28-2.64; 1.45, 1.00-2.11, respectively), short sleep duration (OR=2.72, 95% CI=1.45-5.09; 1.94, 1.01-3.71, respectively), daytime dysfunction (OR=1.54, 95% CI=1.10-2.17; 1.44, 1.02-2.03, respectively), and overall poor sleep quality with PSQI total score >5 (OR=1.41, 95% CI=1.05-1.88; 1.34, 1.00-1.79, respectively). Compared with non-smokers, active smokers had higher urinary 1-OHP concentrations that were significant (p=0.004), while passive smokers had no significant difference in urinary 1-OHP concentration (p=0.344). The high concentration group was significantly associated with daytime dysfunction and overall poor sleep quality with PSQI total score >5 (OR = 1.73, 95% CI=1.06-2.81; 1.76, 1.18-2.63, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Both active smoking and passive smoking are risk factors for poor sleep quality among Chinese male enterprise workers. Active smokers had significantly higher levels of urinary 1-OHP than non-smokers, and high concentration of 1-OHP was associated with daytime dysfunction and overall poor sleep quality.
