RESUMO

Background and Purpose: Interfractional geometrical and anatomical variations impact the accuracy of proton therapy for pancreatic cancer. This study investigated field-in-field (FIF) and simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) concepts for scanned proton therapy treatment with different beam configurations. Materials and Methods: Robustly optimized treatment plans for fifteen patients were generated using FIF and SIB techniques with two, three, and four beams. The prescribed dose in 20 fractions was 60 Gy(RBE) for the internal gross tumor volume (IGTV) and 46 Gy(RBE) for the internal clinical target volume. Verification computed tomography (vCT) scans was performed on treatment days 1, 7, and 16. Initial treatment plans were recalculated on the rigidly registered vCTs. V100% and D95% for targets and D2cm3 for the stomach and duodenum were evaluated. Robustness evaluations (range uncertainty of 3.5 %) were performed to evaluate the stomach and duodenum dose-volume parameters. Results: For all techniques, IGTV V100% and D95% decreased significantly when recalculating the dose on vCTs (p < 0.001). The median IGTV V100% and D95% over all vCTs ranged from 74.2 % to 90.2 % and 58.8 Gy(RBE) to 59.4 Gy(RBE), respectively. The FIF with two and three beams, and SIB with two beams maintained the highest IGTV V100% and D95%. In robustness evaluations, the ΔD2cm3 of stomach was highest in two beams plans, while the ΔD2cm3 of duodenum was highest in four beams plans, for both concepts. Conclusion: Target coverage decreased when recalculating on CTs at different time for both concepts. The FIF with three beams maintained the highest IGTV coverage while sparing normal organs the most.

RESUMO

The one-dimensional multicellular cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 exhibits two different cell types under nitrogen-deprived conditions. We found that the intensity of the Raman band at 1,629 cm -1 , which is associated with phycocyanin, was higher in undifferentiated cells (vegetative cells) than in differentiated cells (heterocysts). We observed cells whose band intensity at 1,629 cm -1 was statistically lower than that of vegetative cells, and named them "proheterocysts". We found that proheterocysts did not necessarily differentiate, and could divide or revert to being vegetative cells, as defined by having a higher band intensity at 1,629 cm -1 .

RESUMO

Intramedullary spinal cord metastasis(ISCM)often causes spinal cord neuropathy and should be treated as an oncologic emergency. However, it recurs in most cases after treatment, ISCM is a disease with a very unfavorable prognosis. Herein, we report a successfully treated case of ISCM with emergent and high-dose radiotherapy. A 53-year-old woman had difficulty walking without assistance 2 years after surgery for ovarian cancer. She received emergent radiotherapy at a total dose of 50 Gy in 25 fractions. Her neurological symptoms dramatically improved over 3 weeks after radiotherapy. ISCM has been controlled using the imaging tests at 5 years after radiotherapy. We believe that both emergent and high-dose radiotherapy were effective for ISCM.

RESUMO

The one-dimensional filamentous cyanobacterium, Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, shows a simple morphological pattern consisting of two distinct cell types under nitrogen-deprived conditions. We found that microbial pigment composition in differentiated (heterocyst) and undifferentiated cells (vegetative cells) can be distinguished using Raman microscopy. The Raman bands associated with phycocyanin and allophycocyanin were of higher intensity in vegetative cells than those in heterocysts. However, these bands had statistically lower intensity in vegetative cells located further away from heterocysts. That is, the pigment composition in individual cells is affected by locational information in a filament.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently have motor problems. Previous studies have reported that the characteristic gait in children with ADHD is immature and that subjects demonstrate higher levels of variability in gait characteristics for the lower extremities than healthy controls. However, little is known about body movement during gait in children with ADHD. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristic body movements associated with ADHD symptoms in children with ADHD. METHODS: Using a three-dimensional motion analysis system, we compared gait variables in boys with ADHD (n = 19; mean age, 9.58 years) and boys with typical development (TD) (n = 21; mean age, 10.71 years) to determine the specific gait characteristics related to ADHD symptoms. We assessed spatiotemporal gait variables (i.e. speed, stride length, and cadence), and kinematic gait variables (i.e. angle of pelvis, hip, knee, and ankle) to measure body movement when walking at a self-selected pace. RESULTS: In comparison with the TD group, the ADHD group demonstrated significantly higher values in cadence (t = 3.33, p = 0.002) and anterior pelvic angle (t = 3.08, p = 0.004). In multiple regression analysis, anterior pelvic angle was associated with the ADHD rating scale hyperactive/impulsive scores (ß = 0.62, t = 2.58, p = 0.025), but not other psychiatric symptoms in the ADHD group. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that anterior pelvic angle represents a specific gait variable related to ADHD symptoms. Our kinematic findings could have potential implications for evaluating the body movement in boys with ADHD.
