RESUMO

The manuscript combines rational density functional theory simulations and experimental data to investigate the electrical properties of eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The optimized geometries reveal a preference for one-row, two-row and three-row ring distributions. Band structure plots demonstrate an inverse correlation between the number of aromatic rings and band gap size, with a specific order observed across the PAHs. Gas phase simulations support these findings, though differences in values are noted compared to the literature. Introducing a two-row ring distribution concept resolves discrepancies, particularly in azulene. The B3LYP function successfully bridges theoretical and experimental gaps, particularly in large PAHs. The manuscript highlights the potential for designing electronic devices based on different-sized PAHs, emphasizing a multi-ring distribution approach and opening new avenues for practical applications.

The optical properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer nanocomposite films incorporating SrTiO3/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as nanofillers are investigated. PVDF/SrTiO3/CNTs films were prepared by the solution casting technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses confirmed the incorporation of SrTiO3/CNTs into the PVDF matrix. The addition of nanofillers influenced the crystalline structure, morphology, and optical properties of the films. SEM images showed spherulite morphology, which is a spherical aggregate of crystalline polymer chains. The addition of a SrTiO3/CNTs nanofiller modified the polymer's electronic structure, causing a variation in the energy gap. The addition of SrTiO3/CNTs at 0.1 wt% increased the band gap, refractive index, and nonlinear optical properties of the PVDF films. These improvements indicate the potential of these nanocomposite films in optoelectronic applications such as solar cells, image sensors, and organic light-emitting diodes.

This study aims to prepare new nanocomposites consisting of Cr2O3/CaCO3 as a catalyst for improved hydrogen production from NaBH4 methanolysis. The new nanocomposite possesses nanoparticles with the compositional formula Cr2-xCaxO3 (x = 0, 0.3, and 0.6). These samples were prepared using the sol-gel method, which comprises gelatin fuel. The structure of the new composites was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), and X-ray spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD data showed the rhombohedral crystallinity of the studied samples, and the average crystal size was 25 nm. The FTIR measurements represented the absorption bands of Cr2O3 and CaO. The ESEM micrographs of the Cr2O3 showed the spherical shape of the Cr2O3 nanoparticles. The XPS measurements proved the desired oxidation states of the Cr2-xCaxO3 nanoparticles. The optical band gap of Cr2O3 is 3.0 eV, and calcium doping causes a reduction to 2.5 and 1.3 eV at 15.0 and 30.0% doping ratios. The methanolysis of NaBH4 involved accelerated H2 production when using Cr2-xCaxO3 as a catalyst. Furthermore, the Cr1.7Ca0.3O3 catalyst had the highest hydrogen generation rate, with a value of 12,750 mL/g/min.

A substantial potential advantage of industrial electric and thermoelectric devices utilizing endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) is their ability to accommodate metallic moieties inside their empty cavities. Experimental and theoretical studies have elucidated the merit of this extraordinary feature with respect to developing electrical conductance and thermopower. Published research studies have demonstrated multiple state molecular switches initiated with 4, 6, and 14 distinguished switching states. Through comprehensive theoretical investigations involving electronic structure and electric transport, we report 20 molecular switching states that can be statistically recognized employing the endohedral fullerene Li@C60 complex. We propose a switching technique that counts on the location of the alkali metal that encapsulates inside a fullerene cage. The 20 switching states correspond to the 20 hexagonal rings that the Li cation energetically prefers to reside close to. We demonstrate that the multiswitching feature of such molecular complexes can be controlled by taking advantage of the off-center displacement and charge transfer from the alkali metal to the C60 cage. The most energetically favorable optimization suggests 1.2-1.4 Å off-center displacement, and Mulliken, Hirshfeld, and Voronoi simulations articulate that the charge migrates from the Li cation to C60 fullerene; however, the amount of the charge transferred depends on the nature and location of the cation within the complex. We believe that the proposed work suggests a relevant step toward the practical application of molecular switches in organic materials.

