RESUMO

Solubility enhancement is a key issue for developing the perylene diimide-based functional materials. Introduction of curved structure proved an effective solubilizing method without employing steric repulsion. In this work, wavily curved perylene diimides were developed as a new family of highly soluble curved perylene diimides. Moreover, their conformational dynamics, aggregating properties, electronic properties, and photovoltaic performances were thoroughly examined in comparison to the previously reported isomer exhibiting an arched curvature. The waved isomer demonstrated heightened rigidity and a greater propensity for aggregation compared to the arched isomer, likely attributed to its more planar structure. Each benzoxepin unit played a role in cancelling out the curvature on the opposite side. While the difference in the molecular curvature did not cause significant alterations in the photophysical and electron-accepting properties, we identified that the modulation of the curved structure is effective in controlling the morphology of the photoelectric conversion layer.

We found that our optically CO2 -responsive polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer rapidly and reversibly underwent both visible and fluorescent color changes in the presence of CO2 gas. Unlike conventional optically CO2 -responsive polymeric materials, it functions in totally dry gaseous conditions. The visible color and fluorescence of the elastomer sheet change after only 1 min of exposure to CO2 , and the sheet exhibits excellent repeatability in terms of color switching that persists for at least 20 times.

In this study, we propose heavy-metal-free reductive coupling of arylacetylenes with benzothiazole sulfones. The reactions of alkyl or benzylic benzothiazole sulfones with arylacetylenes are successfully performed in the presence of Hantzsch esters and K2CO3 under visible-light irradiation to afford 1,2-disubstituted alkenes in moderate to good yields, with Z-isomer as the major product. The utility of this protocol is expanded to α-deuterative coupling using a deuterated Hantzsch ester, furnishing the corresponding alkenes with high deuterium incorporation.

RESUMO

A novel anionic heptamethine cyanine (HMC) dye with two trifluoromethyl groups that selectively absorb near-infrared light is synthesized. When contrasted with previously studied anionic HMC dyes with substituents such as methyl, phenyl, and pentafluorophenyl groups, the trifluoromethylated dye displays a red-shifted maximum absorption wavelength (for instance, 948 nm in CH2Cl2) along with enhanced photostability. Furthermore, HMC dyes with broad absorption in the near-infrared region are synthesized by combining a trifluoromethylated anionic HMC dye with a cationic HMC dye as a counterion.

RESUMO

Herein, introducing multiple fluorine atoms into aromatic rings of trimethine cyanine dyes is proposed as a powerful method for dramatically increasing sensitivity to amines. The highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescence properties previously available only by intramolecular addition can be exploited in reactions with intermolecular amines or other nucleophiles.

A one-step route to a series of perfluoronaphthalene-based donor (D)-acceptor (A)-D fluorescent dyes with various electron-donating groups was developed. The perfluoronaphthalene moiety in the D-A-D dyes served as a good electron-accepting aromatic ring with excellent intramolecular charge transfer properties, as determined by density functional theory calculations and measurements of the fluorescence properties in solution, in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films, and in crystal form. Notably, replacing the naphthalene ring with perfluoronaphthalene in the D-A-D dyes carrying the phenothiazine moiety not only stabilized the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels but also reduced the energy band gap to change the emission color from blue to yellow. Among the four synthesized perfluoronaphthalene D-A-D dyes, those bearing diphenylamino groups afforded the best fluorescence quantum yields in Et2O solution (0.60) and in PMMA film (0.65) because the propeller structure of the diphenylamino group that acts as a donor substituent effectively suppresses radiation-free deactivation. In contrast, in the crystalline state, the carbazoyl-bearing D-A-D dye provided the best fluorescence quantum yield (0.35) because the radiation-free inactivation was suppressed by π-πF stacking at the donor site, which was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

A visible-light-induced desulfonylative Giese-type reaction has been developed. Essential to the success is the employment of Hantzsch ester to activate benzothiazole sulfones without any heavy-metal additives. Not only benzylic benzothiazole sulfones but also alkyl ones were viable substrates and reacted with electron-deficient alkenes and a propiol amide.

The influence of N-substituents on the photovoltaic properties of singly bay-linked perylene diimides (diPDIs) was systematically investigated to understand the aromatic-aliphatic balance, which is beneficial for achieving high device performance in organic photovoltaic (OPV) systems. The synthesis of various N-substituted diPDIs was successfully achieved using a newly developed one-step procedure, resulting in sufficiently high yields. Detailed investigations of seven variants of diPDIs demonstrated that the primary alkyl substituents, particularly the 2-ethylhexyl group, induce the self-organized growth of thin films with high crystallinity. This is beneficial for enhancing the device performance of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) systems. The results presented herein reveal the important roles of alkyl side chains as hydrophobic solubilizing auxiliaries or primary determinants in the control of the active layer nanomorphology. This offers a valuable guideline that is essential for developing high-performance organic semiconductor materials for future practical applications.

