BACKGROUND: Millions of people die every year as a result of antimicrobial resistance worldwide. An inappropriate prescription of antimicrobials (e.g., overuse, inadequate use, or a choice that diverges from established guidelines) can lead to a heightened risk of antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to determine the rate and appropriateness of antimicrobial prescriptions for respiratory tract infections. METHODS: This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest Health and Medicine, and Scopus were searched between October 1, 2023, and December 15, 2023, with no time constraints. Studies were independently screened by the first author and the co-authors. We included original studies reporting antimicrobial prescription patterns and appropriateness for respiratory tract infections. The quality of included studies' was assessed via the Joanna Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Checklists for Cross-Sectional Studies. The assessment of publication bias was conducted using a funnel plot and Egger's regression test. A random effect model was employed to estimate the pooled antibiotic prescribing and inappropriate rates. Subgroup analysis was conducted by country, study period, data source, and age group. RESULTS: Of the total 1220 identified studies, 36 studies were included in the review. The antimicrobial prescribing rate ranged from 25% (95% CI 0.24-0.26) to 90% (95% CI 0.89-0.91). The pooled antimicrobial prescription rate was 66% (95% CI 0.57 to 0.73). Subgroup analysis by region revealed that the antimicrobial prescription rate was highest in Africa (79%, 95% CI 0.48-0.94) and lowest in Europe (47%, 95% CI 0.32-0.62). Amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanate antimicrobials from the Access group, along with azithromycin and erythromycin from the Watch group, were the most frequently used antimicrobial agents. This study revealed that the major reasons for antimicrobial prescription were acute bronchitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, and the common cold. The pooled inappropriate antimicrobial prescription rate was 45% (95% CI 0.38-0.52). Twenty-eight of the included studies reported that prescribing antimicrobials without proper indications was the main cause of inappropriate antimicrobial prescriptions. Additionally, subgroup analysis by region showed a higher inappropriate antimicrobial prescription rate in Asia at 49% (95% CI 0.38-0.60). The result of the funnel plot and Egger's tests revealed no substantial publication bias (Egger's test: p = 0.268). CONCLUSION: The prescribing rate and inappropriate use of antimicrobials remain high and vary among countries. Further studies should be conducted to generate information about factors contributing to unnecessary antimicrobial prescriptions in outpatients. BACKGROUND: Mental illness is a global problem that receives less attention, particularly in developing countries. Integrating modern treatment with traditional healing approaches has been proposed as one way to address mental health problems, especially in developing countries. Despite health professionals' participation in traditional healing being crucial to integrative approaches, their participation is limited to date. This review protocol is designed to explore the attitudes of health professionals towards traditional healing practices in mental health services. METHODS: The review will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Searching databases, including PubMed/Medline, PsychINFO, EMBASE, Scopus, and the Web of sciences will be conducted. Additionally, Google and Google Scholar will be searched for other information, including grey literature. Moreover, a manual search of identified articles' reference lists will also be conducted to help ensure all potential papers are included in the review. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed study methods published in English between January 2014 and April 2024 will be included. The qualities of the included studies will be assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) Version 2018. A mixed-method synthesis will be used to synthesis the results. DISCUSSION: It is crucial for healthcare professionals to provide culturally sensitive care to empower people to manage their health. This systematic review will summarize the attitudes of health professionals towards the adoption and delivery of traditional healing approaches to people experiencing mental illness. Therefore, the findings of this review will support integration between traditional healers and modern mental health practitioners for the treatment of mental illness. Over 90 % of all cases of diabetes that have been diagnosed are type 2 diabetes (T2D), a disease exacerbated by an increase in sedentary behaviour, bad eating habits, and obesity. This study investigated the antidiabetic properties of Gracilaria gracilis, using in vitro and ex vivo experimental models. The sulphated polysaccharides (SPs) from crude extracts of the seaweed powder was prepared via hot (100°C) and cold (25°C) aqueous extraction procedures before purification via an anion exchange chromatographic technique. Both the crude and purified extracts were characterised by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), LC-MS analysis, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The crude cold-aqueous and purified hot-aqueous SPs from G. gracilis had the strongest α-glucosidase inhibitory effect with IC50 value of 0.15 and 0.07 mg/ml, respectively. The purified cold-aqueous SP was the most potent inhibitor of α-glucosidase with an IC50 value of 0.17 mg/ml. The crude and purified SP-rich extracts inhibited pancreatic lipase (hot aqueous SP = 0.03 mg/ml) activity and effectively stimulated glucose uptake in yeast cells. Moreover, they showed significantly (p < 0.05) better intestinal glucose absorption inhibitory properties at the highest concentration (1 mg/ml) and displayed significantly (p < 0.05) better muscle glucose uptake compared to the commercial antidiabetic drug, metformin, at the same concentration. Overall, the current findings indicate that G. gracilis SPs may inhibit carbohydrate-hydrolysing enzymes, limit the release of simple sugars from the gut whilst effectively stimulating the use of glucose by peripheral tissue thus may be suitable to develop antidiabetic food supplements after further animal and clinical trials.