We report on the single-molecule electronic and thermoelectric properties of strategically chosen anthracene-based molecules with anchor groups capable of binding to noble metal substrates, such as gold and platinum. Specifically, we study the effect of different anchor groups, as well as quantum interference, on the electric conductance and the thermopower of gold/single-molecule/gold junctions and generally find good agreement between theory and experiments. All molecular junctions display transport characteristics consistent with coherent transport and a Fermi alignment approximately in the middle of the highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap. Single-molecule results are in agreement with previously reported thin-film data, further supporting the notion that molecular design considerations may be translated from the single- to many-molecule devices. For combinations of anchor groups where one binds significantly more strongly to the electrodes than the other, the stronger anchor group appears to dominate the thermoelectric behavior of the molecular junction. For other combinations, the choice of electrode material can determine the sign and magnitude of the thermopower. This finding has important implications for the design of thermoelectric generator devices, where both n- and p-type conductors are required for thermoelectric current generation.

BACKGROUND: A minimum of one ultrasound scan is recommended for all pregnant women before the 24th week of gestation. In Ethiopia, there is a shortage of skilled manpower to provide these services. Currently, trained mid-level providers are providing the services at the primary healthcare level. The aims of this study were to compare antenatal care 1 (ANC1), antenatal care 4 (ANC4), skilled birth attendance (SBA), and postnatal care (PNC) service utilization before and after institutionalizing Vscan limited obstetric ultrasounds at semi-urban health centers in Ethiopia. METHODS: A pre and post intervention observational study was conducted to investigate maternal and neonatal health service utilization rates before and after institutionalizing Vscan limited obstetric ultrasound services, between July 2016 and June 2020. The data were extracted from 1st August- 31st December 2020. RESULTS: The observed monthly increase on the mean rank of first ANC visits after the introduction of Vscan limited obstetric ultrasound services showed a statistically significant difference at KW-ANOVA H (3) = 17.09, P = 0.001. The mean rank of fourth ANC utilization showed a statistically significant difference at KW- ANOVA H (3) = 16.24, P = 0.001. The observed mean rank in skilled birth attendance (SBA) showed a statistically significant positive difference using KW-ANOVA H (3) = 23.6, P<0.001. The mean rank of increased utilization in postnatal care showed a statistically significant difference using KW-ANOVA H (3) = 17.79, P<0.001. CONCLUSION: The introduction of limited obstetric ultrasound services by trained mid-level providers at the primary healthcare level was found to have improved the utilization of ANC, SBA, and postnatal care (PNC) services. It is recommended that the institutionalization of limited obstetric ultrasound services be scaled up and a further comparative study between facilities with and without ultrasound services be conducted to confirm causality and assess effects on maternal and perinatal outcomes.

This research presents comprehensive theoretical investigations of a series of alkane-based chains using four different terminal end groups including amine -NH2, thiomethyl -SMe, thiol -SH and direct carbon contact -C. It is widely known that the electrical conductance of single molecules can be tuned and boosted by chemically varying their terminal groups to metal electrodes. Here, we demonstrate how different terminal groups affect alkane molecules' electrical conductance. In general, alkane chain conductance decreases exponentially with length, regardless of the anchor group types. In these simulations the molecular length varies from 3 to 8 -CH2 units, with 4 different linker groups; these simulations suggest that the conductances follow the order G C > G SH > G SMe > G NH2 . The DFT prediction order of the 4 anchors is well supported by STM measurements. This work demonstrates an excellent correlation between our simulations and experimental measurements, namely: the percent difference ΔG, exponential decay slopes, A constants and ß factors at different molecular alkane chain lengths.