5,11-Diazadibenzo[hi,qr]tetracene was synthesized as a new nitrogen-substituted polycyclic heteroaromatic compound by Pd-catalyzed cycloisomerization of an alkyne precursor followed by oxidative cyclization with bis(trifluoroacetoxy)iodobenzene. The substitution of imine-type nitrogen atoms significantly enhanced its electron-accepting character and facilitated the direct nucleophilic addition of arylamines under strongly basic conditions to afford the desired amino-substituted products. The introduction of amino groups induced a remarkable red-shift in their absorption spectra; the tetrasubstituted product exhibited intense near-infrared absorbing property. Furthermore, the π-electronic system, which includes a redox-active 1,4-diazabutadiene moiety, underwent reversible interconversion to its corresponding reduced form upon reduction with NaBH4 and aerobic oxidation.

RESUMO

Yoshinone A was derived from marine algae and shown to inhibit adipogenic differentiation. The natural compound is composed of a γ-pyrone ring and a side chain and that contains two asymmetric carbons. Although their absolute configuration has been determined, there is no information available on the stereoisomers and their bioactivities. To address this question, we synthesized all four stereoisomers and measured their activities. We also prepared three more derivatives of yoshinone A and found that the stereo-configuration inside the side chain, the γ-pyrone ring, and bulkiness of the side chain all played important roles in its activity. Our findings should help to elucidate the mechanism of action of yoshinone A.

Curved perylene diimides fused with seven-membered rings have been synthesized using a regioselective bay-functionalization method and Pd-catalyzed intramolecular C-H/C-Br coupling reaction. X-Ray analysis and temperature-dependent NMR spectroscopy revealed the curved molecular structure with a certain degree of conformational flexibility. The curved and expanded π-conjugation altered the electronic properties while retaining the intrinsic properties of the parent perylene diimide. Despite the absence of solubilizing N-substituents, the curved perylene diimides showed sufficient solubility for application in solution-processed organic photovoltaic devices. The devices showed superior performance with a power conversion efficiency of up to 2.76% due to suppressed charge recombination. Our detailed investigations suggest that the introduction of a curved structure enables the removal of the bulky N-substituents, which is an effective way to achieve a thin-film morphology suitable for photoelectric conversion.

RESUMO

Many natural products with extraordinary chemical structures and brilliant biological activities have been obtained from marine organisms. We have investigated such fascinating bioactive molecules, exemplified by the potent marine toxin palytoxin and the antitumor molecule halichondrin B, which has been developed as the anticancer drug Halaven®, to explore novel frontiers in organic chemistry and bioscience. Working within the traditional discipline, we have sought to acquire a deeper understanding of biological phenomena. We introduce here our major work along with up-todate topics. We isolated yoshinone A from marine cyanobacteria and completed a gram-scale synthesis. Yoshinone A is a novel polyketide that inhibited the differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells into adipocytes without significant cytotoxicity. The detailed mechanisms of action will be elucidated via further experiments in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we explore the true producers of okadaic acid and halichondrin B by immunostaining of Halichondria okadai with an antibody that was prepared using these natural products as an antigen. We will analyze isolated symbionts and reveal biosynthetic pathways.

Thus far, only a few methods for the asymmetric synthesis of erythritols bearing a trifluoromethyl group have been developed, and these methods present serious disadvantages such as the requirement of multiple steps for the preparation of their starting materials, low stereoselectivity, and the use of highly toxic reagents. Herein, we have developed a highly diastereo- and enantioselective organocatalytic method to synthesise erythritols bearing a trifluoromethyl group using (1) a commercially available organocatalyst to produce unstable trifluoroacetaldehyde in situ from its corresponding hemiacetal, followed by the simultaneous asymmetric carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction of the organocatalyst with an in situ-generated chiral enamine derived from 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-5-one to obtain the corresponding aldol product in good yield (65-80%) with high diastereoselectivity (up to 94% de) and excellent enantioselectivity (up to >98% ee), (2) the highly diastereoselective reduction of the ketone moiety in the aldol product (up to 98% de), and (3) the deprotection of the acetal moiety.

New synthetic methods for spirolactams bearing an α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone or its analogous methylene-lactam have been developed. The allylation of γ-phenylthio-functionalized γ-lactams with 2-(acetoxy)methyl acrylamides was accomplished by using 2.5 equivalents of NaH to give the corresponding adducts in excellent yields. The remaining phenylthio group was substituted with a hydroxy group by treatment with CuBr, and the resulting γ-hydroxyamides were cyclized under acidic conditions to afford the corresponding methylene-lactam-fused spirolactams in high yields. On the other hand, methylene-lactone-fused spirolactams could be delivered from the allyl adducts in high yields through a sequential N-Boc protection/desulfinative lactonization.