Recently, the roles of pyroptosis, a form of cell death induced by activated NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) have been extensively investigated. However, most studies have focused mainly on whether diabetes increases the NLRP3 inflammasome and associated pyroptosis in the heart of type 1 or type 2 diabetic rodent models, and whether various medications and natural products prevent the development of DCM, associated with decreased levels of cardiac NLRP3 inflammasome and pyroptosis. The direct link of NLRP3 inflammasome and associated pyroptosis to the pathogenesis of DCM remains unclear based on the limited evidence derived from the available studies, with the approaches of NLRP3 gene silencing or pharmaceutical application of NLRP3 specific inhibitors. We thus emphasize the requirement for more systematic studies that are designed to provide direct evidence to support the link, given that several studies have provided both direct and indirect evidence under specific conditions. This editorial emphasizes that the current investigation should be circumspect in its conclusion, i.e., not overemphasizing its role in the pathogenesis of DCM with the fact of only significantly increased expression or activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and pyroptosis in the heart of diabetic rodent models. Only clear-cut evidence-based causative roles of NLRP3 inflammasome and pyroptosis in the pathogenesis of DCM can help to develop effective and safe medications for the clinical management of DCM, targeting these biomarkers.

Background: Type 1 (T1D) and type 2 (T2D) diabetes lead to an aberrant metabolism of sialoglycoconjugates and elevated free serum sialic acid (FSSA) level. The present study evaluated sialidase and sialyltranferase activities in serum and some organs relevant to diabetes at early and late stages of T1D and T2D. Methods: Sialic acid level with sialidase and sialyltransferase activities were monitored in the serum, liver, pancreas, skeletal muscle and kidney of diabetic animals at early and late stages of the diseases. Results: The FSSA and activity of sialidase in the serum were significantly increased at late stage of both T1D and T2D while sialic acid level in the liver was significantly decreased in the early and late stages of T1D and T2D, respectively. Furthermore, the activity of sialidase was significantly elevated in most of the diabetes-relevant organs while the activity of sialyltransferase remained largely unchanged. A multiple regression analysis revealed the contribution of the liver to the FSSA while pancreas and kidney contributed to the activity of sialidase in the serum. Conclusions: We concluded that the release of hepatic sialic acid in addition to pancreatic and renal sialidase might (in)directly contribute to the increased FSSA during both types of diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Many kinds of orchids have significant health benefits although adequate research on their biological functions is yet to be carried out. This study investigated the paracetamol-induced liver damage-protecting effect of epiphytic Aerides odorata methanol extract (AODE). METHODS: The protective effects of AODE were studied by analyzing its effect on liver function parameters, messenger RNA (mRNA) expression, and tissue histopathological architecture. The results were confirmed by ligand-receptor interaction of molecular docking and multitarget interaction of network pharmacological analyses. RESULTS: AODE significantly (p < 0.05) minimized the dose-dependent increase in acid phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, γ-glutamyl transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and total bilirubin compared to the reference drug silymarin. Malondialdehyde level decreased, and the antioxidant genes catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ß-actin, paraoxonase-1 (PON1), and phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1) were upregulated in AODE-treated paracetamol-intoxicated rats. A total of 376 compounds comprising phenols and flavonoids were identified using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-qTOF-MS). The online toxicity assessment using SwissADME and admetSAR exhibited drug-like, nontoxic, and potential pharmacological properties. Additionally, in silico analysis showed that isoacteoside, one of the identified compounds, exhibited the best docking score (-11.42) with the liver protein human pituitary adenylate cyclase-1 (Protein Data Bank ID: 3N94). Furthermore, network pharmacology analysis identified the top 10 hub genes, namely AKT1 (protein kinase B), CTNNB1 (catenin beta-1), SRC (proto-oncogene c-Src), TNF (tumor necrosis factor), EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor), HSP90AA1 (heat shock protein 90α), MAPK3 (mitogen-activated protein kinase 3), STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3), CASP3 (caspase protein), and ESR1 (estrogen receptor 1), which are responsible for hepatoprotective activity. CONCLUSION: The findings demonstrate that AODE could be a novel hepatoprotective target in drug-induced liver damage with a further single compound-based animal study.