ConspectusDuring the past decade or so, research groups around the globe have sought to answer the question: "How does electricity flow through single molecules?" In seeking the answer to this question, a series of joint theory and experimental studies have demonstrated that electrons passing through single-molecule junctions exhibit exquisite quantum interference (QI) effects, which have no classical analogues in conventional circuits. These signatures of QI appear even at room temperature and can be described by simple quantum circuit rules and a rather intuitive magic ratio theory. The latter describes the effect of varying the connectivity of electrodes to a molecular core and how electrical conductance can be controlled by the addition of heteroatoms to molecular cores. The former describes how individual moieties contribute to the overall conductance of a molecule and how the overall conductance can change when the connectivities between different moieties are varied. Related circuit rules have been derived and demonstrated, which describe the effects of connectivity on Seebeck coefficients of organic molecules. This simplicity arises because when a molecule is placed between two electrodes, charge transfer between the molecule and electrodes causes the molecular energy levels to adjust, such that the Fermi energy (EF) of the electrodes lies within the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. Consequently, when electrons of energy EF pass through a molecule, their phase is protected and transport takes place via phase-coherent tunneling. Remarkably, these effects have been scaled up to self-assembled monolayers of molecules, thereby creating two-dimensional materials, whose room temperature transport properties are controlled by QI. This leads to new molecular design strategies for increasing the on/off conductance ratio of molecular switches and to improving the performance of organic thermoelectric materials. In particular, destructive quantum interference has been shown to improve the Seebeck coefficient of organic molecules and increase their on/off ratio under the influence of electrochemical gating. The aim of this Account is to introduce the novice reader to these signatures of QI in molecules, many of which have been identified in joint studies involving our theory group in Lancaster University and experimental group in Bern University.

Through a comprehensive theoretical study, we demonstrate that single-molecule junctions formed from asymmetric molecules with different terminal groups can exhibit Seebeck coefficients, whose sign depends on the orientation of the molecule within the junction. Three anthracene-based molecules are studied, one of which exhibits this bi-thermoelectric behaviour, due to the presence of a thioacetate terminal group at one end and a pyridyl terminal group at the other. A pre-requisite for obtaining this behaviour is the use of junction electrodes formed from different materials. In our case, we use gold as the bottom electrode and graphene-coated gold as the top electrode. This demonstration of bi-thermoelecricity means that if molecules with alternating orientations can be deposited on a substrate, then they form a basis for boosting the thermovoltage in molecular-scale thermoelectric energy generators (TEGs).

Understanding and controlling the orbital alignment of molecules placed between electrodes is essential in the design of practically-applicable molecular and nanoscale electronic devices. The orbital alignment is highly determined by the molecule-electrode interface. Dependence of orbital alignment on the molecular anchor group for single molecular junctions has been intensively studied; however, when scaling-up single molecules to large parallel molecular arrays (like self-assembled monolayers (SAMs)), two challenges need to be addressed: 1. Most desired anchor groups do not form high quality SAMs. 2. It is much harder to tune the frontier molecular orbitals via a gate voltage in SAM junctions than in single molecular junctions. In this work, we studied the effect of the molecule-electrode interface in SAMs with a micro-pore device, using a recently developed tetrapodal anchor to overcome challenge 1, and the combination of a single layered graphene top electrode with an ionic liquid gate to solve challenge 2. The zero-bias orbital alignment of different molecules was signalled by a shift in conductance minimum vs. gate voltage for molecules with different anchoring groups. Molecules with the same backbone, but a different molecule-electrode interface, were shown experimentally to have conductances that differ by a factor of 5 near zero bias. Theoretical calculations using density functional theory support the trends observed in the experimental data. This work sheds light on how to control electron transport within the HOMO-LUMO energy gap in molecular junctions and will be applicable in scaling up molecular electronic systems for future device applications.

Dialkynylferrocenes exhibit attractive electronic and rotational features that make them ideal candidates for use in molecular electronic applications. However previous works have primarily focussed on single-molecule studies, with limited opportunities to translate these features into devices. In this report, we utilise a variety of techniques to examine both the geometric and electronic structure of a range of 1,1'-dialkynylferrocene molecules, as either single-molecules, or as self-assembled monolayers. Previous single molecule studies have shown that similar molecules can adopt an 'open' conformation. However, in this work, DFT calculations, STM-BJ experiments and AFM imaging reveal that these molecules prefer to occupy a 'hairpin' conformation, where both alkynes point towards the metal surface. Interestingly we find that only one of the terminal anchor groups binds to the surface, though both the presence and nature of the second alkyne affect the thermoelectric properties of these systems. First, the secondary alkyne acts to affect the position of the frontier molecular orbitals, leading to increases in the Seebeck coefficient. Secondly, theoretical calculations suggested that rotating the secondary alkyne away from the surface acts to modulate thermoelectric properties. This work represents the first of its kind to examine the assembly of dialkynylferrocenes, providing valuable information about both their structure and electronic properties, as well as unveiling new ways in which both of these properties can be controlled.

