RESUMO

Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a bleeding diathesis caused by auto-antibody generation against factor VIII, an essential component of the coagulation cascade. Although having many etiologies, pregnancy is also one of the conditions associated with AHA. It mostly presents as a raised activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and during the peripartum and postpartum period, concern for AHA should be raised as delays in diagnosis can be detrimental. Herein, we present a case of a 31-year-old female with sickle cell trait who developed venous bleeding and, later, neuraxial, musculoskeletal, and subcutaneous bleeding. She underwent an extensive course of treatment before getting into remission.

RESUMO

Aim: Despite a vast array of research in heart failure (HF), no bibliometric analysis has been conducted for HF. Therefore, we sought to identify in-depth characteristics of 100 most cited publications in HF. Materials & methods: Two independent reviewers searched the Scopus Library Database using a variety of keywords to extract the top 100 articles. Results: Majority (36%) of top 100 cited articles were published between 2001 and 2005. The total number of citations ranged from 6294 to 1003. Females had less than a quarter representation in both first and senior author position. More than three-fourths (86%) of the articles were funded. Conclusion: Our analysis highlights focal areas of research activity in order to guide HF specialists toward impactful research areas.

RESUMO

A new species of Rhabditidae, collected from manure, is described and illustrated. Cephaloboides anisospiculus sp. n., an amphimictic species with a 1:1 sex ratio, is characterized by a small to medium-sized body (female: L = 0.5-0.7 mm, a = 13.6-20.0, b = 2.7-3.6, c = 15.4-22.7, c' = 1.0-1.8, V = 51.2-60.9), finely striated, punctated cuticle; slightly raised labial papillae; stoma with slightly anisomorphic metastegostom; presence of epiptygma; eggs measuring 37-42 x 20-24 µm; slightly protruded vulval lips with cuticular flaps; rectum 16-19 µm long; males with small, stout, slightly arcuate spicules with hood-like capitula and genital papillae in 1/2/(1+3)+2+P configuration; bursa leptoderan, greatly reduced and not enveloping the caudal spike. C. curvicaudatus (Schneider, 1866) Zullini, 1982 is also redescribed, with an emended diagnosis. The present population of C. curvicaudatus shows a few minor differences viz., relatively smaller 'b' value, presence of elongate capitula of spicules and strong copulatory muscle bands. Another species, C. parapapillosus (Schuurmans Stekhoven, 1951) comb. n. has been reinstated.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease in an urban city and to assess the risk factors associated with the condition. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was carried out from June to December 2012 by arranging health camps for asymptomatic population in Karachi at busy shopping areas frequented by people of all socioeconomic classes. The camps provided free screening tests for the general public. Serum creatinine was checked and estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. SPSS 17 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Of the 301 subjects who came to the camps, 293(97%) had their serum creatinine checked. The age range was 30-80 years. Chronic Kidney Disease was found in 75(25.60%)subjects. A significant relationship was found between the disease and Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension (p=0.006). There was also a significant relationship between Hypertension and Diabetes with mean Glomerular Filtration Rate (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In view of the prevalence rate of Chronic Kidney Disease, early screening and risk factor stratification is recommended.

RESUMO

A new genus, one new and two known species belonging to family Rhabdolaimidae are described and illustrated. Mediolaimus n. gen. is characterized by small-sized body; papilliform outer labial and cephalic sensilla; long, tubular stoma with stegostom having relatively larger dorsal and smaller sub ventral denticles at same level; cylindrical pharynx with expanded basal bulb having thickened lumen; didelphic gonad having outstretched ovaries; elongate-conoid tail with hemispherical terminus without mucro or spinneret and caudal glands obscure. Mediolaimus obtusicaudatus n. gen. n. sp. is characterized by stoma with a relatively larger dorsal denticle and two fine subventral denticles at same level; amphidelphic reproductive system with outstretched ovaries; tail elongate conoid with smooth hemispherical terminus and absence of male. Rhabdolaimus terrestrisde Man, 1880 and Udonchus tenuicaudatusCobb, 1913 are described with additional details. The inter population variations are discussed in the latter species along with a detailed note on the status of Rhabdolaimidae and its proposed placement under superfamily Rhabdolaimoidea of suborder Campydorina.