BACKGROUND: Coffee beans have a long history of use as traditional medicine by various indigenous people. Recent focus has been given to the health benefits of coffee beans and its bioactive compounds. Research on the bioactivities, applications, and effects of processing methods on coffee beans' phytochemical composition and activities has been conducted extensively. The current review attempts to provide an update on the biological effects of coffee on type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its comorbidities. METHODS: Comprehensive literature search was carried out on peer-reviewed published data on biological activities of coffee on in vitro, in vivo and epidemiological research results published from January 2015 to December 2022, using online databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect for our searches. RESULTS: The main findings were: firstly, coffee may contribute to the prevention of oxidative stress and T2D-related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, obesity, and metabolic syndrome; secondly, consuming up to 400 mg/day (1-4 cups per day) of coffee is associated with lower risks of T2D; thirdly, caffeine consumed between 0.5 and 4 h before a meal may inhibit acute metabolic rate; and finally, both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee are associated with reducing the risks of T2D. CONCLUSION: Available evidence indicates that long-term consumption of coffee is associated with decreased risk of T2D and its complications as well as decreased body weight. This has been attributed to the consumption of coffee with the abundance of bioactive chemicals.

This article introduces a novel mathematical model analyzing the dynamics of Dengue in the recent past, specifically focusing on the 2023 outbreak of this disease. The model explores the patterns and behaviors of dengue fever in Bangladesh. Incorporating a sinusoidal function reveals significant mid-May to Late October outbreak predictions, aligning with the government's exposed data in our simulation. For different amplitudes (A) within a sequence of values (A = 0.1 to 0.5), the highest number of infected mosquitoes occurs in July. However, simulations project that when ßM = 0.5 and A = 0.1, the peak of human infections occurs in late September. Not only the next-generation matrix approach along with the stability of disease-free and endemic equilibrium points are observed, but also a cutting-edge Machine learning (ML) approach such as the Prophet model is explored for forecasting future Dengue outbreaks in Bangladesh. Remarkably, we have fitted our solution curve of infection with the reported data by the government of Bangladesh. We can predict the outcome of 2024 based on the ML Prophet model situation of Dengue will be detrimental and proliferate 25 % compared to 2023. Finally, the study marks a significant milestone in understanding and managing Dengue outbreaks in Bangladesh.

An alternative way for the coating of polypyrrole (PPy) polymer on hydrophobic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles is reported here to capture toxic chromium ions, Cr (VI), present in water. Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) were synthesized by the conventional coprecipitation technique using FeCl3·6H2O and FeSO4·7H2O iron precursors and subsequently modified with oleic acid (OA). Then OA-Fe3O4 hydrophobic nanoparticles were oxidized using the Lemieux-von Rudloff reaction to transfer OA into hydrophilic azelaic acid (AA) (HOOC(CH2)7COOH-modified magnetic nanoparticles (AA-Fe3O4). Finally, a PPy polymer coating was formed by a seeded polymerization of pyrrole, using AA-Fe3O4 as seeds. The average size of PPy/Fe3O4 nanocomposites is 12.33 nm and is almost spherical in shape. The surface composition is confirmed by FTIR and thermogravimetry analyses. An X-ray diffraction study confirmed the formation of highly crystalline Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and the crystallinity was retained after the surface modification. The adsorption study suggested that the Cr(VI) ion adsorption is highly pH-dependent and the maximum amount of adsorption is obtained at pH 2.0. The adsorption results revealed that the Langmuir model provided the best fit for the isotherm, with a maximum adsorption capacity reaching approximately 173.22 mg g-1 at 323 K. Spontaneous and endothermic adsorption processes were confirmed by evaluating the thermodynamic parameters obtained in this investigation. The kinetics study showed that the interaction between Cr(VI) ions and magnetic nanocomposites was directed by a pseudo-second-order rate process indicating chemisorption. The prepared PPy/Fe3O4 nanocomposites would be promising adsorbents to purify water by eliminating Cr(VI) metal ions from wastewater.