The thermoelectric properties of parallel arrays of organic molecules on a surface offer the potential for large-area, flexible, solution processed, energy harvesting thin-films, whose room-temperature transport properties are controlled by quantum interference (QI). Recently, it has been demonstrated that constructive QI (CQI) can be translated from single molecules to self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), boosting both electrical conductivities and Seebeck coefficients. However, these CQI-enhanced systems are limited by rigid coupling of the component molecules to metallic electrodes, preventing the introduction of additional layers which would be advantageous for their further development. These rigid couplings also limit our ability to suppress the transport of phonons through these systems, which could act to boost their thermoelectric output, without comprising on their impressive electronic features. Here, through a combined experimental and theoretical study, we show that cross-plane thermoelectricity in SAMs can be enhanced by incorporating extra molecular layers. We utilize a bottom-up approach to assemble multi-component thin-films that combine a rigid, highly conductive 'sticky'-linker, formed from alkynyl-functionalised anthracenes, and a 'slippery'-linker consisting of a functionalized metalloporphyrin. Starting from an anthracene-based SAM, we demonstrate that subsequent addition of either a porphyrin layer or a graphene layer increases the Seebeck coefficient, and addition of both porphyrin and graphene leads to a further boost in their Seebeck coefficients. This demonstration of Seebeck-enhanced multi-component SAMs is the first of its kind and presents a new strategy towards the design of thin-film thermoelectric materials.

BACKGROUND: The maternal and neonatal mortalities in Ethiopia are high. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, innovations in ultrasound scanning and surveillance activities have been implemented at health centers for over 2 years. This study aims to estimate the contribution of obstetric ultrasound services on averted maternal and neonatal morbidities and mortalities in Ethiopia. METHODS: A retrospective facility-based cross-sectional study design was conducted in 25 selected health centers. Data were extracted from prenatal ultrasound registers. SPSS version 25 was used for analysis. To claim statistically significant relationship among sartorial variables, a chi-square test was analyzed and P < 0.05 was the cut-off point. RESULTS: Over the 2 years, 12,975 pregnant women were scanned and 52.8% of them were residing in rural areas. Abnormal ultrasound was reported in 12.7% and 98.4% of them were referred for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment. The ultrasound service has contributed to the prevention of 1,970 maternal and 19.05 neonatal morbidities and mortalities per 100,000 and 1,000 live births respectively. The averted morbidities and mortalities showed a statistically significant difference among women residing in rural and semi-urban areas, X,2 df (10) = 24.07, P = 0. 007 and X,2 df (5) = 20.87. P = 0.00, 1 respectively. CONCLUSION: After availing the appropriate ultrasound machines with essential supplies and capacitating mid-level providers, significant number of high-risk pregnant women were identified on time and managed or referred to health facilities with safe delivery services. Therefore, scaling-up limited obstetric ultrasound services in similar setups will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. It is recommended to enhance community awareness for improved utilization of ultrasound services by pregnant women before the 24th week of gestational age.