The development of an efficient synthetic protocol for multiply bay-functionalized perylenes and application of these products to photovoltaics are reported. Tetrabenzyl 1-(4-tert-butylphenoxy)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylate underwent a regioselective bromination at the 7-position followed by a further bromination at the 12-position to provide a 7,12-dibromide in high 84% yield. This compound was transformed into a tetrasubstituted C2h -symmetric dibromide by a controlled monoetherification and a final bromination. The synthetic versatility of the new brominated precursors was demonstrated by their application to cross-coupling reactions, cyanation, and derivatization to the corresponding perylene diimide (PDI). Owing to the high solubility and the raised LUMO level, the obtained tetrasubstituted PDI showed significant advantages as an acceptor material for photovoltaic applications, exhibiting a remarkably high open-circuit voltage (VOC ) reaching 1.00 V. The observed high VOC could be understood by reduction of energy offset for charge separation and non-radiative recombination loss.

Pharmaceutically attractive methylene lactone- and methylene lactam-based spiro compounds have been synthesized by employing amido-functionalized γ-hydroxylactam as a common intermediate. Development of a new route for bifurcated synthesis of two types of N,O-spiro compounds was accomplished by treatment of the intermediate under acidic conditions, leading to potent cytotoxic methylene lactone-based spiro compounds. New methylene lactam-based N,N-spiro compounds could be delivered via N-tert-butyloxycarbonyl protection of the terminal amide moiety of the intermediate followed by lactam cyclization under basic conditions.

We have developed a new photon upconversion (UC) system utilizing a new amphiphilic sensitizer 1a that comprises a hydrophilic ruthenium complex and a lipophilic bisanthracene appendage. At concentrations higher than 5 µM in toluene, the sensitizer 1a formed a reverse micellar assembly which facilitated the triplet sensitization of 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) more efficiently than homogeneously dispersed solutions to enhance the UC efficiency up to 38.2%. The Stern-Volmer analyses revealed the stepwise triplet-triplet energy transfers (TTET): (1) intramicellar energy transfer from the ruthenium core to the bisanthracene surface and (2) diffusion-dependent energy transfer from the surface to DPA. On these bases, it can be assumed that the reverse micellar assemblies accelerate the former TTET process to enhance the UC efficiency.

We have developed a novel aromatic fluorine-induced one-pot synthesis of ring-perfluorinated trimethine cyanine dye without the use of a pyridine by reacting hexafluorobenzoindolenine with 5 equiv of methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate in mixed solvents of dimethylformamide and toluene. The thus-obtained ring-perfluorinated trimethine cyanine dye shows much better fluorescence properties, including intensity, quantum yield, and lifetime, than the nonfluorinated dye, not only in CH2Cl2 solution and the poly(methyl methacrylate) film but also in the powder state. Furthermore, ring-perfluorinated trimethine cyanine dye 2a shows better photostability toward white light-emitting diode irradiation than nonfluorinated dye trimethine cyanine dye 2b.

RESUMO

Minnamide A is a lipopeptide with a unique repeating structure consisting of hydroxy and proposed ß-branched methyl groups. The absolute configuration of minnamide A was determined by a combination of chemical degradation, chiral HPLC analyses, and synthetic methods. Minnamide A showed growth-inhibitory activity toward HeLa cells with an IC50 value of 0.17 µM and rapidly induced cell death at a concentration of 2 µM. Minnamide A induced the copper-mediated accumulation of reactive oxygen species.

NIR absorbing squaraine dyes SQ1-SQ7 having 1 H-benzo[ c, d]indol-2-ylidene as a donor moiety were designed for application in DSSCs. Annulation of the benzene ring to an 3 H-indolium-based anchor moiety led to a red-shifted and broadened absorption band on TiO2 film, which were reflected in the improved short-circuit current density of SQ2 (6.22 mA cm-2) compared to the nonbenzene fused derivative SQ1 (4.39 mA cm-2). Although the introduction of a butoxy (SQ4: 806 nm) or dialkylamino group (SQ5-SQ7: 815-820 nm) to the 1 H-benzo[ c, d]indol-2-ylidene-based donor moiety resulted in red-shifted absorption maxima in ethanol compared to the nonsubstituted derivative SQ2 (784 nm), the HOMO energy level of SQ4-SQ7 gave rise to an undesirable approximation to the redox potential of I-/I3-. Thus, the butoxy (SQ4: 0.56) and dialkylamino (SQ5-SQ7: 0.25-0.30) derivatives had relatively lower conversion efficiencies. Since the 2-ethylhexyl derivative SQ3 exhibited red-shifted absorption (λmax: 796 nm), suitable HOMO and LUMO energy levels, and relatively efficient restriction of charge recombination, this dye achieved the highest conversion efficiency (1.31%), along with a high IPCE response of over 20% over a wide range from 640 to 860 nm and an onset of IPCE at 1000 nm.