This editorial is stimulated by the article by Alqifari et al published in the World Journal of Diabetes (2024). Alqifari et al focus on practical advice for the clinical use of glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) in the management of type 2 diabetes and this editorial provides complementary information. We initially give a brief historical perspective of the development of GLP-1RAs stimulated by recognition of the 'incretin effect', the substantially greater insulin increase to enteral when compared to euglycaemic intravenous glucose, and the identification of the incretin hormones, GIP and GLP-1. In addition to stimulating insulin, GLP-1 reduces postprandial glucose levels by slowing gastric emptying. GLP-1RAs were developed because native GLP-1 has a very short plasma half-life. The majority of current GLP-1RAs are administered by subcutaneous injection once a week. They are potent in glucose lowering without leading to hypoglycaemia, stimulate weight loss in obese individuals and lead to cardiovascular and renal protection. The landscape in relation to GLP-1RAs is broadening rapidly, with different formulations and their combination with other peptides to facilitate both glucose lowering and weight loss. There is a need for more information relating to the effects of GLP-1RAs to induce gastrointestinal symptoms and slow gastric emptying which is likely to allow their use to become more effective and personalised.

Two libraries of quinoline-based hybrids 1-(7-chloroquinolin-4-yl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-amine and 7-chloro-N-phenylquinolin-4-amine were synthesized and evaluated for their α-glucosidase inhibitory and antioxidant properties. Compounds with 4-methylpiperidine and para-trifluoromethoxy groups, respectively, showed the most promising α-glucosidase inhibition activity with IC50 =46.70 and 40.84 µM, compared to the reference inhibitor, acarbose (IC50 =51.73 µM). Structure-activity relationship analysis suggested that the cyclic secondary amine pendants and para-phenyl substituents account for the variable enzyme inhibition. Antioxidant profiling further revealed that compounds with an N-methylpiperazine and N-ethylpiperazine ring, respectively, have good DPPH scavenging abilities with IC50 =0.18, 0.58 and 0.93 mM, as compared to ascorbic acid (IC50 =0.05 mM), while the best DPPH scavenger is NO2 -substituted compound (IC50 =0.08 mM). Also, compound with N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine moiety emerged as the best NO radical scavenger with IC50 =0.28 mM. Molecular docking studies showed that the present compounds are orthosteric inhibitors with their quinoline, pyrimidine, and 4-amino units as crucial pharmacophores furnishing α-glucosidase binding at the catalytic site. Taken together, these compounds exhibit dual potentials; i. e., potent α-glucosidase inhibitors and excellent free radical scavengers. Hence, they may serve as structural templates in the search for agents to manage Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Finally, in preliminary assays investigating the anti-tubercular potential of these compounds, two pyrazolopyrimidine series compounds and a 7-chloro-N-phenylquinolin-4-amine hybrid showed sub-10 µM whole-cell activities against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Almond consumption has an inverse relationship with obesity and factors related to metabolic syndrome. However, the results of available clinical trials are inconsistent. Therefore, we analyzed the results of 37 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and evaluated the association of almond consumption with subjective appetite scores and body compositions. METHODS: Net changes in bodyweight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), fat mass (FM), body fat percent, fat-free mass (FFM), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and subjective appetite scores were used to calculate the effect size, which was reported as a weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: This meta-analysis was performed on 37 RCTs with 43 treatment arms. The certainty in the evidence was very low for appetite indices, body fat percent, FFM, VAT, and WHR, and moderate for other parameters as assessed by the GRADE evidence profiles. Pooled effect sizes indicated a significant reducing effect of almond consumption on body weight (WMD: -0.45 kg, 95% CI: -0.85, -0.05, p = 0.026), WC (WMD: -0.66 cm, 95% CI: -1.27, -0.04, p = 0.037), FM (WMD: -0.66 kg, 95% CI: -1.16, -0.17, p = 0.009), and hunger score (WMD: -1.15 mm, 95% CI: -1.98, -0.32, p = 0.006) compared with the control group. However, almond did not have a significant effect on BMI (WMD: -0.20 kg m-2, 95% CI: -0.46, 0.05, p = 0.122), body fat percent (WMD: -0.39%, 95% CI: -0.93, 0.14, p = 0.154), FFM (WMD: -0.06, 95% CI: -0.47, 0.34, p = 0.748), WHR (WMD: -0.04, 95% CI: -0.12, 0.02, p = 0.203), VAT (WMD: -0.33 cm, 95% CI: -0.99, 0.32), fullness (WMD: 0.46 mm, 95% CI: -0.95, 1.88), desire to eat (WMD: 0.98 mm, 95% CI: -4.13, 2.23), and prospective food consumption (WMD: 1.08 mm, 95% CI: -2.11, 4.28). Subgroup analyses indicated that consumption of ≥50 g almonds per day resulted in a significant and more favorable improvement in bodyweight, WC, FM, and hunger score. Body weight, WC, FM, body fat percent, and hunger scores were decreased significantly in the trials that lasted for ≥12 weeks and in the subjects with a BMI < 30 kg/m2. Furthermore, a significant reduction in body weight and WC was observed in those trials that used a nut-free diet as a control group, but not in those using snacks and other nuts. The results of our analysis suggest that almond consumption may significantly improve body composition indices and hunger scores when consumed at a dose of ≥50 g/day for ≥12 weeks by individuals with a BMI < 30 kg/m2. CONCLUSION: However, further well-constructed randomized clinical trials are needed in order ascertain the outcome of our analysis.