For the purpose of creating single-molecule junctions, which can convert a temperature difference ΔT into a voltage ΔV via the Seebeck effect, it is of interest to screen molecules for their potential to deliver high values of the Seebeck coefficient S = -ΔV/ΔT. Here we demonstrate that insight into molecular-scale thermoelectricity can be obtained by examining the widths and extreme values of Seebeck histograms. Using a combination of experimental scanning-tunnelling-microscopy-based transport measurements and density-functional-theory-based transport calculations, we study the electrical conductance and Seebeck coefficient of three endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) Sc3N@C80, Sc3C2@C80, and Er3N@C80, which based on their structures, are selected to exhibit different degrees of charge inhomogeneity and geometrical disorder within a junction. We demonstrate that standard deviations in the Seebeck coefficient σS of EMF-based junctions are correlated with the geometric standard deviation σ and the charge inhomogeneity σq. We benchmark these molecules against C60 and demonstrate that both σq, σS are the largest for Sc3C2@C80, both are the smallest for C60 and for the other EMFs, they follow the order Sc3C2@C80 > Sc3N@C80 > Er3N@C80 > C60. A large value of σS is a sign that a molecule can exhibit a wide range of Seebeck coefficients, which means that if orientations corresponding to high values can be selected and controlled, then the molecule has the potential to exhibit high-performance thermoelectricity. For the EMFs studied here, large values of σS are associated with distributions of Seebeck coefficients containing both positive and negative signs, which reveals that all these EMFs are bi-thermoelectric materials.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is a low-income country located in the horn of Africa's sub-Saharan region, with very high incidences of maternal and neonatal mortality. Quality antenatal care improves perinatal health outcomes. The USAID funded Transform: Primary Health Care Activity in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and GE Healthcare introduced Vscan limited obstetric ultrasound services in 120 health centers in Ethiopia. So far, the experiences and opinions of midwives on their use have not been explored and described within the local context. This study therefore aims to explore and describe the experiences and opinions of midwives on Vscan limited obstetric ultrasound services at health centers within Ethiopia. METHODS: An exploratory and descriptive qualitative study was conducted in Amhara, Oromia, and Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' (SNNP) regions of Ethiopia. Twenty-four participants were selected through a purposeful sampling technique. In-depth individual interviews with trained midwives with practical hands-on limited obstetric ultrasound service provision experience were conducted. The thematic analysis was conducted manually. RESULTS: The qualitative data analysis on the experiences and opinions of midwives revealed three themes, namely: individual perception of self-efficacy, facilitators, and barriers of limited obstetric ultrasound services. The basic ultrasound training, which was unique in its organization and arrangement, prepared and built the self-efficacy of trainees in executing their expected competencies. Support of health systems and health managers in dedicating space, availing essential supplies, and assigning human resources emerged as facilitators of the initiated limited obstetric ultrasound services, whereas high workload on one or two ultrasound trained midwives, interruption of essential supplies like paper towels, gel, and alternative power sources were identified as barriers for limited ultrasound services. CONCLUSION: This study explored the experiences and opinions of midwives who were trained on the provision of limited obstetric ultrasound services and served the community in health centers in rural parts of Ethiopia. The results of this study revealed the positive impacts of the intervention on the perceived self-efficacy, facilitation, and breaking-down of barriers to obstetric ultrasound services. Before scaling-up limited obstetric ultrasound interventions, health managers should ensure and commit to availing essential supplies (e.g., paper towels, ultrasound gel, and large memory hard discs), arranging private rooms, and training other mid-level health professionals. In addition, improving pregnant women's literacy on the national schedule for ultrasound scanning services is recommended.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of immunization data and monitoring systems in the Dara Malo District (Woreda) of the Gamo Administrative Zone, within the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from August 4 to September 27, 2019, in Dara Malo District. The district was purposively selected during the management of a pertussis outbreak, based on a hypothesis of 'there is no difference in reported and recounted immunization status of children 7 to 23 months in Dara Malo District of Ethiopia'. The study used the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended Data Quality Self-Assessment (DQS) tools. The accuracy ratio was determined using data from routine Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) and household surveys. Facility data spanning the course of 336 months were abstracted from EPI registers, tally sheets, and monthly routine reports. In addition, household surveys collected data from caretakers, immunization cards, or oral reports. Trained DQS assessors collected the data to explore the quality of monitoring systems at health posts, health centers, and at the district health office level. A quality index (QI) and proportions of completeness, timeliness, and accuracy ratio of the first and third doses of pentavalent vaccines and the first dose of measles-containing vaccines (MCV) were formulated. RESULTS: In this study, facility data spanning 336 months were extracted. In addition, 595 children aged 7 to 23 months, with a response rate of 94.3% were assessed and compared for immunization status, using register and immunization cards or caretakers' oral reports through the household survey. At the district level, the proportion of the re-counted vaccination data on EPI registers for first dose pentavalent was 95.20%, three doses of pentavalent were 104.2% and the first dose of measles was 98.6%. However, the ratio of vaccination data compared using tallies against the reports showed evidence of overreporting with 50.8%, 45.1%, and 46.5% for first pentavalent, third pentavalent, and the first dose of measles vaccinations, respectively. The completeness of the third dose of pentavalent vaccinations was 95.3%, 95.6%, and 100.0% at health posts, health centers, and the district health office, respectively. The timeliness of the immunization reports was 56.5% and 64.6% at health posts and health centers, respectively, while the district health office does not have timely submitted on time to the next higher level for twelve months. The QI scores ranged between 61.0% and 80.5% for all five categories, namely, 73.0% for recording, 71.4% for archiving and reporting, 70.4% for demographic information, 69.7% for core outputs, and 70.4% for data use and were assessed as suboptimal at all levels. The district health office had an emergency preparedness plan. However, pertussis was not on the list of anticipated outbreaks. CONCLUSION: Immunization data completeness was found to be optimal. However, in the study area, the accuracy, consistency, timeliness, and quality of the monitoring system were found to be suboptimal. Therefore, poor data quality has led to incorrect decision making during the reported pertussis outbreak management. Availing essential supplies, including tally sheets, monitoring charts, and stock management tools, should be prioritized in Daro Malo District. Enhancing the capacity of healthcare providers on planning, recording, archiving, and reporting, analyzing, and using immunization data for evidence-based decision making is recommended. Improving the availability of recording and reporting tools is also likely to enhance the data accuracy and completeness of the community health information system. Adapting pertussis outbreak management guidelines and conducting regular data quality assessments with knowledge sharing events to all stakeholders is recommended.

BACKGROUND: Leadership, management, and governance (LMG) interventions play a significant role in improving management systems, enhancing the work climate, and creating responsive health systems. Hence, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health with the support of the USAID Transform: Primary Health Care project has been implementing LMG interventions to improve performances of primary healthcare entities. The purpose of this evaluation was to compare maternal and child health service performances and overall health system strengthening measurement results of primary health care entities by LMG intervention exposed groups. METHODS: The study used a cross-sectional study design with a propensity matched score analysis, and was conducted from August 28, 2017, to September 30, 2018, in Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' (SNNP) regions. Data collection took place through interviewer and self-administered questionnaires among 227 LMG intervention exposed and 227 non-exposed health workers. Propensity score matched analysis was used to balance comparison groups with respect to measured covariates. RESULTS: The mean overall maternal and child health key performance indicator score with standard deviation (± SD) for the LMG intervention exposed group was 63.86 ± 13.16 and 57.02 ± 13.71 for the non-exposed group. The overall health system strengthening score for the LMG intervention exposed group (mean rank = 269.31) and non-exposed group (mean rank = 158.69) had statistically significant differences (U = 10.145, z = - 11.175, p = 0.001). In comparison with its counterpart, the LMG exposed group had higher average performances in 3.54, 3.51, 2.64, 3.00, 1.07, and 3.34 percentage-points for contraceptive acceptance rate, antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, postnatal care, full immunization, and growth monitoring services, respectively. CONCLUSION: There were evidences on the positive effects of the LMG intervention on increased maternal and child health services performances at primary healthcare entities. Moreover, health facilities with LMG intervention exposed health workers had higher and statistically significant differences in management systems, work climates, and readiness to face new challenges. Therefore, this study generated evidence for integrating LMG interventions to improve the performance of primary healthcare entities and maternal and child service uptake of community members, which contributes to the reduction of maternal and child deaths.