At present, structural optimization is a highly demanding area of research in engineering. Engineers aim to minimize material in a body while maintaining its usability and safety at the same time. Developing a user-friendly program to optimize a structure using the finite element method (FEM) is the goal of the current study. With the advent of additive manufacturing, the production of complex-shaped designs is showing promise. A detailed optimization algorithm based on solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) is presented in this paper. UnTop2D: An object-oriented Python program with a graphical user interface (GUI) has been developed, which can be applied to structures with both structured and unstructured meshes. The mesh is not required to be topologically ball and can be imported from professional meshing software. Any selected element can be frozen to prevent its removal during optimization, and wall elements can also be frozen for real-world scenarios. The optimized structure can be exported as an Abaqus input file for structural analysis and STL file for 3D printing. This paper presents several examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance is growing globally. The practice of health professionals when prescribing antibiotics in primary health care settings significantly impacts antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic prescription is a complex process influenced by various internal and external factors. This systematic review aims to summarize the available evidence regarding factors contributing to the variation in antibiotic prescribing among physicians in primary healthcare settings. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines. We included qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies that examined factors influencing prescription practice and variability among primary healthcare physicians. We excluded editorials, opinions, systematic reviews and studies published in languages other than English. We searched studies from electronic databases: PubMed, ProQuest Health and Medicine, Web Science, and Scopus. The quality of the included studies was appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (Version 2018). Narrative synthesis was employed to synthesize the result and incorporate quantitative studies. RESULTS: Of the 1816 identified studies, 49 studies spanning 2000-2023 were eligible for review. The factors influencing antibiotic prescription practice and variability were grouped into physician-related, patient-related, and healthcare system-related factors. Clinical guidelines, previous patient experience, physician experience, colleagues' prescribing practice, pharmaceutical pressure, time pressure, and financial considerations were found to be influencing factors of antibiotic prescribing practice. In addition, individual practice patterns, practice volume, and relationship with patients were also other factors for the variability of antibiotic prescription, especially for intra-physician prescription variability. CONCLUSION: Antibiotic prescription practice in primary health care is a complex practice, influenced by a combination of different factors and this may account for the variation. To address the factors that influence the variability of antibiotic prescription (intra- and inter-physician), interventions should aim to reduce diagnostic uncertainty and provide continuous medical education and training to promote patient-centred care.

Jute, eco-friendly natural fiber, depends on conventional water-based microbial retting process that suffers from the production of low-quality fiber, restricting its diversified applications. The efficiency of water retting of jute depends on plant polysaccharide fermenting pectinolytic microorganisms. Understanding the phase difference in retting microbial community composition is crucial to provide knowledge on the functions of each member of microbiota for the improvement of retting and fiber quality. The retting microbiota profiling of jute was commonly performed previously using only one retting phase with culture-dependent methods which has limited coverage and accuracy. Here, for the first we have analyzed jute retting water through WGS metagenome approach in three phases (pre-retting, aerobic retting, and anaerobic retting phases) and characterized the microbial communities both culturable and non-culturable along with their dynamics with the fluctuation of oxygen availability. Our analysis revealed a total of 25.99 × 104 unknown proteins (13.75%), 16.18 × 105 annotated proteins (86.08%), and 32.68 × 102 ribosomal RNA (0.17%) in the pre-retting phase, 15.12 × 104 unknown proteins (8.53%), 16.18 × 105 annotated proteins (91.25%), and 38.62 × 102 ribosomal RNA (0.22%) in the aerobic retting phase, and 22.68 × 102 ribosomal RNA and 80.14 × 104 (99.72%) annotated protein in the anaerobic retting phase. Taxonomically, we identified 53 different phylotypes in the retting environment, with Proteobacteria being the dominant taxa comprising over 60% of the population. We have identified 915 genera from Archaea, Viruses, Bacteria, and Eukaryota in the retting habitat, with anaerobic or facultative anaerobic pectinolytic microflora being enriched in the anoxic, nutrient-rich retting niche, such as Aeromonas (7%), Bacteroides (3%), Clostridium (6%), Desulfovibrio (4%), Acinetobacter (4%), Enterobacter (1%), Prevotella (2%), Acidovorax (3%), Bacillus (1%), Burkholderia (1%), Dechloromonas (2%), Caulobacter (1%) and Pseudomonas (7%). We observed an increase in the expression of 30 different KO functional level 3 pathways in the final retting stage compared to the middle and pre-retting stages. The main functional differences among the retting phases were found to be related to nutrient absorption and bacterial colonization. These findings reveal the bacterial groups that are involved in fiber retting different phases and will facilitate to develop future phase-specific microbial consortia for the improvement of jute retting process.