A major potential advantage of creating thermoelectric devices using self-assembled molecular layers is their mechanical flexibility. Previous reports have discussed the advantage of this flexibility from the perspective of facile skin attachment and the ability to avoid mechanical deformation. In this work, we demonstrate that the thermoelectric properties of such molecular devices can be controlled by taking advantage of their mechanical flexibility. The thermoelectric properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) fabricated from thiol terminated molecules were measured with a modified AFM system, and the conformation of the SAMs was controlled by regulating the loading force between the organic thin film and the probe, which changes the tilt angle at the metal-molecule interface. We tracked the thermopower shift vs. the tilt angle of the SAM and showed that changes in both the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient combine to optimize the power factor at a specific angle. This optimization of thermoelectric performance via applied pressure is confirmed through the use of theoretical calculations and is expected to be a general method for optimising the power factor of SAMs.

BACKGROUND: The Ethiopian neonatal mortality has not shown much progress over the years. In light of this, the country has introduced interventions such as the utilization of newborn corners and neonatal intensive care units to avert preventable neonatal deaths. This study was conducted to assess readiness of primary hospitals in providing neonatal intensive care services. METHODS: A health facility based cross-sectional study design was employed where data were collected using both prospective and retrospective techniques using a format adapted from national documents. SPSS version 25 was used for data entry and analysis using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Data were collected from 107 of 113 (94.7%) primary hospitals due to inaccessibility of some primary hospitals. The minimum national standard requirement of a level one neonatal intensive care unit for infrastructure was met by 63% (68/107) and 44% (47/107) had fulfilled the requirements for kangaroo mother care units. The average number of neonatal intensive care unit trained nurses per primary hospital was 2.6, 0.8 for general practitioners and 2.9 support staff; all of which is less than the minimum recommended national standard. The minimum national requirement for medical equipment and renewables for primary hospital level was fulfilled by 24% (26/107) of the hospitals, 65% (70/107) for essential laboratory tests, and 87% (93/107) for clinical services and procedures. The average number of admissions during the six months prior to the data collection was 87.2 sick newborns per facility with a 'discharged improved' rate of 71.5%, referral out rate of 18.4% and level one neonatal intensive care unit death rate of 6.6%. The remaining newborns had either left against medical advice or were still undergoing treatment during data collection. CONCLUSIONS: The overall readiness of primary hospitals to deliver neonatal intensive care services in terms of infrastructure, human resource, medical equipment, and laboratory tests was found to be low. There is a need to fill gaps in infrastructure, medical equipment, renewables, human resource, laboratory reagents, drugs and other supplies of neonatal intensive care units of primary hospitals to garner better quality of service delivery.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth is a complex process, and checklists are useful tools to remember steps of such complex processes. The World Health Organization safe childbirth checklist is a tool used to improve the quality of care provided to women giving birth. The checklist was modified by Ministry of Health and was introduced to health centers in Ethiopia by the USAID Transform: Primary Health Care Activity. METHODS: A pre and post intervention study design with prospective data collection was employed. The availability of essential childbirth supplies and adherence of health care providers to essential birth practices were compared for the pre and post intervention periods. RESULTS: The pre and post intervention assessments were conducted in 247 and 187 health centers respectively. A statistically significant improvement from 63.6% pre intervention to 83.5% post intervention was observed in the availability of essential childbirth supplies, t (389.7) = - 7.1, p = 0.000. Improvements in adherence of health care providers to essential birth practices were observed with the highest being at pause point three (26.2%, t (306.3) = - 10.6, p = 0.000) followed by pause point four (21.1%, t (282.5) = - 8.0, p = 0.000), and pause point two (18.2%, t (310.8) = - 9.7, p = 0.000). The least and statistically non-significant improvement was observed at pause point one (3.3%, t (432.0) = - 1.5, p = 0.131). CONCLUSION: Improvement in availability of essential childbirth supplies and adherence of health care providers towards essential birth practices was observed after introduction of a modified World Health Organization safe childbirth checklist. Scale up of the use of the checklist is recommended.