Multifunctional surface-active polymeric composites are attractive materials for the adsorption of various small molecules. Herein, dual-functionalized micron-sized surface-active composite polymer particles were prepared by a three-step process for CO2 adsorption. First, polystyrene (PS) seed particles were prepared via the dispersion polymerization of styrene. PS/P(MMA-AAm-EGDMA) composite polymer particles were then synthesized by aqueous seeded copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and acrylamide (AAm) in the presence of an ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) cross-linker. Finally, the amide moieties of PS/P(MMA-AAm-EGDMA) composite particles were converted into an amine-functionalized composite by using the Hofmann degradation reaction. The presence of primary amine groups on the surface of aminated composite particles was confirmed by some conventional chemical routes, such as diazotization and Schiff's base formation reactions. The formation and functionality of the PS seed, PS/P(MMA-AAm-EGDMA), and aminated PS/P(MMA-AAm-EGDMA) composite polymer particles were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analyses. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed spherical shape, size, and surface morphologies of the PS seed, reference composite, and aminated composites. The elemental surface compositions, surface porosity, pore volume, pore diameter, and surface area of both composite particles were evaluated by energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analyses. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and ζ-potential measurements confirmed the pH-dependent surface properties of the functionalized particles. The amount of the adsorbed anionic emulsifier, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), on the surface of aminated PS/P(MMA-AAm-EGDMA) is higher at pH 4 than that at pH 10. A vice versa result was found in the case of cationic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTABr), adsorption. Synthesized aminated composite particles were used as an adsorbent for CO2 adsorption via bubbling CO2 in an aqueous medium. The changes in dispersion pH were monitored continuously during the adsorption of CO2 under various conditions. The amount of CO2 adsorption by aminated composite particles was found to be 209 mg/g, which is almost double that of reference composite particles.

BACKGROUND: Since its emergence, the COVID-19 pandemic has compromised the food security both directly by impacting food supply chain and indirectly by overwhelming the individual health and/or personal financial situation. The overarching aim of the current study is to assess aspects of the food security crisis that have arisen due to COVID-19 and to identify which, if any, food security dimensions were specifically compromised. METHODS: Primary research articles were initially identified through four online databases (Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science), with the references of each paper then also reviewed for additional article. The food security status of individuals and the wider community, both before and after the emergence of COVID-19, were examined. RESULTS: Of the 2,057 studies initially identified, a total of ten were included in the final review. The included studies confirmed that COVID-19 had substantially impacted food security, with individuals, households and the wider community experiencing food insecurity. Nine of the included studies aruged that the food accessibility dimension was the most compromised. CONCLUSION: To address the identified direct and indirect food security issues associated with COVID-19, it is proposed that a combination of prevention practices and proactive food security activities is required. Integrating food security interventions, supporting and facilitating food security resilience, and conducting further studies on the food security of COVID-19 are also recommended.

Diabetes and associated complications represent major global public health issues which are associated with impaired quality of life and premature death. Although some diabetic complications have decreased in the developed world, the majority are still prevalent, with an increasing trend in the developing world. Currently used therapies are mainly 'glucocentric', focusing on the optimization of glycemic control to prevent, delay or manage diabetes-associated complications- other common comorbidities, such as dyslipidemia and hypertension are often underestimated. Although a number of novel therapeutic approaches have been reported recently, some of them have not received comparable attention in relation to either further studies or potential clinical implementation. This editorial briefly discusses some recent therapeutic approaches to the prevention and management of diabetes and its associated complications, as well as potential directions for future research and development in this area.
